WEBVTT
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.739
Hello and welcome to the latest episode of Inside Out.
00:00:19.039 --> 00:00:20.321
My name is Ian Wilkes.
00:00:21.001 --> 00:00:24.565
I'm here with the magnanimous Mr.
00:00:24.705 --> 00:00:25.567
Jim Bennett.
00:00:26.969 --> 00:00:27.710
Hello.
00:00:28.513 --> 00:00:35.408
I magnanimously welcome you as well to this latest episode because that's how magnanimous I am.
00:00:35.850 --> 00:00:37.654
You are certainly magnanimous, for sure.
00:00:37.893 --> 00:00:41.462
And I'm going to do a lot more research on big words.
00:00:41.902 --> 00:00:46.753
In the future, I'm going to come with some big words and I...
00:00:47.905 --> 00:00:51.832
I'd be interested to see if you will know what those words are to describe you.
00:00:52.212 --> 00:00:59.061
So, because you're very good at the big words, and I thought I was good, but I need to do a little bit of training there, a little bit of research in there.
00:00:59.482 --> 00:01:02.447
And we'll continue to have fun describing each other with these big words.
00:01:02.887 --> 00:01:04.549
Chip, it's so good to be with you.
00:01:04.850 --> 00:01:07.034
I always look forward to these conversations.
00:01:08.215 --> 00:01:12.701
What drives me is, you know, the need to help others, right?
00:01:12.930 --> 00:01:15.373
in some way, in some form, in some fashion.
00:01:15.953 --> 00:01:22.283
I'm encouraged by the response we get from many of our listeners that the podcasts that we're doing are helpful in some form.
00:01:23.465 --> 00:01:32.218
We try to stay on track in terms of, you know, dealing with the church issues and the doctrine and the history and low social aspects of the church.
00:01:32.897 --> 00:01:41.206
And of course, sometimes we move slightly outside of the main periphery of our scope of our podcast, which I think is also very good.
00:01:41.828 --> 00:01:50.658
And at times we talk about politics and we talk about politics because, and world affairs, because these things are important to us personally and our families.
00:01:51.739 --> 00:02:00.769
And we have people in our friendships and in our work who also have strong opinions on politics and religion.
00:02:01.346 --> 00:02:02.266
And it's important.
00:02:02.787 --> 00:02:09.718
I think it's important to be able to have these conversations about the relationship between the church and politics and what's going on in the world.
00:02:11.040 --> 00:02:15.146
And it's important to have civil discourse, to be respectful, be kind.
00:02:15.187 --> 00:02:16.169
We're not going to agree on everything.
00:02:16.209 --> 00:02:22.838
There's, you know, across all this is probably a wide band of political views and thoughts.
00:02:22.859 --> 00:02:23.539
And that's great.
00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:32.491
I think it's important to have your own views, whether you're Republican or Democrat, whether you're Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, like in the UK.
00:02:32.733 --> 00:02:33.913
You can hold any view you want.
00:02:34.414 --> 00:02:37.139
We live in mostly a free world, not entirely.
00:02:37.179 --> 00:02:43.367
We'll talk about that, I think, on the podcast and what's going on there, about freedom, liberty and family.
00:02:43.448 --> 00:02:44.650
I'm looking forward to getting into that.
00:02:45.110 --> 00:02:56.751
But it's important, I think, to, if you feel so strongly as I do and you do about certain things, things that are going on in the world, then it's important to be able to talk about that and understand that in the context of the church.
00:02:57.451 --> 00:03:00.918
And we've said repeatedly that there are major events happening in the world.
00:03:01.277 --> 00:03:14.778
You know, Ukraine, the Middle East, you know, North Korea, Iran, you know, UK, major issues in the UK in terms of social challenges, a lot of issues in the US.
00:03:14.799 --> 00:03:16.600
We have big issues here in Canada.
00:03:17.250 --> 00:03:21.556
There's a lot of the issues that we talk about span the world.
00:03:21.596 --> 00:03:26.762
They're not just unique to these countries, but they affect the world like immigration, economy, jobs.
00:03:27.644 --> 00:03:32.370
These are things that impact people on a very serious and a very personal level.
00:03:33.010 --> 00:03:44.765
And I have strong feelings like you and many others do on certain things, especially when it impacts global events happen and how that impacts people.
00:03:45.122 --> 00:03:48.507
us here locally in Canada or in the US or anywhere.
00:03:48.526 --> 00:03:52.932
So these are significant events and occurrences happening in the world.
00:03:53.473 --> 00:03:56.799
And I still, even though I'm outside the church, I look to the church.
00:03:56.959 --> 00:04:05.471
I look to the church leadership to have a position on certain things, to come out and speak up about really important things that are going on.
00:04:06.051 --> 00:04:09.896
And there's something happened recently that really, really bothers me.
00:04:10.237 --> 00:04:21.274
And as I said earlier before we did this podcast, With the Trump administration, I think I got to the point where I was saying to myself, nothing surprises me anymore.
00:04:22.555 --> 00:04:28.586
And I wake up the next day or into the next day, and lo and behold, something has happened.
00:04:29.067 --> 00:04:33.814
And it's actually shocked me or surprised me.
00:04:34.795 --> 00:04:37.220
And so the one thing I want to...
00:04:37.761 --> 00:04:40.365
Looking forward to having this conversation with you about...
00:04:40.898 --> 00:04:55.225
is something that happened uh in the last um in the last couple days so uh you know the trump administration is into what how many weeks now is it four five weeks now
00:04:56.548 --> 00:05:00.355
uh january 20th again it's about a month or a
00:05:00.375 --> 00:05:10.536
little more a little more than a month so trump uh came into that position in its entirety about a month ago.
00:05:10.675 --> 00:05:11.637
And a lot's happened.
00:05:11.757 --> 00:05:12.459
I'm sure you'll agree.
00:05:12.478 --> 00:05:15.863
A lot has happened in the last month or so.
00:05:15.884 --> 00:05:27.843
And, you know, a lot of that, those decisions, a lot of those actions have impacted the United States significantly.
00:05:28.444 --> 00:05:31.668
Certainly impacting us appearing in Canada, like the tariffs, for example.
00:05:31.689 --> 00:05:54.824
That's a big topic right now with Mexico and Canada and all these tariffs and there's other decisions that are affecting the United States population but there are decisions that have been made that are affecting the relationships between America and the rest of the world and again I want to highlight the need for my hope that The church has some position.
00:05:54.865 --> 00:06:02.701
The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is, as they claim, is the only true church upon the face of the earth and in regular contact with God.
00:06:02.742 --> 00:06:14.206
And presumably, God is watching what's going on in the world and has an opinion, a thought even, an idea, a suggestion, something to say.
00:06:14.786 --> 00:06:19.833
to the prophet, President Nelson, on the earth about what the heck is going on in the world.
00:06:20.434 --> 00:06:35.274
So what is, and I asked you if we could talk about this today because I feel so strongly and even if I have, I hope our listeners will get some of this, but I really do, but I know it will make me feel better to get certain things off my chest.
00:06:35.954 --> 00:06:39.199
And so recently there's been a United Nations vote.
00:06:39.540 --> 00:06:45.682
I want to talk about the Ukraine situation as the thing that's really important unhinged me.
00:06:45.884 --> 00:06:46.584
I'll use that word.
00:06:46.625 --> 00:06:52.733
I feel unhinged right now because America has done something that I did not expect.
00:06:53.274 --> 00:06:58.040
And I'm quite shocked and very shocked and stunned, actually.
00:06:58.762 --> 00:07:22.617
So the US, in a recent series of United Nations votes on condemning Russia for its illegal and naked aggression against Ukraine and invading Ukraine three years ago, almost three years ago and a few days, where a vote was tabled to condemn Russia's actions and aggression.
00:07:23.899 --> 00:07:32.935
The U.S., in these two key votes, certainly, sided with Russia in the United Nations to mark this third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
00:07:34.377 --> 00:07:39.485
And it also highlights Trump's position changes on the stance of the wall.
00:07:40.098 --> 00:07:51.670
First, the first one was that the US opposed a European-drafted resolution condemning Russia's actions and supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity.
00:07:52.612 --> 00:08:01.343
America voted the same way as Russia and other countries, including North Korea and Belarus, at the United Nations General Assembly.
00:08:01.442 --> 00:08:02.163
That was in New York.
00:08:03.064 --> 00:08:12.122
Then the US drafted and voted for a resolution at the United Nations Security Council, which called for an end to the conflict, but contained no criticism of Russia.
00:08:13.384 --> 00:08:20.853
And of course, the Security Council passed the resolution, but two key US allies, UK and France, abstained after their attempts to amend the wording.
00:08:21.713 --> 00:08:29.502
The main one for me was the motion that was tabled to condemn Russia's actions.
00:08:30.584 --> 00:08:53.999
And for me, based on reliable, trusted information, verifiable, trusted, not misinformation or disinformation, but reliable information that Russia did in fact invade Ukraine illegally, breaking all international rules, invaded a sovereign nation without provocation.
00:08:54.559 --> 00:08:55.441
There's another conversation.
00:08:55.461 --> 00:08:57.583
I can argue against that if you want.
00:08:58.284 --> 00:09:01.950
But it took the act to invade Ukraine.
00:09:02.145 --> 00:09:11.960
And we've seen extraordinary death and destruction from that decision, from the act.
00:09:12.259 --> 00:09:13.461
It's been going on for three years.
00:09:14.363 --> 00:09:18.288
On both sides, there's been hundreds of thousands of deaths.
00:09:20.471 --> 00:09:21.152
Unnecessary.
00:09:21.653 --> 00:09:22.413
Could have been avoided.
00:09:22.975 --> 00:09:24.336
But Russia, because of its...
00:09:25.197 --> 00:09:26.639
And Putin's personal...
00:09:29.025 --> 00:09:40.336
aspirations, and I've researched this, that it's reliable to expand and reabsorb those countries back into the Russian Empire.
00:09:40.356 --> 00:09:41.898
Imperialism.
00:09:41.918 --> 00:09:44.500
Naked imperialism.
00:09:44.520 --> 00:09:51.147
Not to necessarily fight against NATO's expansion.
00:09:51.246 --> 00:09:53.649
That could be a part of it.
00:09:53.708 --> 00:09:54.649
I think it is a part of it.
00:09:55.150 --> 00:10:10.760
But based on my research, Putin is driven by by this idealistic approach of restoring Russia's greatness and seeing Ukraine historically as it was.
00:10:10.860 --> 00:10:27.422
I mean, I can understand this historical relationship or some of the between Ukraine and Russia and trying to recover Ukraine as a lost territory or geography that originally was part of Russia or part of Russia's culture.
00:10:27.522 --> 00:10:41.081
And the argument for doing that is all kinds of arguments, like destroying the Nazi influence there, protecting Russian-speaking individuals in Ukraine, etc.
00:10:41.100 --> 00:10:58.229
There may or may not be some truth to that, but Putin's main focus is to expand and reabsorb and expand the Russian influence there by taking over Ukraine, and he won't stop there.
00:10:58.249 --> 00:11:10.443
Trump thinks it's about land, thinks that we can solve this by concessions, by giving land, but Putin's ambitions are greater than just land.
00:11:10.604 --> 00:11:18.394
It's absorbing the entire country, its culture, its people, and its land back into the fold.
00:11:19.115 --> 00:11:36.054
And so it took this decision to invade Ukraine, The world, most of the world at that time, except for North Korea, Russia, of course, Tehran, Iran, and Belarus, condemned and continue to condemn Putin's decision, Russia's actions there.
00:11:36.775 --> 00:11:44.546
And so this opportunity, especially on the anniversary of the third year, again, all these thousands of people have died.
00:11:44.765 --> 00:11:50.854
And by the way, Russia kidnapped, physically, children and took them into Russia.
00:11:51.073 --> 00:11:52.235
That has been verified.
00:11:53.096 --> 00:12:11.798
And breaking rules around war and using bombs and munitions that they're not supposed to, and in some cases, allegations of chemical weapons, albeit on a small scale, which, again, that needs to be investigated.
00:12:12.239 --> 00:12:21.582
So absolutely terrible, awful, illegal actions destruction caused by the decision.
00:12:22.384 --> 00:12:29.715
And an opportunity over the last few days to condemn Russia for its decisions and its actions.
00:12:30.716 --> 00:12:39.349
And now we have America who is now sided essentially with Russia and with North Korea and with Belarus.
00:12:40.309 --> 00:12:42.072
And I just can't believe that.
00:12:42.493 --> 00:12:48.638
And so That shocks me, but also equally as shocking is where's the church on this?
00:12:49.639 --> 00:12:50.600
Where's the leadership?
00:12:50.721 --> 00:12:52.602
Does the church have an opinion on this?
00:12:53.384 --> 00:12:55.368
You know, what's the right thing to do?
00:12:55.408 --> 00:12:59.192
Is it to stand up and speak up and speak out as the church?
00:12:59.793 --> 00:13:03.279
They say, no, we condemn Russia's actions.
00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:10.811
We do not agree with the president of the United States of America who's sided with Russia.
00:13:11.511 --> 00:13:12.693
Where's the church on this?
00:13:12.994 --> 00:13:19.422
What about the principles in the Book of Mormon on freedom, liberty, family, for doing the right thing?
00:13:19.442 --> 00:13:34.519
I did a little bit of research and there is extensive material that the church has to protect religious freedom, to protect the basic freedoms of people and the rights of people and to respect human rights.
00:13:35.220 --> 00:13:39.926
The church is an amazing organization at speaking up for stuff like that.
00:13:40.546 --> 00:13:47.977
and going to these different events and organizations and promoting the need and value of freedoms, including religious freedoms.
00:13:48.739 --> 00:13:56.890
And as the mouthpiece of the earth, President Nelson, what is God saying to President Nelson on this?
00:13:57.712 --> 00:14:01.698
Does God have an opinion as he communicated that to President Nelson?
00:14:02.740 --> 00:14:04.884
Where's the church leadership position on this?
00:14:05.585 --> 00:14:13.177
Why can't we speak up and condemn this decision by the President of the United States, who represents, obviously, America.
00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:33.057
You could tell in my tone I feel very angry, actually, upset and disappointed, because it's, you know, by being silent, you know, we are, the Church says if you're silent, then you're actually, you're part of the, you know, you're part of the decision.
00:14:33.077 --> 00:14:36.181
You condone it in some way, or you're not disagreeing with it.
00:14:36.902 --> 00:14:42.206
So, Anyway, I appreciate being able to get this off my chest, vent this.
00:14:43.128 --> 00:14:45.890
Would love to get your opinion on this and what you think is going on.
00:14:46.851 --> 00:14:54.961
We try our best to remain focused on the scope of the Inside Out, to focus predominantly on the church.
00:14:55.461 --> 00:15:00.886
But of course, politics, global affairs, they impact us, they impact the church.
00:15:01.508 --> 00:15:10.413
And the church, and I'll close my opening comments on this, the church must, should, have a position on these issues.
