00:00:01.985 --> 00:00:17.121
Hello and welcome to another episode of Inside Out.
00:00:17.362 --> 00:00:23.809
My name is Jim Bennett and I am here as always with my partner in crime, the legendary Ian Wilkes.
00:00:24.850 --> 00:00:25.812
Ian, how are you, sir?
00:00:25.891 --> 00:00:27.594
Have I called you legendary before?
00:00:28.513 --> 00:00:34.363
I'm not sure, but I'll try to live up to the legendary Ian Wilkes or whoever he is.
00:00:35.024 --> 00:00:36.746
So yeah, great to be with you, Jim.
00:00:36.948 --> 00:00:41.395
Always excited to be doing these podcasts, having these great conversations.
00:00:41.435 --> 00:00:44.981
I get a lot from them and I hope our listeners do as well.
00:00:46.003 --> 00:00:47.545
Well, I hope so too.
00:00:47.765 --> 00:00:54.176
And I'm grateful when we hear from them because the Spotify, do you have Spotify?
00:00:54.195 --> 00:00:55.158
I do.
00:00:55.874 --> 00:01:01.743
So Spotify Wrapped tells you everything that you've listened to in the previous year.
00:01:01.764 --> 00:01:17.750
And I've had several people message me to tell me that Inside Out with Jim Bennett and Ian Wilkes is in their top five of podcasts that they've listened to over the course of the year, which I thought was fascinating.
00:01:18.490 --> 00:01:19.893
So people are listening to us.
00:01:20.052 --> 00:01:22.417
So we have to be careful that we don't...
00:01:23.298 --> 00:01:25.280
you know, say really stupid things.
00:01:25.521 --> 00:01:26.822
Although maybe it's too late.
00:01:26.841 --> 00:01:30.085
Maybe the horse is already out of the barn on that one.
00:01:30.286 --> 00:01:32.489
I think that horse fled a long time ago.
00:01:34.691 --> 00:01:38.775
We're going to talk about a couple of things here today.
00:01:38.816 --> 00:01:50.469
But one of the things that's really interesting is that the church has just released or recently released a new introduction to the Book of Mormon.
00:01:51.201 --> 00:01:55.909
And this has caused a lot of controversy in the past when the church has done that.
00:01:56.129 --> 00:02:01.456
I've got in front of me a copy of the Book of Mormon that was published in 1981.
00:02:01.496 --> 00:02:08.086
And I think this is when white and delightsome became pure and delightsome.
00:02:09.489 --> 00:02:24.760
But it also has an introduction at the beginning that talks about the Book of Mormon is a volume of Holy Scripture written Comparable to the Bible, it is a record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas.
00:02:24.841 --> 00:02:28.825
It contains, as does the Bible, the fullness of the everlasting gospel.
00:02:29.507 --> 00:02:34.372
But it's the next paragraph that has caused a lot of controversy over the years.
00:02:34.993 --> 00:02:47.710
At the end of that paragraph, it says, After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians.
00:02:48.834 --> 00:03:10.141
And there was a new release, I'm not sure when it was, but it was relatively recently, where this introduction was altered so that it no longer says they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians, but it says they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.
00:03:10.883 --> 00:03:15.650
And a lot of people have made a lot of noise about that and concern about that.
00:03:19.074 --> 00:03:52.824
problematic because at no place does this introduction claim to have been a revelation at no place does i mean because later on on the title page uh we find that i mean right at the beginning you have a title page that says that this was taken from the plates of nephi so the title page we're told is actually part of the book of mormon translation this introduction is a much later edition much like the subtitle of the Book of Mormon, where it now says it's another testament of Jesus Christ.
00:03:53.985 --> 00:03:56.210
That was added long after the fact.
00:03:56.229 --> 00:04:20.713
So this introduction is not something that we're supposed to accept as canonized revelation, but the change from saying they were the principal ancestors to the fact that they were among the ancestors demonstrates that the church has essentially changed its position on an aspect of Book of Mormon historicity.
00:04:20.754 --> 00:04:40.613
When the Book of Mormon was first published, it was everybody's assumption, including Joseph Smith, that the Book of Mormon covered a geographical area that was an expanse from the top of North America to the bottom of South America.
00:04:41.442 --> 00:04:45.627
It's what they call the hemispheric model of the Book of Mormon.
00:04:46.406 --> 00:04:55.117
The idea that the Nephites and the Lamanites were the only people, essentially, that were in ancient America.
00:04:55.137 --> 00:05:12.677
And now Book of Mormon scholars that still accept the historicity of the Book of Mormon have gone through and recognized that the travel times in the Book of Mormon are prohibitive of that expanse of a geography.
00:05:12.737 --> 00:05:18.966
You had Lamanites and Nephites moving from place to place on foot.
00:05:20.687 --> 00:05:23.913
I've always found it interesting that nobody rides anywhere.
00:05:24.132 --> 00:05:31.083
For all the controversy about horses in the Book of Mormon, you don't ever have anybody talking about being on horseback.
00:05:31.184 --> 00:05:42.192
You do at one point have references to chariots, but you don't have long travel happening that isn't done on foot.
00:05:42.372 --> 00:05:48.839
And so scholars have gone through this and they've recreated a geographical model that is much smaller.
00:05:49.740 --> 00:05:59.069
The footprint is much smaller than the hemispheric model that the church had essentially adopted from the outset.
00:05:59.230 --> 00:06:07.358
And so I'm not sure if you can put a date on when the church has sort of shifted to this limited geography model.
00:06:08.129 --> 00:06:23.293
But that was reflected in the relatively new introduction to the Book of Mormon that changed it to among the ancestors as opposed to the principal ancestors.
00:06:23.954 --> 00:06:49.283
Well, now it's really interesting that just this week, the church has completely changed the introduction to the Book of Mormon And it doesn't make any reference whatsoever to Nephites or to Lamanites or to whether they are the principal ancestors or among the ancestors.
00:06:49.865 --> 00:06:51.726
It sidesteps that altogether.
00:06:51.747 --> 00:07:02.329
The only reference, I don't necessarily need to read the entire introduction of the Book of Mormon, But it completely changes the tone.
00:07:02.370 --> 00:07:05.033
It doesn't really get into the material in the Book of Mormon.
00:07:05.052 --> 00:07:14.523
The only reference to ancient America, it says, it talks about records that people keep, about God's interaction with them.
00:07:14.702 --> 00:07:24.233
It says, one such record was buried in a hillside in around AD 400 on the North American continent.
00:07:24.961 --> 00:07:27.786
That's the only geographical reference at all.
00:07:27.826 --> 00:07:37.278
The rest of it, it just talks about the doctrine of Jesus Christ, read the Book of Mormon with an open mind and heart.
00:07:38.478 --> 00:07:54.449
And I find nothing objectionable in the new introduction, and again, find nothing controversial about the fact that the church changes And the church is willing to change its materials to reflect the changes.
00:07:54.589 --> 00:08:02.459
But there are a lot of blogs and there are a lot of podcasts that are really kind of frustrated by this.
00:08:02.939 --> 00:08:13.370
I'm looking at the Exponent 2 blog where the headline is Erasing Church History, the New Book of Mormon Introduction.
00:08:14.471 --> 00:08:20.317
And the complaint is that it's lost all of its historical focus.
00:08:21.250 --> 00:08:28.478
It's just going away from what we've always taught and what we've taught before in the past.
00:08:29.678 --> 00:08:44.654
I don't want to dwell too much on this necessarily, but I think this is a jumping off point for what I think this larger discussion should be today.
00:08:44.695 --> 00:08:50.741
We've had a lot of feedback from our conversation with Marcus Hutber last week.
00:08:51.490 --> 00:08:59.841
which I ended up stepping away from at the end because I was very frustrated that we did not have a common set of facts.
00:09:02.484 --> 00:09:04.447
Just one thing to highlight.
00:09:05.086 --> 00:09:19.245
I had read a statement by Brigham Young where he talked about the law of God, which will always be so, that interracial relationships should be punished by death on the spot.
00:09:20.066 --> 00:09:28.014
And Marcus's response to that was, well, I'd been politically assassinated in the press before.
00:09:28.054 --> 00:09:29.756
I know how awful the press is.
00:09:29.797 --> 00:09:38.647
And so I'm not going to pay any attention to a third-hand statement by Brigham Young when we don't know if he actually said it.
00:09:38.667 --> 00:09:42.071
And this could have been reported in the press negatively.
00:09:42.110 --> 00:09:45.875
And since that, I got very frustrated at that.
00:09:46.034 --> 00:09:47.956
Since that, I went back and...
00:09:49.570 --> 00:09:52.634
where that quote had come from.
00:09:52.654 --> 00:09:55.379
And that quote was not a press quote.
00:09:55.440 --> 00:10:02.150
It came from the Journal of Discourses, which was a quasi-official publication of the church.
00:10:02.471 --> 00:10:07.519
The church itself didn't publish it, but they authorized the publication in England.
00:10:07.841 --> 00:10:13.389
And it was recorded by Brigham Young's primary stenographer, a man by George D.
00:10:13.509 --> 00:10:13.971
Watt.
00:10:15.192 --> 00:10:15.333
And...
00:10:15.714 --> 00:10:19.519
Brigham Young's sermons are all over the place in that.
00:10:19.539 --> 00:10:23.505
There are 390 sermons by Brigham Young.
00:10:24.528 --> 00:10:33.301
And in the first volume of the Journal of Discourses, Brigham Young personally edited his own sermons.
00:10:34.001 --> 00:10:41.693
And in future volumes, he didn't edit them, but he selected which sermons should be included in the publications.
00:10:42.337 --> 00:10:48.705
and he assigned his personal secretary to edit them, and he personally approved all of them being in there.
00:10:48.784 --> 00:11:04.102
So the quote that I gave came from 1863, so it would not have been in the first volume, but it would have been personally approved for inclusion in the Journal of Discourses by Brigham Young himself.
00:11:04.283 --> 00:11:20.028
So for anyone to say, well, geesh, this could have been a misquoted, this is something that Brigham Young said, whether he said it word for word or not, he was later reviewing it and determined that it should be included in the Journal of Discourses.
00:11:20.149 --> 00:11:29.119
So to just wave it away and say that Brigham Young didn't say this, that cannot be sustained by the historical record.
00:11:30.139 --> 00:11:34.686
So, I mean, that's just the one specific thing I want to address from last week.
00:11:35.365 --> 00:12:02.014
But the thing that I think that last week highlighted and that I think needs to be discussed is the fact that the church, as evidenced by this new Book of Mormon introduction, and really by a whole host of things that have changed over a very short period of time, the church's position on LGBTQ issues, has changed dramatically in my lifetime.
00:12:02.054 --> 00:12:04.298
You know, you had the Spencer W.
00:12:04.357 --> 00:12:09.645
Kimball miracle of forgiveness position, which was that all gay people are voluntary perverts.
00:12:10.587 --> 00:12:11.870
That's the word he uses.
00:12:11.889 --> 00:12:34.451
I think it's an offensive word and it's really kind of frustrating, but they chose to be gay and they can choose not to be gay and they should expect to not be gay if they pray hard enough, if they pound on the door, The door will open, and they will enter a new life of heterosexuality as a result of their righteousness.
00:12:34.490 --> 00:12:36.293
Well, the church no longer teaches that.
00:12:36.393 --> 00:12:45.225
The church recognizes that people do not choose their attractions, and those attractions don't go away with sufficient righteousness.
00:12:46.187 --> 00:12:51.494
And we now recognize, you know, the church in 2008 was...
00:12:52.322 --> 00:12:58.488
asking its members to go and donate money and time to defeat Proposition 8 in California.
00:12:58.508 --> 00:13:06.576
Oh, I'm sorry, to pass Proposition 8 in California in order to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.
00:13:06.596 --> 00:13:19.610
And much more recently, as the church has lost that battle in every way it is possible to lose that battle, the church has lost in the courts, the church has lost in the legislatures, and now...
00:13:20.577 --> 00:13:25.024
Gay marriage, same-sex marriage is the law of the land throughout the United States.
00:13:25.183 --> 00:13:38.921
And the church has endorsed the Respect for Marriage Act, which codifies same-sex marriage into law throughout the entirety of the United States and all United States territories.
00:13:40.143 --> 00:13:44.488
And that's a dramatic shift from just as recently as 2008.
00:13:44.969 --> 00:13:56.046
I mean, you can go issue by issue by issue You know, we went last week, we talked about race in the priesthood and the church's position on that has changed dramatically.
00:13:56.066 --> 00:14:03.534
In 2013, the church specifically disavowed everything it had taught about the reasons for the priesthood and temple ban.
00:14:04.035 --> 00:14:33.323
We've disavowed the idea that black people were somehow less valiant in the pre-existence, that they were somehow, that they bore the curse of Cain and all these other things that we were using as, as justification for what I very strongly believe was a massive mistake initiated by Brigham Young and perpetuated by his successors.
00:14:33.364 --> 00:14:50.553
The church has not been willing to quite go that far, although Deseret Book has now published a book called Let's Talk About Race in the Priesthood by Paul Reeve, who was one of the principal authors of the Race and the Priesthood Gospel Topics essay.
00:14:50.595 --> 00:14:57.083
And in that Deseret Book book, it specifically says, yes, this was a mistake.
00:14:57.784 --> 00:15:03.013
So you're seeing the church change on all of these issues.
00:15:03.793 --> 00:15:07.499
And from my perspective, that is a very, very good thing.
00:15:07.538 --> 00:15:18.265
And I think it's something that we ought to expect because we are a church that is built on the foundation of continuing revelation.
00:15:18.466 --> 00:15:23.052
And what good is continuing revelation if it doesn't change anything?
00:15:23.573 --> 00:15:31.104
It's really bizarre to me that the church has evolved into this idea of unchangeable doctrine.
00:15:31.183 --> 00:15:35.450
These things can never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever change.
00:15:36.230 --> 00:15:43.822
And at the same time, we say we're the only true church because we're the only church with continuing revelation from heaven.
00:15:44.706 --> 00:15:47.089
And how can you have both at the same time?
00:15:47.249 --> 00:15:59.861
How can you have this rigid, unchanging church and yet also have continuing revelation from heaven, which can come as long as it doesn't change anything?
00:15:59.902 --> 00:16:01.945
It's just bizarre to me.
00:16:03.166 --> 00:16:13.937
But I think the problem is exacerbated by the fact that when the church does change, you know, I've listed all these changes on all these issues.
00:16:14.498 --> 00:16:21.926
And when the church does change, the church does not acknowledge that it's changed.
00:16:22.427 --> 00:16:25.389
And I think that's really one of the principal problems of this.
00:16:25.910 --> 00:16:37.823
The church doesn't announce that when it issues a new introduction to the Book of Mormon, that it is any way contrary to previous introductions to the Book of Mormon.
00:16:37.864 --> 00:16:43.490
When the church changed it from principal ancestors to among the ancestors.
00:16:43.912 --> 00:16:46.375
It did so quietly without telling anybody.
00:16:46.414 --> 00:16:55.827
And we were all, the problem is we're all supposed to sort of pretend that this is the way it's always been.
00:16:55.868 --> 00:17:02.278
That, okay, yeah, well, we always sort of taught the limited geography model of the Book of Mormon.
00:17:02.317 --> 00:17:04.820
This is really no different from the way it was.
00:17:04.941 --> 00:17:08.145
No, it's actually a rather radical departure.
00:17:09.153 --> 00:17:24.684
from the way Joseph Smith thought about the Book of Mormon and from the way the early saints thought about the Book of Mormon and really the way that just about every member of the church thought about the Book of Mormon until well into the 20th century, late 20th century.
00:17:25.727 --> 00:17:49.973
And this new idea of the limited geography model is not What I was taught as a child growing up in the church, and when I had my little illustrated stories from the Book of Mormon series that I used to read from, that very much talked about Lamanites not having a suntan, but rather being cursed with dark skin.
00:17:50.013 --> 00:17:54.499
And the church quietly changes these things.
00:17:54.539 --> 00:18:06.398
The gospel topics essays that changed how we look at the race and priesthood ban, Those disavowals did not come from the pulpit in general conference.
00:18:06.499 --> 00:18:13.651
They were released without any fanfare, quietly online, without anybody knowing about it.
00:18:13.791 --> 00:18:26.854
And I would bet that if you were to poll the general membership of the church, I would think a solid majority of the members of the church don't even know those gospel topics essays are there.
00:18:27.554 --> 00:18:30.538
Because they've never been discussed in general conference.
00:18:30.597 --> 00:18:39.689
They're not brought up in any kind of public way that would call attention to them.
00:18:40.328 --> 00:18:49.721
So I think this problem is perpetuated by the fact that when the church changes, it doesn't want you to know that it's changed.
00:18:49.881 --> 00:18:55.807
It just wants you to pretend or believe that this is the way it has always been.
00:18:57.761 --> 00:19:15.707
And that becomes a serious problem when you encounter the kind of thinking we encountered in our last podcast, which is you have people that continue to cling to the previous teachings.
00:19:16.248 --> 00:19:24.425
You have people who believe that, well, no, in fact, black people were somehow less valiant in the pre-existence.
00:19:24.506 --> 00:19:33.516
The explanation we got last week was a little sort of skewed that they sort of voluntarily chose not to come to this earth.
00:19:34.376 --> 00:19:37.779
I'm sorry, to come to this earth, but not to have the priesthood when they got here.
00:19:37.819 --> 00:19:54.285
And that idea blew up in the face of the church in 2012 because when Mitt Romney was the Republican nominee for president, There was a lot of attention given to the church.
00:19:54.345 --> 00:19:57.351
They called it the Mormon moment in the media.
00:19:57.411 --> 00:19:59.855
President Nelson would probably have been upset by that.
00:19:59.954 --> 00:20:10.674
But during the Mormon moment, the Washington Post ran a series of articles about the church's position with regard to blacks in the priesthood.
00:20:12.038 --> 00:20:14.362
And they interviewed a BYU professor.
00:20:15.137 --> 00:20:19.863
by the name of Randy Bott, and he was a very popular BYU professor.
00:20:19.963 --> 00:20:26.111
Rate My Professors had his rating higher than any other professor at BYU.
00:20:27.372 --> 00:20:32.198
And he gave this explanation that was very similar to the one we heard last week.
00:20:32.838 --> 00:20:42.609
He talked about how it was an act of mercy not to give the priesthood to black people because they weren't ready for it.
00:20:43.201 --> 00:20:51.758
I'm not sure if he ever said they didn't want it, but he said it would be like giving the car keys to young children.
00:20:52.819 --> 00:20:57.890
And you're doing young children a favor by not giving them something they're not ready for.
00:20:59.092 --> 00:21:08.935
And this caused a huge backlash from people who thought, This is a terrible, terrible racist explanation for this.
00:21:09.737 --> 00:21:15.723
And the church even issued a statement clarifying that that is not the position of the church.
00:21:15.903 --> 00:21:21.290
And Randy Bott ended up being forced into an early retirement as a result.
00:21:22.333 --> 00:21:29.342
But the problem is, Randy Bott was just saying everything that he had been taught.
00:21:29.794 --> 00:21:30.634
throughout his life.
00:21:30.694 --> 00:21:33.137
He wasn't making something up.
00:21:33.558 --> 00:21:40.929
These were things that he was taught in order to justify a racist ban on priesthood and temple blessings.
00:21:42.009 --> 00:21:49.319
And the church just sort of threw Professor Bott under the bus rather than say, oh, you know what?
00:21:49.359 --> 00:21:55.027
Professor Bott is reflecting an earlier understanding, but we have since changed.
00:21:55.528 --> 00:21:56.890
We no longer believe that.
00:21:57.473 --> 00:22:07.148
Instead, the church's statement was very much along the lines of, this is not the church's position, and the implication was, this has never been the church's position.
00:22:07.209 --> 00:22:25.117
It's ridiculous to think that the church would ever think this, when in fact, Professor Bott's position was very much in line with mainstream thinking in the church, and I think to some degree is still in line with mainstream thinking today.
00:22:25.410 --> 00:22:26.211
in the church.
