00:00:09.199 --> 00:00:14.320
Hello everybody, it's Richard Ramos and welcome to the Parent Whisperer Podcast.
00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:15.919
Thank you for joining me.
00:00:16.160 --> 00:00:22.239
Today I want to talk about community leadership and human flourishing.
00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:24.640
And what is human flourishing?
00:00:24.800 --> 00:00:28.640
Number one, and number two, how do you produce it?
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:30.960
How can we increase it?
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:33.439
So let me start with a question.
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:40.799
A lot of cities and communities are dealing with youth violence and all kinds of different issues.
00:00:41.119 --> 00:00:45.039
And the question is always what to do about it, how to go about it.
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:51.359
So I want to talk about that with this idea about human flourishing.
00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:54.880
So if you were the mayor, let me give you a hypothetical.
00:00:55.119 --> 00:01:10.879
If you were the mayor of a city and you were given a mandate by the city council that they wanted you to fix, clean up, solve the problem of youth violence, rebellious youth, things like that.
00:01:11.280 --> 00:01:23.519
And they wanted at the end of your term as mayor, one or two terms, whatever it would be, that the community would be safer and healthier.
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:25.840
A safe and healthy community.
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:30.079
And on top of that, they gave you an unlimited budget.
00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:38.560
And so now you're in control, you're calling the shots, it's going to be your strategy and your priorities.
00:01:38.879 --> 00:01:40.239
What would you do?
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:42.799
What would you invest in?
00:01:42.959 --> 00:01:45.439
Where would your focus and attention be?
00:01:46.000 --> 00:02:06.239
How would you go about resolving, solving, dealing with, uh, addressing youth rebellion, youth, violence, and the kinds of things that parents and all communities are always concerned about.
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:12.479
And that particular topic, because that's been my focus for many years.
00:02:12.719 --> 00:02:21.280
And so I want to just continue to talk about that and share with you what I think and what I how to best go about it.
00:02:21.439 --> 00:02:33.759
Now, what I've learned over 35 plus years of the work that I've been doing is number one, that people, we're talking about human beings, but people I find are in the wrong position.
00:02:34.319 --> 00:02:37.439
So I like to use sports metaphors to explain that.
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:49.439
In other words, let's say that you had a team and you had a guy who should be a lineman trying to be the quarterback, and you have a guy who's the quarterback trying to be a lineman.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:03:05.360
You have a linebacker trying to play safety, or in baseball, you have a catcher who's trying to be the pitcher, or in basketball, you have the center who is usually seven feet tall trying to be the point guard.
00:03:05.599 --> 00:03:08.960
In other words, they're out of position.
00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:18.159
That is not the best position for them to play, and it's not in the best interest of the whole team.
00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:20.400
So I find that happens a lot.
00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:29.360
People are in the wrong position, or another way of putting this is that people are acting out the wrong script.
00:03:29.840 --> 00:03:51.039
Now, we all know actors uh have scripts, and some of them are very good at it, and they are doing the script that they are given by the director so that we actually believe that they're that character they're playing, they're a doctor, they're a lawyer, they're a cop or a detective or some something like that.
00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:56.479
And they're so good at it, they're so convincing, in other words, which is what good acting is.
00:03:56.719 --> 00:04:05.680
And again, I find a lot of people are acting out the wrong script for their life, the wrong purpose.
00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:10.080
They're not in their purpose and therefore they're not in their full potential.
00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:15.439
And now, and that doesn't even mean that if they are acting out the wrong script that they're not good at it.
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:18.639
Some of some people are good at it, but it's the wrong one.
00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:32.639
And what I'm talking about is a kid who's joining a gang and he's violent and he's angry or committing other things that young people shouldn't be doing, but maybe he's very good at it.
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:36.560
But it's certainly not why he was born or she was born.
00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:40.480
That's not their purpose on earth, I don't believe.
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:46.240
And so, again, people are out of position, people are acting out the wrong script.
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:57.199
And the third thing about this is that if we want safer and healthy communities, we need better citizens.
00:04:57.439 --> 00:05:02.800
That's really what it comes down to, and that's what I mean by human flourishing.
00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:08.720
We need, if we want better communities, if we want safer communities, we need better citizens.
00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:14.240
Now, here's the question where do the citizens of the community come from?
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:17.920
You could even ask the question, what is the community?
00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:21.360
If you want a safer and healthier community, what is the community?
00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:30.160
The community is not the buildings, it's not the uh parks, pools, playgrounds, it's not those things.