00:15:11.394 --> 00:15:20.649
And I'm hoping that we'll hear from the president of the church in due course, that we will read something or see something, even in a press release.
00:15:21.149 --> 00:15:24.033
Anyway, you've been very patient with my opening remarks.
00:15:24.073 --> 00:15:28.900
I'll stop and hand the time over and ask you, do you feel as strong as I do?
00:15:30.123 --> 00:15:31.985
Am I completely out to lunch here?
00:15:32.004 --> 00:15:34.808
Are my feelings misplaced?
00:15:35.029 --> 00:15:37.364
Do I feels so strong unnecessarily.
00:15:37.403 --> 00:15:44.393
But what are your thoughts on this and in respect to the church taking a position on some of this stuff?
00:15:47.035 --> 00:15:48.077
Well, I have many.
00:15:48.097 --> 00:15:54.264
And I don't think that this is outside the scope of this podcast.
00:15:54.485 --> 00:16:01.114
As I've talked many times about when we've talked about Trump, it's not just to express political opinions.
00:16:02.355 --> 00:16:14.438
It's to, as you describe, demonstrate what kind of impact this is having on the church and also on the faith of people in the church.
00:16:16.802 --> 00:16:21.489
Trump every day is a trial of my faith.
00:16:22.932 --> 00:16:34.590
He's not just an odious, terrible, dictator-like authoritarian leader, and he is all of those things.
00:16:35.553 --> 00:16:57.000
But he is a trial of my faith because I believe this is the church of Jesus Christ and I've been taught all my life that we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost at the age of eight when we are confirmed members of the church, that we have a unique spirit of discernment that the rest of the world does not have.
00:16:57.019 --> 00:17:07.724
And if that's true, how is it possible that we could have thrown in in such large numbers with such a terrible, odious man.
00:17:07.765 --> 00:17:29.169
And so it continues to be a trial of my faith that my fellow Latter-day Saints not only are not disturbed by this, but they applaud this, that they are embracing this, that they see Trump as a manifestation of God, not an enemy to him.
00:17:30.069 --> 00:17:39.944
When I think it's absolutely clear that he is an enemy to all things that are good, that he's an enemy to decency, to honesty, to integrity.
00:17:39.984 --> 00:17:51.259
All of the values that have been inculcated in me as a result of my membership in the church are values that Trump disdains and has absolutely no use for.
00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:58.607
So I just want to say, as you say, well, you know, we have to talk politics, and I know we usually talk about the church.
00:17:59.388 --> 00:18:01.171
To me, they are inseparable.
00:18:01.211 --> 00:18:06.093
You know, the Doctrine and Covenants talks about that The spiritual and the temporal are inseparable.
00:18:06.913 --> 00:18:26.619
In the case of Trump, I'd say the political and the religious are inseparable because the implications of the fact that Latter-day Saints see Trump positively and embrace and support him, that is a continuing trial of my faith on a daily basis.
00:18:27.500 --> 00:18:32.548
I got a text from my sister yesterday saying, oh, I really wish Dad were still here.
00:18:32.607 --> 00:18:33.930
My father were still here.
00:18:35.192 --> 00:18:37.875
Because somehow he might be able to make sense of this.
00:18:38.917 --> 00:18:40.138
And it's interesting.
00:18:40.180 --> 00:18:45.287
This is the first podcast you've recorded since I got back from Peru.
00:18:46.509 --> 00:18:51.115
I was in Peru for five days with the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square.
00:18:51.156 --> 00:18:53.279
And we performed.
00:18:53.299 --> 00:18:56.104
It was just a magnificent experience all the way around.
00:18:56.144 --> 00:18:59.690
And we performed in this massive stadium.
00:19:00.450 --> 00:19:10.444
that this Estadio Nacional right in Lima, Peru, and there were over 30,000 people that were in attendance.
00:19:10.545 --> 00:19:15.010
Many of them had lined up early in the day and standing in the summer heat.
00:19:15.271 --> 00:19:16.192
It's summer down there.
00:19:16.232 --> 00:19:24.404
And they were just a raucous and wonderfully appreciative crowd.
00:19:26.067 --> 00:19:28.151
I felt a little bit like I was a rock star.
00:19:28.211 --> 00:19:30.173
I felt like Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.
00:19:30.849 --> 00:19:32.413
It was just a lot of fun.
00:19:32.452 --> 00:19:36.883
But it was also interesting.
00:19:36.942 --> 00:19:38.807
We did two concerts when we were over there.
00:19:38.946 --> 00:19:46.061
One was the big concert on Saturday night, but the other one was a, they call it the VIP concert.
00:19:47.365 --> 00:19:49.970
And it was for Peruvian officials.
00:19:51.212 --> 00:20:00.192
And bigwigs, and I don't know the political structures of Peruvian government, but apparently a lot of the heavy hitters were in that room.
00:20:00.834 --> 00:20:05.539
But on the front row of that room were Mitt and Ann Romney.
00:20:06.942 --> 00:20:16.976
They had come, and my understanding is they are working with the church in terms of establishing relationships with governments internationally.
00:20:17.016 --> 00:20:19.740
And they were there the entire time.
00:20:19.759 --> 00:20:27.980
I only saw Mitt at that concert, but Ann Romney went on some of the sightseeing expeditions with the choir.
00:20:28.142 --> 00:20:30.064
And so they were there the entire time we were.
00:20:30.104 --> 00:20:38.433
And I was one of a handful of choir members that was selected to do kind of a meet and greet afterwards.
00:20:39.515 --> 00:20:43.200
And I had the opportunity to actually go shake Mitt Romney's hand.
00:20:43.721 --> 00:20:45.323
I've met him several times before.
00:20:45.343 --> 00:20:47.184
I reminded him of that.
00:20:47.704 --> 00:20:49.528
He acted like he remembered me.
00:20:50.107 --> 00:20:51.150
I'm pretty sure he didn't.
00:20:51.713 --> 00:20:52.414
But that's okay.
00:20:52.474 --> 00:20:53.036
I mean, he meets...
00:20:53.416 --> 00:20:57.523
My father always used to say, when you're in politics, you can never say, nice to meet you.
00:20:58.184 --> 00:21:02.532
Because then they will always say, I met you and I talked to you 14 years ago.
00:21:02.593 --> 00:21:03.173
Don't you remember?
00:21:03.213 --> 00:21:05.738
So Mitt was very gracious.
00:21:06.660 --> 00:21:07.961
And I told him a couple of things.
00:21:09.384 --> 00:21:13.771
One of the things I said to him was, I don't think you appreciate...
00:21:14.673 --> 00:21:16.877
I don't think you know how much...
00:21:18.625 --> 00:21:24.314
the Bennett family appreciated your vote to convict Trump in the first impeachment trial.
00:21:25.776 --> 00:21:31.523
Because that, when you did that, it felt like dad was still with us.
00:21:32.684 --> 00:21:39.375
It felt like that's something my father would have done and you had the courage to do it.
00:21:39.474 --> 00:21:48.575
And I told him, I consider that the greatest act of political courage I have seen or expect to see in my lifetime.
00:21:49.756 --> 00:21:51.557
And he seemed to be touched by that.
00:21:51.597 --> 00:21:54.480
And Anne was definitely touched by that.
00:21:54.621 --> 00:21:57.923
And she was willing to go off and say, I don't understand.
00:21:57.983 --> 00:22:00.886
Don't people realize this is wicked King Noah?
00:22:02.028 --> 00:22:03.809
Can't they see Trump for who he is?
00:22:03.829 --> 00:22:06.291
And Mitt was a bit more circumspect.
00:22:06.352 --> 00:22:16.001
I think he recognizes that anything he says, even privately, has the potential of showing up on the front page of the New York Times.
00:22:16.865 --> 00:22:21.232
But Mitt, you know, so I had that conversation with him.
00:22:22.575 --> 00:22:32.891
And what I got a sense of in Peru, oh, and the other thing that happened in Peru is we had a sacrament meeting right before we left.
00:22:34.133 --> 00:22:37.417
And Elder Suarez spoke of the Quorum of the Twelve.
00:22:37.478 --> 00:22:38.680
He was there the entire time.
00:22:38.720 --> 00:22:40.810
He came to the concert.
00:22:41.510 --> 00:22:44.634
The concert was narrated entirely in Spanish.
00:22:44.694 --> 00:22:46.817
Most of the songs we sang were in Spanish.
00:22:47.897 --> 00:22:54.305
And we had a teleprompter that had the words written out phonetically so that we wouldn't mispronounce them.
00:22:55.527 --> 00:23:17.489
But Elder Suarez gave a talk and I confess I was a little disappointed in Elder Suarez's talk because there was nothing in his talk that you and I and anybody that listens to General Conference or listens to Sunday School or whatever else it is, hasn't heard a million times before.
00:23:17.888 --> 00:23:20.471
I mean, it was very nice and pleasant talk.
00:23:21.031 --> 00:23:24.315
And I had somebody say, oh, aren't we blessed to have an apostle speak to us?
00:23:24.394 --> 00:23:26.457
And I'm like, well, yes.
00:23:26.758 --> 00:23:29.200
And wouldn't it be nice if he actually said something?
00:23:30.260 --> 00:23:32.522
There was just no real substance to it.
00:23:33.824 --> 00:23:39.549
And as I consider that and I thought about that, I want to answer your questions.
00:23:40.354 --> 00:23:44.057
Based on that experience, does the church have an opinion?
00:23:44.159 --> 00:23:45.780
Why isn't the church speaking out?
00:23:46.540 --> 00:23:53.108
And I think the answer to that question is I think the church probably has many opinions and many strong opinions.
00:23:54.570 --> 00:24:10.009
And I think they see themselves as being shackled, is maybe too strong a word, but being limited in terms of what they feel they can say.
00:24:11.074 --> 00:24:12.875
in an international church.
00:24:13.876 --> 00:24:25.107
What I got from Mitt Romney, what I got from just the whole Peru experience is that the church is trying very hard to establish itself as an international church.
00:24:25.729 --> 00:24:31.855
On paper, we have more members outside of the United States than we have inside the United States.
00:24:32.435 --> 00:24:38.582
And so I think we can make the case that we are an international church, but we are not perceived that way.
00:24:39.362 --> 00:24:40.522
I think, internationally.
00:24:40.583 --> 00:24:43.826
We continue to be perceived as an American church.
00:24:45.068 --> 00:24:49.253
And I think in many ways, we really still are an American church.
00:24:49.775 --> 00:24:52.798
Culturally, we are an American church.
00:24:52.938 --> 00:24:59.346
Culturally, the American influence is pervasive no matter where you go.
00:24:59.365 --> 00:25:04.853
And I think the church leaders are trying very hard to dial that back.
00:25:05.032 --> 00:25:09.753
And I think that It's a mixed bag as to whether they're succeeding.
00:25:10.454 --> 00:25:22.931
So I think that is the reason why we're not hearing more pointed opinions, is that I think they think that will reinforce the idea of the American church.
00:25:23.651 --> 00:25:28.176
So I offer that by way of explanation, not by way of excuse.
00:25:28.978 --> 00:25:29.838
Because I'm with you.
00:25:29.878 --> 00:25:31.801
I'm 100% with you.
00:25:31.821 --> 00:25:34.765
They need to be speaking out about this because...
00:25:35.362 --> 00:25:43.613
It's just so morally contemptible to be on the side of the dictators, to be on the side of the communists.
00:25:44.193 --> 00:25:45.596
It's stunning.
00:25:45.756 --> 00:25:47.117
You go back in church history.
00:25:47.759 --> 00:25:48.881
You don't have to go very far back.
00:25:49.181 --> 00:25:51.124
We're not talking the times of Joseph Smith.
00:25:51.523 --> 00:25:59.275
We're talking mid to late 20th century history where church leaders would get up in conference.
00:25:59.836 --> 00:26:01.238
I've got a series of quotes here.
00:26:02.306 --> 00:26:04.167
As Jeff Benson, I think, was one, wasn't he?
00:26:04.489 --> 00:26:05.369
Oh, jeez, yes.
00:26:05.450 --> 00:26:14.541
President Benson, his entire ministry in the Quorum of the Twelve was focused on condemning communism.
00:26:15.503 --> 00:26:16.144
Here's some quotes.
00:26:16.204 --> 00:26:25.156
He says, We must ever keep in mind that collectivized control over private property is not the United Order but is socialism, which is part of the communist strategy.
00:26:25.196 --> 00:26:31.925
And no true Latter-day Saint and no true American can be a socialist or a communist.
00:26:32.289 --> 00:26:35.034
or support programs leading in that direction.
00:26:35.934 --> 00:26:44.607
He wrote in a book, We must be vigilant in exposing and opposing communism in all its forms, for it seeks to destroy faith in God and to make the state supreme.
00:26:45.528 --> 00:26:45.710
J.
00:26:45.730 --> 00:26:49.315
Raymond Clarke says, Communism and socialism are state slavery.
00:26:49.375 --> 00:26:56.746
No matter what you call it, communism, socialism, the welfare state, or any other name, it is enslaving the soul of man.
00:26:57.442 --> 00:26:57.821
Bruce R.
00:26:57.842 --> 00:27:06.371
McConkie, communism is Satan's counterfeit for the gospel plan, and it is an avowed enemy of the God of the land.
00:27:07.471 --> 00:27:10.234
And I could go on and on and on.
00:27:10.295 --> 00:27:12.176
They were very outspoken about this.
00:27:13.117 --> 00:27:24.509
Well, when Mitt Romney ran for president in 2012, he said that Russia was our biggest enemy.
00:27:25.153 --> 00:27:27.276
foe on the international stage.
00:27:27.455 --> 00:27:31.240
And he was mocked by President Obama in the debate.
00:27:31.299 --> 00:27:32.740
He says, yeah, the 80s called.
00:27:32.780 --> 00:27:34.462
They want their foreign policy back.
00:27:35.663 --> 00:27:42.730
And the Republican Party was mocked and ridiculed for being opposed to Russia, being opposed to communism.
00:27:42.770 --> 00:27:51.138
Now, Russia now does not overtly claim to be a communist nation anymore now that the Soviet Union has fallen.
00:27:51.778 --> 00:27:53.060
But nothing has changed.
00:27:53.780 --> 00:28:03.739
And in fact, Vladimir Putin is more of an authoritarian than any Russian leader, with maybe the exception of Joseph Stalin.
00:28:04.661 --> 00:28:12.732
All the communist leaders did was use communism as a pretext for an authoritarian dictatorship.
00:28:13.334 --> 00:28:16.157
And now Putin just doesn't even use the pretext anymore.
00:28:16.198 --> 00:28:17.819
Putin is open with it.
00:28:18.441 --> 00:28:20.064
He's a dictator.
00:28:20.304 --> 00:28:21.184
He's an authoritarian.
00:28:21.665 --> 00:28:24.150
Now, China is still...
00:28:24.769 --> 00:28:28.336
a communist government, although there have been a lot of market reforms.
00:28:28.415 --> 00:28:31.300
It's not what it was in its Maoist heyday.