00:22:26.290 --> 00:22:42.430
There are still so many members of the church who, not having been given any kind of explicit instruction to abandon those wrong ideas that have since changed, they still cling to them.
00:22:43.371 --> 00:22:45.213
We find this in our own ward.
00:22:46.535 --> 00:22:57.654
My wife went to Relief Society where a member of the Relief Society said, oh, the race in the priesthood essay is wrong and it's going to be changed because it's absolutely wrong.
00:22:58.615 --> 00:23:14.073
Because this member was sort of clinging to these same outdated ideas about race that we very much taught and we have now quietly disavowed, but not loudly enough so people can hear it and believe it.
00:23:14.773 --> 00:23:22.909
And you can go through the gamut of any controversial topic in church history or doctrine.
00:23:23.951 --> 00:23:27.017
And you can demonstrate significant changes.
00:23:27.317 --> 00:23:33.048
We heard, for instance, a little about the idea of sort of young earth creationism.
00:23:33.990 --> 00:23:52.817
Marcus mentioned that there was a certain sort of tree that he couldn't believe could have survived the flood in and then said, okay, except that tree, it's on the tops of mountains, so those mountains wouldn't have been covered with water when the entire earth was covered in a flood.
00:23:52.836 --> 00:23:59.304
And so that makes sense that they could have survived and they could have predated the flood.
00:24:00.246 --> 00:24:03.409
Well, quietly, the church no longer...
00:24:03.449 --> 00:24:11.038
This one's a little difficult because the church never explicitly...
00:24:12.130 --> 00:24:22.163
was willing to say that the earth is only 7,000 years old and the flood took place 4,000 years ago and the flood was a global flood that covered all the earth.
00:24:22.683 --> 00:24:25.907
That was certainly Joseph Fielding Smith's position.
00:24:25.968 --> 00:24:26.868
That was not David O.
00:24:26.909 --> 00:24:27.851
McKay's position.
00:24:28.571 --> 00:24:39.326
Joseph Fielding Smith tried very hard to get that essentially canonized by having the church publish his book, Man, His Origin and Destiny.
00:24:40.001 --> 00:24:42.684
which is an anti-evolution screed that David O.
00:24:42.704 --> 00:24:43.464
McKay hated.
00:24:43.484 --> 00:24:44.807
And David O.
00:24:44.846 --> 00:24:48.770
McKay refused to allow to be published by the church.
00:24:49.550 --> 00:25:03.785
And the idea of young earth creationism has always sort of been a strain in Latter-day Saint thinking, but we've never explicitly canonized anything that says that.
00:25:04.865 --> 00:25:12.365
Well, now I'm backing off on that because I think Doctrine and Covenants section 77 talks about 7,000 years of Earth's temporal history.
00:25:13.448 --> 00:25:16.731
And so I think that's probably a canonization of that.
00:25:16.771 --> 00:25:31.192
But the church quietly has abandoned all of the early statements that talk about scientifically ludicrous things, like the Earth only being 7,000 years old.
00:25:31.231 --> 00:25:35.278
And the official statement is, we don't know.
00:25:36.193 --> 00:26:01.349
And if you go to church universities, if you go to Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University Provo, Brigham Young University Idaho, you go to the science classes that address things like geology and evolution, and all scientifically accurate or up-to-date information is welcome in those classes, is taught in those classes.
00:26:01.890 --> 00:26:05.874
They do not teach that the earth is only 7,000 years old.
00:26:05.933 --> 00:26:08.276
They do not reject the theory of evolution.
00:26:08.316 --> 00:26:34.478
And so the church, I think, has made great strides towards accepting the science on those topics that a lot of people who grew up without that kind of scientific acceptance or that embrace of science and who grew up listening to Joseph Fielding Smith and Bruce R.
00:26:34.518 --> 00:26:40.665
McConkie, who in Mormon doctrine explicitly rejects the idea of evolution.
00:26:40.705 --> 00:26:42.709
My mission president, Bruce R.
00:26:42.729 --> 00:26:59.432
McConkie's son, Joseph Fielding McConkie, if you read his book, Answers to Gospel Questions, which was only published, what, 25 years ago, it explicitly says, no, you cannot reconcile the theory of evolution with the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:27:00.353 --> 00:27:12.755
Now, That is not the official church position, but it had enough prominence within the church that it felt like the church's official position.
00:27:12.795 --> 00:27:34.119
And the fact that it was in Mormon doctrine, which was, you know, there's the title, Mormon doctrine, and while the church has tried to bat pedal and now that book is no longer in print, For a very long time, you, Ian, know as well as I do that Mormon doctrine was considered quasi-official, if not official.
00:27:35.281 --> 00:27:44.775
And everybody recognized that, you know, if you had a question, Mormon doctrine had this sort of encyclopedic list of answers.
00:27:44.934 --> 00:27:47.499
You could go and say, well, I don't know what the church's position here.
00:27:47.558 --> 00:27:49.642
Let's go see what Mormon doctrine has to say.
00:27:50.241 --> 00:27:52.203
But we've moved away from that.
00:27:52.243 --> 00:27:53.285
We have changed.
00:27:53.484 --> 00:27:56.748
The church has changed, and change is a good thing.
00:27:58.369 --> 00:28:04.915
But how do we deal with that when so many members of the church aren't willing to change?
00:28:05.517 --> 00:28:08.779
So that's my question to you as I conclude my opening rant.
00:28:09.440 --> 00:28:10.961
What do we do about this, Ian?
00:28:12.202 --> 00:28:13.584
How do we handle this problem?
00:28:15.385 --> 00:28:16.247
And is it a problem?
00:28:17.188 --> 00:28:19.390
Do you think this is as big a problem as I think it is?
00:28:20.961 --> 00:28:24.545
You've covered a lot of ground over the last 35 minutes.
00:28:26.586 --> 00:28:29.250
Have I ranted for 35 minutes?
00:28:29.349 --> 00:28:30.310
I apologize for that.
00:28:30.951 --> 00:28:31.491
That's okay.
00:28:31.772 --> 00:28:32.933
It's a lot of information.
00:28:33.413 --> 00:28:34.895
And I just kind of want to...
00:28:35.316 --> 00:28:38.499
You made some really important points that I just want to...
00:28:38.659 --> 00:28:41.021
And I'll come back to that question in a second.
00:28:44.644 --> 00:28:49.210
If we look at the history of the church, the quotes from the prophets, the apostles...
00:28:50.817 --> 00:28:58.088
prior to, up until the 1980s, and certainly if you go back to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Wilford Woodruff, Joseph G.
00:28:58.108 --> 00:29:14.353
Oldsmith, Bruce Amakonke, there is a sense of certainty, a degree of confidence that they know certain things as facts, and they communicate and use language where they make absolute statements about history.
00:29:14.393 --> 00:29:19.420
If you look at the 1981, as I say, you covered so much material there.
00:29:19.460 --> 00:29:27.790
You've referenced the 1981 introduction of the Book of Mormon, which is a very important point, I think, in our conversation here.
00:29:27.810 --> 00:29:39.184
It talks about the Lamanites, the only ones to survive, and they're the principal ancestors of the American Indians.
00:29:39.746 --> 00:29:56.883
If you look at that introduction, you look at so many other canonical and other terms and references, identified in the Pearl of Great Price, Jesus the Christ, Articles of Faith.
00:29:57.503 --> 00:29:59.005
Look at a lot of articles that were written.
00:29:59.025 --> 00:30:05.732
There was so much confidence and certainty that the brethren knew certain things for a fact.
00:30:06.453 --> 00:30:08.696
And this is, of course, before the internet.
00:30:09.157 --> 00:30:26.460
And now, as things have changed and the internet has opened up the opportunities to research and to access and to check, the history of the Book of Mormon, the geography of the Book of Mormon, the church, understandably, has lost a lot of its confidence.
00:30:27.181 --> 00:30:33.390
And if you look at the statements and the tone and phrases the church uses now, they're a lot safer than what they used to be.
00:30:33.430 --> 00:30:36.394
Back then, it was very much black and white.
00:30:36.414 --> 00:30:45.127
These are statements we're making based on facts, and those facts are revealed by revelation.
00:30:45.208 --> 00:30:48.712
Yes, we've got some physical evidence, but where we don't have the physical evidence...
00:30:49.442 --> 00:30:57.250
You need to rely on faith, because we're the only true church upon the face of the earth, and we've got the facts, the information that comes through revelation.
00:30:57.872 --> 00:30:59.673
That's not the position of the church now.
00:30:59.713 --> 00:31:05.161
The church is very concerned, very nervous about making statements.
00:31:05.761 --> 00:31:12.269
If you look at the general conference talks, a lot of the talks are very safe, and I can understand why the church would want to stay away from...
00:31:13.250 --> 00:31:22.661
anything historical to do with the Book of Mormon or making any statements from the pulpit at General Conference which are significant or too significant.
00:31:22.800 --> 00:31:31.611
And these changes that have come about, many of them, to your point, have happened very subtly and very quietly.
00:31:31.631 --> 00:31:41.521
The other point you mentioned, item that you mentioned, is the changes to the Book of Mormon introduction.
00:31:42.114 --> 00:31:49.843
If you go to the app, the general LDS tools app on your phone there, it hasn't changed.
00:31:51.125 --> 00:32:03.839
There's still references to Joseph Smith, Moroni, the plates, references to the fact that, or the statement that the church believes and teaches that the Book of Mormon scripture is comparable to the Bible.
00:32:04.181 --> 00:32:06.282
That's still on the main LDS tools app.
00:32:07.484 --> 00:32:11.869
This app is the Book of Mormon app, where you get the new introduction.
00:32:12.513 --> 00:32:14.476
And it is very significant.
00:32:14.635 --> 00:32:26.468
It's another example where the church is trying to change and modify its language and make the language and the position of the church more palatable, more acceptable.
00:32:27.087 --> 00:32:29.810
I think in some ways it's a very smart move.
00:32:30.551 --> 00:32:44.838
You look at the new introduction, and I think it's written and designed for a certain group, an investigator group, a younger investigator group, who can read it and kind of connect to it on a very personal way.
00:32:44.858 --> 00:32:49.586
I see this as being partly a very smart move on the part of the church.
00:32:50.086 --> 00:32:53.732
I mean, the opening statement would resonate, I think, with most people.
00:32:54.513 --> 00:32:55.635
God is your heavenly father.
00:32:55.655 --> 00:32:56.497
He loves you.
00:32:56.517 --> 00:32:59.382
And there is so much he wants to teach you.
00:32:59.402 --> 00:33:10.778
I mean, it's a very completely radical shift from the 1981 where The Book of Mormon is a volume of Holy Scripture comparable to the Bible.
00:33:10.858 --> 00:33:17.208
It is a record of dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as is the Bible, the fullness of the annals of the gospel.
00:33:17.729 --> 00:33:20.332
One, you've got this very scriptural tone.
00:33:20.613 --> 00:33:26.141
This King James tone is written even into the introduction of the Book of Mormon.
00:33:26.621 --> 00:33:32.009
And here you've got a very different language, different approach completely.
00:33:32.048 --> 00:33:41.305
And I think there are a lot of qualities, actually, and a lot of advantages by communicating and introducing the Book of Mormon using some of this language.
00:33:41.786 --> 00:33:43.028
There are some disadvantages.
00:33:43.208 --> 00:33:46.613
And again, it depends on who you are as a person.
00:33:47.232 --> 00:34:09.132
For someone like me, my age, I think a lot of people like me who are maybe like the intellectual side and like the historical side and the scriptural references, the fact that there's no reference to Joseph Smith, There's no references to the, you know, it being a record of the ancient Americas.
00:34:12.657 --> 00:34:17.204
There's no reference to the plates, no reference to being, you know, comparable Holy Scripture.
00:34:17.224 --> 00:34:27.559
The downside of that, it loses its scriptural integrity by removing those references.
00:34:28.119 --> 00:34:32.065
But it all depends on who they are targeting.
00:34:32.418 --> 00:34:33.639
with this introduction.
00:34:34.742 --> 00:34:44.440
And so they still retain a lot of the original text and language in the introduction in the LDS Tools app.
00:34:44.822 --> 00:34:45.764
I want to be clear about that.
00:34:46.664 --> 00:34:49.570
They do talk about it being a comparable scripture, et cetera.
00:34:50.231 --> 00:34:51.896
But in this version, they haven't.
00:34:51.996 --> 00:34:54.900
And I think they've done that because of a different demographic.
00:34:55.425 --> 00:35:03.114
If that is the case, and I think it is, then that's a pretty smart move because I do like a lot of the qualities in the new introduction.
00:35:03.775 --> 00:35:12.045
Some of the podcasts out there are ripping this to shreds, saying that the church is deliberately trying to change its history.
00:35:12.206 --> 00:35:13.447
I don't see it like that.
00:35:13.507 --> 00:35:14.268
I'm not in the church.
00:35:14.329 --> 00:35:20.275
I've got a lot of issues with the church on certain things, as you know.
00:35:20.856 --> 00:35:23.619
But I think the church isn't trying to...
00:35:25.762 --> 00:35:27.764
come across as changing the doctrine.
00:35:27.784 --> 00:35:29.144
I think it's for a different demographic.
00:35:29.646 --> 00:35:35.652
I think the point that, I think the fact that they have made these changes without communicating them.
00:35:36.172 --> 00:35:36.833
But we're saying that.
00:35:36.873 --> 00:35:43.500
We don't know if the, usually the bishops, I suspect the bishops have got a memo internally.
00:35:43.519 --> 00:35:58.835
In fact, I bet money on it, that they have a memo and that they've been advised that these changes are going to take place And any members who've got questions about this, then they can approach the bishop or members of the stake presidency.
00:35:59.335 --> 00:36:03.079
So we don't know what type of communication the church has been involved in internally.
00:36:05.023 --> 00:36:11.289
But again, to your point, they do make changes often without communicating it from the pulpit.
00:36:11.349 --> 00:36:14.432
And they're doing it because they're nervous and they're concerned.
00:36:14.452 --> 00:36:16.175
They don't know what the reaction is going to be.
00:36:17.016 --> 00:36:18.617
They're very concerned about history.
00:36:18.637 --> 00:36:22.461
They're very concerned about things, Jim, where they can be disproved.
00:36:23.489 --> 00:36:28.416
You talked earlier, you talked last week on the Marcus Hooker, which I'll get into in a second, about facts.
00:36:29.257 --> 00:36:33.663
We have to agree on some basic facts, otherwise we can't have a conversation.
00:36:34.664 --> 00:36:44.318
Well, the facts are that the church has made statements on polygamy, on same-sex marriage.
00:36:45.090 --> 00:36:49.195
on the Book of Mormon, on the Book of Mormon translation process.
00:36:49.335 --> 00:36:50.135
It's made those statements.
00:36:50.237 --> 00:37:01.791
And historically, as I said before, it's done so with a great degree of confidence, overconfidence and certainty, and to the internet, and to people having the ability now to research this.
00:37:02.271 --> 00:37:12.889
And now, over the last few decades, the church has been found to be wrong, proven to be wrong, And he's been very embarrassed publicly.
00:37:12.929 --> 00:37:15.574
He's very concerned, very nervous about public opinion.
00:37:15.893 --> 00:37:20.201
Think about all the different audiences that the church has to satisfy.
00:37:20.240 --> 00:37:33.460
And then if you look at those audiences, the different demographics that are in those audiences, look at the older generation, the senior folks in the church who have this older version of the church.
00:37:33.501 --> 00:37:36.867
That's what you talked about, different churches.
00:37:37.086 --> 00:37:38.869
Marcus inventing a new church.
00:37:39.617 --> 00:37:44.824
I think within the church, there are different versions of the church, depending on the demographic.
00:37:45.346 --> 00:37:47.409
Older people hang on to the older teachings.
00:37:47.889 --> 00:37:56.802
Younger people are more flexible in terms of a nuance, in terms of how they see things.
00:37:56.862 --> 00:38:00.547
And you've talked about this convincingly on previous podcasts.
00:38:00.907 --> 00:38:06.896
So I think that's very important background context as to what the church is doing, why it's doing it.
00:38:06.936 --> 00:38:11.922
I I have an issue with the church making changes quietly.
00:38:11.943 --> 00:38:20.876
I think changing the principal ancestors of the American Indians to amongst the ancestors of the American Indians is very significant.
00:38:21.438 --> 00:38:26.545
And I think it did that because it couldn't verify that.
00:38:26.666 --> 00:38:27.567
It could disprove that.
00:38:28.407 --> 00:38:30.331
And you can disprove it based on facts.
00:38:31.313 --> 00:38:32.153
And facts matter.
00:38:33.762 --> 00:38:35.103
Facts matter and they're important.
00:38:35.143 --> 00:38:51.005
And that's where the church, when it gets to things like on a factual basis, the church in its correlation committee will be doing fact checking and making sure that it's correlated and it's not saying or doing things not based on facts.
00:38:51.965 --> 00:38:53.869
And that leads me to another really important point.
00:38:53.929 --> 00:38:57.512
And I'm getting to your question very close here now.
00:38:58.835 --> 00:39:15.121
The point that the reality, rather, that there are members in the church who, even today in 2024, hold on to old-fashioned, antiquated doctrines and positions and views.
00:39:16.403 --> 00:39:18.728
And you still have that in the church.
00:39:18.887 --> 00:39:19.909
It's alive and well.
00:39:20.150 --> 00:39:25.117
It's probably a large minority, depending on the age.
00:39:25.998 --> 00:39:37.947
I've said before that I know people who are in the church now, who still today do not accept or believe that blacks should hold the priesthood, even now, even today.
00:39:37.987 --> 00:39:46.016
And these are a group of people in the church who are very dangerous, and in fact, are holding the church back.
00:39:46.876 --> 00:39:50.742
You said just now that the church has made progress.
00:39:51.121 --> 00:39:58.429
We complain about the church not making enough progress, that it takes 10 years to change something or 20 years to change something.
00:39:58.978 --> 00:40:01.161
There's a lot of evidence to support that, for sure.
00:40:01.782 --> 00:40:04.246
But when it does make the change, we criticize it.
00:40:04.666 --> 00:40:07.150
When it makes good change, we can criticize it.
00:40:07.190 --> 00:40:09.353
We can be very negative.
00:40:09.614 --> 00:40:16.264
And I think that's a mistake for certain people who criticize the church for making good changes.
00:40:16.284 --> 00:40:24.958
I mean, for goodness sake, this whole podcast, a big part of this podcast, is conversations about where...
00:40:25.474 --> 00:40:35.505
we think and where our guests think, the church can make improvements, be more inclusive, be more thoughtful, be kinder.
00:40:35.565 --> 00:40:37.648
We want the church to be a better church.
00:40:39.369 --> 00:40:44.856
So if the church is listening and making progress on key things and moving forward, great.
00:40:45.295 --> 00:40:58.744
The problem is when you've got this old-fashioned, antiquated, dangerous views of certain individuals in the church, it does the church a disservice because it holds it back.
00:40:59.525 --> 00:41:07.253
The church, however, has a responsibility to address these views that some of these members have in the church.
00:41:07.974 --> 00:41:27.637
If you've got people in the church that perpetuate views and positions that the church has moved on from, it's the responsibility of the local leaders to address that, and it's the responsibility of the church to make sure that the members are in line with the current doctrines and teachings of the church.
00:41:28.018 --> 00:41:45.115
The problem is, with the church, it's struggling and is nervous about how fast it can bring some of those senior individuals, people who, or any individuals rather, who have hold on to those teachings and positions which are now outdated.
00:41:45.155 --> 00:41:55.005
How does it bring those into the 21st century without losing them, without offending them, and keeping in mind, you know, the tithe payers.
00:41:55.525 --> 00:41:59.672
And often these individuals are the bedrock of the church.
00:42:00.432 --> 00:42:02.056
They've served in senior positions.
00:42:02.657 --> 00:42:07.503
They've got a vast amount of experience, Jim, 20, 30, 40, 50 years in the church.
00:42:08.025 --> 00:42:10.688
And the church doesn't want to alienate that group.
00:42:11.630 --> 00:42:19.101
The problem we have is that these individuals hold on to extremely dangerous views.