00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:35.680
The community may is made up of people.
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:51.279
The citizens are the people, and so in parents on a mission, I always ask this question, uh, parents, therefore, what kind of citizen are we sending into the community every day?
00:05:51.600 --> 00:05:54.079
Because we could say, these are my kids.
00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:56.160
I'm raising my kids.
00:05:56.399 --> 00:06:09.360
Yeah, you're raising your kids, but you are also raising citizens of the community that ultimately become the ones who are making the citizen, the community go.
00:06:09.519 --> 00:06:26.079
Whether that's they become employees, they become the employers, they become the political leaders, they become the teachers, the superintendents, they become the plumbers, the people that come and fix things, they become the community.
00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:33.199
And so we were talking about safer communities, healthier communities.
00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:44.240
I say, therefore, we need human beings that are flourishing, okay, and this is why I parents are so important.
00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:54.000
But if parents are failing in their job, then that's why the role of leadership becomes so important.
00:06:54.959 --> 00:07:18.959
Because as a community leader, and in this case, I talked about the mayor, but of course, the mayor is not the only community leader, but you're like the you're the leader of the leaders, you're putting forth a strategy, you're investing money, you're calling the shots for what is the priority to deal with this this problem.
00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:28.079
So I'll get to the parents because that really to me is where the focus needs to be.
00:07:28.319 --> 00:07:31.839
But why community leadership is so important?
00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:38.079
Because our role then becomes that we need to reclaim those people's lives.
00:07:38.399 --> 00:07:48.079
Reclaim them from that gang life, that drug life, that alcohol abuse life, that violent life, that dropping out of school life, or whatever it is.
00:07:48.399 --> 00:07:51.839
We need to reclaim them because they're out of position.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:55.279
They're acting out the wrong script.
00:07:55.519 --> 00:08:20.639
And as a community leader, then my focus becomes helping them, reclaiming them, and then restoring them to their purpose, to their real purpose, their real life, their real script, and to redeem them back out of that life of violence, out of that life of what did I say, out of rebellion.
00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:35.360
That is the role of leaders to help people back to their God-given talent, to their God-given purpose in life and why they're here in the first place.
00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:45.360
So now, before I get to the parent part of this, let me talk about this thought about community.
00:08:45.759 --> 00:08:47.279
Who is a community leader?
00:08:47.519 --> 00:08:59.840
Because people get caught up in community leader means that I have a position of authority, or that I have some kind of title, or that I have been elected to political office.
00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:07.120
I'm the boss, or I'm the CEO, or I'm a put I'm in a position of authority and power, I'm out front.
00:09:07.600 --> 00:09:11.919
No, that that is not what a community leader needs to be.
00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:31.039
You don't have to have a title, a position of authority and power or elected office in order to be a community leader that causes human flourishing, that redeems, reclaims, and restores people from that life that they were never meant to live.
00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:32.559
You don't have to be that.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:44.240
Now, to illustrate that, I told a story recently, and I want to share it here, about a young man who by the name of Aaron Stark.
00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:54.320
In 1996, he was a student at North High School in Denver, Colorado, and he had decided that he was going to be a mass shooter.
00:09:54.480 --> 00:10:01.279
He had decided he came to a place in his life where he said, you know what, I'm sick and tired of what I've been going through.
00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:06.799
And he had decided I'm going to get a gun and I'm going to take out as many people as I can.
00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:12.240
And he was trying to decide, is that going to be a school or is it going to be a mall?
00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:17.279
Because those are easy targets where there's very little security.
00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:32.399
Now, the reason he was became this way was because all his life, and he, as he tells his story, he was abused, he was neglected, he was abandoned by his drug addict parents.
00:10:32.720 --> 00:10:36.879
And his drug addict parents were always running from the cops.
00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:45.519
So he would be woken up at four o'clock in the morning to escape from the cops and move to another city, and then two days later he'd have to do it all over again.
00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:56.559
So many years of his life, from the time he was very young, he was moving all over the country trying to escape and running from while his parents running from cops.
00:10:56.960 --> 00:11:03.919
So by the time he was about 14 years old, he said he had already attended 30 or 40 different schools.
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:10.639
Now the problem was every time he went to a new school, he's the new kid, and then he would be bullied.
00:11:10.960 --> 00:11:23.279
And one of the reasons he would be bullied was because he never had any clean clothes, his clothes were torn, he didn't have time for shower, so he would smell, and people would make fun of him and they would bully him.
00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:33.120
But then he also shared in his testimony that the bullying wasn't only going on at school, it was also going on at home.