00:28:31.340 --> 00:28:36.849
But North Korea is a Stalinist communist state.
00:28:37.810 --> 00:28:44.982
These are all the countries now that America is now aligned with, that America voted with.
00:28:45.143 --> 00:28:47.047
We have turned our backs on NATO.
00:28:47.626 --> 00:28:51.513
When you talk about, well, jeez, they're not going to get NATO membership.
00:28:51.970 --> 00:28:55.473
NATO has been rendered irrelevant by Donald Trump.
00:28:56.054 --> 00:29:06.286
Donald Trump has told NATO that since they're not paying their dues, he thinks that they pay some fee to be part of NATO when that's not how it works.
00:29:06.365 --> 00:29:10.130
But he said, well, I'm going to tell Russia they can do whatever they want.
00:29:11.250 --> 00:29:14.634
That's a direct quote from the president of the United States.
00:29:15.596 --> 00:29:21.061
I mean, this is so flagrantly wrong.
00:29:21.857 --> 00:29:23.339
This is so disturbing.
00:29:23.941 --> 00:29:25.442
This is so unnerving.
00:29:25.461 --> 00:29:27.845
And it is so immoral.
00:29:27.865 --> 00:29:32.111
It's not just a political disagreement.
00:29:32.191 --> 00:29:36.695
We're not talking about legitimate policy differences.
00:29:37.336 --> 00:29:39.839
We are talking about good versus evil.
00:29:40.361 --> 00:29:44.326
We are talking about aligning with what Bruce R.
00:29:44.365 --> 00:29:48.471
McConkie called the avowed enemy of the God of the land.
00:29:48.510 --> 00:29:54.670
We are talking about about the United States being the bad guys.
00:29:55.471 --> 00:29:59.315
I'm reminded of this skit on British television.
00:29:59.375 --> 00:30:05.701
I don't know what the program was, but it's two Nazi SS officers.
00:30:06.603 --> 00:30:10.106
And one of them says, well, why do we have a skull on our caps?
00:30:11.788 --> 00:30:12.990
Isn't that disturbing to you?
00:30:13.911 --> 00:30:15.031
Are we the baddies?
00:30:17.315 --> 00:30:19.676
He says, it feels like we're the baddies.
00:30:20.705 --> 00:30:24.630
And they talk about that over and over again, and it's played for laughs.
00:30:25.471 --> 00:30:30.396
But I look at what's happening on the international stage now, and we're the baddies.
00:30:31.117 --> 00:30:33.579
America is one of the baddies.
00:30:34.340 --> 00:30:35.061
George W.
00:30:35.122 --> 00:30:44.613
Bush, after 9-11, described the axis of evil, and he put North Korea in the axis of evil.
00:30:44.712 --> 00:30:46.074
These are evil nations.
00:30:47.174 --> 00:30:49.258
Well, we're now part of the axis of evil.
00:30:50.049 --> 00:30:51.672
We're lining up with those guys.
00:30:51.751 --> 00:30:53.273
We're lining up with the baddies.
00:30:53.753 --> 00:30:55.655
We're not lining up with the good guys.
00:30:55.757 --> 00:31:00.301
We're not lining up with the people who have been our allies since World War II.
00:31:01.202 --> 00:31:11.153
It's just up is down, black is white, and it's Latter-day Saints who are cheering it on.
00:31:11.173 --> 00:31:14.057
This is what's breaking my heart.
00:31:14.721 --> 00:31:40.845
It's the Mormons who are going against, I mean, all the people who support Trump also would tell you that they adore Ezra Taft Benson and they adore the far-right ideology that church leaders have tried to distance themselves from, but which was, you know, espoused by Ezra Taft Benson, by J.
00:31:40.904 --> 00:31:43.009
Reuben Clark, by Spencer W.
00:31:43.048 --> 00:31:43.450
Kimball.
00:31:43.569 --> 00:31:50.181
I have a quote here, communism is a godless philosophy that seeks to destroy man's agency and enslave him to the state.
00:31:50.221 --> 00:31:51.222
That was in 1977.
00:31:51.343 --> 00:31:56.612
I mean, that wasn't in the 19th century.
00:31:56.652 --> 00:32:03.324
That's recent enough that most people who are alive today were alive when that was said.
00:32:03.344 --> 00:32:09.321
I mean, this is And we have just abandoned all of this as a church.
00:32:10.041 --> 00:32:11.463
We have moved away from this.
00:32:11.683 --> 00:32:23.116
And church leaders, I do think, I am told repeatedly, and I believe it, that behind the scenes, church leaders are not Trump fans.
00:32:23.416 --> 00:32:26.140
They recognize how problematic Donald Trump is.
00:32:27.501 --> 00:32:35.109
I've had actually multiple people tell me that not a single member of the Quorum of the Twelve or the First Presidency voted for Donald Trump.
00:32:35.521 --> 00:32:36.884
I can't confirm that.
00:32:37.664 --> 00:32:38.746
That's speculation.
00:32:38.786 --> 00:32:54.144
But if all of that's true, they're not speaking out for what reason?
00:32:55.246 --> 00:32:57.328
And it feels like cowardice.
00:32:57.608 --> 00:32:59.991
I can't think of any other appropriate word.
00:33:01.953 --> 00:33:08.063
I don't know that they would describe it as cowardice because they would describe it as, okay, we're trying not to be an American church.
00:33:08.584 --> 00:33:11.788
We're trying not to comment only on what happens in America.
00:33:11.929 --> 00:33:20.041
And yet, it was only, what, two years ago that President Oaks gave a talk about the United States Constitution and General Conference?
00:33:20.823 --> 00:33:32.278
I think it's a fool's errand to think that we're ever going to get away from how tied we are to American culture.
00:33:32.318 --> 00:33:40.490
The idea that suddenly that's going to disappear, I just don't see it.
00:33:40.730 --> 00:33:42.451
I just don't see how that's going to work.
00:33:43.192 --> 00:33:57.530
And so if we are still tied to American culture, and if Latter-day Saints in America are aligning with evil in the form of Donald Trump, then yeah, I think the church has a duty to speak out.
00:33:57.691 --> 00:34:01.832
And I am just as frustrated as you are that they're not willing to do it.
00:34:02.393 --> 00:34:06.141
So that's my rant in response to your rant.
00:34:06.340 --> 00:34:08.324
And I just, so where does this leave us?
00:34:09.085 --> 00:34:11.311
Yeah, this is like a, for me, it's like a counseling session.
00:34:11.331 --> 00:34:13.675
You should be able to talk about these things and get it off the chest.
00:34:13.735 --> 00:34:16.059
And, you know, I, I'm not American.
00:34:17.922 --> 00:34:18.364
You are.
00:34:19.146 --> 00:34:23.273
You, you know, you understand America far more than I do.
00:34:24.034 --> 00:34:28.338
I can say that our relationship, my family and my personal relationship with America is one.
00:34:29.000 --> 00:34:32.724
I hold America in high regard, a great deal of respect, continue to do.
00:34:32.764 --> 00:34:33.626
That won't change.
00:34:34.065 --> 00:34:35.367
We have a lot of friends in the States.
00:34:35.927 --> 00:34:40.873
We go there many, many times on holiday, on business, et cetera.
00:34:41.534 --> 00:34:44.699
We have an affinity with America, the American people.
00:34:45.340 --> 00:34:46.240
We love America.
00:34:46.300 --> 00:35:02.713
We have high expectations, rightly or wrongly, that America, a good, strong America, acting with integrity, with fairness, but firmness as well, is essential, critical for stability in the world, with no question.
00:35:03.315 --> 00:35:07.340
You know, militarily, economically, politically, socially.
00:35:07.360 --> 00:35:20.538
When America is, it sounds like we're describing the church again, but when America is doing the right things, and it does a lot of the time, it is the most extraordinary country.
00:35:20.617 --> 00:35:22.139
It's got the can-do attitude.
00:35:22.599 --> 00:35:50.170
You know, I grew up in a socialistic environment in the uk that was a very different environment to what i have here in canada and my experience in the united states and america has um the can do get it done attitude on the projects that i work on in the big projects we are i always welcomed and a few of us did the American companies that would come in to work on the projects.
00:35:50.550 --> 00:36:09.873
And in fact, a lot of the British jurisdictions, governments over there, the authorities there would prefer the Americans to be on the project because there was a attitude of getting things done, getting it done and getting it done right and bringing that can-do attitude.
00:36:10.494 --> 00:36:11.777
And America's known for that.
00:36:12.978 --> 00:36:20.855
You know, getting things done, motivation, driven, competitive, and that brings a lot of qualities.
00:36:21.516 --> 00:36:27.023
And this has been my personal and my professional experience working with professionals in the United States.
00:36:27.443 --> 00:36:33.891
And my friends in America are very incredible people, extraordinarily motivated, talented individuals.
00:36:34.253 --> 00:36:39.195
I'm not saying America has a monopoly on talent or can-do attitude.
00:36:39.496 --> 00:36:46.005
I'm saying I see that attitude more in abundance in America than I do anywhere else in the world.
00:36:46.065 --> 00:36:47.608
I've traveled to other parts of the world.
00:36:48.449 --> 00:36:51.735
We need a good, strong America in the world.
00:36:52.235 --> 00:36:56.521
Without that anchor, we're in trouble.
00:36:57.143 --> 00:37:16.987
And we're now seeing the decision from the President of the United States, who is changing the fundamentals of of those basic important principles about integrity, honesty and rule of law and essentially doing the right thing.
00:37:17.548 --> 00:37:20.251
You may or may not have seen some of my comments on Facebook.
00:37:20.311 --> 00:37:26.780
I felt so strongly I put some of these things on Facebook and I get very little response and that's okay.
00:37:26.822 --> 00:37:33.351
I don't know if people are concerned or afraid to post or whether it would ensue in an argument online.
00:37:33.411 --> 00:37:37.335
And again, I said earlier that we need to have I think we need to talk about these things.
00:37:37.956 --> 00:37:39.639
Social media is a platform to do that.
00:37:40.199 --> 00:37:44.385
And I think we can have a civil and positive discourse, a respectful discourse on that.
00:37:44.925 --> 00:37:57.041
Some of the things I've said that I feel so strongly about that I put on Facebook is for the first time in history, a president of the United States of America has voted with the enemies of the free world, Russia, North Korea, Belarus.
00:37:57.543 --> 00:38:02.730
If there is a leader of the free world, it is not, I repeat, not the president of the United States.
00:38:03.617 --> 00:38:22.844
I've also said that on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, during a key vote at the UN General Assembly, the United States of America sided with Russia and North Korea in voting against the resolution condemning Russia's illegal war.
00:38:23.364 --> 00:38:27.449
Russia and North Korea must absolutely love America right now.
00:38:27.911 --> 00:38:28.791
I'm lost for words.
00:38:29.632 --> 00:38:56.878
And then earlier I put on here that described Putin and Trump as like the Godfather movie where you've got the Corleone family and Don Corleone is the Don and he's got a rival, got a number of rivals, but Don Emilio Barzini is the other rival there in the Mafia movie there in the Godfather.
00:38:56.898 --> 00:39:09.945
And I go in a little bit about why I see a similarity between Trump and Putin looking like gangster, godfather-type politics, carving up Ukraine, going into Ukraine, basically.
00:39:09.985 --> 00:39:20.782
And there's a deal being done this Thursday, Friday, by the way, where America will take half of much of the GDP of Ukraine in return for investing in Ukraine without any security guarantees.
00:39:21.163 --> 00:39:22.465
It's like a shakedown.
00:39:22.525 --> 00:39:26.811
It's like, look, I get that you need to get the money back.
00:39:26.851 --> 00:39:27.672
I understand that.
00:39:28.273 --> 00:39:32.505
But I understand that America's put billions in, and so has Europe, by the way.
00:39:32.525 --> 00:39:33.527
I think it's very, very close.
00:39:33.588 --> 00:39:34.809
Not the 300 billion, that.
00:39:35.210 --> 00:39:49.327
By the way, in terms of the facts, Trump gets a lot of the information incorrect, blurts out these numbers, and a lot of the time is either lying or is factually incorrect and can be proven.
00:39:49.387 --> 00:40:00.721
And by the way, two days ago at the press conference, press meeting that they had in front of Trump there, I think it was at the White House, where Macron, President of France, showed up.
00:40:01.280 --> 00:40:16.434
Trump talked about the financial conditions with Ukraine, loans and investment, and Macron publicly had to correct him, did it very nicely, put his hand on Trump's hand and said, actually, no, you're wrong.
00:40:16.474 --> 00:40:17.856
You've got that wrong.
00:40:17.896 --> 00:40:20.599
Again, for our listeners, you should go and look at that.
00:40:21.219 --> 00:40:24.503
You know, this is not something that the, I'm not talking about any media reporting.
00:40:24.543 --> 00:40:42.889
I'm talking about going to listen to what Trump is saying, what words are coming out of his mouth, and then watching the French president correct him nicely, more than I think what Trump deserved, publicly, and listening to what the French president had to say.
00:40:42.909 --> 00:40:44.672
It did a remarkable job there.
00:40:45.755 --> 00:40:52.706
And so you've got this president who is a liar, who's not concerned about facts and truth.
00:40:53.601 --> 00:41:04.655
who is now behaving like a mafia gangster, carving up Ukraine, deciding what's happening with Ukraine, with Russia, without Ukraine at the table.
00:41:06.137 --> 00:41:07.398
It's extraordinary.
00:41:08.119 --> 00:41:19.233
And so I've commented on these on my Facebook social media, and I've not commented on the church because I don't want to bring the church into disrepute.
00:41:20.315 --> 00:41:22.898
However, I am looking...
00:41:23.233 --> 00:41:25.978
to the church for leadership.
00:41:26.840 --> 00:41:31.947
The church is very, you know, you talked earlier about, you know, why is the church not responding?
00:41:32.007 --> 00:41:33.789
Is it in a difficult place?
00:41:33.869 --> 00:41:36.554
It has these opinions, but it's afraid of sharing them.
00:41:37.135 --> 00:41:38.177
Is it a bit cowardly?
00:41:38.317 --> 00:41:38.918
I think it is.
00:41:38.938 --> 00:41:42.344
I think the church is very concerned about what it says politically.
00:41:43.385 --> 00:41:51.538
But if you go back in time and you've given this as an example, it seems that the church leaders have not been afraid to speak up.
00:41:52.065 --> 00:41:53.849
You've given us five or six quotes.
00:41:54.329 --> 00:41:59.039
If you go back further in time, the leaders of the church are completely unafraid about speaking the mind.
00:41:59.360 --> 00:42:20.652
If you go back even further in time to the Book of Mormon, there's examples with Nephi, where in the Book of Mormon, across the Book of Mormon, Nephi and Alma, Nephi, for example, was rebuking his brothers because they were being, you know, misbehaving.
00:42:20.711 --> 00:42:24.237
They were breaking the commandments and they were threatening his life.
00:42:24.818 --> 00:42:28.161
And Nephi said that his words were too strong for his brothers.