00:42:19.809 --> 00:42:23.795
And not only do they hold on to them, they perpetuate them.
00:42:25.516 --> 00:42:28.199
And some of the views can be very extreme.
00:42:28.239 --> 00:42:37.490
You know, we talked last week with Marcus about, Marcus said that black people chose to be black.
00:42:38.291 --> 00:42:39.434
They were self-cursed.
00:42:39.893 --> 00:42:42.898
I find that offensive.
00:42:43.197 --> 00:42:44.500
You know, Marcus spoke plainly.
00:42:44.519 --> 00:42:46.041
I will speak plainly.
00:42:46.722 --> 00:42:49.885
He said things that I'm very uncomfortable with.
00:42:50.485 --> 00:42:53.047
And in fact, the church has moved on from that.
00:42:53.548 --> 00:42:57.472
The church is very clear that black skin is a curse.
00:42:58.072 --> 00:42:58.974
That's the position.
00:42:59.735 --> 00:43:01.036
It should have always been like that.
00:43:01.076 --> 00:43:02.277
It wasn't.
00:43:02.797 --> 00:43:03.739
The church changed.
00:43:03.918 --> 00:43:04.519
It improved.
00:43:04.960 --> 00:43:08.724
Maybe not as much has gone far as what people would hope, but it's improved.
00:43:09.483 --> 00:43:10.385
We have to acknowledge that.
00:43:10.485 --> 00:43:21.976
And when it changes and improves, and we said, this is part of our podcast system, you know, is to acknowledge the improvements of the church, then let's give the church the credit where it deserves, where it's made those changes.
00:43:22.275 --> 00:43:32.911
And let's deal with old-fashioned, antiquated views where the church, individuals hold on to often dangerous and harmful teachings.
00:43:33.452 --> 00:43:38.199
Things like sexual sins is worse than murder, for example.
00:43:38.880 --> 00:44:42.077
We've covered across a number of dangerous doctrines that some people still hang on to and still bring that into the conversation and in fact perpetuate that it's one thing to believe it and to think it and to even talk about it on a podcast it's quite another to have a personal conversation with someone and actually influence their thinking into this dangerous doctrine and that is that's a very dangerous situation especially when we're dealing with young minds imagine someone With that type of thinking, those dangerous thoughts and positions on, for example, saying that being gay is a sin, being gay means that you're going down to hell, being gay means that you're not a son or daughter of God, which destroys self-esteem and actually is a cause for suicide of some people.
00:44:42.657 --> 00:45:29.690
individuals in the church because they they feel like this and they can't reconcile it and they're told that what the feeling is wrong they're told what the feeling is is a sin and god doesn't love them god won't accept them as they are they have to change and they can't because it's who they are and it's how they feel and they feel rejected and they feel lost and they feel So these, if we think for one second that these antiquated, outdated, dangerous, toxic views of certain individuals that still exist in the church today, if we don't think that they can cause harm, then we're mistaken because they can, especially when we're dealing with young people, you know, pliable minds.
00:45:30.251 --> 00:45:47.443
And I think the church has a responsibility to make sure that in the church, people who are progressive thinkers are who are balanced in their perspective, who accept the changes of the church, that they are the ones who should be called into youth and to primary callings.
00:45:48.204 --> 00:45:50.688
Because, you know, that's absolutely critical.
00:45:51.409 --> 00:46:04.744
I've got a whole here list of, which I won't go into, examples of dangerous doctrines and teachings that were the standard, if you like, in the past that we accepted that was black and white.
00:46:05.686 --> 00:46:09.798
And Unfortunately, on quite a few of them, the church has changed.
00:46:09.838 --> 00:46:11.702
Not all of them, but the church has changed.
00:46:13.063 --> 00:46:17.170
And that brings me to your question.
00:46:17.210 --> 00:46:20.293
So just to remind you of your question again, I want to make the connection.
00:46:20.474 --> 00:46:22.617
What do we do about it?
00:46:24.500 --> 00:46:25.963
In regards to the dangerous doctrines?
00:46:26.463 --> 00:46:26.643
Sure.
00:46:27.324 --> 00:46:27.485
Yeah.
00:46:27.824 --> 00:46:29.648
Well, you've said this all along.
00:46:29.708 --> 00:46:39.161
The thread through all these podcasts, one of the threads, we've said it, to be open and transparent about the doctrine of the church and the history.
00:46:39.501 --> 00:46:41.804
And if we don't know something, let's say it.
00:46:42.545 --> 00:46:44.728
If we don't have an answer, say, look, we don't have an answer.
00:46:44.768 --> 00:46:46.110
Here's the facts.
00:46:46.972 --> 00:46:49.315
You know, let's get a balanced position on the facts.
00:46:50.117 --> 00:46:51.960
Let's quote reliable sources.
00:46:52.099 --> 00:46:59.952
You know, he's not a member of the church, but he's a very successful and a very reliable, dependable scholar or historian.
00:47:00.632 --> 00:47:03.096
He's done his research and the facts are there.
00:47:03.175 --> 00:47:07.233
So, so, so, cite that as a source, a reliable source.
00:47:07.773 --> 00:47:13.099
Don't just quote and cite internal sources like apologetics, you know, like go to Fair Mormon.
00:47:13.800 --> 00:47:20.849
Okay, you know, I mean, I think Fair Mormons, I see Fair Mormons as a cop-out for the church, frankly.
00:47:21.630 --> 00:47:23.914
It's like, it's part of us, but not part of us.
00:47:23.974 --> 00:47:33.246
They do their own thing, but we both know there's a direct connection between Fair Mormon and the church and apologetics in the church and the brethren.
00:47:33.730 --> 00:47:39.358
And the church communicates stuff through those organizations that are arm's length.
00:47:39.719 --> 00:47:43.405
I think that is, frankly, a bit cowardly.
00:47:44.027 --> 00:48:10.364
I think if the church could be very clear and more transparent and more accountable on what it says and what it teaches and not introduce changes through the back door, even though the changes are great, often really good changes, let's be upfront and open and honest about what we believe, what we teach, what we know, or what we think we know.
00:48:10.385 --> 00:48:19.474
And if we say something as a statement, and we say it with certainty, and we say, look, we, you know, instead of saying that we, unless you really, really know based on fact, that's different.
00:48:20.836 --> 00:48:23.840
But if you think you know, just say you think you know.
00:48:25.943 --> 00:48:31.757
But this, and even say this could change based on science and new discoveries.
00:48:32.237 --> 00:48:33.539
To me, that's intelligence.
00:48:34.199 --> 00:48:41.108
You know, the whole basis of science is that we have a understanding of something until the research changes it.
00:48:42.050 --> 00:48:45.233
Like now, there's a big conversation over whether the Big Bang happened or not.
00:48:45.335 --> 00:48:56.889
We're now moving towards, well, there's some great power, some great force behind the events that created the universe, which I've always felt like that, anyhow.
00:48:57.634 --> 00:49:02.240
And so our opinions and views change when new facts come to light.
00:49:02.440 --> 00:49:02.922
And that's good.
00:49:03.822 --> 00:49:04.603
That's a positive thing.
00:49:05.125 --> 00:49:10.652
But let's be upfront, open, and honest about changes.
00:49:11.675 --> 00:49:26.858
Let's be more pragmatic and more proactive about dealing with old-fashioned, dinosaur, dangerous, toxic teachings that were there in the past, but we don't teach that anymore.
00:49:27.362 --> 00:49:28.923
You know, we've gone from the polygamy.
00:49:28.963 --> 00:49:29.686
Look at the polygamy.
00:49:29.726 --> 00:49:30.606
We used to teach polygamy.
00:49:31.268 --> 00:49:38.860
We've now gone, you know, we've poured in huge resources over the years to tell the world we don't practice polygamy.
00:49:39.300 --> 00:49:42.666
You know, when you knock on the door, oh, you're the mormons.
00:49:42.686 --> 00:49:45.550
How many wives do you have?
00:49:45.630 --> 00:49:49.576
I lost count how many times I was asked on the doorstep in Scotland how many wives I had.
00:49:49.655 --> 00:49:54.994
I just thought, I said, and then I would joke, I said, well, we don't, have more than one wife.
00:49:55.054 --> 00:49:57.739
I said, we might have more than one girlfriend, but we don't have more than one wife.
00:49:58.159 --> 00:49:59.922
I kind of make a joke of it.
00:50:00.422 --> 00:50:06.990
But the church has poured huge resources to convince the world it doesn't practice polygamy.
00:50:07.952 --> 00:50:21.490
And I think it needs to take a leadership, proactive and pragmatic approach in communicating changes, being clear about the doctrines, being clear about what's changing.
00:50:22.052 --> 00:50:23.454
Let's talk about what's changed.
00:50:23.777 --> 00:50:25.420
Let's talk about why it's changing.
00:50:25.900 --> 00:50:29.065
If we know something for a fact, based on fact, fine, let's say it.
00:50:29.527 --> 00:50:34.355
If we say something and we think it's a fact or we think it's correct, let's say it, but let's provide context.
00:50:34.675 --> 00:50:37.619
And if we don't know something, let's say that.
00:50:38.121 --> 00:50:41.365
If we don't know the geography of the Book of Mormon, we just don't know.
00:50:41.385 --> 00:50:56.942
And if we don't know the history, if we're changing, we said months ago, we heard of evidence or rumors or maybe a little bit more than rumors, that the church is moving away from the atrocity of the Book of Mormon.
00:50:56.961 --> 00:50:58.344
Do you remember that conversation?
00:50:58.364 --> 00:50:59.005
We're going back a bit.
00:51:00.007 --> 00:51:02.110
We've referenced that.
00:51:02.389 --> 00:51:08.119
And so the church, understandably, is moving away from the Book of Mormon being an historical document.
00:51:08.139 --> 00:51:12.505
I think Elder Bednar said, don't look at it as an historical document, as a past.
00:51:12.885 --> 00:51:15.449
Look at it as a spiritual document for the future.
00:51:15.731 --> 00:51:17.853
I'm paraphrasing there, Elder Bednar.
00:51:18.114 --> 00:51:19.114
pretty much said that.
00:51:19.856 --> 00:51:22.079
So yeah, let's make the changes.
00:51:22.119 --> 00:51:23.041
Let's make the improvements.
00:51:23.081 --> 00:51:24.543
Let's say that we're going to make them.
00:51:24.583 --> 00:51:25.985
Let's not hide the changes.
00:51:26.545 --> 00:51:28.166
Let's talk about it openly.
00:51:28.206 --> 00:51:33.835
And I think that creates good dialogue and it improves spiritual health.
00:51:34.516 --> 00:51:35.858
Let's talk about these things.
00:51:37.039 --> 00:51:38.862
And it's okay not to have all the answers.
00:51:39.617 --> 00:51:41.119
It's okay not to be perfect.
00:51:41.719 --> 00:51:44.882
In fact, I like the fact that the church isn't perfect.
00:51:45.324 --> 00:51:49.447
I like the fact that the church doesn't have all the answers because to me, that's like an adventure.
00:51:49.768 --> 00:51:50.608
Well, let's explore.
00:51:51.188 --> 00:51:52.309
Let's go find it out together.
00:51:52.710 --> 00:51:57.054
So the answers of how to do this is obvious in my mind.
00:51:57.795 --> 00:52:00.597
We've talked about this a lot on the podcast, but that's the approach.
00:52:01.559 --> 00:52:06.364
And will the church change in terms of being more open, transparent about future changes?
00:52:06.384 --> 00:52:07.125
I don't know.
00:52:08.025 --> 00:52:10.829
But The church is changing slowly.
00:52:11.530 --> 00:52:13.554
I think it's changing for the better overall.
00:52:14.394 --> 00:52:37.469
And I think, just to conclude my responses here, I think individuals who hold teachings that the church no longer supports, the church has a responsibility to deal with that and the members have a responsibility to bring themselves up to date on facts based on what the church's positions are and doctrines are.
00:52:37.730 --> 00:52:39.030
in 2024?
00:52:39.092 --> 00:52:39.512
Well,
00:52:41.954 --> 00:52:43.836
that's a good answer to the question.
00:52:44.137 --> 00:52:48.822
You raised a couple of things that had me thinking about my own experience.
00:52:49.603 --> 00:53:06.442
This idea, for instance, that sexual sin is second only to murder and seriousness comes from the Book of Mormon and Alma's instruction to Corianton, is that his name?
00:53:07.010 --> 00:53:07.911
Yep, Corianton.
00:53:08.373 --> 00:53:09.494
Off the top of my head.
00:53:12.420 --> 00:53:26.789
If you look at that actual scripture and that actual story, because a lot of these changes, for instance, the changes about Book of Mormon geography, come as a result not necessarily even of revelation, but of better scholarship.
00:53:27.266 --> 00:53:41.298
I mean, if you read through the Book of Mormon and you read about how geography is dealt with in the Book of Mormon, it becomes very clear that the Book of Mormon geographical footprint, and if you move away from historicity altogether, that becomes another issue.
00:53:41.338 --> 00:53:57.074
But if you're trying to actually set the Book of Mormon events in a real-world place and time, then you have to recognize that the geographical footprint is much smaller than the entire Western Hemisphere.
00:53:58.114 --> 00:54:01.478
or at least the entire North and South American continent.
00:54:02.699 --> 00:54:04.561
But that's the result of better scholarship.
00:54:04.641 --> 00:54:22.820
And if you go and you read the Corianton story, it talks about, it's not just that he went off with the harlot Isabel, it's that he did so while he was a missionary and that his example was detrimental and was driving people out of the church.
00:54:23.862 --> 00:54:26.545
And when he says, know ye not, my son, that this is...
00:54:27.233 --> 00:54:28.916
you know, second only to murder.
00:54:29.717 --> 00:54:32.179
I'm paraphrasing because I can't remember the exact quote.
00:54:33.099 --> 00:54:43.371
But he's talking about that after he says what he's doing is setting such a negative example that he is destroying the faith of church members.
00:54:44.251 --> 00:54:49.237
The sexual sin is really sort of a small component of that.
00:54:49.277 --> 00:54:51.800
It's the destruction.
00:54:51.840 --> 00:54:56.806
It's essentially the murder of people's spiritual lives.
00:54:57.793 --> 00:55:00.056
And that makes a whole lot more sense.
00:55:00.217 --> 00:55:20.878
But like you, or I'm assuming like you, you joined the church at 16, so you may not have had this, but I keep coming back to the one teaching that was really destructive to me, which was the Two Young Men Only pamphlet by Elder Boyd K.
00:55:20.918 --> 00:55:23.702
Packer and the Little Factory Talk.
00:55:24.545 --> 00:55:31.255
I don't want to get too extensive into that, but that really messed up my entire adolescence.
00:55:31.476 --> 00:56:13.304
That made me terrified of my own body and terrified that anything that I might do to activate my little factory might be, I mean, that was essentially a sitting next to murder in my mind because I really didn't have any kind of clarifying counsel or guidance to tell me that this wasn't some kind of terrible, awful thing and that I didn't have to spend my entire adolescence in terror because now the church has quietly moved away from that.
00:56:13.945 --> 00:56:23.644
So much so that the little factory talk, the two young men only pamphlet was taken from a conference talk given by Boyd K.
00:56:23.684 --> 00:56:25.108
Packer in October of 1976.
00:56:25.329 --> 00:56:34.489
And if you go to the church's website and you review the conference talks from October of 1976, it's as if Boyd K.
00:56:34.530 --> 00:56:36.074
Packer just didn't speak at that conference.
00:56:36.673 --> 00:56:41.800
because that conference talk has just been quietly taken off the church's website because the church is so embarrassed by it.
00:56:41.820 --> 00:56:43.384
The church no longer prints the pamphlet.
00:56:43.943 --> 00:56:47.710
The church no longer hosts that material on its website.
00:56:48.670 --> 00:56:56.081
Somebody's told me you can actually, if you go and try to find the video of it, the video is still there, but the text has been removed.
00:56:56.141 --> 00:56:57.864
You really have to dig to find it.
00:56:59.025 --> 00:57:04.293
And the specific handbook of instructions, it does not say...
00:57:05.025 --> 00:57:06.427
There's nothing wrong with masturbation.
00:57:06.467 --> 00:57:07.708
Masturbation is fine.
00:57:08.730 --> 00:57:13.777
But what it does say is there is no ecclesiastical consequence.
00:57:14.416 --> 00:57:15.998
There should be no probation.
00:57:16.018 --> 00:57:27.213
There should be no church discipline should be taken for people who engage in masturbation.
00:57:28.715 --> 00:57:33.000
And I have two friends.
00:57:35.106 --> 00:57:53.556
who are bishops, who have talked to me about this, and one talked about being in a bishop's training session where the general authority president, and I can get the name of the general authority if I contact this bishop friend, he said, do not deny someone a temple recommend.
00:57:54.137 --> 00:57:56.260
Do not tell someone they can't go on a mission.
00:57:56.942 --> 00:57:58.405
Do not deny the sacrament.
00:57:59.527 --> 00:58:01.369
Take no action whatsoever.
00:58:01.858 --> 00:58:05.362
to somebody who comes to you and confesses that they've masturbated.
00:58:05.402 --> 00:58:31.282
And, you know, all throughout my adolescence, you know, and I've told that story about John Huntsman probably far too many times, but I know stories of people who had to wait a year to go on their mission until they conquered their habit of masturbation because this was just such a grievous sin, and now quietly it isn't anymore.
00:58:32.097 --> 00:58:33.719
I mean, the church doesn't encourage it.
00:58:34.661 --> 00:58:36.202
The church doesn't celebrate it.
00:58:37.543 --> 00:58:44.451
The church doesn't say it's okay, which, I mean, it'd be nice if they just said it's okay.
00:58:45.190 --> 00:58:53.599
All they say is, don't take any action, which is essentially the equivalent of saying it's okay, but they're not willing to say.
00:58:53.619 --> 00:58:57.364
So this is the problem.
00:58:59.565 --> 00:58:59.646
Yeah.
00:59:00.322 --> 00:59:19.507
When you talk about the thread through this podcast that the church needs to be more transparent, I think my sort of mission, if there is one, the church also not only has to be transparent, the church has to admit to being fallible.
00:59:20.166 --> 00:59:25.373
The church has to admit to the reality that there have been times when we have been wronged.
00:59:25.889 --> 00:59:32.119
Admitting that there are times when you are wrong is not the same thing as admitting that you are always wrong.
00:59:33.101 --> 00:59:38.708
Because everybody can be wrong and has been wrong on occasions.
00:59:38.909 --> 00:59:43.496
Everybody is individuals and speaking under the church collectively and not individually.
00:59:43.536 --> 00:59:46.842
The church, I think, has been far more right...
00:59:47.713 --> 01:00:04.614
in terms of preaching the principles of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and preaching how to live more Christ-like lives and how to draw closer to Christ, I think the church has been far more right than it has been wrong.
01:00:05.295 --> 01:00:25.833
I don't think admitting that there have been times when we have gotten it wrong is the same thing as admitting that the entire church is a completely flawed and failed institution, and it's always been wrong, which seems to be the direction where some people who leave the church think we ought to go, or that's where they've gone.
01:00:25.873 --> 01:00:31.300
They've essentially said nothing the church has done is right, but you've left the church and you recognize that's not true.
01:00:31.320 --> 01:00:49.081
And I think admitting that there have been times when we have been wrong does not negate all of the rightness, does not negate all of the goodness, What it does is tell the truth and build trust.
01:00:49.862 --> 01:00:54.947
If you could admit that you have been wrong, you build trust in this institution.
01:00:55.128 --> 01:01:10.505
And I think the unwillingness to do that and the fact that these changes are made quietly without any acknowledgement that anything has changed or that anything was wrong that needed to be changed, because that's why I think they're quiet.
01:01:11.297 --> 01:01:16.523
is because when you admit you've changed, you admit that what you were doing before that was wrong.
01:01:17.786 --> 01:01:21.489
And it's just maddening.
01:01:21.530 --> 01:01:35.867
The best example of that, I think, is the 2015 policy of exclusion, which was, we were told by President Nelson that it was a revelation that the children of gay parents can't be baptized.