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:48.240
He shares one time where when he was in junior high school, I think he said he was 14 or 15 years old, and he got into heavy metal music, rock music, and he decided that he wanted to start cutting himself.
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:50.240
And that's what he was doing.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:51.519
He was cutting himself.
00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:57.440
But one time he was cutting himself so bad that he was bleeding all over the place.
00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:01.519
And he said to himself, if I don't do something, I'm gonna die.
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:08.000
And so what he did, he found a phone book, he looked up the social services number, he called them up.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:16.799
But the problem was they didn't only bring him into the social services place, but they also called his mom and brought her in.
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:21.120
And he said that she knew exactly what to say, exactly what to do.
00:12:21.279 --> 00:12:30.480
She was a con artist and she convinced them that this was all an act, he just wanted attention and that this is something that he always does.
00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:35.120
And so they believed her and they released him with her.
00:12:35.600 --> 00:12:46.320
When they got in the car, she turned to him and said, Next time, you need to do a better job, and I'll buy the razor blades.
00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:58.799
At that point, he said his heart was ripped out of his chest, and that is when he decided, I'm done with all of this, and he wanted to get a gun the next day and go kill people.
00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:02.159
But he had a friend.
00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:16.000
He tells the story about this friend that he had lied to, he had burned, he had mistreated, but yet this guy would let him stay at his house, stay at his in actually in his shed.
00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:23.039
And the night before he was he had made up his mind he was gonna go get a gun the next day and do this shooting.
00:13:23.279 --> 00:13:25.440
His friend came into the shed.
00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:27.840
Hey man, what's up?
00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:29.039
What's happening?
00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:30.480
You hungry?
00:13:30.799 --> 00:13:32.000
You want to have a meal?
00:13:32.159 --> 00:13:35.840
How about we go in and eat inside and watch a movie?
00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:46.399
And then on top of that, his mom, this the friend's mom, she has no idea what this kid is going through.
00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:52.159
But in his honor, she baked a blueberry peach pie.
00:13:52.879 --> 00:14:11.919
And he says that they all sat down at the table, they ate dinner, they ate the pie, and it was because of those acts of kindness by this mother and her son that prevented him from committing the atrocity of going to a school or a mall and shooting all these people.
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.320
So, what is my point?
00:14:14.799 --> 00:14:24.639
My point is this how many lives did that mother and her son save that day?
00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:45.519
No title, no position of power and authority, no elected political office, and yet, because of their unconditional love and kindness that they showed this young man, saved all who knows how many lives.
00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:53.519
That, my friend, is the epitome of community leadership that causes humans to flourish.
00:14:54.159 --> 00:14:56.559
He and Aaron tells his story.
00:14:56.799 --> 00:14:58.159
It's on YouTube, you could find it.
00:14:58.320 --> 00:14:59.440
Aaron Stark.
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:02.320
He I almost became a school shooter.
00:15:02.559 --> 00:15:19.039
And then he at the end he talks about how he's found his life, he found his light, he's a father of four children, and as he was speaking that message that day or that night, his wife and one of his daughters and his friend was in the audience.
00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:26.480
See, this is what I'm talking about as far as who is a community leader.
00:15:27.120 --> 00:15:32.159
We don't have to be in a position of authority or anything like that.
00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:39.519
And again, this is why the home life, the parenting is so important.
00:15:40.960 --> 00:15:51.679
Now, community leaders, in my opinion, moving on now, I believe they need a lesson in farming.
00:15:52.720 --> 00:15:53.440
That's right.
00:15:53.600 --> 00:16:00.720
Again, if I'm the mayor and I have community leaders, let's talk about the conventional community leadership.
00:16:00.879 --> 00:16:28.559
Usually policemen, law enforcement, probation, school counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists who like to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs to kids that are that are not stable, so to speak, or having all these problems, more counselors, we need more job programs, we need, as I already mentioned, more parks and more playgrounds, more pools, more things to do for kids, more entertainment.
00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:34.960
That's usually the conventional wisdom of how we're gonna solve these problems.
00:16:35.519 --> 00:16:37.519
More police on the street.
00:16:37.840 --> 00:16:50.320
If all of those things that we've been doing for decades were the answer, we would have solved this problem a long time ago of youth violence and rebellious youth.
00:16:50.559 --> 00:16:53.279
But obviously, it is not working.
00:16:54.639 --> 00:17:02.720
And so when I say that community leaders can learn from farmers, what do I mean by that?
00:17:02.960 --> 00:17:04.319
Let's think about it.