00:42:28.181 --> 00:42:33.528
He said Nephi's words were harsh because he loved truth and he wanted to help his brothers turn to God.
00:42:33.568 --> 00:42:36.672
Nephi's brothers reacted violently to his teachings.
00:42:37.112 --> 00:42:38.054
Nephi understood that.
00:42:38.173 --> 00:42:50.063
He said a quote in Nephi 1, 1 Nephi 16, 2 says, Nephi says, the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center.
00:42:51.324 --> 00:42:53.909
Why can't the modern church relationship be bold?
00:42:55.030 --> 00:42:56.773
The scriptures say, be bold but not overbearing.
00:42:57.434 --> 00:42:58.856
Why can't we be bold?
00:42:58.896 --> 00:43:04.266
Why can't Nelson and the prophets speak up like earlier prophets going back to the 70s?
00:43:04.686 --> 00:43:08.652
Elizabeth Benson was the prophet when you and I were on a mission, late 80s.
00:43:09.409 --> 00:43:12.333
And he had these, you know, that's like in our own lifetime.
00:43:12.353 --> 00:43:14.356
That's only 35 years ago or whatever, right?
00:43:15.137 --> 00:43:22.626
And the church seemed to have this confidence to be able to speak up and speak out and be unafraid.
00:43:23.228 --> 00:43:26.351
And you can disagree with that, fine, but they were unafraid to speaking out.
00:43:27.333 --> 00:43:37.266
You know, the church, as I said earlier at the very beginning, has got this long history of, you know, supporting the Constitution, trying to do the right thing.
00:43:37.666 --> 00:43:41.130
It teaches that the Holy Ghost speaketh of truth and testifies of truth.
00:43:42.052 --> 00:43:44.496
It talks about the role and responsibility of prophets.
00:43:44.657 --> 00:43:57.275
It's to tell the world what has happened or what's happening and what is going to happen if the world disobeys the commandments and to speak about the future, to prophesy, to prophesy.
00:43:57.356 --> 00:44:19.092
Why can't President Nelson, as the prophet, and to be his fundamental self in being a prophet, to prophesy You know, the church prophesied in the proclamation to the world that, you know, if they don't follow the basic principles of family, then great calamities, I think, would come upon the world, right?
00:44:20.172 --> 00:44:21.434
Maybe this is that.
00:44:21.534 --> 00:44:24.237
Maybe the church sees that as a connection.
00:44:24.277 --> 00:44:24.958
I don't know.
00:44:25.398 --> 00:44:59.445
But why is President Nelson not coming out as the leader of the only true church upon the face of the earth and prophesying, speaking up, having a position, prophesying, being as bold as Nephi and earlier prophets, and saying, look, this is what Trump has done to side with Russia and North Korea, who murder its own people, who torture its own people, etc., who have invaded Ukraine and caused immense personal destruction to the people of Ukraine and to his own people that he doesn't care about.
00:44:59.905 --> 00:45:00.686
They're just fodder.
00:45:01.378 --> 00:45:03.920
You've now got the North Koreans in the war.
00:45:04.501 --> 00:45:07.606
Putin doesn't care about individuals, about people.
00:45:08.166 --> 00:45:11.690
He cares about his political goals and objectives.
00:45:12.231 --> 00:45:14.394
And Trump cares about it as well.
00:45:14.715 --> 00:45:17.599
I honestly believe, Jim, that Trump is focused.
00:45:18.860 --> 00:45:25.208
The very center of this, one of the key centers is focused on trying to get the Nobel Peace Prize at any cost.
00:45:27.311 --> 00:45:28.773
Sell Ukraine down the river.
00:45:29.474 --> 00:45:31.496
Make massive concessions to Russia.
00:45:31.516 --> 00:45:36.083
Don't stand up against Russia, who's going to expand beyond Ukraine, by the way.
00:45:36.123 --> 00:45:37.666
That's why the Europeans now...
00:45:37.706 --> 00:45:39.469
That's why NATO's breaking up.
00:45:39.929 --> 00:45:43.695
That's why the Europeans now are saying, we can't look to America as an ally.
00:45:44.235 --> 00:45:50.784
We now need to create a European defense force, and they're doing that right now, and they have to, because Russia will continue to expand its territory.
00:45:50.985 --> 00:45:52.228
You're not going to stop it at Ukraine.
00:45:52.807 --> 00:45:56.333
America is only interested in Europe from a financial investment perspective.
00:45:57.057 --> 00:46:02.847
and is now looking at changing the whole geopolitics, changing NATO.
00:46:02.867 --> 00:46:05.710
I think we've seen the beginning of the breakup of the NATO.
00:46:05.731 --> 00:46:07.112
I think you mentioned that earlier.
00:46:07.152 --> 00:46:13.603
And America is not the America that we've relied on.
00:46:13.623 --> 00:46:18.289
I agree there's some arguments that the world relied on America too much.
00:46:20.012 --> 00:46:20.574
I agree with that.
00:46:20.693 --> 00:46:23.057
I think there's a lot more that the rest of the world could have done.
00:46:23.554 --> 00:46:24.255
to help themselves.
00:46:24.295 --> 00:46:25.596
America had to come to the rescue.
00:46:25.617 --> 00:46:27.498
I think there's a lot of evidence behind that.
00:46:29.001 --> 00:46:42.356
But to retrench and to come back and just to be interested in this financially and to not condemn Russia for this aggression is just unforgivable.
00:46:42.456 --> 00:46:46.342
And for the church not to come out and speak up is unforgivable.
00:46:46.601 --> 00:46:47.282
It's cowardly.
00:46:48.083 --> 00:46:48.824
It's unforgivable.
00:46:49.085 --> 00:46:49.565
It's weak.
00:46:51.228 --> 00:46:54.860
If God has a voice in this, Surely he does.
00:46:54.900 --> 00:46:57.244
What does he think?
00:46:57.625 --> 00:47:04.376
And therefore, if Nelson is the mouthpiece, why is Nelson not speaking the words of the mind of God?
00:47:04.416 --> 00:47:08.224
Or does the God not have, the Lord not have an opinion on this?
00:47:08.304 --> 00:47:09.545
Is he quiet?
00:47:09.927 --> 00:47:10.668
And if so, why?
00:47:10.688 --> 00:47:16.038
So, yeah, I'm trying to piece all this together and trying to understand that.
00:47:17.378 --> 00:47:24.271
process with God and revelation and discernment and doing the right thing and being bold and speaking up.
00:47:24.411 --> 00:47:32.967
You said when you met Mitt Romney, you appreciated him for making a very courageous decision in condemning Trump.
00:47:34.510 --> 00:47:36.574
And Mitt Romney can do it.
00:47:37.496 --> 00:47:38.117
You can do it.
00:47:38.137 --> 00:47:38.798
I can do it.
00:47:38.998 --> 00:47:40.202
We can stand up for the right thing.
00:47:40.961 --> 00:47:43.364
And so I'm disappointed in the church.
00:47:44.166 --> 00:47:45.027
That's an understatement.
00:47:45.146 --> 00:47:45.907
I'm disappointed.
00:47:46.268 --> 00:48:00.405
I'm actually ashamed that the church that I used to belong to can't come out and do and say something on something like this because we're now seeing going to be massive repercussions on this.
00:48:01.626 --> 00:48:08.155
And is it also, to your point, that the church is afraid to speak up because most of the members or many of the members are pro-Trumpers?
00:48:09.797 --> 00:48:10.617
It just baffles me.
00:48:11.233 --> 00:48:17.663
So our listeners are probably exhausted by now listening to all this.
00:48:18.264 --> 00:48:21.909
And I know many of our listeners will have a thought and a position.
00:48:21.949 --> 00:48:24.333
They'll feel strongly about these things.
00:48:24.472 --> 00:48:27.737
And we're not asking people to agree to us at all or agree to our opinions.
00:48:27.797 --> 00:48:34.206
But you are right to remind me that the scope of the Inside Out does include talking about politics.
00:48:34.347 --> 00:48:35.148
It is inseparable.
00:48:35.347 --> 00:48:35.809
You are right.
00:48:36.802 --> 00:48:40.786
And these things, as I say, they affect us, they affect our lives.
00:48:41.146 --> 00:49:01.228
And if we can't stand up, Jim, for doing the right thing and speak up and speak against a cowardly, bully, gangster, thug like Putin, and if we're going to say, if we cast North Korea or Belarus, these dictatorships, and if we side with them, what the hell are we doing if the leader of the free world can't even do that?
00:49:01.630 --> 00:49:10.954
And again, the profit of the free world I don't think he's been described like that, but the prophet of the free world can't open his mouth and say something.
00:49:11.155 --> 00:49:13.038
I'm just shocked.
00:49:13.458 --> 00:49:16.682
So anyway, you've been very patient with me.
00:49:16.842 --> 00:49:23.253
Our listeners have been extraordinarily patient listening to this, but it's something that I feel very strongly about.
00:49:23.934 --> 00:49:24.494
Oh, me too.
00:49:24.876 --> 00:49:28.101
And I think, I mean, it's an exhausting time to be alive.
00:49:28.141 --> 00:49:31.947
It's exhausting that we're having to live through this.
00:49:32.887 --> 00:49:41.240
My brother-in-law, There's a man by the name of Nate Ullman, and he wrote a, he has a blog called Thoughts from a Tamed Cynic.
00:49:42.501 --> 00:49:44.565
And he wrote an article called The Day of Infamy.
00:49:45.965 --> 00:49:52.251
And he begins, he says, on August 14th, 1941, the United States of America became the leader of the free world.
00:49:53.514 --> 00:50:14.614
He talks about the creation of the Atlantic Charter, which was the underlying alliance that led to NATO's And that when World War II hit and then when America was attacked in Pearl Harbor, that that's the alliance that put everything together.
00:50:15.835 --> 00:50:20.519
And so I'm just going to quote a few things that he says.
00:50:21.061 --> 00:50:25.105
Trump is fundamentally wrong to view alliances as a sign of American weakness.
00:50:25.644 --> 00:50:35.132
For 80 years, a large part of what it means for the United States to be a powerful nation— is that it can expect the support of the wealthiest and freest countries of the world.
00:50:35.773 --> 00:50:42.445
That gives the United States influence and global reach that literally no country in the history of the world has been able to match.
00:50:43.206 --> 00:50:49.416
He is rapidly destroying one of the twin pillars on which that American power has been based.
00:50:49.978 --> 00:50:54.666
That power is not based solely on economic or military clout.
00:50:55.233 --> 00:51:13.195
It also comes from the fact that despite the inevitable machinations of nations and America's compromises and shortcomings, ultimately, the United States has been committed to the defense of Western democracy and has stood against aggression and military adventurism.
00:51:14.376 --> 00:51:25.010
And, you know, here we are with Trump not only not standing against aggression and military adventurism, he's proposing aggression.
00:51:25.313 --> 00:51:26.576
and military adventurism.
00:51:26.876 --> 00:51:30.039
He wants to make you guys in Canada the 51st state.
00:51:30.561 --> 00:51:35.367
He wants to take over Greenland, and he's even said that we might use the military to do that.
00:51:35.867 --> 00:51:38.351
He wants to seize the Panama Canal.
00:51:38.911 --> 00:51:39.572
He wants to...
00:51:39.893 --> 00:51:46.902
Just yesterday, he posted a video generated by AI called Trump Gaza.
00:51:47.842 --> 00:51:51.387
It's the most ridiculous, obscene thing you have ever seen.
00:51:51.407 --> 00:51:52.690
It shows...
00:51:53.313 --> 00:52:02.061
And the AI is bizarre because it shows at one point these women in bikinis, but they also have beards and they're belly dancing.
00:52:02.282 --> 00:52:03.222
It's really bizarre.
00:52:03.844 --> 00:52:08.347
But it shows Gaza as this kind of Vegas utopia.
00:52:09.168 --> 00:52:13.733
And Elon Musk walks down the street with money raining down on his head.
00:52:13.793 --> 00:52:17.956
There's a huge gold statue of Donald Trump in the middle of a town square.
00:52:17.996 --> 00:52:22.961
You see Donald Trump in a casino groping.
00:52:23.393 --> 00:52:30.864
a showgirl, as if that's supposed to be a great thing, and there's this music in the background, and it's Trump Gaza, Trump Gaza.
00:52:30.884 --> 00:52:37.413
And he proposed this idea of cleansing Gaza.
00:52:37.472 --> 00:52:52.952
He even used the word cleansing, which in the history of the world of ethnic cleansing, I mean, how much more blunt do you have to be to recognize that this is who this man is?
00:52:53.858 --> 00:53:06.177
He wants to cleanse Gaza of all the Gazans and send them to other countries, kick them out of their homes, remove them from their land, and build a casino that has a huge gold statue of Donald Trump in the middle of it.
00:53:06.938 --> 00:53:08.079
It's obscene.
00:53:08.119 --> 00:53:09.643
It's obscene.
00:53:09.663 --> 00:53:10.684
It's immoral.
00:53:10.885 --> 00:53:13.208
It's not just politically wrong.
00:53:13.688 --> 00:53:21.942
Going back to my brother-in-law's essay, because, Ian, I brought this up because you talk about the prophet of the free world, the leader of the free world.
00:53:23.362 --> 00:53:30.652
And he ends his essay by saying, I hope and pray that the damage that Trump has done in the last few weeks is not permanent.
00:53:30.853 --> 00:53:42.811
But if it is, I fear that February 24th, 2025, and that was the day that we voted with North Korea and with Russia and with China against Ukraine.
00:53:43.773 --> 00:53:53.427
But if it is, I fear that February 24th, 2025 will mark the day when the United States of America stopped being the leader of the free world.
00:53:54.128 --> 00:54:01.235
It is a deeply shameful thing to sell out an ally that has bravely resisted with our support an aggressive tyrant.
00:54:01.936 --> 00:54:02.936
Deeply shameful.
00:54:03.478 --> 00:54:05.780
I am furious at what Trump is doing to Ukraine.
00:54:05.820 --> 00:54:10.985
More than that, I am furious at what he is doing to the United States.
00:54:12.266 --> 00:54:13.487
And this is where we are.
00:54:13.527 --> 00:54:28.416
We have an authoritarian leader who is doing things that Church leaders have decried with their full voices and at full volume for decades.
00:54:29.117 --> 00:54:34.545
And now when we have a leader that's doing it, we're silent.
00:54:35.246 --> 00:54:35.867
We're shutting up.
00:54:36.628 --> 00:54:46.242
And you brought up something that I have considered in the past, but didn't really want to consider here, but I fear it may very well be true.
00:54:47.143 --> 00:54:49.565
Because I've made excuses before.
00:54:50.242 --> 00:54:56.228
for church leaders not speaking up on this in that, oh, they don't want to look like an American church.
00:54:56.509 --> 00:54:59.351
Oh, they don't want to upset international members.
00:55:00.152 --> 00:55:04.878
But you said they don't want to upset their Trumpy supporters.
00:55:05.297 --> 00:55:07.820
They don't want to upset Trumpy Latter-day Saints.