01:01:36.568 --> 01:01:42.409
And then three and a half years later, President Oaks comes out and says it's a revelation that they can be baptized.
01:01:43.291 --> 01:01:46.353
Well, okay, well, which revelation was right?
01:01:46.494 --> 01:01:48.295
Because they can't both be right.
01:01:49.297 --> 01:01:51.639
They're diametrically opposed to each other.
01:01:52.119 --> 01:01:54.902
Why can't you just admit we got it wrong?
01:01:55.623 --> 01:01:58.945
We got it wrong in 2015, and we fixed it in 2019.
01:01:59.266 --> 01:02:02.168
There's nothing wrong with that.
01:02:02.190 --> 01:02:06.494
There's nothing wrong with fixing error.
01:02:06.978 --> 01:02:16.190
And I think that the obstacle to doing that is when you frame everything as revelation, you act like God is standing there.
01:02:16.210 --> 01:02:19.757
I mean, last week, Marcus talked about the prophet.
01:02:20.177 --> 01:02:22.621
Christ is always standing there whispering in his ear.
01:02:22.681 --> 01:02:34.197
And the idea that prophets can't ever be wrong because Jesus is in constant communication with them in the same way that I'm in communication with you.
01:02:35.137 --> 01:02:36.760
And I don't believe that.
01:02:37.342 --> 01:02:38.304
I used to believe that.
01:02:38.463 --> 01:02:44.996
I don't believe that prophets experience God any differently than the rest of us do.
01:02:45.016 --> 01:02:51.769
I think they have a calling that requires them to seek out greater inspiration and revelation.
01:02:52.510 --> 01:02:58.121
But I don't think Jesus physically appears in first presidency meetings.
01:02:58.786 --> 01:03:04.050
I think that they struggle to reach the divine in the same way the rest of us do.
01:03:04.170 --> 01:03:08.454
And they have a greater responsibility, I think, than we do because their stewardship is greater.
01:03:09.356 --> 01:03:24.891
But they are also capable of misinterpreting or missing the message or getting a message and applying it in ways where their own biases and their own weaknesses come into play.
01:03:25.070 --> 01:03:27.833
That's what the mortal experience is about.
01:03:28.449 --> 01:03:39.648
I mean, that's the fundamental idea of mortality is that we get it wrong and we have to have a savior because we can't get there by ourselves because we get it wrong.
01:03:40.228 --> 01:03:41.552
And there's nothing wrong with that.
01:03:41.592 --> 01:03:43.976
We teach that individually.
01:03:44.016 --> 01:03:45.137
We recognize that.
01:03:45.217 --> 01:03:52.228
But institutionally, we pretend that the institution is exempt from that, that the institution never gets it wrong.
01:03:52.289 --> 01:03:54.934
And yeah, here are some changes, but they're not really changes.
01:03:55.873 --> 01:03:58.376
You see this in the temple.
01:03:58.396 --> 01:04:02.282
I remember the big temple changes.
01:04:02.302 --> 01:04:15.476
I think the temple ceremony has changed three times since President Nelson has become president of the church, which is three out of four of the times that it's changed in my lifetime.
01:04:15.496 --> 01:04:22.925
In 1990, you saw the dropping of the penalties as well as a few other changes, but that was a really, really big change.
01:04:23.681 --> 01:04:36.775
And then the temple ceremony was unchanged up until 20, I think 20, either 2020 or 2021, because they changed either right before or right after the pandemic.
01:04:36.876 --> 01:04:37.918
I can't remember the date.
01:04:38.938 --> 01:04:46.786
But in those changes, when I first went, we talked about it on this podcast.
01:04:48.108 --> 01:04:52.733
So it would have probably been after the pandemic because we began this podcast earlier.
01:04:52.833 --> 01:04:53.695
after the pandemic.
01:04:54.516 --> 01:05:21.905
But at the very beginning of the temple ceremony, the new temple ceremony, there was an announcement by the first presidency, or they read a letter by the first presidency, that said, do not discuss these changes and do not even mention that there have been changes.
01:05:22.530 --> 01:05:33.059
I need to actually get the wording, but it wasn't just enough to say, don't discuss the content of the changes, but don't discuss that there have been changes at all.
01:05:34.280 --> 01:05:36.643
And I just thought, why not?
01:05:37.483 --> 01:05:38.144
Why not?
01:05:38.445 --> 01:05:39.686
That doesn't make any sense.
01:05:42.148 --> 01:05:45.692
Do you think nobody's going to notice that these have been changes?
01:05:47.333 --> 01:05:52.157
What is accomplished by not even acknowledging the reality that change has taken place?
01:05:53.282 --> 01:06:09.398
So this is, I think, just as long as we continue to perpetuate the idea that we don't change, then we're going to have members of the church believing things that we no longer teach.
01:06:10.146 --> 01:06:12.768
because they've got no incentive to change them.
01:06:12.789 --> 01:06:16.273
They've never been told that they have to change, and they've been told the church hasn't changed.
01:06:16.914 --> 01:06:24.143
So what's to prevent them from thinking that all black people volunteered before this life to come and be discriminated against?
01:06:24.864 --> 01:06:33.394
What's to prevent them from teaching that you have to believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old and was completely covered by water as a baptism?
01:06:34.114 --> 01:06:43.465
What's to prevent them from believing that If they activate their little factory, they are very close to, if not actually committing a sin next to murder.
01:06:44.567 --> 01:06:57.088
What's to prevent them from teaching or believing all of those things if the church does not explicitly come out and say, hey, that stuff we taught you 50 years ago, we don't teach that anymore because it was wrong.
01:06:57.507 --> 01:07:03.277
We teach this now because it more accurately reflects the light and knowledge that we have received.
01:07:03.842 --> 01:07:08.186
If we don't do that, we're going to continue to have the dinosaurs in the church.
01:07:08.646 --> 01:07:12.851
Although the dinosaurs in the church are people who don't believe there were dinosaurs.
01:07:13.452 --> 01:07:15.335
So there's a problem with that, I guess.
01:07:15.974 --> 01:07:27.547
But we're going to continue to have this problem unless not only we're transparent, but we're also accountable for our errors and our missteps and our mistakes.
01:07:28.148 --> 01:07:32.554
Do you think there is any way to be transparent without also being accountable?
01:07:33.346 --> 01:07:37.070
Don't you think that that's an essential part of that process?
01:07:38.052 --> 01:07:45.222
The very principle of transparency, in my mind, is to demonstrate that you want to be accountable.
01:07:46.545 --> 01:07:48.688
That they say, hey, look, here's all the information.
01:07:49.028 --> 01:07:49.550
We know this.
01:07:49.710 --> 01:07:50.471
We think we know this.
01:07:50.590 --> 01:07:51.271
We don't know this.
01:07:51.291 --> 01:07:53.175
These have changed.
01:07:53.255 --> 01:07:54.097
This is the same.
01:07:54.697 --> 01:07:55.778
We're trying to work through it.
01:07:55.818 --> 01:07:56.880
That's transparency.
01:07:57.001 --> 01:07:58.603
And open up the books, right?
01:07:59.003 --> 01:07:59.284
Everything.
01:08:00.346 --> 01:08:02.068
Because you have integrity.
01:08:02.088 --> 01:08:03.110
You want to be accountable.
01:08:03.650 --> 01:08:14.740
The church has a distinct and unique and significant responsibility to be transparent, to hold itself accountable, or other organizations and people to hold it accountable for sure.
01:08:15.101 --> 01:08:16.863
Independent accountability, I think, is really important.
01:08:17.384 --> 01:08:30.497
But also to teach or to communicate to the members very clearly, very concisely, very openly, transparently, where the changes have happened and why the changes have taken place.
01:08:31.137 --> 01:08:31.759
I'll give you an example.
01:08:31.838 --> 01:08:33.539
I do a lot of project change management.
01:08:34.520 --> 01:08:39.246
And when you have to change the project, it's called a change order.
01:08:39.265 --> 01:08:43.409
And the change order is referenced in the contract.
01:08:44.371 --> 01:08:56.242
There's an agreement language in the contract that if there's a change to the project, there's a certain protocol and certain measures and certain processes you follow to change the project.
01:08:57.422 --> 01:09:00.025
And that is called a project change order.
01:09:00.962 --> 01:09:02.423
or a change order notification.
01:09:02.805 --> 01:09:03.845
And it's in the contract.
01:09:04.287 --> 01:09:05.127
The client knows it.
01:09:05.809 --> 01:09:08.332
And he knows that at some point, the project is going to change.
01:09:09.212 --> 01:09:22.310
And the deal is, the rule is that you communicate the change, what the change is, and why you're making the changes, and what the cost is, and what the impact on the project schedule is, and the impact on the overall project.
01:09:22.490 --> 01:09:23.072
That's business.
01:09:23.512 --> 01:09:24.394
That's project management.
01:09:25.395 --> 01:09:25.876
It's open.
01:09:25.916 --> 01:09:26.537
It's transparent.
01:09:26.697 --> 01:09:27.158
It works.
01:09:27.521 --> 01:09:28.823
When it's followed, it works.
01:09:29.463 --> 01:09:36.310
The church has a responsibility to bring its members across every demographic up to date on the changes.
01:09:37.110 --> 01:09:40.795
And it doesn't take that responsibility as seriously as it should.
01:09:41.135 --> 01:09:46.159
Likewise, Jim, the responsibility is not solely rests with the church.
01:09:46.659 --> 01:09:55.068
Members of the church have a responsibility to research and to study and to get up to speed and up to date on the changes the church is making.
01:09:55.708 --> 01:09:56.609
So the church...
01:09:57.057 --> 01:10:13.823
does an okay job, or even a good job at times, and still the members don't get up to speed, and that's down to the members, we can't put that dangerous, toxic thinking that still exists within the church entirely on the church.
01:10:14.765 --> 01:10:16.006
Not completely, in my mind.
01:10:16.046 --> 01:10:25.381
The responsibility is with us also to study and to research, and it's a collective, shared responsibility.
01:10:26.818 --> 01:10:38.671
I think the problem the church has got is that there's still a group of people in the church that hold on to these very dangerous doctrines, and they've not moved on.
01:10:38.690 --> 01:10:42.715
And in fact, those individuals are holding the church back.
01:10:43.896 --> 01:10:58.511
So it's in the church's interest to bring everyone up to date on what's happening and why it's happening and all these changes, like the changes to the Book of Mormon introduction, which I think is in part, very positive.
01:10:58.692 --> 01:11:00.052
And I've talked about that earlier.
01:11:01.555 --> 01:11:15.847
But when you still have these individuals that perpetuate and teach these what I think are doctrines that make me very uncomfortable, that's the truth, then I think that's a problem.
01:11:16.588 --> 01:11:28.399
The other thing I want to highlight, which has been a bit of an epiphany for me, listening to you, and we haven't talked about this, and I've not heard this on any of the podcasts.
01:11:28.760 --> 01:11:31.363
It might be out there, but I don't think it is.
01:11:32.465 --> 01:11:38.372
In front of you and I right now, we have a copy of the 1981 edition of the Book of Mormon.
01:11:39.432 --> 01:11:58.448
I was taught, as you was taught, that that book, which I'm holding up now, the original book of my mission, it is the original, by the way, it's not any of the book I'm holding up, that that book in its entirety is a canon of scripture and every word in the book I was taught is scripture.
01:12:00.350 --> 01:12:03.015
And that scripture, Elder Wilkes, does not change.
01:12:03.896 --> 01:12:04.837
Here I am holding the book up.
01:12:05.038 --> 01:12:06.440
It does not change, ever.
01:12:07.762 --> 01:12:09.605
It will always be the same.
01:12:09.706 --> 01:12:10.546
God doesn't change.
01:12:10.606 --> 01:12:12.149
He's the same yesterday, today, and forever.
01:12:12.689 --> 01:12:15.014
And the Holy Scriptures do not change.
01:12:16.395 --> 01:12:19.000
That's what I was taught, and that's what I taught as a missionary.
01:12:20.122 --> 01:12:23.587
And they also said that the scripture doesn't change.
01:12:24.548 --> 01:12:25.210
Because if it did...
01:12:26.242 --> 01:12:43.601
We'd have the situation in the dark ages where these different churches, as I taught, I was taught, and what I taught as a missionary, would take little pieces of the gospel and fill in the rest with their own ideas, quoting myself from a missionary, and they would make up their own religion.
01:12:44.221 --> 01:12:50.449
They'd have some elements of truth, some elements of the original church, but it wasn't the fullness of the gospel.
01:12:50.489 --> 01:12:53.033
It wasn't entirety, and it was man-made stuff.
01:12:53.252 --> 01:12:57.917
And that's what happens We were taught when we change Scripture, it becomes man-made.
01:12:58.438 --> 01:12:59.498
We don't change Scripture.
01:12:59.618 --> 01:13:00.819
God changes Scripture.
01:13:01.199 --> 01:13:02.240
Here's the epiphany.
01:13:03.943 --> 01:13:09.047
Keeping in mind what I've just said, that the church doesn't change Scripture, or that's been the doctrine, the teaching.
01:13:09.768 --> 01:13:17.595
And remember, the introduction in the 1981 edition of the Book of Mormon, and I think it's one of the editions since, is Scripture.
01:13:18.856 --> 01:13:19.837
The introduction of Scripture.
01:13:20.238 --> 01:13:23.902
When a prophet speaks by the power of the Holy Ghost, that's Scripture.
01:13:24.354 --> 01:13:25.055
That's what I was taught.
01:13:25.636 --> 01:13:28.300
The Book of Mormon, from front to end, is Scripture.
01:13:28.319 --> 01:13:29.220
I want to be clear about that.
01:13:29.582 --> 01:13:42.502
But here we have what I think is a significant moment in the church that just hit me on this podcast, where you've now got a new version of the Book of Mormon introduction.
01:13:43.323 --> 01:14:03.978
They've changed almost entirely and missed out key points, key references to Joseph Smith and The plates and being comparable with the Bible and being a history of the dealings with the Lord's people in the Americas.
01:14:04.338 --> 01:14:05.801
That's not in the new version.
01:14:06.180 --> 01:14:06.881
So here's my point.
01:14:07.844 --> 01:14:16.216
The church, I think this is a, in my mind now, a seismic shift where the church has actually changed something that is scriptural.
01:14:16.577 --> 01:14:17.177
They've changed it.
01:14:17.958 --> 01:14:19.461
Whether it's an app or not, they've changed it.
01:14:19.501 --> 01:14:20.283
They've got a version of it.
01:14:21.224 --> 01:14:22.426
To me, it's an improvement.
01:14:23.489 --> 01:14:29.617
I think if I was in the church years ago when I was very fixed in my thinking, I could see this as problematic.
01:14:29.896 --> 01:14:31.198
Now, I don't.
01:14:31.798 --> 01:14:34.242
I see this as overall a positive thing.
01:14:34.282 --> 01:14:46.015
And the question in my mind now, is this evidence, is this a precursor to the church changing actual scripture in the scripture, references in the scriptures?
01:14:46.555 --> 01:14:54.344
It has done with White and Delightsome, which is in this book, by the way, the 1981, because I've read it, says white and delightsome.
01:14:54.724 --> 01:14:55.284
That's what it says.
01:14:55.324 --> 01:14:59.970
In the previous, in the more recent editions, it says pure and delightsome.
01:15:00.452 --> 01:15:03.336
So it has changed words in the scripture.
01:15:03.815 --> 01:15:08.402
You know, in the introduction, it's talked about the principal ancestors to amongst the ancestors.
01:15:08.643 --> 01:15:09.543
That's very significant.
01:15:10.145 --> 01:15:20.878
In my mind now, I think this is a very strategic move on the church where it could then use this as an example in future, say, look, we've changed this, we've changed that.
01:15:20.939 --> 01:15:28.252
And by the way, back in 2024, eight, nine, ten years ago, we gave a friendly aversion to the introduction to the Book of Mormon.
01:15:28.472 --> 01:15:29.875
And we had a great response from that.
01:15:30.255 --> 01:15:32.018
And this is why we're making these changes here.
01:15:32.398 --> 01:15:34.199
I think it's a very smart move on the part of the church.
01:15:34.881 --> 01:15:38.565
I think they're trying to change, trying to connect with that different demographic.
01:15:39.106 --> 01:15:46.235
And whether they know it or not, and I think they do, obviously, the prophets, they have changed Scripture.
01:15:47.597 --> 01:15:48.920
It's a different version.
01:15:49.541 --> 01:15:50.261
I think it's good.
01:15:51.010 --> 01:15:53.634
Whether other people agree with me or not, I don't know.
01:15:54.414 --> 01:16:04.770
But is this a prelude or a precursor to changing other things or taking other things in the Book of Mormon and making a version of it and kind of diluting it?
01:16:05.390 --> 01:16:06.112
I think so.
01:16:06.512 --> 01:16:07.574
I think it's a smart move.
01:16:08.215 --> 01:16:29.990
And I think the church is moving away from areas where it doesn't have that certainty anymore, going back to my earlier point, is wants to spend more time in areas that are safer, that it has confidence in and away from things that it can be disproven.
01:16:30.953 --> 01:16:33.296
And that, I can understand why it would do that.
01:16:33.778 --> 01:16:36.141
How it does that, we can disagree or agree with.
01:16:36.762 --> 01:16:41.470
Why it's doing it, I think it's, there's a number of very obvious reasons why it's doing that.
01:16:41.832 --> 01:16:45.198
So there will be my final remarks on that.
01:16:46.369 --> 01:16:48.113
Well, I appreciate that very much.
01:16:48.613 --> 01:16:50.355
And I agree with you.
01:16:50.376 --> 01:17:04.095
I don't see the Book of Mormon introduction change as an actual change in Scripture in the same way that White and Delightsome was a change in Scripture and the change of the actual text of the Book of Mormon.
01:17:04.756 --> 01:17:15.734
But I do see your idea that we're sort of softening up the membership to some degree for greater changes that may come.
01:17:16.449 --> 01:17:23.497
Joseph Smith edited the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants throughout his life.
01:17:23.737 --> 01:17:33.686
There were significant changes in text of Scripture that was written in the first person as if Jesus Christ said them himself.
01:17:33.967 --> 01:17:37.831
And yet Joseph Smith went in and edited those throughout his life.
01:17:38.112 --> 01:17:54.376
And that doesn't bother me because I recognize that the language of Scripture is an attempt to close the revelation in language, but that the communication does not come in a sort of teletype.
01:17:54.877 --> 01:17:56.359
The words aren't the revelation.
01:17:56.399 --> 01:17:58.443
The words are a description of the revelation.
01:17:58.542 --> 01:18:03.930
And so it doesn't bother me if the words change to better reflect the underlying revelation.
01:18:03.990 --> 01:18:06.454
But I think that's an entirely different discussion.
01:18:07.136 --> 01:18:10.600
I think the principle that you're outlining here is absolutely sound.
01:18:11.394 --> 01:18:15.018
And we need to recognize that and we need to embrace it.
01:18:15.958 --> 01:18:27.050
And for the church to grow and for the church to thrive, the church also has to take accountability and accept changes.
01:18:27.189 --> 01:18:28.331
And you are absolutely right.
01:18:28.411 --> 01:18:29.693
It's not all on the church.
01:18:29.953 --> 01:18:30.974
It's also on us.
01:18:31.875 --> 01:18:42.890
Last week, we were pointing out factual evidence of change that our good friend rejected out of hand.
01:18:44.152 --> 01:18:57.167
And when the church actually demonstrates that change when things are demonstrably different, if we refuse to accept it, that's on us.
01:18:58.168 --> 01:19:06.399
And I think the church is, I think, scared of what members who cling to these outdated ideas will do.
01:19:06.418 --> 01:19:08.542
I think they're scared of driving them away.
01:19:09.377 --> 01:19:23.578
You know, Richard Bushman at one point, when he talked about the dominant narrative of the church is not true, he said a phrase, something along the lines of, to protect the grandmas, we're losing the future.
01:19:24.859 --> 01:19:37.807
You know, to protect these people, to be able to hold on to their outdated and sometimes bigoted ideas, We are losing the rising generation who has no patience for such things.