00:17:04.559 --> 00:17:06.400
What do farmers do?
00:17:06.799 --> 00:17:21.599
First of all, they create crops, quality crops and fruit year after year, and in some cases, generation after generation, from the same field over and over again.
00:17:22.160 --> 00:17:36.079
And the thing that we need to learn from them is their focus is not on the fruit, their focus is on the roots that create and produce the fruit.
00:17:36.319 --> 00:17:37.680
That's the key.
00:17:38.319 --> 00:17:45.920
They're paying attention to the soil, they're paying attention to the watering, to the cultivation of the land.
00:17:46.720 --> 00:17:55.359
They're creating an environment that's gonna have healthy roots when they plant those seeds year after year.
00:17:56.079 --> 00:18:01.920
That's their focus on the fruit and not the roots.
00:18:02.160 --> 00:18:05.680
I'm sorry, on the roots and not the fruits.
00:18:06.400 --> 00:18:11.759
Now, that same principle or those same principles apply to human beings.
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:20.880
And this goes to what I've been doing, what parents on a mission, and parent leadership, why that is so important.
00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:27.119
Now, I mentioned that if parents weren't doing the job, that's why we need other community leaders.
00:18:27.359 --> 00:18:46.960
But again, we have community leaders that are focused on the wrong thing, they're focused on the problems that rebellious and violent youth create rather than being focused on the problems that create rebellious and violent youth.
00:18:47.359 --> 00:18:51.599
That's where the focus needs to be, and we learn that from farmers.
00:18:51.759 --> 00:18:53.839
They're not focused on the fruit.
00:18:54.079 --> 00:18:57.759
And in the metaphor, the fruit would be the good kids.
00:18:58.160 --> 00:19:02.240
They're focused on the root that produces the fruit.
00:19:02.400 --> 00:19:10.640
And I'm saying that root primarily is in the home, in the heart of human beings.
00:19:10.880 --> 00:19:32.960
And when that is paid attention to, when that environment and that soil of the heart is cultivated and cared for and nurtured correctly from the time a child is born, even before they're born, actually, in the womb, that is what causes a human flourishing, for a human being to flourish.
00:19:33.200 --> 00:19:41.359
Now, let me say, because some of you out there might be thinking, I know good parents, and or I'm a good parent, and my son and my daughter has gone off the rails.
00:19:41.680 --> 00:19:49.920
Okay, it's true that you could have great parents and this the child or children don't always turn out great.
00:19:50.079 --> 00:19:51.200
That could be true.
00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:53.599
And the opposite is true.
00:19:53.920 --> 00:19:57.920
You could be the worst parent in the world, and your kids turn out great.
00:19:58.160 --> 00:20:00.079
But those are exceptions to the rule.
00:20:00.160 --> 00:20:11.200
In general, again, getting back to the farming metaphor, you have to take care of the environment, you have to focus on the roots to produce the fruits.
00:20:11.920 --> 00:20:31.119
I read something many years ago that really got me focused on the roots, where Henry David Thoreau said this for every thousand men that are striking at the leaves of evil, one is striking at the root.
00:20:32.079 --> 00:20:39.039
Now, we need programs and leaders striking at the leaves of evil through programs.
00:20:39.359 --> 00:20:41.440
That's why programs are needed.
00:20:41.839 --> 00:20:44.880
And you're dealing with the symptoms of problems.
00:20:45.279 --> 00:20:48.720
But we know what happens if you only deal with the symptoms.
00:20:49.119 --> 00:20:55.279
We got to get to the root of the problem, and that's what I have been trying to do for over 30 years.
00:20:55.519 --> 00:20:58.319
That's what Parents on a Mission is all about.
00:20:58.960 --> 00:21:18.799
And I am creating more and more farmers along with me who are working in the home and the hearts of parents to focus their mind and heart on their children's heart and focused on the root of the problem in the home.
00:21:19.119 --> 00:21:21.359
That's why I do what I do.
00:21:21.839 --> 00:21:44.799
I'm focusing on mom and dad, and our mission statement says turning the hearts of parents to their children, and turning the hearts of children to their parents as the best method for preventing children from joining negative lifestyles.
00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:59.519
Another way of saying human flourishing, another way of saying healthier and safer communities, another way of saying better culture creates better fruit.
00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:12.640
Better environment in the home produces better children who ultimately become better citizens, and so we have a safer and healthier community.
00:22:12.880 --> 00:22:16.000
Now, granted, this doesn't happen overnight.