00:55:08.722 --> 00:55:36.215
And there's something very real to that because I think they are still stinging from the rebuke they got from a large portion of church membership when they stood with the science in the midst of the pandemic, when they said, get vaccinated, when they said, wear a mask, when they said, take appropriate precautions.
00:55:36.315 --> 00:55:39.199
President Nelson spoke out very bluntly.
00:55:39.280 --> 00:55:42.425
He called the vaccines a literal godsend.
00:55:43.202 --> 00:55:46.246
So this is a prophet of the Lord referencing God.
00:55:46.266 --> 00:55:50.253
And he's essentially saying, God sent this vaccine.
00:55:50.333 --> 00:55:55.581
This vaccine is the answer to the prayers that I've asked you to offer.
00:55:56.322 --> 00:55:58.204
In general conference, he said, we're going to fast.
00:55:58.244 --> 00:56:00.007
We're going to pray for an end of this pandemic.
00:56:00.528 --> 00:56:02.791
And then the prophet says, we've received that answer.
00:56:02.831 --> 00:56:04.454
And that answer is these vaccines.
00:56:05.516 --> 00:56:19.565
And then all of these church members say, who say, I sustain the prophet, and are mad at people like Jim Bennett for advocating for more inclusion in the church in ways they don't like.
00:56:21.246 --> 00:56:28.538
All these people suddenly turn around and say, oh, he's only speaking as a man, or worse, he's a fallen prophet.
00:56:29.179 --> 00:56:30.360
He's an apostasy.
00:56:31.001 --> 00:56:33.965
How dare he say that we should take the vaccine?
00:56:34.806 --> 00:56:43.594
What they learned from that, what church leaders learned from that experience, I think is a lesson that is hurting us today.
00:56:43.755 --> 00:56:51.764
And that lesson is, if we say things that go against church members' politics, they're not going to follow them.
00:56:53.085 --> 00:57:04.077
And if we say things continually that church members don't follow, we're going to look weak, we're going to look ineffective, and so we need to not do that.
00:57:05.121 --> 00:57:18.476
I fear that that's one of the lessons they took from the pandemic is, yeah, this contingent of church members who are tithe payers and who are in other ways faithful.
00:57:18.677 --> 00:57:20.099
I mean, they fulfill callings.
00:57:20.719 --> 00:57:24.402
And these aren't just church goers.
00:57:24.483 --> 00:57:25.184
These are bishops.
00:57:25.244 --> 00:57:26.326
These are stake presidents.
00:57:27.065 --> 00:57:30.030
These are people on every level of the church.
00:57:30.170 --> 00:57:43.699
And they're people who, in most ways, are considered the most faithful members of the church, but their loyalty to the church is trumped by Trump.
00:57:44.920 --> 00:57:52.027
It's trumped by their loyalty to their political agenda, and that's more important to them.
00:57:52.849 --> 00:58:03.391
And I think the church leaders know damn well that if they were to come out against the evil that Trump is doing.
00:58:03.510 --> 00:58:05.893
Not just the bad politics that Trump is doing.
00:58:05.954 --> 00:58:08.876
We've had bad politics in every administration.
00:58:08.956 --> 00:58:10.579
We can survive bad politics.
00:58:11.039 --> 00:58:20.710
We can't survive pervasive and relentless pursuit of evil, which is what Donald Trump is doing.
00:58:20.750 --> 00:58:24.855
And it's what the United States is becoming.
00:58:24.934 --> 00:58:35.969
We have forfeited our role as leader of the free world and we are Allying ourselves with the bad guys, which makes us one of the bad guys.
00:58:36.048 --> 00:58:51.972
There's an old saying that if 14 people are at dinner with one Nazi and they don't stand up against him, then it's a dinner with 14 Nazis.
00:58:53.775 --> 00:58:58.623
If we just stay silent, if we don't stand up against it, we are complicit with it.
00:58:59.184 --> 00:59:00.405
And right now the church...
00:59:00.961 --> 00:59:05.226
and church leaders, frankly, are complicit with the Trump agenda.
00:59:05.887 --> 00:59:07.528
And the Trump agenda is evil.
00:59:08.630 --> 00:59:10.532
And there's really no way around that.
00:59:10.853 --> 00:59:13.715
I mean, there's no escape clause.
00:59:14.155 --> 00:59:18.601
There's no way that we can slough off our accountability for it.
00:59:19.202 --> 00:59:24.146
You know, when the church does something wrong, I used to say the church needs to do this.
00:59:24.327 --> 00:59:27.751
The church needs to do that as if the church were something separate from me.
00:59:28.731 --> 00:59:31.824
And now I recognize We need to do this.
00:59:32.244 --> 00:59:33.365
I am the church.
00:59:33.585 --> 00:59:34.628
I am part of the church.
00:59:34.748 --> 00:59:47.644
As long as I am inside the church, then if I stay in the church, I bear some measure of responsibility for anything the church does, which pains me when the church does things that I don't like.
00:59:48.485 --> 00:59:53.572
Well, the reality is we are now in the United States.
00:59:54.434 --> 00:59:59.942
We are complicit if we do not stand up against this evil man.
01:00:00.385 --> 01:00:01.527
this evil agenda.
01:00:02.409 --> 01:00:05.612
And I don't want the church to be complicit, but I fear that we are.
01:00:05.632 --> 01:00:09.559
And we need to not be.
01:00:09.599 --> 01:00:18.090
What is the point of all of these things that we are taught on a weekly, daily basis?
01:00:18.891 --> 01:00:20.934
We're supposed to study the scriptures daily.
01:00:20.954 --> 01:00:23.378
We pray daily.
01:00:24.034 --> 01:00:30.639
And we go to church and we receive instruction about how to be better disciples of Jesus Christ.
01:00:31.460 --> 01:00:53.822
What is the point of all of that if when the overwhelming evidence is that we are following somebody who is anti-Christ, who is opposed to the principles that we are taught on a daily basis, then what is the point of what we're taught if we're not able to use that?
01:00:54.242 --> 01:00:55.903
to stand up to evil.
01:00:56.864 --> 01:00:58.126
And so that's where I am.
01:00:58.266 --> 01:01:02.670
That's where this, it's not even that this is a tangent.
01:01:03.291 --> 01:01:10.079
This is front and center of, for me, front and center for the moral future of the church.
01:01:11.501 --> 01:01:23.353
If we think we can just ride this out and not raise a peep and keep our heads down and hope it goes away, we are in for a dreadful reckoning.
01:01:24.130 --> 01:01:25.251
somewhere down the road.
01:01:25.791 --> 01:01:27.012
It's already starting.
01:01:27.032 --> 01:01:28.614
It's already here.
01:01:29.115 --> 01:01:30.476
We are already seeing.
01:01:30.516 --> 01:01:33.159
The church is in Ukraine.
01:01:33.960 --> 01:01:39.608
The church has members in Ukraine and we are now essentially abandoning them.
01:01:40.528 --> 01:01:55.012
We are now saying, you know, go ahead, Donald Trump, align with the axis of evil and let's strip mine Ukraine for parts and hand it over to a dictator and allow him to do what he will.
01:01:55.773 --> 01:02:00.217
And we're just standing by and letting that happen, which means we're complicit with it.
01:02:01.018 --> 01:02:06.483
I just don't think we can stress this enough.
01:02:06.702 --> 01:02:16.293
I don't think that there is enough outrage, that there is enough fury that we can express in opposition to this.
01:02:17.514 --> 01:02:23.831
I just think we need, if the church as a whole is not going to raise its voice against this evil.
01:02:25.373 --> 01:02:27.317
You and I are going to do our part to do it.
01:02:28.077 --> 01:02:29.920
And I'm not going to back down from it.
01:02:31.123 --> 01:02:32.284
I'm going to continue to do it.
01:02:33.547 --> 01:02:42.360
It's ended, you know, I have a lot of people who talk about, you realize you've ended any chance you ever have of holding political office.
01:02:43.221 --> 01:02:44.302
And I said, yes, I do.
01:02:44.563 --> 01:02:45.445
I absolutely do.
01:02:46.065 --> 01:02:47.568
I realize that ship has sailed.
01:02:47.648 --> 01:02:50.012
I realize that that's not in my future.
01:02:51.253 --> 01:03:00.177
But For that to be in my future, I would have to somehow be complicit with evil.
01:03:01.260 --> 01:03:09.108
I look at the representatives in Utah who are Latter-day Saints, who do this kind of hand-wringing, oh, yeah, this probably isn't right.
01:03:09.128 --> 01:03:11.769
I mean, I look at John Curtis, senator from Utah.
01:03:11.891 --> 01:03:15.795
I ran against John Curtis as a member of the United Utah Party when he first ran for Congress.
01:03:16.514 --> 01:03:18.697
I only got 9.4% of the vote, but...
01:03:19.137 --> 01:03:20.599
I got to know John Curtis.
01:03:20.701 --> 01:03:22.362
I had several conversations with him.
01:03:22.483 --> 01:03:23.626
I consider him a good man.
01:03:23.646 --> 01:03:26.110
And he used to be a Democrat.
01:03:26.811 --> 01:03:29.916
And he decided he was never going to win an office as a Democrat.
01:03:29.956 --> 01:03:31.097
So he became a Republican.
01:03:31.679 --> 01:03:32.521
And he ran for office.
01:03:32.561 --> 01:03:33.702
He ran for Congress and won.
01:03:33.742 --> 01:03:35.184
And now he's run for the Senate.
01:03:35.324 --> 01:03:36.827
He's replaced Mitt Romney in the Senate.
01:03:36.947 --> 01:03:41.335
And a lot of people look to him as, okay, well, will you have the same conscience Mitt Romney did?
01:03:41.375 --> 01:03:42.858
And the answer is no.
01:03:43.554 --> 01:03:44.956
The answer is absolutely no.
01:03:45.559 --> 01:03:48.806
He said, oh, jeez, I'm worried about these crazy things RFK Jr.
01:03:48.865 --> 01:03:52.635
said about vaccines, and I'm worried about some of these other nominees.
01:03:53.135 --> 01:03:55.882
And then he went ahead and voted for all of them.
01:03:55.902 --> 01:04:03.278
And he hasn't issued any statement condemning the UN resolution vote, he's just going along for the ride.
01:04:03.599 --> 01:04:18.958
And he's doing that because he knows that if he doesn't do that, his constituents, the majority of whom are Latter-day Saints, will vote him out of office because what Trump is doing is what a majority of American Latter-day Saints want.
01:04:19.760 --> 01:04:20.981
And that's obscene to me.
01:04:21.523 --> 01:04:23.204
That's absolutely obscene to me.
01:04:23.865 --> 01:04:28.940
And as long as I can speak out against it, I am going to do that.
01:04:29.119 --> 01:04:33.126
So I very much appreciate you, Ian, participating.
01:04:33.186 --> 01:04:36.150
And I very much appreciate you raising this as the topic.
01:04:37.172 --> 01:04:45.704
And if listeners are frustrated by this or bored by this, we'll probably turn off quite a few people.
01:04:45.744 --> 01:04:49.530
At this point, you have to make a decision.
01:04:49.570 --> 01:04:51.693
You have to take sides.
01:04:52.289 --> 01:04:59.139
Joseph Smith once said, once you enlist in the gospel of Jesus Christ, you leave neutral ground forever.
01:05:00.121 --> 01:05:05.947
And he was talking about the church, but there is a wider principle there that I think applies.
01:05:08.371 --> 01:05:16.202
There is no neutral ground left in this global battle of good versus evil.
01:05:17.262 --> 01:05:21.929
And it is painfully clear which side Donald Trump is on.
01:05:22.626 --> 01:05:31.362
And if you think you can just stay neutral, stay quiet, and ride it out, you are on the side.
01:05:31.402 --> 01:05:34.728
You are not neutral.
01:05:35.449 --> 01:05:38.534
You are on the side of evil, and there's no way around that.
01:05:39.335 --> 01:05:44.585
So I don't know if that's too harsh, but that's where I am, and that's where I'm going to continue to be.
01:05:45.090 --> 01:05:45.851
And that's okay.
01:05:45.871 --> 01:05:54.864
And again, these are very, very serious, important things, and I know many of our listeners will feel strongly about these things either way, and that's okay.
01:05:56.547 --> 01:06:02.576
I appreciate you raising the fact that there are church members in Ukraine, and what is the church saying to them right now?
01:06:02.596 --> 01:06:05.260
You know, what's the church, especially after the vote?
01:06:06.643 --> 01:06:15.623
The church teaches that before the world was, there was a council in heaven, and two plans were put forward to God, one by Lucifer, who are my Jesus Christ.
01:06:16.563 --> 01:06:20.528
And two-thirds of us chose Jesus Christ's plan, the plan of salvation.
01:06:21.369 --> 01:06:28.398
And Lucifer, with the third of the hosts of heaven, and that plan, which was rejected, was cast down.
01:06:28.438 --> 01:06:31.541
And we went with Jesus Christ.
01:06:32.001 --> 01:06:32.523
We voted.
01:06:32.682 --> 01:06:33.362
There was a decision.
01:06:33.523 --> 01:06:34.344
We took a position.
01:06:34.744 --> 01:06:35.445
We took a stand.
01:06:35.465 --> 01:06:40.492
A few closing remarks here.
01:06:40.592 --> 01:06:42.554
I want to share this with you.
01:06:43.233 --> 01:06:46.478
As I was listening, I found this.
01:06:46.518 --> 01:06:48.420
It's a lesson.
01:06:48.440 --> 01:06:54.385
It's a lesson in the church lesson books, and it's dated August 23.
01:06:54.405 --> 01:06:57.650
I think it's one of the gospel study lessons.
01:06:57.989 --> 01:07:00.693
It's titled, Why We Should Speak Up for Truth.
01:07:01.213 --> 01:07:01.713
Listen to this.
01:07:02.896 --> 01:07:10.824
We merely have to watch the daily news or look around us to see that society is degrading rapidly.
01:07:11.344 --> 01:07:11.664
This is...
01:07:12.802 --> 01:07:13.483
80 months ago.
01:07:13.503 --> 01:07:19.971
It can become soul-numbing, and many of us may be tempted to just withdraw and keep quiet.
01:07:20.851 --> 01:07:23.876
But the law's discretion, direction rather, is clear.
01:07:24.737 --> 01:07:26.219
We are expected to speak up.
01:07:27.119 --> 01:07:29.003
We are expected to be a warning voice.
01:07:29.844 --> 01:07:37.572
We are expected to defend the truth in a world that increasingly does not want to hear or accept the truth.
01:07:38.954 --> 01:07:53.565
Elder Ballard said this in the lesson, The time has come when members of the church need to speak out and join with the many other concerned people in opposition to the offensive, destructive, and mean-spirited media influence that is swooping over the earth.
01:07:53.585 --> 01:07:58.373
So that's something that Elder Ballard felt strongly about, enough for him to be quoted in the lesson.
01:07:58.833 --> 01:08:05.043
You don't put your apostle quotes in without the apostle knowing about it, surely, in a standard gospel lesson, right?