01:19:38.769 --> 01:19:51.604
And so the only way I think that we can go forward is to embrace change, embrace fallibility, and embrace our accountability and be transparent.
01:19:51.886 --> 01:19:56.150
So I think we're on the same page, and I very much appreciate your thoughts here.
01:19:56.251 --> 01:20:01.478
And we've rambled on here a bit, but I think this has been a wonderful discussion.
01:20:02.177 --> 01:20:10.327
And I appreciate all of you, whether we were in your Spotify wrapped list or not, as one of your top podcasts.
01:20:10.386 --> 01:20:17.954
We are so very grateful that you are listening and that you are participating and giving us feedback.
01:20:18.055 --> 01:20:25.481
Be sure, if you haven't already, to subscribe to this podcast wherever you get your podcasts so you can be updated when a new episode drops.
01:20:26.944 --> 01:20:28.565
But we're very grateful for you listening.
01:20:29.154 --> 01:20:34.171
And we look forward to seeing you next time on the next episode of Inside Out.
01:20:34.814 --> 01:20:35.636
Thank you very much, Ian.
01:20:35.856 --> 01:20:38.365
Thank you, Jim.
00:00:01.985 --> 00:00:17.121
Hello and welcome to another episode of Inside Out.
00:00:17.362 --> 00:00:23.809
My name is Jim Bennett and I am here as always with my partner in crime, the legendary Ian Wilkes.
00:00:24.850 --> 00:00:25.812
Ian, how are you, sir?
00:00:25.891 --> 00:00:27.594
Have I called you legendary before?
00:00:28.513 --> 00:00:34.363
I'm not sure, but I'll try to live up to the legendary Ian Wilkes or whoever he is.
00:00:35.024 --> 00:00:36.746
So yeah, great to be with you, Jim.
00:00:36.948 --> 00:00:41.395
Always excited to be doing these podcasts, having these great conversations.
00:00:41.435 --> 00:00:44.981
I get a lot from them and I hope our listeners do as well.
00:00:46.003 --> 00:00:47.545
Well, I hope so too.
00:00:47.765 --> 00:00:54.176
And I'm grateful when we hear from them because the Spotify, do you have Spotify?
00:00:54.195 --> 00:00:55.158
I do.
00:00:55.874 --> 00:01:01.743
So Spotify Wrapped tells you everything that you've listened to in the previous year.
00:01:01.764 --> 00:01:17.750
And I've had several people message me to tell me that Inside Out with Jim Bennett and Ian Wilkes is in their top five of podcasts that they've listened to over the course of the year, which I thought was fascinating.
00:01:18.490 --> 00:01:19.893
So people are listening to us.
00:01:20.052 --> 00:01:22.417
So we have to be careful that we don't...
00:01:23.298 --> 00:01:25.280
you know, say really stupid things.
00:01:25.521 --> 00:01:26.822
Although maybe it's too late.
00:01:26.841 --> 00:01:30.085
Maybe the horse is already out of the barn on that one.
00:01:30.286 --> 00:01:32.489
I think that horse fled a long time ago.
00:01:34.691 --> 00:01:38.775
We're going to talk about a couple of things here today.
00:01:38.816 --> 00:01:50.469
But one of the things that's really interesting is that the church has just released or recently released a new introduction to the Book of Mormon.
00:01:51.201 --> 00:01:55.909
And this has caused a lot of controversy in the past when the church has done that.
00:01:56.129 --> 00:02:01.456
I've got in front of me a copy of the Book of Mormon that was published in 1981.
00:02:01.496 --> 00:02:08.086
And I think this is when white and delightsome became pure and delightsome.
00:02:09.489 --> 00:02:24.760
But it also has an introduction at the beginning that talks about the Book of Mormon is a volume of Holy Scripture written Comparable to the Bible, it is a record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas.
00:02:24.841 --> 00:02:28.825
It contains, as does the Bible, the fullness of the everlasting gospel.
00:02:29.507 --> 00:02:34.372
But it's the next paragraph that has caused a lot of controversy over the years.
00:02:34.993 --> 00:02:47.710
At the end of that paragraph, it says, After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians.
00:02:48.834 --> 00:03:10.141
And there was a new release, I'm not sure when it was, but it was relatively recently, where this introduction was altered so that it no longer says they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians, but it says they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.
00:03:10.883 --> 00:03:15.650
And a lot of people have made a lot of noise about that and concern about that.
00:03:19.074 --> 00:03:52.824
problematic because at no place does this introduction claim to have been a revelation at no place does i mean because later on on the title page uh we find that i mean right at the beginning you have a title page that says that this was taken from the plates of nephi so the title page we're told is actually part of the book of mormon translation this introduction is a much later edition much like the subtitle of the Book of Mormon, where it now says it's another testament of Jesus Christ.
00:03:53.985 --> 00:03:56.210
That was added long after the fact.
00:03:56.229 --> 00:04:20.713
So this introduction is not something that we're supposed to accept as canonized revelation, but the change from saying they were the principal ancestors to the fact that they were among the ancestors demonstrates that the church has essentially changed its position on an aspect of Book of Mormon historicity.
00:04:20.754 --> 00:04:40.613
When the Book of Mormon was first published, it was everybody's assumption, including Joseph Smith, that the Book of Mormon covered a geographical area that was an expanse from the top of North America to the bottom of South America.
00:04:41.442 --> 00:04:45.627
It's what they call the hemispheric model of the Book of Mormon.
00:04:46.406 --> 00:04:55.117
The idea that the Nephites and the Lamanites were the only people, essentially, that were in ancient America.
00:04:55.137 --> 00:05:12.677
And now Book of Mormon scholars that still accept the historicity of the Book of Mormon have gone through and recognized that the travel times in the Book of Mormon are prohibitive of that expanse of a geography.
00:05:12.737 --> 00:05:18.966
You had Lamanites and Nephites moving from place to place on foot.
00:05:20.687 --> 00:05:23.913
I've always found it interesting that nobody rides anywhere.
00:05:24.132 --> 00:05:31.083
For all the controversy about horses in the Book of Mormon, you don't ever have anybody talking about being on horseback.
00:05:31.184 --> 00:05:42.192
You do at one point have references to chariots, but you don't have long travel happening that isn't done on foot.
00:05:42.372 --> 00:05:48.839
And so scholars have gone through this and they've recreated a geographical model that is much smaller.
00:05:49.740 --> 00:05:59.069
The footprint is much smaller than the hemispheric model that the church had essentially adopted from the outset.
00:05:59.230 --> 00:06:07.358
And so I'm not sure if you can put a date on when the church has sort of shifted to this limited geography model.
00:06:08.129 --> 00:06:23.293
But that was reflected in the relatively new introduction to the Book of Mormon that changed it to among the ancestors as opposed to the principal ancestors.
00:06:23.954 --> 00:06:49.283
Well, now it's really interesting that just this week, the church has completely changed the introduction to the Book of Mormon And it doesn't make any reference whatsoever to Nephites or to Lamanites or to whether they are the principal ancestors or among the ancestors.
00:06:49.865 --> 00:06:51.726
It sidesteps that altogether.
00:06:51.747 --> 00:07:02.329
The only reference, I don't necessarily need to read the entire introduction of the Book of Mormon, But it completely changes the tone.
00:07:02.370 --> 00:07:05.033
It doesn't really get into the material in the Book of Mormon.
00:07:05.052 --> 00:07:14.523
The only reference to ancient America, it says, it talks about records that people keep, about God's interaction with them.
00:07:14.702 --> 00:07:24.233
It says, one such record was buried in a hillside in around AD 400 on the North American continent.
00:07:24.961 --> 00:07:27.786
That's the only geographical reference at all.
00:07:27.826 --> 00:07:37.278
The rest of it, it just talks about the doctrine of Jesus Christ, read the Book of Mormon with an open mind and heart.
00:07:38.478 --> 00:07:54.449
And I find nothing objectionable in the new introduction, and again, find nothing controversial about the fact that the church changes And the church is willing to change its materials to reflect the changes.
00:07:54.589 --> 00:08:02.459
But there are a lot of blogs and there are a lot of podcasts that are really kind of frustrated by this.
00:08:02.939 --> 00:08:13.370
I'm looking at the Exponent 2 blog where the headline is Erasing Church History, the New Book of Mormon Introduction.
00:08:14.471 --> 00:08:20.317
And the complaint is that it's lost all of its historical focus.
00:08:21.250 --> 00:08:28.478
It's just going away from what we've always taught and what we've taught before in the past.
00:08:29.678 --> 00:08:44.654
I don't want to dwell too much on this necessarily, but I think this is a jumping off point for what I think this larger discussion should be today.
00:08:44.695 --> 00:08:50.741
We've had a lot of feedback from our conversation with Marcus Hutber last week.
00:08:51.490 --> 00:08:59.841
which I ended up stepping away from at the end because I was very frustrated that we did not have a common set of facts.
00:09:02.484 --> 00:09:04.447
Just one thing to highlight.
00:09:05.086 --> 00:09:19.245
I had read a statement by Brigham Young where he talked about the law of God, which will always be so, that interracial relationships should be punished by death on the spot.
00:09:20.066 --> 00:09:28.014
And Marcus's response to that was, well, I'd been politically assassinated in the press before.
00:09:28.054 --> 00:09:29.756
I know how awful the press is.
00:09:29.797 --> 00:09:38.647
And so I'm not going to pay any attention to a third-hand statement by Brigham Young when we don't know if he actually said it.
00:09:38.667 --> 00:09:42.071
And this could have been reported in the press negatively.
00:09:42.110 --> 00:09:45.875
And since that, I got very frustrated at that.
00:09:46.034 --> 00:09:47.956
Since that, I went back and...
00:09:49.570 --> 00:09:52.634
where that quote had come from.
00:09:52.654 --> 00:09:55.379
And that quote was not a press quote.
00:09:55.440 --> 00:10:02.150
It came from the Journal of Discourses, which was a quasi-official publication of the church.
00:10:02.471 --> 00:10:07.519
The church itself didn't publish it, but they authorized the publication in England.
00:10:07.841 --> 00:10:13.389
And it was recorded by Brigham Young's primary stenographer, a man by George D.
00:10:13.509 --> 00:10:13.971
Watt.
00:10:15.192 --> 00:10:15.333
And...
00:10:15.714 --> 00:10:19.519
Brigham Young's sermons are all over the place in that.
00:10:19.539 --> 00:10:23.505
There are 390 sermons by Brigham Young.
00:10:24.528 --> 00:10:33.301
And in the first volume of the Journal of Discourses, Brigham Young personally edited his own sermons.
00:10:34.001 --> 00:10:41.693
And in future volumes, he didn't edit them, but he selected which sermons should be included in the publications.
00:10:42.337 --> 00:10:48.705
and he assigned his personal secretary to edit them, and he personally approved all of them being in there.
00:10:48.784 --> 00:11:04.102
So the quote that I gave came from 1863, so it would not have been in the first volume, but it would have been personally approved for inclusion in the Journal of Discourses by Brigham Young himself.
00:11:04.283 --> 00:11:20.028
So for anyone to say, well, geesh, this could have been a misquoted, this is something that Brigham Young said, whether he said it word for word or not, he was later reviewing it and determined that it should be included in the Journal of Discourses.
00:11:20.149 --> 00:11:29.119
So to just wave it away and say that Brigham Young didn't say this, that cannot be sustained by the historical record.
00:11:30.139 --> 00:11:34.686
So, I mean, that's just the one specific thing I want to address from last week.
00:11:35.365 --> 00:12:02.014
00:12:02.054 --> 00:12:04.298
You know, you had the Spencer W.
00:12:04.357 --> 00:12:09.645
Kimball miracle of forgiveness position, which was that all gay people are voluntary perverts.
00:12:10.587 --> 00:12:11.870
That's the word he uses.
00:12:11.889 --> 00:12:34.451
I think it's an offensive word and it's really kind of frustrating, but they chose to be gay and they can choose not to be gay and they should expect to not be gay if they pray hard enough, if they pound on the door, The door will open, and they will enter a new life of heterosexuality as a result of their righteousness.
00:12:34.490 --> 00:12:36.293
Well, the church no longer teaches that.
00:12:36.393 --> 00:12:45.225
The church recognizes that people do not choose their attractions, and those attractions don't go away with sufficient righteousness.
00:12:46.187 --> 00:12:51.494
And we now recognize, you know, the church in 2008 was...
00:12:52.322 --> 00:12:58.488
asking its members to go and donate money and time to defeat Proposition 8 in California.
00:12:58.508 --> 00:13:06.576
Oh, I'm sorry, to pass Proposition 8 in California in order to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.
00:13:06.596 --> 00:13:19.610
And much more recently, as the church has lost that battle in every way it is possible to lose that battle, the church has lost in the courts, the church has lost in the legislatures, and now...
00:13:20.577 --> 00:13:25.024
Gay marriage, same-sex marriage is the law of the land throughout the United States.
00:13:25.183 --> 00:13:38.921
And the church has endorsed the Respect for Marriage Act, which codifies same-sex marriage into law throughout the entirety of the United States and all United States territories.
00:13:40.143 --> 00:13:44.488
And that's a dramatic shift from just as recently as 2008.
00:13:44.969 --> 00:13:56.046
I mean, you can go issue by issue by issue You know, we went last week, we talked about race in the priesthood and the church's position on that has changed dramatically.
00:13:56.066 --> 00:14:03.534
In 2013, the church specifically disavowed everything it had taught about the reasons for the priesthood and temple ban.
00:14:04.035 --> 00:14:33.323
We've disavowed the idea that black people were somehow less valiant in the pre-existence, that they were somehow, that they bore the curse of Cain and all these other things that we were using as, as justification for what I very strongly believe was a massive mistake initiated by Brigham Young and perpetuated by his successors.
00:14:33.364 --> 00:14:50.553
The church has not been willing to quite go that far, although Deseret Book has now published a book called Let's Talk About Race in the Priesthood by Paul Reeve, who was one of the principal authors of the Race and the Priesthood Gospel Topics essay.
00:14:50.595 --> 00:14:57.083
And in that Deseret Book book, it specifically says, yes, this was a mistake.
00:14:57.784 --> 00:15:03.013
So you're seeing the church change on all of these issues.
00:15:03.793 --> 00:15:07.499
And from my perspective, that is a very, very good thing.
00:15:07.538 --> 00:15:18.265
And I think it's something that we ought to expect because we are a church that is built on the foundation of continuing revelation.
00:15:18.466 --> 00:15:23.052
And what good is continuing revelation if it doesn't change anything?
00:15:23.573 --> 00:15:31.104
It's really bizarre to me that the church has evolved into this idea of unchangeable doctrine.
00:15:31.183 --> 00:15:35.450
These things can never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever change.
00:15:36.230 --> 00:15:43.822
And at the same time, we say we're the only true church because we're the only church with continuing revelation from heaven.
00:15:44.706 --> 00:15:47.089
And how can you have both at the same time?
00:15:47.249 --> 00:15:59.861
How can you have this rigid, unchanging church and yet also have continuing revelation from heaven, which can come as long as it doesn't change anything?
00:15:59.902 --> 00:16:01.945
It's just bizarre to me.
00:16:03.166 --> 00:16:13.937
But I think the problem is exacerbated by the fact that when the church does change, you know, I've listed all these changes on all these issues.
00:16:14.498 --> 00:16:21.926
And when the church does change, the church does not acknowledge that it's changed.
00:16:22.427 --> 00:16:25.389
And I think that's really one of the principal problems of this.
00:16:25.910 --> 00:16:37.823
The church doesn't announce that when it issues a new introduction to the Book of Mormon, that it is any way contrary to previous introductions to the Book of Mormon.
00:16:37.864 --> 00:16:43.490
When the church changed it from principal ancestors to among the ancestors.
00:16:43.912 --> 00:16:46.375
It did so quietly without telling anybody.
00:16:46.414 --> 00:16:55.827
And we were all, the problem is we're all supposed to sort of pretend that this is the way it's always been.
00:16:55.868 --> 00:17:02.278
That, okay, yeah, well, we always sort of taught the limited geography model of the Book of Mormon.
00:17:02.317 --> 00:17:04.820
This is really no different from the way it was.
00:17:04.941 --> 00:17:08.145
No, it's actually a rather radical departure.
00:17:09.153 --> 00:17:24.684
from the way Joseph Smith thought about the Book of Mormon and from the way the early saints thought about the Book of Mormon and really the way that just about every member of the church thought about the Book of Mormon until well into the 20th century, late 20th century.
00:17:25.727 --> 00:17:49.973
And this new idea of the limited geography model is not What I was taught as a child growing up in the church, and when I had my little illustrated stories from the Book of Mormon series that I used to read from, that very much talked about Lamanites not having a suntan, but rather being cursed with dark skin.
00:17:50.013 --> 00:17:54.499
And the church quietly changes these things.
00:17:54.539 --> 00:18:06.398
The gospel topics essays that changed how we look at the race and priesthood ban, Those disavowals did not come from the pulpit in general conference.
00:18:06.499 --> 00:18:13.651
They were released without any fanfare, quietly online, without anybody knowing about it.
00:18:13.791 --> 00:18:26.854
And I would bet that if you were to poll the general membership of the church, I would think a solid majority of the members of the church don't even know those gospel topics essays are there.
00:18:27.554 --> 00:18:30.538
Because they've never been discussed in general conference.
00:18:30.597 --> 00:18:39.689
They're not brought up in any kind of public way that would call attention to them.
00:18:40.328 --> 00:18:49.721
So I think this problem is perpetuated by the fact that when the church changes, it doesn't want you to know that it's changed.
00:18:49.881 --> 00:18:55.807
It just wants you to pretend or believe that this is the way it has always been.
00:18:57.761 --> 00:19:15.707
And that becomes a serious problem when you encounter the kind of thinking we encountered in our last podcast, which is you have people that continue to cling to the previous teachings.
00:19:16.248 --> 00:19:24.425
You have people who believe that, well, no, in fact, black people were somehow less valiant in the pre-existence.
00:19:24.506 --> 00:19:33.516
The explanation we got last week was a little sort of skewed that they sort of voluntarily chose not to come to this earth.
00:19:34.376 --> 00:19:37.779
I'm sorry, to come to this earth, but not to have the priesthood when they got here.
00:19:37.819 --> 00:19:54.285
And that idea blew up in the face of the church in 2012 because when Mitt Romney was the Republican nominee for president, There was a lot of attention given to the church.
00:19:54.345 --> 00:19:57.351
They called it the Mormon moment in the media.
00:19:57.411 --> 00:19:59.855
President Nelson would probably have been upset by that.
00:19:59.954 --> 00:20:10.674
But during the Mormon moment, the Washington Post ran a series of articles about the church's position with regard to blacks in the priesthood.
00:20:12.038 --> 00:20:14.362
And they interviewed a BYU professor.
00:20:15.137 --> 00:20:19.863
by the name of Randy Bott, and he was a very popular BYU professor.
00:20:19.963 --> 00:20:26.111
Rate My Professors had his rating higher than any other professor at BYU.
00:20:27.372 --> 00:20:32.198
And he gave this explanation that was very similar to the one we heard last week.
00:20:32.838 --> 00:20:42.609
He talked about how it was an act of mercy not to give the priesthood to black people because they weren't ready for it.
00:20:43.201 --> 00:20:51.758
I'm not sure if he ever said they didn't want it, but he said it would be like giving the car keys to young children.
00:20:52.819 --> 00:20:57.890
And you're doing young children a favor by not giving them something they're not ready for.
00:20:59.092 --> 00:21:08.935
And this caused a huge backlash from people who thought, This is a terrible, terrible racist explanation for this.
00:21:09.737 --> 00:21:15.723
And the church even issued a statement clarifying that that is not the position of the church.
00:21:15.903 --> 00:21:21.290
And Randy Bott ended up being forced into an early retirement as a result.
00:21:22.333 --> 00:21:29.342
But the problem is, Randy Bott was just saying everything that he had been taught.
00:21:29.794 --> 00:21:30.634
throughout his life.
00:21:30.694 --> 00:21:33.137
He wasn't making something up.
00:21:33.558 --> 00:21:40.929
These were things that he was taught in order to justify a racist ban on priesthood and temple blessings.