00:22:16.240 --> 00:22:24.400
Again, that's why the hacking at the leaves of evil is important because there's immediate issues that have to be dealt with.
00:22:24.559 --> 00:22:30.960
So I'm not saying that we don't need those other things, law enforcement and counselors and things like that.
00:22:31.039 --> 00:22:32.400
I'm not saying that.
00:22:32.720 --> 00:22:46.720
But I am saying that there's too much attention focused there on the fruit, on the environment, on the problems that they are creating versus the problems that are creating the youth that are doing this.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:52.799
Now, I've been studying these things for a long time, and there's uh a woman by the name of Dr.
00:22:52.880 --> 00:23:07.200
Catherine Seifert, and she did a study, which she did, she went into the prisons and she interviewed many violent criminals, many in several prisons.
00:23:09.039 --> 00:23:30.960
And she says that in every case she found of these violent criminals that had committed acts of violence, murders, sex offenders, etc., all of them had been abandoned, abused, and neglected as children, and never had a substitute caregiver.
00:23:31.119 --> 00:23:37.599
They either had one or two or all three of those issues in their life when they were children.
00:23:38.480 --> 00:23:59.440
And it's to me obvious that that is what needs to happen, is that we are striking at the root and not only focusing on the fruit.
00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:13.119
So the last thing I want you to hear from me in this message is that you matter, you matter.
00:24:14.400 --> 00:24:52.640
You say, but Richard, I'm only a single mom, I'm a divorced parent, I'm just a regular dad, you matter, and as Marianne Williamson said, playing small does not serve the world, and shrinking back from your full talent and potential so that other people won't feel bad around you does not serve the world, and a lot of people do that, they're plain small because they're afraid.
00:24:52.720 --> 00:25:03.279
Well, if I shine too brightly, if I walk in my full potential and become very successful, that's going to make other people feel bad.
00:25:03.519 --> 00:25:06.480
That is the wrong mentality.
00:25:06.799 --> 00:25:16.640
You need to shine, you need to be bright, you need to find your voice, live in your potential, and succeed as much as possible.
00:25:16.960 --> 00:25:17.599
Why?
00:25:18.160 --> 00:25:30.319
Because when you let your light shine, you give other people permission to let their light shine because you become an encouragement to them, you become a model for them.
00:25:30.559 --> 00:25:35.279
And in the case of parents, your children are looking at you.
00:25:37.119 --> 00:25:46.000
And the brighter you're shining, and again, this is not about being a Hollywood star, a rock star, an athletic star.
00:25:46.400 --> 00:25:51.680
Great, fine for those people, great, but you don't have to be that.
00:25:52.160 --> 00:25:56.640
And oftentimes our kids look up to those people, it's just natural.
00:25:56.799 --> 00:25:58.400
We all kind of do that.
00:25:59.200 --> 00:26:06.640
But what I'm saying is our kids need to look up to mom and dad as heroes.
00:26:06.960 --> 00:26:30.640
We need to be their heroes, and we can be their heroes, and so I want you to hear what I'm saying to you about community leadership and human flourishing, because that is where we're going to create safer and healthier communities, and that starts in the home.
00:26:30.880 --> 00:26:48.640
That starts with you, mom and dad, your leadership, your thriving, your shining, you living in that potential is working at the root of what causes the fruit.
00:26:49.200 --> 00:26:56.240
And I wanted you to hear that message, believe it, live it.
00:26:57.039 --> 00:26:58.319
Thank you for listening.
00:26:58.400 --> 00:26:59.599
I'm Richard Ramos.
00:27:00.079 --> 00:27:04.319
You've been listening to the Parent Whisperer podcast.
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:17.359
I pray that you will share this message, this video, with somebody that you know, a friend or a family member that may need to hear this message, to be encouraged, that they matter.
00:27:17.839 --> 00:27:24.960
No matter what mistakes they've made or whatever circumstances they may be in, they matter.
00:27:25.039 --> 00:27:32.799
And I'm talking mostly about parents with children who are looking at you as their role model.
00:27:33.119 --> 00:27:35.039
It doesn't matter about the past.
00:27:35.200 --> 00:27:38.720
I'm talking about today and going forward.
00:27:39.440 --> 00:27:46.559
Also, I want to remind you that I have free resources at my website, RichardRamos.com.

00:27:59.920 --> 00:28:01.200
You can take that.
00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:08.880
All of those things simply to help you flourish as a mom, as a dad.
00:28:09.680 --> 00:28:10.960
Thanks for listening.