01:08:05.724 --> 01:08:08.210
Elder Ballard would have known about this, that he's being quoted.
01:08:08.769 --> 01:08:11.873
And he says, so that's Elder Ballard, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
01:08:12.474 --> 01:08:25.091
At a religious study symposium in California, Elder Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a group of Germany during World War II, talked about a visit he and his wife made to Auschwitz, a former concentration camp established in German-occupied Poland.
01:08:25.131 --> 01:08:28.355
By the way, I'm going to Auschwitz in April and May, by the way, Jim.
01:08:30.238 --> 01:08:38.470
Elder Uchtdorf says this, I wonder how history might have been changed had the people of Germany spoken with one voice against the evil that arose around them.
01:08:39.137 --> 01:08:43.163
Elder Uchtdorf is saying this, perhaps future generations will ask the same of us today.
01:08:43.184 --> 01:08:57.203
As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to know truth and to have the influence of the Holy Ghost to help us recognize the difference between truth and error.
01:08:58.064 --> 01:09:15.197
When we use these gifts to speak, our influence for good will grow and our profound impacts to often evil risers in the world because good men and women do not find the courage to speak against it, said Elder Uchtdorf.
01:09:15.738 --> 01:09:26.253
He goes on to say, as sometimes terrible, preventable, terrible, preventable events happen because we fail to open our mouths.
01:09:28.016 --> 01:09:31.743
He then finishes his comment by saying, so how do we speak up for what's right?
01:09:32.824 --> 01:09:36.289
That's from the church lesson material right on the church website.
01:09:36.833 --> 01:09:39.556
August 23, titled Speaking Up the Truth.
01:09:40.158 --> 01:09:41.979
Why doesn't President Nelson read this lesson?
01:09:43.001 --> 01:09:43.421
Follow it.
01:09:44.483 --> 01:09:49.548
So if President Nelson or anyone is connected to President Nelson right now, listen to these words.
01:09:49.868 --> 01:09:55.475
I'm not trying to be overconfident here or arrogant.
01:09:56.457 --> 01:10:04.286
But if you're hearing this message, for goodness sake, for the sake of goodness, follow this lesson.
01:10:04.706 --> 01:10:12.157
Follow the advice from Elder Uchtdorf and Elder Ballard and speak up and speak out and say something.
01:10:12.438 --> 01:10:12.797
Anything.
01:10:14.100 --> 01:10:14.921
Do the right thing.
01:10:15.622 --> 01:10:16.264
Comment on it.
01:10:16.484 --> 01:10:17.985
Do something, for goodness sake.
01:10:19.569 --> 01:10:24.877
And defend the right and speak up against evil.
01:10:25.037 --> 01:10:28.442
Follow your own basic fundamental principles.
01:10:29.063 --> 01:10:29.363
Please.
01:10:30.604 --> 01:10:30.746
I...
01:10:31.329 --> 01:10:36.496
hope that someone in our listeners will pass this on to the president.
01:10:37.055 --> 01:10:38.778
Now is the time to do this.
01:10:38.837 --> 01:10:41.320
Is there ever a time to stand up and speak about something?
01:10:41.341 --> 01:10:42.421
Ever.
01:10:43.403 --> 01:10:46.626
And there's been many times where the church hasn't, and times when it has.
01:10:47.407 --> 01:10:58.099
Now is the time to do something, to say something, and not, as we heard in the lesson here, to be silent and to be quiet.
01:10:58.759 --> 01:11:00.822
And all around us, all these things are happening.
01:11:01.345 --> 01:11:03.609
Like you, Jim, I feel so strongly about this.
01:11:03.649 --> 01:11:12.939
If we don't live like this, if we don't live for integrity, Elder Bednar talks about integrity, by the way, a lot.
01:11:14.362 --> 01:11:15.944
We're a church of integrity.
01:11:15.963 --> 01:11:16.484
He says that.
01:11:17.426 --> 01:11:18.667
Integrity is so important to him.
01:11:19.868 --> 01:11:26.877
Well, let's have the integrity and the decency to do something, to say something, to speak up.
01:11:28.680 --> 01:11:30.221
And don't leave it.
01:11:30.402 --> 01:11:32.243
to members of the church guessing.
01:11:32.323 --> 01:11:33.204
Let's not be cowards.
01:11:33.265 --> 01:11:33.904
Let's speak up.
01:11:34.305 --> 01:11:41.351
We might not carry opinion with us, with people, but at least we're speaking our truth and we're being honest.
01:11:42.753 --> 01:11:47.877
And if we can't be that, Jim, in life, if we can't be like that in life, what are we, really?
01:11:48.618 --> 01:12:00.894
You know, when Elder Oak set me apart with the state presidency and we had those interviews at training, he asked us, speaking in the calling, not just in life, but in the calling, as well.
01:12:01.395 --> 01:12:02.837
How do you want to be remembered?
01:12:03.497 --> 01:12:06.600
That was his question to us as a new state presidency.
01:12:06.740 --> 01:12:07.681
How do you want to be remembered?
01:12:08.323 --> 01:12:11.286
Not just as in this life, but also as a presidency.
01:12:12.146 --> 01:12:16.171
And so I would ask President Nelson, how do you want to be remembered?
01:12:17.313 --> 01:12:25.221
When all these things are happening in the world and you're there silent, not saying anything, not speaking up, people will remember this.
01:12:25.882 --> 01:12:26.643
I will remember this.
01:12:27.583 --> 01:12:29.639
Please have the courage Do something.
01:12:29.698 --> 01:12:30.239
Say something.
01:12:30.659 --> 01:12:32.262
Follow the lesson material right here.
01:12:33.323 --> 01:12:34.926
I'm grateful for this conversation.
01:12:34.966 --> 01:12:36.108
Felt so strongly about it.
01:12:37.050 --> 01:12:38.231
And I appreciate your comments.
01:12:39.012 --> 01:12:39.953
I have nothing else to say.
01:12:39.974 --> 01:12:41.657
I think I'm going to go off my chest.
01:12:41.716 --> 01:12:43.680
I want to thank our listeners for being incredibly patient.
01:12:44.801 --> 01:12:47.546
And we may have lost some of them throughout this conversation.
01:12:47.565 --> 01:12:49.007
I don't know.
01:12:49.047 --> 01:12:52.353
We try to be respectful and kind and courteous.
01:12:53.054 --> 01:12:54.234
We feel so strongly about this.
01:12:54.555 --> 01:12:58.421
Do you have any final comments or thoughts, Jim, at your end before we close?
01:12:59.010 --> 01:12:59.770
I do not.
01:13:00.391 --> 01:13:02.636
Only to say amen and amen to what you've just
01:13:02.655 --> 01:13:02.856
said.
01:13:03.557 --> 01:13:03.978
Thank you.
01:13:04.099 --> 01:13:07.484
Well, to you, Jim, thank you so much for being part of this conversation.
01:13:07.645 --> 01:13:14.515
I really am grateful for your just openness and transparency and just speaking from the heart.
01:13:14.737 --> 01:13:15.797
And I know that you've done that.
01:13:16.520 --> 01:13:17.140
I've done that.
01:13:17.400 --> 01:13:18.582
I've tried to do that as well.
01:13:18.622 --> 01:13:22.409
I'm grateful for our listeners, for their patience and understanding.
01:13:23.010 --> 01:13:24.912
We try to keep that balance.
01:13:25.073 --> 01:13:26.595
The church does extraordinarily good.
01:13:26.614 --> 01:13:30.501
And you know when the church stands up and speaks up on things, I think that's great.
01:13:31.122 --> 01:13:31.563
I really do.
01:13:31.582 --> 01:13:35.328
And let's hope that it will do so on this occasion.
01:13:35.809 --> 01:13:36.369
Thank you to you.
01:13:36.390 --> 01:13:37.091
Thank you to our listeners.
01:13:37.832 --> 01:13:44.483
And we look forward to meeting with all the listeners sometime next week.
01:13:45.323 --> 01:13:48.628
And in the meantime, we wish you the best and that you're all safe.
01:13:49.369 --> 01:13:50.972
And we express our love and appreciation to you all.
01:13:51.033 --> 01:13:51.713
Thank you for listening.
01:13:52.162 --> 01:13:55.314
And that's it for this week's Inside Out.
01:13:55.697 --> 01:13:56.198
Thank you, everybody.
01:13:56.259 --> 01:13:57.262
And thank you to you, Jim.
01:13:58.046 --> 01:13:58.689
Thank you, William.
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.739
Hello and welcome to the latest episode of Inside Out.
00:00:19.039 --> 00:00:20.321
My name is Ian Wilkes.
00:00:21.001 --> 00:00:24.565
I'm here with the magnanimous Mr.
00:00:24.705 --> 00:00:25.567
Jim Bennett.
00:00:26.969 --> 00:00:27.710
Hello.
00:00:28.513 --> 00:00:35.408
I magnanimously welcome you as well to this latest episode because that's how magnanimous I am.
00:00:35.850 --> 00:00:37.654
You are certainly magnanimous, for sure.
00:00:37.893 --> 00:00:41.462
And I'm going to do a lot more research on big words.
00:00:41.902 --> 00:00:46.753
In the future, I'm going to come with some big words and I...
00:00:47.905 --> 00:00:51.832
I'd be interested to see if you will know what those words are to describe you.
00:00:52.212 --> 00:00:59.061
So, because you're very good at the big words, and I thought I was good, but I need to do a little bit of training there, a little bit of research in there.
00:00:59.482 --> 00:01:02.447
And we'll continue to have fun describing each other with these big words.
00:01:02.887 --> 00:01:04.549
Chip, it's so good to be with you.
00:01:04.850 --> 00:01:07.034
I always look forward to these conversations.
00:01:08.215 --> 00:01:12.701
What drives me is, you know, the need to help others, right?
00:01:12.930 --> 00:01:15.373
in some way, in some form, in some fashion.
00:01:15.953 --> 00:01:22.283
I'm encouraged by the response we get from many of our listeners that the podcasts that we're doing are helpful in some form.
00:01:23.465 --> 00:01:32.218
We try to stay on track in terms of, you know, dealing with the church issues and the doctrine and the history and low social aspects of the church.
00:01:32.897 --> 00:01:41.206
And of course, sometimes we move slightly outside of the main periphery of our scope of our podcast, which I think is also very good.
00:01:41.828 --> 00:01:50.658
And at times we talk about politics and we talk about politics because, and world affairs, because these things are important to us personally and our families.
00:01:51.739 --> 00:02:00.769
And we have people in our friendships and in our work who also have strong opinions on politics and religion.
00:02:01.346 --> 00:02:02.266
And it's important.
00:02:02.787 --> 00:02:09.718
I think it's important to be able to have these conversations about the relationship between the church and politics and what's going on in the world.
00:02:11.040 --> 00:02:15.146
And it's important to have civil discourse, to be respectful, be kind.
00:02:15.187 --> 00:02:16.169
We're not going to agree on everything.
00:02:16.209 --> 00:02:22.838
There's, you know, across all this is probably a wide band of political views and thoughts.
00:02:22.859 --> 00:02:23.539
And that's great.
00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:32.491
I think it's important to have your own views, whether you're Republican or Democrat, whether you're Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, like in the UK.
00:02:32.733 --> 00:02:33.913
You can hold any view you want.
00:02:34.414 --> 00:02:37.139
We live in mostly a free world, not entirely.
00:02:37.179 --> 00:02:43.367
We'll talk about that, I think, on the podcast and what's going on there, about freedom, liberty and family.
00:02:43.448 --> 00:02:44.650
I'm looking forward to getting into that.
00:02:45.110 --> 00:02:56.751
But it's important, I think, to, if you feel so strongly as I do and you do about certain things, things that are going on in the world, then it's important to be able to talk about that and understand that in the context of the church.
00:02:57.451 --> 00:03:00.918
And we've said repeatedly that there are major events happening in the world.
00:03:01.277 --> 00:03:14.778
You know, Ukraine, the Middle East, you know, North Korea, Iran, you know, UK, major issues in the UK in terms of social challenges, a lot of issues in the US.
00:03:14.799 --> 00:03:16.600
We have big issues here in Canada.
00:03:17.250 --> 00:03:21.556
There's a lot of the issues that we talk about span the world.
00:03:21.596 --> 00:03:26.762
They're not just unique to these countries, but they affect the world like immigration, economy, jobs.
00:03:27.644 --> 00:03:32.370
These are things that impact people on a very serious and a very personal level.
00:03:33.010 --> 00:03:44.765
And I have strong feelings like you and many others do on certain things, especially when it impacts global events happen and how that impacts people.
00:03:45.122 --> 00:03:48.507
us here locally in Canada or in the US or anywhere.
00:03:48.526 --> 00:03:52.932
So these are significant events and occurrences happening in the world.
00:03:53.473 --> 00:03:56.799
And I still, even though I'm outside the church, I look to the church.
00:03:56.959 --> 00:04:05.471
I look to the church leadership to have a position on certain things, to come out and speak up about really important things that are going on.
00:04:06.051 --> 00:04:09.896
And there's something happened recently that really, really bothers me.
00:04:10.237 --> 00:04:21.274
And as I said earlier before we did this podcast, With the Trump administration, I think I got to the point where I was saying to myself, nothing surprises me anymore.
00:04:22.555 --> 00:04:28.586
And I wake up the next day or into the next day, and lo and behold, something has happened.
00:04:29.067 --> 00:04:33.814
And it's actually shocked me or surprised me.
00:04:34.795 --> 00:04:37.220
And so the one thing I want to...
00:04:37.761 --> 00:04:40.365
Looking forward to having this conversation with you about...
00:04:40.898 --> 00:04:55.225
is something that happened uh in the last um in the last couple days so uh you know the trump administration is into what how many weeks now is it four five weeks now
00:04:56.548 --> 00:05:00.355
uh january 20th again it's about a month or a
00:05:00.375 --> 00:05:10.536
little more a little more than a month so trump uh came into that position in its entirety about a month ago.
00:05:10.675 --> 00:05:11.637
And a lot's happened.
00:05:11.757 --> 00:05:12.459
I'm sure you'll agree.
00:05:12.478 --> 00:05:15.863
A lot has happened in the last month or so.
00:05:15.884 --> 00:05:27.843
And, you know, a lot of that, those decisions, a lot of those actions have impacted the United States significantly.
00:05:28.444 --> 00:05:31.668
Certainly impacting us appearing in Canada, like the tariffs, for example.
00:05:31.689 --> 00:05:54.824
That's a big topic right now with Mexico and Canada and all these tariffs and there's other decisions that are affecting the United States population but there are decisions that have been made that are affecting the relationships between America and the rest of the world and again I want to highlight the need for my hope that The church has some position.
00:05:54.865 --> 00:06:02.701
The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is, as they claim, is the only true church upon the face of the earth and in regular contact with God.
00:06:02.742 --> 00:06:14.206
And presumably, God is watching what's going on in the world and has an opinion, a thought even, an idea, a suggestion, something to say.