00:21:42.009 --> 00:21:49.319
And the church just sort of threw Professor Bott under the bus rather than say, oh, you know what?
00:21:49.359 --> 00:21:55.027
Professor Bott is reflecting an earlier understanding, but we have since changed.
00:21:55.528 --> 00:21:56.890
We no longer believe that.
00:21:57.473 --> 00:22:07.148
Instead, the church's statement was very much along the lines of, this is not the church's position, and the implication was, this has never been the church's position.
00:22:07.209 --> 00:22:25.117
It's ridiculous to think that the church would ever think this, when in fact, Professor Bott's position was very much in line with mainstream thinking in the church, and I think to some degree is still in line with mainstream thinking today.
00:22:25.410 --> 00:22:26.211
in the church.
00:22:26.290 --> 00:22:42.430
There are still so many members of the church who, not having been given any kind of explicit instruction to abandon those wrong ideas that have since changed, they still cling to them.
00:22:43.371 --> 00:22:45.213
We find this in our own ward.
00:22:46.535 --> 00:22:57.654
My wife went to Relief Society where a member of the Relief Society said, oh, the race in the priesthood essay is wrong and it's going to be changed because it's absolutely wrong.
00:22:58.615 --> 00:23:14.073
Because this member was sort of clinging to these same outdated ideas about race that we very much taught and we have now quietly disavowed, but not loudly enough so people can hear it and believe it.
00:23:14.773 --> 00:23:22.909
And you can go through the gamut of any controversial topic in church history or doctrine.
00:23:23.951 --> 00:23:27.017
And you can demonstrate significant changes.
00:23:27.317 --> 00:23:33.048
We heard, for instance, a little about the idea of sort of young earth creationism.
00:23:33.990 --> 00:23:52.817
Marcus mentioned that there was a certain sort of tree that he couldn't believe could have survived the flood in and then said, okay, except that tree, it's on the tops of mountains, so those mountains wouldn't have been covered with water when the entire earth was covered in a flood.
00:23:52.836 --> 00:23:59.304
And so that makes sense that they could have survived and they could have predated the flood.
00:24:00.246 --> 00:24:03.409
Well, quietly, the church no longer...
00:24:03.449 --> 00:24:11.038
This one's a little difficult because the church never explicitly...
00:24:12.130 --> 00:24:22.163
was willing to say that the earth is only 7,000 years old and the flood took place 4,000 years ago and the flood was a global flood that covered all the earth.
00:24:22.683 --> 00:24:25.907
That was certainly Joseph Fielding Smith's position.
00:24:25.968 --> 00:24:26.868
That was not David O.
00:24:26.909 --> 00:24:27.851
McKay's position.
00:24:28.571 --> 00:24:39.326
Joseph Fielding Smith tried very hard to get that essentially canonized by having the church publish his book, Man, His Origin and Destiny.
00:24:40.001 --> 00:24:42.684
which is an anti-evolution screed that David O.
00:24:42.704 --> 00:24:43.464
McKay hated.
00:24:43.484 --> 00:24:44.807
And David O.
00:24:44.846 --> 00:24:48.770
McKay refused to allow to be published by the church.
00:24:49.550 --> 00:25:03.785
And the idea of young earth creationism has always sort of been a strain in Latter-day Saint thinking, but we've never explicitly canonized anything that says that.
00:25:04.865 --> 00:25:12.365
Well, now I'm backing off on that because I think Doctrine and Covenants section 77 talks about 7,000 years of Earth's temporal history.
00:25:13.448 --> 00:25:16.731
And so I think that's probably a canonization of that.
00:25:16.771 --> 00:25:31.192
But the church quietly has abandoned all of the early statements that talk about scientifically ludicrous things, like the Earth only being 7,000 years old.
00:25:31.231 --> 00:25:35.278
And the official statement is, we don't know.
00:25:36.193 --> 00:26:01.349
And if you go to church universities, if you go to Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University Provo, Brigham Young University Idaho, you go to the science classes that address things like geology and evolution, and all scientifically accurate or up-to-date information is welcome in those classes, is taught in those classes.
00:26:01.890 --> 00:26:05.874
They do not teach that the earth is only 7,000 years old.
00:26:05.933 --> 00:26:08.276
They do not reject the theory of evolution.
00:26:08.316 --> 00:26:34.478
And so the church, I think, has made great strides towards accepting the science on those topics that a lot of people who grew up without that kind of scientific acceptance or that embrace of science and who grew up listening to Joseph Fielding Smith and Bruce R.
00:26:34.518 --> 00:26:40.665
McConkie, who in Mormon doctrine explicitly rejects the idea of evolution.
00:26:40.705 --> 00:26:42.709
My mission president, Bruce R.
00:26:42.729 --> 00:26:59.432
McConkie's son, Joseph Fielding McConkie, if you read his book, Answers to Gospel Questions, which was only published, what, 25 years ago, it explicitly says, no, you cannot reconcile the theory of evolution with the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:27:00.353 --> 00:27:12.755
Now, That is not the official church position, but it had enough prominence within the church that it felt like the church's official position.
00:27:12.795 --> 00:27:34.119
00:27:35.281 --> 00:27:44.775
And everybody recognized that, you know, if you had a question, Mormon doctrine had this sort of encyclopedic list of answers.
00:27:44.934 --> 00:27:47.499
You could go and say, well, I don't know what the church's position here.
00:27:47.558 --> 00:27:49.642
Let's go see what Mormon doctrine has to say.
00:27:50.241 --> 00:27:52.203
But we've moved away from that.
00:27:52.243 --> 00:27:53.285
We have changed.
00:27:53.484 --> 00:27:56.748
The church has changed, and change is a good thing.
00:27:58.369 --> 00:28:04.915
But how do we deal with that when so many members of the church aren't willing to change?
00:28:05.517 --> 00:28:08.779
So that's my question to you as I conclude my opening rant.
00:28:09.440 --> 00:28:10.961
What do we do about this, Ian?
00:28:12.202 --> 00:28:13.584
How do we handle this problem?
00:28:15.385 --> 00:28:16.247
And is it a problem?
00:28:17.188 --> 00:28:19.390
Do you think this is as big a problem as I think it is?
00:28:20.961 --> 00:28:24.545
You've covered a lot of ground over the last 35 minutes.
00:28:26.586 --> 00:28:29.250
Have I ranted for 35 minutes?
00:28:29.349 --> 00:28:30.310
I apologize for that.
00:28:30.951 --> 00:28:31.491
That's okay.
00:28:31.772 --> 00:28:32.933
It's a lot of information.
00:28:33.413 --> 00:28:34.895
And I just kind of want to...
00:28:35.316 --> 00:28:38.499
You made some really important points that I just want to...
00:28:38.659 --> 00:28:41.021
And I'll come back to that question in a second.
00:28:44.644 --> 00:28:49.210
If we look at the history of the church, the quotes from the prophets, the apostles...
00:28:50.817 --> 00:28:58.088
prior to, up until the 1980s, and certainly if you go back to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Wilford Woodruff, Joseph G.
00:28:58.108 --> 00:29:14.353
Oldsmith, Bruce Amakonke, there is a sense of certainty, a degree of confidence that they know certain things as facts, and they communicate and use language where they make absolute statements about history.
00:29:14.393 --> 00:29:19.420
If you look at the 1981, as I say, you covered so much material there.
00:29:19.460 --> 00:29:27.790
You've referenced the 1981 introduction of the Book of Mormon, which is a very important point, I think, in our conversation here.
00:29:27.810 --> 00:29:39.184
It talks about the Lamanites, the only ones to survive, and they're the principal ancestors of the American Indians.
00:29:39.746 --> 00:29:56.883
If you look at that introduction, you look at so many other canonical and other terms and references, identified in the Pearl of Great Price, Jesus the Christ, Articles of Faith.
00:29:57.503 --> 00:29:59.005
Look at a lot of articles that were written.
00:29:59.025 --> 00:30:05.732
There was so much confidence and certainty that the brethren knew certain things for a fact.
00:30:06.453 --> 00:30:08.696
And this is, of course, before the internet.
00:30:09.157 --> 00:30:26.460
And now, as things have changed and the internet has opened up the opportunities to research and to access and to check, the history of the Book of Mormon, the geography of the Book of Mormon, the church, understandably, has lost a lot of its confidence.
00:30:27.181 --> 00:30:33.390
And if you look at the statements and the tone and phrases the church uses now, they're a lot safer than what they used to be.
00:30:33.430 --> 00:30:36.394
Back then, it was very much black and white.
00:30:36.414 --> 00:30:45.127
These are statements we're making based on facts, and those facts are revealed by revelation.
00:30:45.208 --> 00:30:48.712
Yes, we've got some physical evidence, but where we don't have the physical evidence...
00:30:49.442 --> 00:30:57.250
You need to rely on faith, because we're the only true church upon the face of the earth, and we've got the facts, the information that comes through revelation.
00:30:57.872 --> 00:30:59.673
That's not the position of the church now.
00:30:59.713 --> 00:31:05.161
The church is very concerned, very nervous about making statements.
00:31:05.761 --> 00:31:12.269
If you look at the general conference talks, a lot of the talks are very safe, and I can understand why the church would want to stay away from...
00:31:13.250 --> 00:31:22.661
anything historical to do with the Book of Mormon or making any statements from the pulpit at General Conference which are significant or too significant.
00:31:22.800 --> 00:31:31.611
And these changes that have come about, many of them, to your point, have happened very subtly and very quietly.
00:31:31.631 --> 00:31:41.521
The other point you mentioned, item that you mentioned, is the changes to the Book of Mormon introduction.
00:31:42.114 --> 00:31:49.843
If you go to the app, the general LDS tools app on your phone there, it hasn't changed.
00:31:51.125 --> 00:32:03.839
There's still references to Joseph Smith, Moroni, the plates, references to the fact that, or the statement that the church believes and teaches that the Book of Mormon scripture is comparable to the Bible.
00:32:04.181 --> 00:32:06.282
That's still on the main LDS tools app.
00:32:07.484 --> 00:32:11.869
This app is the Book of Mormon app, where you get the new introduction.
00:32:12.513 --> 00:32:14.476
And it is very significant.
00:32:14.635 --> 00:32:26.468
It's another example where the church is trying to change and modify its language and make the language and the position of the church more palatable, more acceptable.
00:32:27.087 --> 00:32:29.810
I think in some ways it's a very smart move.
00:32:30.551 --> 00:32:44.838
You look at the new introduction, and I think it's written and designed for a certain group, an investigator group, a younger investigator group, who can read it and kind of connect to it on a very personal way.
00:32:44.858 --> 00:32:49.586
I see this as being partly a very smart move on the part of the church.
00:32:50.086 --> 00:32:53.732
I mean, the opening statement would resonate, I think, with most people.
00:32:54.513 --> 00:32:55.635
God is your heavenly father.
00:32:55.655 --> 00:32:56.497
He loves you.
00:32:56.517 --> 00:32:59.382
And there is so much he wants to teach you.
00:32:59.402 --> 00:33:10.778
I mean, it's a very completely radical shift from the 1981 where The Book of Mormon is a volume of Holy Scripture comparable to the Bible.
00:33:10.858 --> 00:33:17.208
It is a record of dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as is the Bible, the fullness of the annals of the gospel.
00:33:17.729 --> 00:33:20.332
One, you've got this very scriptural tone.
00:33:20.613 --> 00:33:26.141
This King James tone is written even into the introduction of the Book of Mormon.
00:33:26.621 --> 00:33:32.009
And here you've got a very different language, different approach completely.
00:33:32.048 --> 00:33:41.305
And I think there are a lot of qualities, actually, and a lot of advantages by communicating and introducing the Book of Mormon using some of this language.
00:33:41.786 --> 00:33:43.028
There are some disadvantages.
00:33:43.208 --> 00:33:46.613
And again, it depends on who you are as a person.
00:33:47.232 --> 00:34:09.132
For someone like me, my age, I think a lot of people like me who are maybe like the intellectual side and like the historical side and the scriptural references, the fact that there's no reference to Joseph Smith, There's no references to the, you know, it being a record of the ancient Americas.
00:34:12.657 --> 00:34:17.204
There's no reference to the plates, no reference to being, you know, comparable Holy Scripture.
00:34:17.224 --> 00:34:27.559
The downside of that, it loses its scriptural integrity by removing those references.
00:34:28.119 --> 00:34:32.065
But it all depends on who they are targeting.
00:34:32.418 --> 00:34:33.639
with this introduction.
00:34:34.742 --> 00:34:44.440
And so they still retain a lot of the original text and language in the introduction in the LDS Tools app.
00:34:44.822 --> 00:34:45.764
I want to be clear about that.
00:34:46.664 --> 00:34:49.570
They do talk about it being a comparable scripture, et cetera.
00:34:50.231 --> 00:34:51.896
But in this version, they haven't.
00:34:51.996 --> 00:34:54.900
And I think they've done that because of a different demographic.
00:34:55.425 --> 00:35:03.114
If that is the case, and I think it is, then that's a pretty smart move because I do like a lot of the qualities in the new introduction.
00:35:03.775 --> 00:35:12.045
Some of the podcasts out there are ripping this to shreds, saying that the church is deliberately trying to change its history.
00:35:12.206 --> 00:35:13.447
I don't see it like that.
00:35:13.507 --> 00:35:14.268
I'm not in the church.
00:35:14.329 --> 00:35:20.275
I've got a lot of issues with the church on certain things, as you know.
00:35:20.856 --> 00:35:23.619
But I think the church isn't trying to...
00:35:25.762 --> 00:35:27.764
come across as changing the doctrine.
00:35:27.784 --> 00:35:29.144
I think it's for a different demographic.
00:35:29.646 --> 00:35:35.652
I think the point that, I think the fact that they have made these changes without communicating them.
00:35:36.172 --> 00:35:36.833
But we're saying that.
00:35:36.873 --> 00:35:43.500
We don't know if the, usually the bishops, I suspect the bishops have got a memo internally.
00:35:43.519 --> 00:35:58.835
In fact, I bet money on it, that they have a memo and that they've been advised that these changes are going to take place And any members who've got questions about this, then they can approach the bishop or members of the stake presidency.
00:35:59.335 --> 00:36:03.079
So we don't know what type of communication the church has been involved in internally.
00:36:05.023 --> 00:36:11.289
But again, to your point, they do make changes often without communicating it from the pulpit.
00:36:11.349 --> 00:36:14.432
And they're doing it because they're nervous and they're concerned.
00:36:14.452 --> 00:36:16.175
They don't know what the reaction is going to be.
00:36:17.016 --> 00:36:18.617
They're very concerned about history.
00:36:18.637 --> 00:36:22.461
They're very concerned about things, Jim, where they can be disproved.
00:36:23.489 --> 00:36:28.416
You talked earlier, you talked last week on the Marcus Hooker, which I'll get into in a second, about facts.
00:36:29.257 --> 00:36:33.663
We have to agree on some basic facts, otherwise we can't have a conversation.
00:36:34.664 --> 00:36:44.318
Well, the facts are that the church has made statements on polygamy, on same-sex marriage.
00:36:45.090 --> 00:36:49.195
on the Book of Mormon, on the Book of Mormon translation process.
00:36:49.335 --> 00:36:50.135
It's made those statements.
00:36:50.237 --> 00:37:01.791
And historically, as I said before, it's done so with a great degree of confidence, overconfidence and certainty, and to the internet, and to people having the ability now to research this.
00:37:02.271 --> 00:37:12.889
And now, over the last few decades, the church has been found to be wrong, proven to be wrong, And he's been very embarrassed publicly.
00:37:12.929 --> 00:37:15.574
He's very concerned, very nervous about public opinion.
00:37:15.893 --> 00:37:20.201
Think about all the different audiences that the church has to satisfy.
00:37:20.240 --> 00:37:33.460
And then if you look at those audiences, the different demographics that are in those audiences, look at the older generation, the senior folks in the church who have this older version of the church.
00:37:33.501 --> 00:37:36.867
That's what you talked about, different churches.
00:37:37.086 --> 00:37:38.869
Marcus inventing a new church.
00:37:39.617 --> 00:37:44.824
I think within the church, there are different versions of the church, depending on the demographic.
00:37:45.346 --> 00:37:47.409
Older people hang on to the older teachings.
00:37:47.889 --> 00:37:56.802
Younger people are more flexible in terms of a nuance, in terms of how they see things.
00:37:56.862 --> 00:38:00.547
And you've talked about this convincingly on previous podcasts.
00:38:00.907 --> 00:38:06.896
So I think that's very important background context as to what the church is doing, why it's doing it.
00:38:06.936 --> 00:38:11.922
I I have an issue with the church making changes quietly.
00:38:11.943 --> 00:38:20.876
I think changing the principal ancestors of the American Indians to amongst the ancestors of the American Indians is very significant.
00:38:21.438 --> 00:38:26.545
And I think it did that because it couldn't verify that.
00:38:26.666 --> 00:38:27.567
It could disprove that.
00:38:28.407 --> 00:38:30.331
And you can disprove it based on facts.
00:38:31.313 --> 00:38:32.153
And facts matter.
00:38:33.762 --> 00:38:35.103
Facts matter and they're important.
00:38:35.143 --> 00:38:51.005
And that's where the church, when it gets to things like on a factual basis, the church in its correlation committee will be doing fact checking and making sure that it's correlated and it's not saying or doing things not based on facts.
00:38:51.965 --> 00:38:53.869
And that leads me to another really important point.
00:38:53.929 --> 00:38:57.512
And I'm getting to your question very close here now.
00:38:58.835 --> 00:39:15.121
The point that the reality, rather, that there are members in the church who, even today in 2024, hold on to old-fashioned, antiquated doctrines and positions and views.
00:39:16.403 --> 00:39:18.728
And you still have that in the church.
00:39:18.887 --> 00:39:19.909
It's alive and well.
00:39:20.150 --> 00:39:25.117
It's probably a large minority, depending on the age.
00:39:25.998 --> 00:39:37.947
I've said before that I know people who are in the church now, who still today do not accept or believe that blacks should hold the priesthood, even now, even today.
00:39:37.987 --> 00:39:46.016
And these are a group of people in the church who are very dangerous, and in fact, are holding the church back.
00:39:46.876 --> 00:39:50.742
You said just now that the church has made progress.
00:39:51.121 --> 00:39:58.429
We complain about the church not making enough progress, that it takes 10 years to change something or 20 years to change something.
00:39:58.978 --> 00:40:01.161
There's a lot of evidence to support that, for sure.
00:40:01.782 --> 00:40:04.246
But when it does make the change, we criticize it.
00:40:04.666 --> 00:40:07.150
When it makes good change, we can criticize it.
00:40:07.190 --> 00:40:09.353
We can be very negative.
00:40:09.614 --> 00:40:16.264
And I think that's a mistake for certain people who criticize the church for making good changes.
00:40:16.284 --> 00:40:24.958
I mean, for goodness sake, this whole podcast, a big part of this podcast, is conversations about where...
00:40:25.474 --> 00:40:35.505
we think and where our guests think, the church can make improvements, be more inclusive, be more thoughtful, be kinder.
00:40:35.565 --> 00:40:37.648
We want the church to be a better church.
00:40:39.369 --> 00:40:44.856
So if the church is listening and making progress on key things and moving forward, great.
00:40:45.295 --> 00:40:58.744
The problem is when you've got this old-fashioned, antiquated, dangerous views of certain individuals in the church, it does the church a disservice because it holds it back.
00:40:59.525 --> 00:41:07.253
The church, however, has a responsibility to address these views that some of these members have in the church.
00:41:07.974 --> 00:41:27.637
If you've got people in the church that perpetuate views and positions that the church has moved on from, it's the responsibility of the local leaders to address that, and it's the responsibility of the church to make sure that the members are in line with the current doctrines and teachings of the church.
00:41:28.018 --> 00:41:45.115
The problem is, with the church, it's struggling and is nervous about how fast it can bring some of those senior individuals, people who, or any individuals rather, who have hold on to those teachings and positions which are now outdated.
00:41:45.155 --> 00:41:55.005
How does it bring those into the 21st century without losing them, without offending them, and keeping in mind, you know, the tithe payers.
00:41:55.525 --> 00:41:59.672
And often these individuals are the bedrock of the church.
00:42:00.432 --> 00:42:02.056
They've served in senior positions.
00:42:02.657 --> 00:42:07.503
They've got a vast amount of experience, Jim, 20, 30, 40, 50 years in the church.
00:42:08.025 --> 00:42:10.688
And the church doesn't want to alienate that group.
00:42:11.630 --> 00:42:19.101
The problem we have is that these individuals hold on to extremely dangerous views.
00:42:19.809 --> 00:42:23.795
And not only do they hold on to them, they perpetuate them.
00:42:25.516 --> 00:42:28.199
And some of the views can be very extreme.
00:42:28.239 --> 00:42:37.490
You know, we talked last week with Marcus about, Marcus said that black people chose to be black.
00:42:38.291 --> 00:42:39.434
They were self-cursed.
00:42:39.893 --> 00:42:42.898
I find that offensive.
00:42:43.197 --> 00:42:44.500
You know, Marcus spoke plainly.
00:42:44.519 --> 00:42:46.041
I will speak plainly.
00:42:46.722 --> 00:42:49.885
He said things that I'm very uncomfortable with.
00:42:50.485 --> 00:42:53.047
And in fact, the church has moved on from that.
00:42:53.548 --> 00:42:57.472
The church is very clear that black skin is a curse.
00:42:58.072 --> 00:42:58.974
That's the position.
00:42:59.735 --> 00:43:01.036
It should have always been like that.
00:43:01.076 --> 00:43:02.277
It wasn't.
00:43:02.797 --> 00:43:03.739
The church changed.
00:43:03.918 --> 00:43:04.519
It improved.
00:43:04.960 --> 00:43:08.724
Maybe not as much has gone far as what people would hope, but it's improved.
00:43:09.483 --> 00:43:10.385
We have to acknowledge that.
00:43:10.485 --> 00:43:21.976
And when it changes and improves, and we said, this is part of our podcast system, you know, is to acknowledge the improvements of the church, then let's give the church the credit where it deserves, where it's made those changes.
00:43:22.275 --> 00:43:32.911
And let's deal with old-fashioned, antiquated views where the church, individuals hold on to often dangerous and harmful teachings.
00:43:33.452 --> 00:43:38.199
Things like sexual sins is worse than murder, for example.
00:43:38.880 --> 00:44:42.077
00:44:42.657 --> 00:45:29.690
individuals in the church because they they feel like this and they can't reconcile it and they're told that what the feeling is wrong they're told what the feeling is is a sin and god doesn't love them god won't accept them as they are they have to change and they can't because it's who they are and it's how they feel and they feel rejected and they feel lost and they feel So these, if we think for one second that these antiquated, outdated, dangerous, toxic views of certain individuals that still exist in the church today, if we don't think that they can cause harm, then we're mistaken because they can, especially when we're dealing with young people, you know, pliable minds.
00:45:30.251 --> 00:45:47.443
And I think the church has a responsibility to make sure that in the church, people who are progressive thinkers are who are balanced in their perspective, who accept the changes of the church, that they are the ones who should be called into youth and to primary callings.
00:45:48.204 --> 00:45:50.688
Because, you know, that's absolutely critical.
00:45:51.409 --> 00:46:04.744
I've got a whole here list of, which I won't go into, examples of dangerous doctrines and teachings that were the standard, if you like, in the past that we accepted that was black and white.
00:46:05.686 --> 00:46:09.798
And Unfortunately, on quite a few of them, the church has changed.
00:46:09.838 --> 00:46:11.702
Not all of them, but the church has changed.
00:46:13.063 --> 00:46:17.170
And that brings me to your question.
00:46:17.210 --> 00:46:20.293
So just to remind you of your question again, I want to make the connection.
00:46:20.474 --> 00:46:22.617
What do we do about it?
00:46:24.500 --> 00:46:25.963
In regards to the dangerous doctrines?
00:46:26.463 --> 00:46:26.643
Sure.
00:46:27.324 --> 00:46:27.485
Yeah.
00:46:27.824 --> 00:46:29.648
Well, you've said this all along.
00:46:29.708 --> 00:46:39.161
The thread through all these podcasts, one of the threads, we've said it, to be open and transparent about the doctrine of the church and the history.
00:46:39.501 --> 00:46:41.804
And if we don't know something, let's say it.
00:46:42.545 --> 00:46:44.728
If we don't have an answer, say, look, we don't have an answer.
00:46:44.768 --> 00:46:46.110
Here's the facts.
00:46:46.972 --> 00:46:49.315
You know, let's get a balanced position on the facts.
00:46:50.117 --> 00:46:51.960
Let's quote reliable sources.
00:46:52.099 --> 00:46:59.952
You know, he's not a member of the church, but he's a very successful and a very reliable, dependable scholar or historian.
00:47:00.632 --> 00:47:03.096
He's done his research and the facts are there.
00:47:03.175 --> 00:47:07.233
So, so, so, cite that as a source, a reliable source.
00:47:07.773 --> 00:47:13.099
Don't just quote and cite internal sources like apologetics, you know, like go to Fair Mormon.
00:47:13.800 --> 00:47:20.849
Okay, you know, I mean, I think Fair Mormons, I see Fair Mormons as a cop-out for the church, frankly.
00:47:21.630 --> 00:47:23.914
It's like, it's part of us, but not part of us.
00:47:23.974 --> 00:47:33.246
They do their own thing, but we both know there's a direct connection between Fair Mormon and the church and apologetics in the church and the brethren.
00:47:33.730 --> 00:47:39.358
And the church communicates stuff through those organizations that are arm's length.
00:47:39.719 --> 00:47:43.405
I think that is, frankly, a bit cowardly.
00:47:44.027 --> 00:48:10.364
I think if the church could be very clear and more transparent and more accountable on what it says and what it teaches and not introduce changes through the back door, even though the changes are great, often really good changes, let's be upfront and open and honest about what we believe, what we teach, what we know, or what we think we know.
00:48:10.385 --> 00:48:19.474
And if we say something as a statement, and we say it with certainty, and we say, look, we, you know, instead of saying that we, unless you really, really know based on fact, that's different.
00:48:20.836 --> 00:48:23.840
But if you think you know, just say you think you know.
00:48:25.943 --> 00:48:31.757
But this, and even say this could change based on science and new discoveries.
00:48:32.237 --> 00:48:33.539
To me, that's intelligence.
00:48:34.199 --> 00:48:41.108
You know, the whole basis of science is that we have a understanding of something until the research changes it.
00:48:42.050 --> 00:48:45.233
Like now, there's a big conversation over whether the Big Bang happened or not.
00:48:45.335 --> 00:48:56.889
We're now moving towards, well, there's some great power, some great force behind the events that created the universe, which I've always felt like that, anyhow.
00:48:57.634 --> 00:49:02.240
And so our opinions and views change when new facts come to light.
00:49:02.440 --> 00:49:02.922
And that's good.
00:49:03.822 --> 00:49:04.603
That's a positive thing.
00:49:05.125 --> 00:49:10.652
But let's be upfront, open, and honest about changes.
00:49:11.675 --> 00:49:26.858
Let's be more pragmatic and more proactive about dealing with old-fashioned, dinosaur, dangerous, toxic teachings that were there in the past, but we don't teach that anymore.
00:49:27.362 --> 00:49:28.923
You know, we've gone from the polygamy.
00:49:28.963 --> 00:49:29.686
Look at the polygamy.
00:49:29.726 --> 00:49:30.606
We used to teach polygamy.
00:49:31.268 --> 00:49:38.860
We've now gone, you know, we've poured in huge resources over the years to tell the world we don't practice polygamy.
00:49:39.300 --> 00:49:42.666
You know, when you knock on the door, oh, you're the mormons.
00:49:42.686 --> 00:49:45.550
How many wives do you have?
00:49:45.630 --> 00:49:49.576
I lost count how many times I was asked on the doorstep in Scotland how many wives I had.
00:49:49.655 --> 00:49:54.994
I just thought, I said, and then I would joke, I said, well, we don't, have more than one wife.
00:49:55.054 --> 00:49:57.739
I said, we might have more than one girlfriend, but we don't have more than one wife.
00:49:58.159 --> 00:49:59.922
I kind of make a joke of it.
00:50:00.422 --> 00:50:06.990
But the church has poured huge resources to convince the world it doesn't practice polygamy.
00:50:07.952 --> 00:50:21.490
And I think it needs to take a leadership, proactive and pragmatic approach in communicating changes, being clear about the doctrines, being clear about what's changing.
00:50:22.052 --> 00:50:23.454
Let's talk about what's changed.
00:50:23.777 --> 00:50:25.420
Let's talk about why it's changing.
00:50:25.900 --> 00:50:29.065
If we know something for a fact, based on fact, fine, let's say it.
00:50:29.527 --> 00:50:34.355
If we say something and we think it's a fact or we think it's correct, let's say it, but let's provide context.
00:50:34.675 --> 00:50:37.619
And if we don't know something, let's say that.
00:50:38.121 --> 00:50:41.365
If we don't know the geography of the Book of Mormon, we just don't know.
00:50:41.385 --> 00:50:56.942
And if we don't know the history, if we're changing, we said months ago, we heard of evidence or rumors or maybe a little bit more than rumors, that the church is moving away from the atrocity of the Book of Mormon.
00:50:56.961 --> 00:50:58.344
Do you remember that conversation?
00:50:58.364 --> 00:50:59.005
We're going back a bit.
00:51:00.007 --> 00:51:02.110
We've referenced that.
00:51:02.389 --> 00:51:08.119
And so the church, understandably, is moving away from the Book of Mormon being an historical document.
00:51:08.139 --> 00:51:12.505
I think Elder Bednar said, don't look at it as an historical document, as a past.
00:51:12.885 --> 00:51:15.449
Look at it as a spiritual document for the future.
00:51:15.731 --> 00:51:17.853
I'm paraphrasing there, Elder Bednar.
00:51:18.114 --> 00:51:19.114
pretty much said that.
00:51:19.856 --> 00:51:22.079
So yeah, let's make the changes.
00:51:22.119 --> 00:51:23.041
Let's make the improvements.
00:51:23.081 --> 00:51:24.543
Let's say that we're going to make them.
00:51:24.583 --> 00:51:25.985
Let's not hide the changes.
00:51:26.545 --> 00:51:28.166
Let's talk about it openly.
00:51:28.206 --> 00:51:33.835
And I think that creates good dialogue and it improves spiritual health.
00:51:34.516 --> 00:51:35.858
Let's talk about these things.
00:51:37.039 --> 00:51:38.862
And it's okay not to have all the answers.
00:51:39.617 --> 00:51:41.119
It's okay not to be perfect.
00:51:41.719 --> 00:51:44.882
In fact, I like the fact that the church isn't perfect.
00:51:45.324 --> 00:51:49.447
I like the fact that the church doesn't have all the answers because to me, that's like an adventure.
00:51:49.768 --> 00:51:50.608
Well, let's explore.
00:51:51.188 --> 00:51:52.309
Let's go find it out together.
00:51:52.710 --> 00:51:57.054
So the answers of how to do this is obvious in my mind.
00:51:57.795 --> 00:52:00.597
We've talked about this a lot on the podcast, but that's the approach.
00:52:01.559 --> 00:52:06.364
And will the church change in terms of being more open, transparent about future changes?
00:52:06.384 --> 00:52:07.125
I don't know.
00:52:08.025 --> 00:52:10.829
But The church is changing slowly.
00:52:11.530 --> 00:52:13.554
I think it's changing for the better overall.
00:52:14.394 --> 00:52:37.469
And I think, just to conclude my responses here, I think individuals who hold teachings that the church no longer supports, the church has a responsibility to deal with that and the members have a responsibility to bring themselves up to date on facts based on what the church's positions are and doctrines are.
00:52:37.730 --> 00:52:39.030
in 2024?
00:52:39.092 --> 00:52:39.512
Well,
00:52:41.954 --> 00:52:43.836
that's a good answer to the question.
00:52:44.137 --> 00:52:48.822
You raised a couple of things that had me thinking about my own experience.
00:52:49.603 --> 00:53:06.442
This idea, for instance, that sexual sin is second only to murder and seriousness comes from the Book of Mormon and Alma's instruction to Corianton, is that his name?
00:53:07.010 --> 00:53:07.911
Yep, Corianton.
00:53:08.373 --> 00:53:09.494
Off the top of my head.
00:53:12.420 --> 00:53:26.789
If you look at that actual scripture and that actual story, because a lot of these changes, for instance, the changes about Book of Mormon geography, come as a result not necessarily even of revelation, but of better scholarship.
00:53:27.266 --> 00:53:41.298
I mean, if you read through the Book of Mormon and you read about how geography is dealt with in the Book of Mormon, it becomes very clear that the Book of Mormon geographical footprint, and if you move away from historicity altogether, that becomes another issue.
00:53:41.338 --> 00:53:57.074
But if you're trying to actually set the Book of Mormon events in a real-world place and time, then you have to recognize that the geographical footprint is much smaller than the entire Western Hemisphere.
00:53:58.114 --> 00:54:01.478
or at least the entire North and South American continent.
00:54:02.699 --> 00:54:04.561
But that's the result of better scholarship.
00:54:04.641 --> 00:54:22.820
And if you go and you read the Corianton story, it talks about, it's not just that he went off with the harlot Isabel, it's that he did so while he was a missionary and that his example was detrimental and was driving people out of the church.
00:54:23.862 --> 00:54:26.545
And when he says, know ye not, my son, that this is...
00:54:27.233 --> 00:54:28.916
you know, second only to murder.
00:54:29.717 --> 00:54:32.179
I'm paraphrasing because I can't remember the exact quote.
00:54:33.099 --> 00:54:43.371
But he's talking about that after he says what he's doing is setting such a negative example that he is destroying the faith of church members.
00:54:44.251 --> 00:54:49.237
The sexual sin is really sort of a small component of that.
00:54:49.277 --> 00:54:51.800
It's the destruction.
00:54:51.840 --> 00:54:56.806
It's essentially the murder of people's spiritual lives.
00:54:57.793 --> 00:55:00.056
And that makes a whole lot more sense.
00:55:00.217 --> 00:55:20.878
But like you, or I'm assuming like you, you joined the church at 16, so you may not have had this, but I keep coming back to the one teaching that was really destructive to me, which was the Two Young Men Only pamphlet by Elder Boyd K.
00:55:20.918 --> 00:55:23.702
Packer and the Little Factory Talk.
00:55:24.545 --> 00:55:31.255
I don't want to get too extensive into that, but that really messed up my entire adolescence.
00:55:31.476 --> 00:56:13.304
00:56:13.945 --> 00:56:23.644
So much so that the little factory talk, the two young men only pamphlet was taken from a conference talk given by Boyd K.
00:56:23.684 --> 00:56:25.108
Packer in October of 1976.
00:56:25.329 --> 00:56:34.489
And if you go to the church's website and you review the conference talks from October of 1976, it's as if Boyd K.
00:56:34.530 --> 00:56:36.074
Packer just didn't speak at that conference.
00:56:36.673 --> 00:56:41.800
because that conference talk has just been quietly taken off the church's website because the church is so embarrassed by it.
00:56:41.820 --> 00:56:43.384
The church no longer prints the pamphlet.
00:56:43.943 --> 00:56:47.710
The church no longer hosts that material on its website.
00:56:48.670 --> 00:56:56.081
Somebody's told me you can actually, if you go and try to find the video of it, the video is still there, but the text has been removed.
00:56:56.141 --> 00:56:57.864
You really have to dig to find it.
00:56:59.025 --> 00:57:04.293
And the specific handbook of instructions, it does not say...
00:57:05.025 --> 00:57:06.427
There's nothing wrong with masturbation.
00:57:06.467 --> 00:57:07.708
Masturbation is fine.
00:57:08.730 --> 00:57:13.777
But what it does say is there is no ecclesiastical consequence.
00:57:14.416 --> 00:57:15.998
There should be no probation.
00:57:16.018 --> 00:57:27.213
There should be no church discipline should be taken for people who engage in masturbation.
00:57:28.715 --> 00:57:33.000
And I have two friends.
00:57:35.106 --> 00:57:53.556
who are bishops, who have talked to me about this, and one talked about being in a bishop's training session where the general authority president, and I can get the name of the general authority if I contact this bishop friend, he said, do not deny someone a temple recommend.
00:57:54.137 --> 00:57:56.260
Do not tell someone they can't go on a mission.
00:57:56.942 --> 00:57:58.405
Do not deny the sacrament.
00:57:59.527 --> 00:58:01.369
Take no action whatsoever.
00:58:01.858 --> 00:58:05.362
to somebody who comes to you and confesses that they've masturbated.
00:58:05.402 --> 00:58:31.282
And, you know, all throughout my adolescence, you know, and I've told that story about John Huntsman probably far too many times, but I know stories of people who had to wait a year to go on their mission until they conquered their habit of masturbation because this was just such a grievous sin, and now quietly it isn't anymore.
00:58:32.097 --> 00:58:33.719
I mean, the church doesn't encourage it.
00:58:34.661 --> 00:58:36.202
The church doesn't celebrate it.
00:58:37.543 --> 00:58:44.451
The church doesn't say it's okay, which, I mean, it'd be nice if they just said it's okay.
00:58:45.190 --> 00:58:53.599
All they say is, don't take any action, which is essentially the equivalent of saying it's okay, but they're not willing to say.
00:58:53.619 --> 00:58:57.364
So this is the problem.
00:58:59.565 --> 00:58:59.646
Yeah.
00:59:00.322 --> 00:59:19.507
When you talk about the thread through this podcast that the church needs to be more transparent, I think my sort of mission, if there is one, the church also not only has to be transparent, the church has to admit to being fallible.
00:59:20.166 --> 00:59:25.373
The church has to admit to the reality that there have been times when we have been wronged.
00:59:25.889 --> 00:59:32.119
Admitting that there are times when you are wrong is not the same thing as admitting that you are always wrong.
00:59:33.101 --> 00:59:38.708
Because everybody can be wrong and has been wrong on occasions.
00:59:38.909 --> 00:59:43.496
Everybody is individuals and speaking under the church collectively and not individually.
00:59:43.536 --> 00:59:46.842
The church, I think, has been far more right...
00:59:47.713 --> 01:00:04.614
in terms of preaching the principles of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and preaching how to live more Christ-like lives and how to draw closer to Christ, I think the church has been far more right than it has been wrong.
01:00:05.295 --> 01:00:25.833
I don't think admitting that there have been times when we have gotten it wrong is the same thing as admitting that the entire church is a completely flawed and failed institution, and it's always been wrong, which seems to be the direction where some people who leave the church think we ought to go, or that's where they've gone.
01:00:25.873 --> 01:00:31.300
They've essentially said nothing the church has done is right, but you've left the church and you recognize that's not true.
01:00:31.320 --> 01:00:49.081
And I think admitting that there have been times when we have been wrong does not negate all of the rightness, does not negate all of the goodness, What it does is tell the truth and build trust.
01:00:49.862 --> 01:00:54.947
If you could admit that you have been wrong, you build trust in this institution.
01:00:55.128 --> 01:01:10.505
And I think the unwillingness to do that and the fact that these changes are made quietly without any acknowledgement that anything has changed or that anything was wrong that needed to be changed, because that's why I think they're quiet.
01:01:11.297 --> 01:01:16.523
is because when you admit you've changed, you admit that what you were doing before that was wrong.
01:01:17.786 --> 01:01:21.489
And it's just maddening.
01:01:21.530 --> 01:01:35.867
The best example of that, I think, is the 2015 policy of exclusion, which was, we were told by President Nelson that it was a revelation that the children of gay parents can't be baptized.
01:01:36.568 --> 01:01:42.409
And then three and a half years later, President Oaks comes out and says it's a revelation that they can be baptized.
01:01:43.291 --> 01:01:46.353
Well, okay, well, which revelation was right?
01:01:46.494 --> 01:01:48.295
Because they can't both be right.
01:01:49.297 --> 01:01:51.639
They're diametrically opposed to each other.