00:06:14.786 --> 00:06:19.833
to the prophet, President Nelson, on the earth about what the heck is going on in the world.
00:06:20.434 --> 00:06:35.274
So what is, and I asked you if we could talk about this today because I feel so strongly and even if I have, I hope our listeners will get some of this, but I really do, but I know it will make me feel better to get certain things off my chest.
00:06:35.954 --> 00:06:39.199
And so recently there's been a United Nations vote.
00:06:39.540 --> 00:06:45.682
I want to talk about the Ukraine situation as the thing that's really important unhinged me.
00:06:45.884 --> 00:06:46.584
I'll use that word.
00:06:46.625 --> 00:06:52.733
I feel unhinged right now because America has done something that I did not expect.
00:06:53.274 --> 00:06:58.040
And I'm quite shocked and very shocked and stunned, actually.
00:06:58.762 --> 00:07:22.617
So the US, in a recent series of United Nations votes on condemning Russia for its illegal and naked aggression against Ukraine and invading Ukraine three years ago, almost three years ago and a few days, where a vote was tabled to condemn Russia's actions and aggression.
00:07:23.899 --> 00:07:32.935
The U.S., in these two key votes, certainly, sided with Russia in the United Nations to mark this third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
00:07:34.377 --> 00:07:39.485
And it also highlights Trump's position changes on the stance of the wall.
00:07:40.098 --> 00:07:51.670
First, the first one was that the US opposed a European-drafted resolution condemning Russia's actions and supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity.
00:07:52.612 --> 00:08:01.343
America voted the same way as Russia and other countries, including North Korea and Belarus, at the United Nations General Assembly.
00:08:01.442 --> 00:08:02.163
That was in New York.
00:08:03.064 --> 00:08:12.122
Then the US drafted and voted for a resolution at the United Nations Security Council, which called for an end to the conflict, but contained no criticism of Russia.
00:08:13.384 --> 00:08:20.853
And of course, the Security Council passed the resolution, but two key US allies, UK and France, abstained after their attempts to amend the wording.
00:08:21.713 --> 00:08:29.502
The main one for me was the motion that was tabled to condemn Russia's actions.
00:08:30.584 --> 00:08:53.999
And for me, based on reliable, trusted information, verifiable, trusted, not misinformation or disinformation, but reliable information that Russia did in fact invade Ukraine illegally, breaking all international rules, invaded a sovereign nation without provocation.
00:08:54.559 --> 00:08:55.441
There's another conversation.
00:08:55.461 --> 00:08:57.583
I can argue against that if you want.
00:08:58.284 --> 00:09:01.950
But it took the act to invade Ukraine.
00:09:02.145 --> 00:09:11.960
And we've seen extraordinary death and destruction from that decision, from the act.
00:09:12.259 --> 00:09:13.461
It's been going on for three years.
00:09:14.363 --> 00:09:18.288
On both sides, there's been hundreds of thousands of deaths.
00:09:20.471 --> 00:09:21.152
Unnecessary.
00:09:21.653 --> 00:09:22.413
Could have been avoided.
00:09:22.975 --> 00:09:24.336
But Russia, because of its...
00:09:25.197 --> 00:09:26.639
And Putin's personal...
00:09:29.025 --> 00:09:40.336
aspirations, and I've researched this, that it's reliable to expand and reabsorb those countries back into the Russian Empire.
00:09:40.356 --> 00:09:41.898
Imperialism.
00:09:41.918 --> 00:09:44.500
Naked imperialism.
00:09:44.520 --> 00:09:51.147
Not to necessarily fight against NATO's expansion.
00:09:51.246 --> 00:09:53.649
That could be a part of it.
00:09:53.708 --> 00:09:54.649
I think it is a part of it.
00:09:55.150 --> 00:10:10.760
But based on my research, Putin is driven by by this idealistic approach of restoring Russia's greatness and seeing Ukraine historically as it was.
00:10:10.860 --> 00:10:27.422
I mean, I can understand this historical relationship or some of the between Ukraine and Russia and trying to recover Ukraine as a lost territory or geography that originally was part of Russia or part of Russia's culture.
00:10:27.522 --> 00:10:41.081
And the argument for doing that is all kinds of arguments, like destroying the Nazi influence there, protecting Russian-speaking individuals in Ukraine, etc.
00:10:41.100 --> 00:10:58.229
There may or may not be some truth to that, but Putin's main focus is to expand and reabsorb and expand the Russian influence there by taking over Ukraine, and he won't stop there.
00:10:58.249 --> 00:11:10.443
Trump thinks it's about land, thinks that we can solve this by concessions, by giving land, but Putin's ambitions are greater than just land.
00:11:10.604 --> 00:11:18.394
It's absorbing the entire country, its culture, its people, and its land back into the fold.
00:11:19.115 --> 00:11:36.054
And so it took this decision to invade Ukraine, The world, most of the world at that time, except for North Korea, Russia, of course, Tehran, Iran, and Belarus, condemned and continue to condemn Putin's decision, Russia's actions there.
00:11:36.775 --> 00:11:44.546
And so this opportunity, especially on the anniversary of the third year, again, all these thousands of people have died.
00:11:44.765 --> 00:11:50.854
And by the way, Russia kidnapped, physically, children and took them into Russia.
00:11:51.073 --> 00:11:52.235
That has been verified.
00:11:53.096 --> 00:12:11.798
And breaking rules around war and using bombs and munitions that they're not supposed to, and in some cases, allegations of chemical weapons, albeit on a small scale, which, again, that needs to be investigated.
00:12:12.239 --> 00:12:21.582
So absolutely terrible, awful, illegal actions destruction caused by the decision.
00:12:22.384 --> 00:12:29.715
And an opportunity over the last few days to condemn Russia for its decisions and its actions.
00:12:30.716 --> 00:12:39.349
And now we have America who is now sided essentially with Russia and with North Korea and with Belarus.
00:12:40.309 --> 00:12:42.072
And I just can't believe that.
00:12:42.493 --> 00:12:48.638
And so That shocks me, but also equally as shocking is where's the church on this?
00:12:49.639 --> 00:12:50.600
Where's the leadership?
00:12:50.721 --> 00:12:52.602
Does the church have an opinion on this?
00:12:53.384 --> 00:12:55.368
You know, what's the right thing to do?
00:12:55.408 --> 00:12:59.192
Is it to stand up and speak up and speak out as the church?
00:12:59.793 --> 00:13:03.279
They say, no, we condemn Russia's actions.
00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:10.811
We do not agree with the president of the United States of America who's sided with Russia.
00:13:11.511 --> 00:13:12.693
Where's the church on this?
00:13:12.994 --> 00:13:19.422
What about the principles in the Book of Mormon on freedom, liberty, family, for doing the right thing?
00:13:19.442 --> 00:13:34.519
I did a little bit of research and there is extensive material that the church has to protect religious freedom, to protect the basic freedoms of people and the rights of people and to respect human rights.
00:13:35.220 --> 00:13:39.926
The church is an amazing organization at speaking up for stuff like that.
00:13:40.546 --> 00:13:47.977
and going to these different events and organizations and promoting the need and value of freedoms, including religious freedoms.
00:13:48.739 --> 00:13:56.890
And as the mouthpiece of the earth, President Nelson, what is God saying to President Nelson on this?
00:13:57.712 --> 00:14:01.698
Does God have an opinion as he communicated that to President Nelson?
00:14:02.740 --> 00:14:04.884
Where's the church leadership position on this?
00:14:05.585 --> 00:14:13.177
Why can't we speak up and condemn this decision by the President of the United States, who represents, obviously, America.
00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:33.057
You could tell in my tone I feel very angry, actually, upset and disappointed, because it's, you know, by being silent, you know, we are, the Church says if you're silent, then you're actually, you're part of the, you know, you're part of the decision.
00:14:33.077 --> 00:14:36.181
You condone it in some way, or you're not disagreeing with it.
00:14:36.902 --> 00:14:42.206
So, Anyway, I appreciate being able to get this off my chest, vent this.
00:14:43.128 --> 00:14:45.890
Would love to get your opinion on this and what you think is going on.
00:14:46.851 --> 00:14:54.961
We try our best to remain focused on the scope of the Inside Out, to focus predominantly on the church.
00:14:55.461 --> 00:15:00.886
But of course, politics, global affairs, they impact us, they impact the church.
00:15:01.508 --> 00:15:10.413
And the church, and I'll close my opening comments on this, the church must, should, have a position on these issues.
00:15:11.394 --> 00:15:20.649
And I'm hoping that we'll hear from the president of the church in due course, that we will read something or see something, even in a press release.
00:15:21.149 --> 00:15:24.033
Anyway, you've been very patient with my opening remarks.
00:15:24.073 --> 00:15:28.900
I'll stop and hand the time over and ask you, do you feel as strong as I do?
00:15:30.123 --> 00:15:31.985
Am I completely out to lunch here?
00:15:32.004 --> 00:15:34.808
Are my feelings misplaced?
00:15:35.029 --> 00:15:37.364
Do I feels so strong unnecessarily.
00:15:37.403 --> 00:15:44.393
But what are your thoughts on this and in respect to the church taking a position on some of this stuff?
00:15:47.035 --> 00:15:48.077
Well, I have many.
00:15:48.097 --> 00:15:54.264
And I don't think that this is outside the scope of this podcast.
00:15:54.485 --> 00:16:01.114
As I've talked many times about when we've talked about Trump, it's not just to express political opinions.
00:16:02.355 --> 00:16:14.438
It's to, as you describe, demonstrate what kind of impact this is having on the church and also on the faith of people in the church.
00:16:16.802 --> 00:16:21.489
Trump every day is a trial of my faith.
00:16:22.932 --> 00:16:34.590
He's not just an odious, terrible, dictator-like authoritarian leader, and he is all of those things.
00:16:35.553 --> 00:16:57.000
But he is a trial of my faith because I believe this is the church of Jesus Christ and I've been taught all my life that we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost at the age of eight when we are confirmed members of the church, that we have a unique spirit of discernment that the rest of the world does not have.
00:16:57.019 --> 00:17:07.724
And if that's true, how is it possible that we could have thrown in in such large numbers with such a terrible, odious man.
00:17:07.765 --> 00:17:29.169
And so it continues to be a trial of my faith that my fellow Latter-day Saints not only are not disturbed by this, but they applaud this, that they are embracing this, that they see Trump as a manifestation of God, not an enemy to him.
00:17:30.069 --> 00:17:39.944
When I think it's absolutely clear that he is an enemy to all things that are good, that he's an enemy to decency, to honesty, to integrity.
00:17:39.984 --> 00:17:51.259
All of the values that have been inculcated in me as a result of my membership in the church are values that Trump disdains and has absolutely no use for.
00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:58.607
So I just want to say, as you say, well, you know, we have to talk politics, and I know we usually talk about the church.
00:17:59.388 --> 00:18:01.171
To me, they are inseparable.
00:18:01.211 --> 00:18:06.093
You know, the Doctrine and Covenants talks about that The spiritual and the temporal are inseparable.
00:18:06.913 --> 00:18:26.619
In the case of Trump, I'd say the political and the religious are inseparable because the implications of the fact that Latter-day Saints see Trump positively and embrace and support him, that is a continuing trial of my faith on a daily basis.
00:18:27.500 --> 00:18:32.548
I got a text from my sister yesterday saying, oh, I really wish Dad were still here.
00:18:32.607 --> 00:18:33.930
My father were still here.
00:18:35.192 --> 00:18:37.875
Because somehow he might be able to make sense of this.
00:18:38.917 --> 00:18:40.138
And it's interesting.
00:18:40.180 --> 00:18:45.287
This is the first podcast you've recorded since I got back from Peru.
00:18:46.509 --> 00:18:51.115
I was in Peru for five days with the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square.
00:18:51.156 --> 00:18:53.279
And we performed.
00:18:53.299 --> 00:18:56.104
It was just a magnificent experience all the way around.
00:18:56.144 --> 00:18:59.690
And we performed in this massive stadium.
00:19:00.450 --> 00:19:10.444
that this Estadio Nacional right in Lima, Peru, and there were over 30,000 people that were in attendance.
00:19:10.545 --> 00:19:15.010
Many of them had lined up early in the day and standing in the summer heat.
00:19:15.271 --> 00:19:16.192
It's summer down there.
00:19:16.232 --> 00:19:24.404
And they were just a raucous and wonderfully appreciative crowd.
00:19:26.067 --> 00:19:28.151
I felt a little bit like I was a rock star.
00:19:28.211 --> 00:19:30.173
I felt like Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.
00:19:30.849 --> 00:19:32.413
It was just a lot of fun.
00:19:32.452 --> 00:19:36.883
But it was also interesting.
00:19:36.942 --> 00:19:38.807
We did two concerts when we were over there.
00:19:38.946 --> 00:19:46.061
One was the big concert on Saturday night, but the other one was a, they call it the VIP concert.
00:19:47.365 --> 00:19:49.970
And it was for Peruvian officials.
00:19:51.212 --> 00:20:00.192
And bigwigs, and I don't know the political structures of Peruvian government, but apparently a lot of the heavy hitters were in that room.
00:20:00.834 --> 00:20:05.539
But on the front row of that room were Mitt and Ann Romney.
00:20:06.942 --> 00:20:16.976
They had come, and my understanding is they are working with the church in terms of establishing relationships with governments internationally.
00:20:17.016 --> 00:20:19.740
And they were there the entire time.
00:20:19.759 --> 00:20:27.980
I only saw Mitt at that concert, but Ann Romney went on some of the sightseeing expeditions with the choir.
00:20:28.142 --> 00:20:30.064
And so they were there the entire time we were.
00:20:30.104 --> 00:20:38.433
And I was one of a handful of choir members that was selected to do kind of a meet and greet afterwards.
00:20:39.515 --> 00:20:43.200
And I had the opportunity to actually go shake Mitt Romney's hand.
00:20:43.721 --> 00:20:45.323
I've met him several times before.
00:20:45.343 --> 00:20:47.184
I reminded him of that.
00:20:47.704 --> 00:20:49.528
He acted like he remembered me.
00:20:50.107 --> 00:20:51.150
I'm pretty sure he didn't.
00:20:51.713 --> 00:20:52.414
But that's okay.
00:20:52.474 --> 00:20:53.036
I mean, he meets...
00:20:53.416 --> 00:20:57.523
My father always used to say, when you're in politics, you can never say, nice to meet you.
00:20:58.184 --> 00:21:02.532
Because then they will always say, I met you and I talked to you 14 years ago.
00:21:02.593 --> 00:21:03.173
Don't you remember?
00:21:03.213 --> 00:21:05.738
So Mitt was very gracious.
00:21:06.660 --> 00:21:07.961
And I told him a couple of things.
00:21:09.384 --> 00:21:13.771
One of the things I said to him was, I don't think you appreciate...
00:21:14.673 --> 00:21:16.877
I don't think you know how much...
00:21:18.625 --> 00:21:24.314
the Bennett family appreciated your vote to convict Trump in the first impeachment trial.