01:01:52.119 --> 01:01:54.902
Why can't you just admit we got it wrong?
01:01:55.623 --> 01:01:58.945
We got it wrong in 2015, and we fixed it in 2019.
01:01:59.266 --> 01:02:02.168
There's nothing wrong with that.
01:02:02.190 --> 01:02:06.494
There's nothing wrong with fixing error.
01:02:06.978 --> 01:02:16.190
And I think that the obstacle to doing that is when you frame everything as revelation, you act like God is standing there.
01:02:16.210 --> 01:02:19.757
I mean, last week, Marcus talked about the prophet.
01:02:20.177 --> 01:02:22.621
Christ is always standing there whispering in his ear.
01:02:22.681 --> 01:02:34.197
And the idea that prophets can't ever be wrong because Jesus is in constant communication with them in the same way that I'm in communication with you.
01:02:35.137 --> 01:02:36.760
And I don't believe that.
01:02:37.342 --> 01:02:38.304
I used to believe that.
01:02:38.463 --> 01:02:44.996
I don't believe that prophets experience God any differently than the rest of us do.
01:02:45.016 --> 01:02:51.769
I think they have a calling that requires them to seek out greater inspiration and revelation.
01:02:52.510 --> 01:02:58.121
But I don't think Jesus physically appears in first presidency meetings.
01:02:58.786 --> 01:03:04.050
I think that they struggle to reach the divine in the same way the rest of us do.
01:03:04.170 --> 01:03:08.454
And they have a greater responsibility, I think, than we do because their stewardship is greater.
01:03:09.356 --> 01:03:24.891
But they are also capable of misinterpreting or missing the message or getting a message and applying it in ways where their own biases and their own weaknesses come into play.
01:03:25.070 --> 01:03:27.833
That's what the mortal experience is about.
01:03:28.449 --> 01:03:39.648
I mean, that's the fundamental idea of mortality is that we get it wrong and we have to have a savior because we can't get there by ourselves because we get it wrong.
01:03:40.228 --> 01:03:41.552
And there's nothing wrong with that.
01:03:41.592 --> 01:03:43.976
We teach that individually.
01:03:44.016 --> 01:03:45.137
We recognize that.
01:03:45.217 --> 01:03:52.228
But institutionally, we pretend that the institution is exempt from that, that the institution never gets it wrong.
01:03:52.289 --> 01:03:54.934
And yeah, here are some changes, but they're not really changes.
01:03:55.873 --> 01:03:58.376
You see this in the temple.
01:03:58.396 --> 01:04:02.282
I remember the big temple changes.
01:04:02.302 --> 01:04:15.476
I think the temple ceremony has changed three times since President Nelson has become president of the church, which is three out of four of the times that it's changed in my lifetime.
01:04:15.496 --> 01:04:22.925
In 1990, you saw the dropping of the penalties as well as a few other changes, but that was a really, really big change.
01:04:23.681 --> 01:04:36.775
And then the temple ceremony was unchanged up until 20, I think 20, either 2020 or 2021, because they changed either right before or right after the pandemic.
01:04:36.876 --> 01:04:37.918
I can't remember the date.
01:04:38.938 --> 01:04:46.786
But in those changes, when I first went, we talked about it on this podcast.
01:04:48.108 --> 01:04:52.733
So it would have probably been after the pandemic because we began this podcast earlier.
01:04:52.833 --> 01:04:53.695
after the pandemic.
01:04:54.516 --> 01:05:21.905
But at the very beginning of the temple ceremony, the new temple ceremony, there was an announcement by the first presidency, or they read a letter by the first presidency, that said, do not discuss these changes and do not even mention that there have been changes.
01:05:22.530 --> 01:05:33.059
I need to actually get the wording, but it wasn't just enough to say, don't discuss the content of the changes, but don't discuss that there have been changes at all.
01:05:34.280 --> 01:05:36.643
And I just thought, why not?
01:05:37.483 --> 01:05:38.144
Why not?
01:05:38.445 --> 01:05:39.686
That doesn't make any sense.
01:05:42.148 --> 01:05:45.692
Do you think nobody's going to notice that these have been changes?
01:05:47.333 --> 01:05:52.157
What is accomplished by not even acknowledging the reality that change has taken place?
01:05:53.282 --> 01:06:09.398
So this is, I think, just as long as we continue to perpetuate the idea that we don't change, then we're going to have members of the church believing things that we no longer teach.
01:06:10.146 --> 01:06:12.768
because they've got no incentive to change them.
01:06:12.789 --> 01:06:16.273
They've never been told that they have to change, and they've been told the church hasn't changed.
01:06:16.914 --> 01:06:24.143
So what's to prevent them from thinking that all black people volunteered before this life to come and be discriminated against?
01:06:24.864 --> 01:06:33.394
What's to prevent them from teaching that you have to believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old and was completely covered by water as a baptism?
01:06:34.114 --> 01:06:43.465
What's to prevent them from believing that If they activate their little factory, they are very close to, if not actually committing a sin next to murder.
01:06:44.567 --> 01:06:57.088
What's to prevent them from teaching or believing all of those things if the church does not explicitly come out and say, hey, that stuff we taught you 50 years ago, we don't teach that anymore because it was wrong.
01:06:57.507 --> 01:07:03.277
We teach this now because it more accurately reflects the light and knowledge that we have received.
01:07:03.842 --> 01:07:08.186
If we don't do that, we're going to continue to have the dinosaurs in the church.
01:07:08.646 --> 01:07:12.851
Although the dinosaurs in the church are people who don't believe there were dinosaurs.
01:07:13.452 --> 01:07:15.335
So there's a problem with that, I guess.
01:07:15.974 --> 01:07:27.547
But we're going to continue to have this problem unless not only we're transparent, but we're also accountable for our errors and our missteps and our mistakes.
01:07:28.148 --> 01:07:32.554
Do you think there is any way to be transparent without also being accountable?
01:07:33.346 --> 01:07:37.070
Don't you think that that's an essential part of that process?
01:07:38.052 --> 01:07:45.222
The very principle of transparency, in my mind, is to demonstrate that you want to be accountable.
01:07:46.545 --> 01:07:48.688
That they say, hey, look, here's all the information.
01:07:49.028 --> 01:07:49.550
We know this.
01:07:49.710 --> 01:07:50.471
We think we know this.
01:07:50.590 --> 01:07:51.271
We don't know this.
01:07:51.291 --> 01:07:53.175
These have changed.
01:07:53.255 --> 01:07:54.097
This is the same.
01:07:54.697 --> 01:07:55.778
We're trying to work through it.
01:07:55.818 --> 01:07:56.880
That's transparency.
01:07:57.001 --> 01:07:58.603
And open up the books, right?
01:07:59.003 --> 01:07:59.284
Everything.
01:08:00.346 --> 01:08:02.068
Because you have integrity.
01:08:02.088 --> 01:08:03.110
You want to be accountable.
01:08:03.650 --> 01:08:14.740
The church has a distinct and unique and significant responsibility to be transparent, to hold itself accountable, or other organizations and people to hold it accountable for sure.
01:08:15.101 --> 01:08:16.863
Independent accountability, I think, is really important.
01:08:17.384 --> 01:08:30.497
But also to teach or to communicate to the members very clearly, very concisely, very openly, transparently, where the changes have happened and why the changes have taken place.
01:08:31.137 --> 01:08:31.759
I'll give you an example.
01:08:31.838 --> 01:08:33.539
I do a lot of project change management.
01:08:34.520 --> 01:08:39.246
And when you have to change the project, it's called a change order.
01:08:39.265 --> 01:08:43.409
And the change order is referenced in the contract.
01:08:44.371 --> 01:08:56.242
There's an agreement language in the contract that if there's a change to the project, there's a certain protocol and certain measures and certain processes you follow to change the project.
01:08:57.422 --> 01:09:00.025
And that is called a project change order.
01:09:00.962 --> 01:09:02.423
or a change order notification.
01:09:02.805 --> 01:09:03.845
And it's in the contract.
01:09:04.287 --> 01:09:05.127
The client knows it.
01:09:05.809 --> 01:09:08.332
And he knows that at some point, the project is going to change.
01:09:09.212 --> 01:09:22.310
And the deal is, the rule is that you communicate the change, what the change is, and why you're making the changes, and what the cost is, and what the impact on the project schedule is, and the impact on the overall project.
01:09:22.490 --> 01:09:23.072
That's business.
01:09:23.512 --> 01:09:24.394
That's project management.
01:09:25.395 --> 01:09:25.876
It's open.
01:09:25.916 --> 01:09:26.537
It's transparent.
01:09:26.697 --> 01:09:27.158
It works.
01:09:27.521 --> 01:09:28.823
When it's followed, it works.
01:09:29.463 --> 01:09:36.310
The church has a responsibility to bring its members across every demographic up to date on the changes.
01:09:37.110 --> 01:09:40.795
And it doesn't take that responsibility as seriously as it should.
01:09:41.135 --> 01:09:46.159
Likewise, Jim, the responsibility is not solely rests with the church.
01:09:46.659 --> 01:09:55.068
Members of the church have a responsibility to research and to study and to get up to speed and up to date on the changes the church is making.
01:09:55.708 --> 01:09:56.609
So the church...
01:09:57.057 --> 01:10:13.823
does an okay job, or even a good job at times, and still the members don't get up to speed, and that's down to the members, we can't put that dangerous, toxic thinking that still exists within the church entirely on the church.
01:10:14.765 --> 01:10:16.006
Not completely, in my mind.
01:10:16.046 --> 01:10:25.381
The responsibility is with us also to study and to research, and it's a collective, shared responsibility.
01:10:26.818 --> 01:10:38.671
I think the problem the church has got is that there's still a group of people in the church that hold on to these very dangerous doctrines, and they've not moved on.
01:10:38.690 --> 01:10:42.715
And in fact, those individuals are holding the church back.
01:10:43.896 --> 01:10:58.511
So it's in the church's interest to bring everyone up to date on what's happening and why it's happening and all these changes, like the changes to the Book of Mormon introduction, which I think is in part, very positive.
01:10:58.692 --> 01:11:00.052
And I've talked about that earlier.
01:11:01.555 --> 01:11:15.847
But when you still have these individuals that perpetuate and teach these what I think are doctrines that make me very uncomfortable, that's the truth, then I think that's a problem.
01:11:16.588 --> 01:11:28.399
The other thing I want to highlight, which has been a bit of an epiphany for me, listening to you, and we haven't talked about this, and I've not heard this on any of the podcasts.
01:11:28.760 --> 01:11:31.363
It might be out there, but I don't think it is.
01:11:32.465 --> 01:11:38.372
In front of you and I right now, we have a copy of the 1981 edition of the Book of Mormon.
01:11:39.432 --> 01:11:58.448
I was taught, as you was taught, that that book, which I'm holding up now, the original book of my mission, it is the original, by the way, it's not any of the book I'm holding up, that that book in its entirety is a canon of scripture and every word in the book I was taught is scripture.
01:12:00.350 --> 01:12:03.015
And that scripture, Elder Wilkes, does not change.
01:12:03.896 --> 01:12:04.837
Here I am holding the book up.
01:12:05.038 --> 01:12:06.440
It does not change, ever.
01:12:07.762 --> 01:12:09.605
It will always be the same.
01:12:09.706 --> 01:12:10.546
God doesn't change.
01:12:10.606 --> 01:12:12.149
He's the same yesterday, today, and forever.
01:12:12.689 --> 01:12:15.014
And the Holy Scriptures do not change.
01:12:16.395 --> 01:12:19.000
That's what I was taught, and that's what I taught as a missionary.
01:12:20.122 --> 01:12:23.587
And they also said that the scripture doesn't change.
01:12:24.548 --> 01:12:25.210
Because if it did...
01:12:26.242 --> 01:12:43.601
We'd have the situation in the dark ages where these different churches, as I taught, I was taught, and what I taught as a missionary, would take little pieces of the gospel and fill in the rest with their own ideas, quoting myself from a missionary, and they would make up their own religion.
01:12:44.221 --> 01:12:50.449
They'd have some elements of truth, some elements of the original church, but it wasn't the fullness of the gospel.
01:12:50.489 --> 01:12:53.033
It wasn't entirety, and it was man-made stuff.
01:12:53.252 --> 01:12:57.917
And that's what happens We were taught when we change Scripture, it becomes man-made.
01:12:58.438 --> 01:12:59.498
We don't change Scripture.
01:12:59.618 --> 01:13:00.819
God changes Scripture.
01:13:01.199 --> 01:13:02.240
Here's the epiphany.
01:13:03.943 --> 01:13:09.047
Keeping in mind what I've just said, that the church doesn't change Scripture, or that's been the doctrine, the teaching.
01:13:09.768 --> 01:13:17.595
And remember, the introduction in the 1981 edition of the Book of Mormon, and I think it's one of the editions since, is Scripture.
01:13:18.856 --> 01:13:19.837
The introduction of Scripture.
01:13:20.238 --> 01:13:23.902
When a prophet speaks by the power of the Holy Ghost, that's Scripture.
01:13:24.354 --> 01:13:25.055
That's what I was taught.
01:13:25.636 --> 01:13:28.300
The Book of Mormon, from front to end, is Scripture.
01:13:28.319 --> 01:13:29.220
I want to be clear about that.
01:13:29.582 --> 01:13:42.502
But here we have what I think is a significant moment in the church that just hit me on this podcast, where you've now got a new version of the Book of Mormon introduction.
01:13:43.323 --> 01:14:03.978
They've changed almost entirely and missed out key points, key references to Joseph Smith and The plates and being comparable with the Bible and being a history of the dealings with the Lord's people in the Americas.
01:14:04.338 --> 01:14:05.801
That's not in the new version.
01:14:06.180 --> 01:14:06.881
So here's my point.
01:14:07.844 --> 01:14:16.216
The church, I think this is a, in my mind now, a seismic shift where the church has actually changed something that is scriptural.
01:14:16.577 --> 01:14:17.177
They've changed it.
01:14:17.958 --> 01:14:19.461
Whether it's an app or not, they've changed it.
01:14:19.501 --> 01:14:20.283
They've got a version of it.
01:14:21.224 --> 01:14:22.426
To me, it's an improvement.
01:14:23.489 --> 01:14:29.617
I think if I was in the church years ago when I was very fixed in my thinking, I could see this as problematic.
01:14:29.896 --> 01:14:31.198
Now, I don't.
01:14:31.798 --> 01:14:34.242
I see this as overall a positive thing.
01:14:34.282 --> 01:14:46.015
And the question in my mind now, is this evidence, is this a precursor to the church changing actual scripture in the scripture, references in the scriptures?
01:14:46.555 --> 01:14:54.344
It has done with White and Delightsome, which is in this book, by the way, the 1981, because I've read it, says white and delightsome.
01:14:54.724 --> 01:14:55.284
That's what it says.
01:14:55.324 --> 01:14:59.970
In the previous, in the more recent editions, it says pure and delightsome.
01:15:00.452 --> 01:15:03.336
So it has changed words in the scripture.
01:15:03.815 --> 01:15:08.402
You know, in the introduction, it's talked about the principal ancestors to amongst the ancestors.
01:15:08.643 --> 01:15:09.543
That's very significant.
01:15:10.145 --> 01:15:20.878
In my mind now, I think this is a very strategic move on the church where it could then use this as an example in future, say, look, we've changed this, we've changed that.
01:15:20.939 --> 01:15:28.252
And by the way, back in 2024, eight, nine, ten years ago, we gave a friendly aversion to the introduction to the Book of Mormon.
01:15:28.472 --> 01:15:29.875
And we had a great response from that.
01:15:30.255 --> 01:15:32.018
And this is why we're making these changes here.
01:15:32.398 --> 01:15:34.199
I think it's a very smart move on the part of the church.
01:15:34.881 --> 01:15:38.565
I think they're trying to change, trying to connect with that different demographic.
01:15:39.106 --> 01:15:46.235
And whether they know it or not, and I think they do, obviously, the prophets, they have changed Scripture.
01:15:47.597 --> 01:15:48.920
It's a different version.
01:15:49.541 --> 01:15:50.261
I think it's good.
01:15:51.010 --> 01:15:53.634
Whether other people agree with me or not, I don't know.
01:15:54.414 --> 01:16:04.770
But is this a prelude or a precursor to changing other things or taking other things in the Book of Mormon and making a version of it and kind of diluting it?
01:16:05.390 --> 01:16:06.112
I think so.
01:16:06.512 --> 01:16:07.574
I think it's a smart move.
01:16:08.215 --> 01:16:29.990
And I think the church is moving away from areas where it doesn't have that certainty anymore, going back to my earlier point, is wants to spend more time in areas that are safer, that it has confidence in and away from things that it can be disproven.
01:16:30.953 --> 01:16:33.296
And that, I can understand why it would do that.
01:16:33.778 --> 01:16:36.141
How it does that, we can disagree or agree with.
01:16:36.762 --> 01:16:41.470
Why it's doing it, I think it's, there's a number of very obvious reasons why it's doing that.
01:16:41.832 --> 01:16:45.198
So there will be my final remarks on that.
01:16:46.369 --> 01:16:48.113
Well, I appreciate that very much.
01:16:48.613 --> 01:16:50.355
And I agree with you.
01:16:50.376 --> 01:17:04.095
I don't see the Book of Mormon introduction change as an actual change in Scripture in the same way that White and Delightsome was a change in Scripture and the change of the actual text of the Book of Mormon.
01:17:04.756 --> 01:17:15.734
But I do see your idea that we're sort of softening up the membership to some degree for greater changes that may come.
01:17:16.449 --> 01:17:23.497
Joseph Smith edited the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants throughout his life.
01:17:23.737 --> 01:17:33.686
There were significant changes in text of Scripture that was written in the first person as if Jesus Christ said them himself.
01:17:33.967 --> 01:17:37.831
And yet Joseph Smith went in and edited those throughout his life.
01:17:38.112 --> 01:17:54.376
And that doesn't bother me because I recognize that the language of Scripture is an attempt to close the revelation in language, but that the communication does not come in a sort of teletype.
01:17:54.877 --> 01:17:56.359
The words aren't the revelation.
01:17:56.399 --> 01:17:58.443
The words are a description of the revelation.
01:17:58.542 --> 01:18:03.930
And so it doesn't bother me if the words change to better reflect the underlying revelation.
01:18:03.990 --> 01:18:06.454
But I think that's an entirely different discussion.
01:18:07.136 --> 01:18:10.600
I think the principle that you're outlining here is absolutely sound.
01:18:11.394 --> 01:18:15.018
And we need to recognize that and we need to embrace it.
01:18:15.958 --> 01:18:27.050
And for the church to grow and for the church to thrive, the church also has to take accountability and accept changes.
01:18:27.189 --> 01:18:28.331
And you are absolutely right.
01:18:28.411 --> 01:18:29.693
It's not all on the church.
01:18:29.953 --> 01:18:30.974
It's also on us.
01:18:31.875 --> 01:18:42.890
Last week, we were pointing out factual evidence of change that our good friend rejected out of hand.
01:18:44.152 --> 01:18:57.167
And when the church actually demonstrates that change when things are demonstrably different, if we refuse to accept it, that's on us.
01:18:58.168 --> 01:19:06.399
And I think the church is, I think, scared of what members who cling to these outdated ideas will do.
01:19:06.418 --> 01:19:08.542
I think they're scared of driving them away.
01:19:09.377 --> 01:19:23.578
You know, Richard Bushman at one point, when he talked about the dominant narrative of the church is not true, he said a phrase, something along the lines of, to protect the grandmas, we're losing the future.
01:19:24.859 --> 01:19:37.807
You know, to protect these people, to be able to hold on to their outdated and sometimes bigoted ideas, We are losing the rising generation who has no patience for such things.
01:19:38.769 --> 01:19:51.604
And so the only way I think that we can go forward is to embrace change, embrace fallibility, and embrace our accountability and be transparent.
01:19:51.886 --> 01:19:56.150
So I think we're on the same page, and I very much appreciate your thoughts here.
01:19:56.251 --> 01:20:01.478
And we've rambled on here a bit, but I think this has been a wonderful discussion.