00:21:25.776 --> 00:21:31.523
Because that, when you did that, it felt like dad was still with us.
00:21:32.684 --> 00:21:39.375
It felt like that's something my father would have done and you had the courage to do it.
00:21:39.474 --> 00:21:48.575
And I told him, I consider that the greatest act of political courage I have seen or expect to see in my lifetime.
00:21:49.756 --> 00:21:51.557
And he seemed to be touched by that.
00:21:51.597 --> 00:21:54.480
And Anne was definitely touched by that.
00:21:54.621 --> 00:21:57.923
And she was willing to go off and say, I don't understand.
00:21:57.983 --> 00:22:00.886
Don't people realize this is wicked King Noah?
00:22:02.028 --> 00:22:03.809
Can't they see Trump for who he is?
00:22:03.829 --> 00:22:06.291
And Mitt was a bit more circumspect.
00:22:06.352 --> 00:22:16.001
I think he recognizes that anything he says, even privately, has the potential of showing up on the front page of the New York Times.
00:22:16.865 --> 00:22:21.232
But Mitt, you know, so I had that conversation with him.
00:22:22.575 --> 00:22:32.891
And what I got a sense of in Peru, oh, and the other thing that happened in Peru is we had a sacrament meeting right before we left.
00:22:34.133 --> 00:22:37.417
And Elder Suarez spoke of the Quorum of the Twelve.
00:22:37.478 --> 00:22:38.680
He was there the entire time.
00:22:38.720 --> 00:22:40.810
He came to the concert.
00:22:41.510 --> 00:22:44.634
The concert was narrated entirely in Spanish.
00:22:44.694 --> 00:22:46.817
Most of the songs we sang were in Spanish.
00:22:47.897 --> 00:22:54.305
And we had a teleprompter that had the words written out phonetically so that we wouldn't mispronounce them.
00:22:55.527 --> 00:23:17.489
But Elder Suarez gave a talk and I confess I was a little disappointed in Elder Suarez's talk because there was nothing in his talk that you and I and anybody that listens to General Conference or listens to Sunday School or whatever else it is, hasn't heard a million times before.
00:23:17.888 --> 00:23:20.471
I mean, it was very nice and pleasant talk.
00:23:21.031 --> 00:23:24.315
And I had somebody say, oh, aren't we blessed to have an apostle speak to us?
00:23:24.394 --> 00:23:26.457
And I'm like, well, yes.
00:23:26.758 --> 00:23:29.200
And wouldn't it be nice if he actually said something?
00:23:30.260 --> 00:23:32.522
There was just no real substance to it.
00:23:33.824 --> 00:23:39.549
And as I consider that and I thought about that, I want to answer your questions.
00:23:40.354 --> 00:23:44.057
Based on that experience, does the church have an opinion?
00:23:44.159 --> 00:23:45.780
Why isn't the church speaking out?
00:23:46.540 --> 00:23:53.108
And I think the answer to that question is I think the church probably has many opinions and many strong opinions.
00:23:54.570 --> 00:24:10.009
And I think they see themselves as being shackled, is maybe too strong a word, but being limited in terms of what they feel they can say.
00:24:11.074 --> 00:24:12.875
in an international church.
00:24:13.876 --> 00:24:25.107
What I got from Mitt Romney, what I got from just the whole Peru experience is that the church is trying very hard to establish itself as an international church.
00:24:25.729 --> 00:24:31.855
On paper, we have more members outside of the United States than we have inside the United States.
00:24:32.435 --> 00:24:38.582
And so I think we can make the case that we are an international church, but we are not perceived that way.
00:24:39.362 --> 00:24:40.522
I think, internationally.
00:24:40.583 --> 00:24:43.826
We continue to be perceived as an American church.
00:24:45.068 --> 00:24:49.253
And I think in many ways, we really still are an American church.
00:24:49.775 --> 00:24:52.798
Culturally, we are an American church.
00:24:52.938 --> 00:24:59.346
Culturally, the American influence is pervasive no matter where you go.
00:24:59.365 --> 00:25:04.853
And I think the church leaders are trying very hard to dial that back.
00:25:05.032 --> 00:25:09.753
And I think that It's a mixed bag as to whether they're succeeding.
00:25:10.454 --> 00:25:22.931
So I think that is the reason why we're not hearing more pointed opinions, is that I think they think that will reinforce the idea of the American church.
00:25:23.651 --> 00:25:28.176
So I offer that by way of explanation, not by way of excuse.
00:25:28.978 --> 00:25:29.838
Because I'm with you.
00:25:29.878 --> 00:25:31.801
I'm 100% with you.
00:25:31.821 --> 00:25:34.765
They need to be speaking out about this because...
00:25:35.362 --> 00:25:43.613
It's just so morally contemptible to be on the side of the dictators, to be on the side of the communists.
00:25:44.193 --> 00:25:45.596
It's stunning.
00:25:45.756 --> 00:25:47.117
You go back in church history.
00:25:47.759 --> 00:25:48.881
You don't have to go very far back.
00:25:49.181 --> 00:25:51.124
We're not talking the times of Joseph Smith.
00:25:51.523 --> 00:25:59.275
We're talking mid to late 20th century history where church leaders would get up in conference.
00:25:59.836 --> 00:26:01.238
I've got a series of quotes here.
00:26:02.306 --> 00:26:04.167
As Jeff Benson, I think, was one, wasn't he?
00:26:04.489 --> 00:26:05.369
Oh, jeez, yes.
00:26:05.450 --> 00:26:14.541
President Benson, his entire ministry in the Quorum of the Twelve was focused on condemning communism.
00:26:15.503 --> 00:26:16.144
Here's some quotes.
00:26:16.204 --> 00:26:25.156
He says, We must ever keep in mind that collectivized control over private property is not the United Order but is socialism, which is part of the communist strategy.
00:26:25.196 --> 00:26:31.925
And no true Latter-day Saint and no true American can be a socialist or a communist.
00:26:32.289 --> 00:26:35.034
or support programs leading in that direction.
00:26:35.934 --> 00:26:44.607
He wrote in a book, We must be vigilant in exposing and opposing communism in all its forms, for it seeks to destroy faith in God and to make the state supreme.
00:26:45.528 --> 00:26:45.710
J.
00:26:45.730 --> 00:26:49.315
Raymond Clarke says, Communism and socialism are state slavery.
00:26:49.375 --> 00:26:56.746
No matter what you call it, communism, socialism, the welfare state, or any other name, it is enslaving the soul of man.
00:26:57.442 --> 00:26:57.821
Bruce R.
00:26:57.842 --> 00:27:06.371
McConkie, communism is Satan's counterfeit for the gospel plan, and it is an avowed enemy of the God of the land.
00:27:07.471 --> 00:27:10.234
And I could go on and on and on.
00:27:10.295 --> 00:27:12.176
They were very outspoken about this.
00:27:13.117 --> 00:27:24.509
Well, when Mitt Romney ran for president in 2012, he said that Russia was our biggest enemy.
00:27:25.153 --> 00:27:27.276
foe on the international stage.
00:27:27.455 --> 00:27:31.240
And he was mocked by President Obama in the debate.
00:27:31.299 --> 00:27:32.740
He says, yeah, the 80s called.
00:27:32.780 --> 00:27:34.462
They want their foreign policy back.
00:27:35.663 --> 00:27:42.730
And the Republican Party was mocked and ridiculed for being opposed to Russia, being opposed to communism.
00:27:42.770 --> 00:27:51.138
Now, Russia now does not overtly claim to be a communist nation anymore now that the Soviet Union has fallen.
00:27:51.778 --> 00:27:53.060
But nothing has changed.
00:27:53.780 --> 00:28:03.739
And in fact, Vladimir Putin is more of an authoritarian than any Russian leader, with maybe the exception of Joseph Stalin.
00:28:04.661 --> 00:28:12.732
All the communist leaders did was use communism as a pretext for an authoritarian dictatorship.
00:28:13.334 --> 00:28:16.157
And now Putin just doesn't even use the pretext anymore.
00:28:16.198 --> 00:28:17.819
Putin is open with it.
00:28:18.441 --> 00:28:20.064
He's a dictator.
00:28:20.304 --> 00:28:21.184
He's an authoritarian.
00:28:21.665 --> 00:28:24.150
Now, China is still...
00:28:24.769 --> 00:28:28.336
a communist government, although there have been a lot of market reforms.
00:28:28.415 --> 00:28:31.300
It's not what it was in its Maoist heyday.
00:28:31.340 --> 00:28:36.849
But North Korea is a Stalinist communist state.
00:28:37.810 --> 00:28:44.982
These are all the countries now that America is now aligned with, that America voted with.
00:28:45.143 --> 00:28:47.047
We have turned our backs on NATO.
00:28:47.626 --> 00:28:51.513
When you talk about, well, jeez, they're not going to get NATO membership.
00:28:51.970 --> 00:28:55.473
NATO has been rendered irrelevant by Donald Trump.
00:28:56.054 --> 00:29:06.286
Donald Trump has told NATO that since they're not paying their dues, he thinks that they pay some fee to be part of NATO when that's not how it works.
00:29:06.365 --> 00:29:10.130
But he said, well, I'm going to tell Russia they can do whatever they want.
00:29:11.250 --> 00:29:14.634
That's a direct quote from the president of the United States.
00:29:15.596 --> 00:29:21.061
I mean, this is so flagrantly wrong.
00:29:21.857 --> 00:29:23.339
This is so disturbing.
00:29:23.941 --> 00:29:25.442
This is so unnerving.
00:29:25.461 --> 00:29:27.845
And it is so immoral.
00:29:27.865 --> 00:29:32.111
It's not just a political disagreement.
00:29:32.191 --> 00:29:36.695
We're not talking about legitimate policy differences.
00:29:37.336 --> 00:29:39.839
We are talking about good versus evil.
00:29:40.361 --> 00:29:44.326
We are talking about aligning with what Bruce R.
00:29:44.365 --> 00:29:48.471
McConkie called the avowed enemy of the God of the land.
00:29:48.510 --> 00:29:54.670
We are talking about about the United States being the bad guys.
00:29:55.471 --> 00:29:59.315
I'm reminded of this skit on British television.
00:29:59.375 --> 00:30:05.701
I don't know what the program was, but it's two Nazi SS officers.
00:30:06.603 --> 00:30:10.106
And one of them says, well, why do we have a skull on our caps?
00:30:11.788 --> 00:30:12.990
Isn't that disturbing to you?
00:30:13.911 --> 00:30:15.031
Are we the baddies?
00:30:17.315 --> 00:30:19.676
He says, it feels like we're the baddies.
00:30:20.705 --> 00:30:24.630
And they talk about that over and over again, and it's played for laughs.
00:30:25.471 --> 00:30:30.396
But I look at what's happening on the international stage now, and we're the baddies.
00:30:31.117 --> 00:30:33.579
America is one of the baddies.
00:30:34.340 --> 00:30:35.061
George W.
00:30:35.122 --> 00:30:44.613
Bush, after 9-11, described the axis of evil, and he put North Korea in the axis of evil.
00:30:44.712 --> 00:30:46.074
These are evil nations.
00:30:47.174 --> 00:30:49.258
Well, we're now part of the axis of evil.
00:30:50.049 --> 00:30:51.672
We're lining up with those guys.
00:30:51.751 --> 00:30:53.273
We're lining up with the baddies.
00:30:53.753 --> 00:30:55.655
We're not lining up with the good guys.
00:30:55.757 --> 00:31:00.301
We're not lining up with the people who have been our allies since World War II.
00:31:01.202 --> 00:31:11.153
It's just up is down, black is white, and it's Latter-day Saints who are cheering it on.
00:31:11.173 --> 00:31:14.057
This is what's breaking my heart.
00:31:14.721 --> 00:31:40.845
It's the Mormons who are going against, I mean, all the people who support Trump also would tell you that they adore Ezra Taft Benson and they adore the far-right ideology that church leaders have tried to distance themselves from, but which was, you know, espoused by Ezra Taft Benson, by J.
00:31:40.904 --> 00:31:43.009
Reuben Clark, by Spencer W.
00:31:43.048 --> 00:31:43.450
Kimball.
00:31:43.569 --> 00:31:50.181
I have a quote here, communism is a godless philosophy that seeks to destroy man's agency and enslave him to the state.
00:31:50.221 --> 00:31:51.222
That was in 1977.
00:31:51.343 --> 00:31:56.612
I mean, that wasn't in the 19th century.
00:31:56.652 --> 00:32:03.324
That's recent enough that most people who are alive today were alive when that was said.
00:32:03.344 --> 00:32:09.321
I mean, this is And we have just abandoned all of this as a church.
00:32:10.041 --> 00:32:11.463
We have moved away from this.
00:32:11.683 --> 00:32:23.116
And church leaders, I do think, I am told repeatedly, and I believe it, that behind the scenes, church leaders are not Trump fans.
00:32:23.416 --> 00:32:26.140
They recognize how problematic Donald Trump is.
00:32:27.501 --> 00:32:35.109
I've had actually multiple people tell me that not a single member of the Quorum of the Twelve or the First Presidency voted for Donald Trump.
00:32:35.521 --> 00:32:36.884
I can't confirm that.
00:32:37.664 --> 00:32:38.746
That's speculation.
00:32:38.786 --> 00:32:54.144
But if all of that's true, they're not speaking out for what reason?
00:32:55.246 --> 00:32:57.328
And it feels like cowardice.
00:32:57.608 --> 00:32:59.991
I can't think of any other appropriate word.
00:33:01.953 --> 00:33:08.063
I don't know that they would describe it as cowardice because they would describe it as, okay, we're trying not to be an American church.
00:33:08.584 --> 00:33:11.788
We're trying not to comment only on what happens in America.
00:33:11.929 --> 00:33:20.041
And yet, it was only, what, two years ago that President Oaks gave a talk about the United States Constitution and General Conference?
00:33:20.823 --> 00:33:32.278
I think it's a fool's errand to think that we're ever going to get away from how tied we are to American culture.
00:33:32.318 --> 00:33:40.490
The idea that suddenly that's going to disappear, I just don't see it.
00:33:40.730 --> 00:33:42.451
I just don't see how that's going to work.
00:33:43.192 --> 00:33:57.530
And so if we are still tied to American culture, and if Latter-day Saints in America are aligning with evil in the form of Donald Trump, then yeah, I think the church has a duty to speak out.
00:33:57.691 --> 00:34:01.832
And I am just as frustrated as you are that they're not willing to do it.
00:34:02.393 --> 00:34:06.141
So that's my rant in response to your rant.
00:34:06.340 --> 00:34:08.324
And I just, so where does this leave us?
00:34:09.085 --> 00:34:11.311
Yeah, this is like a, for me, it's like a counseling session.
00:34:11.331 --> 00:34:13.675
You should be able to talk about these things and get it off the chest.
00:34:13.735 --> 00:34:16.059
And, you know, I, I'm not American.
00:34:17.922 --> 00:34:18.364
You are.
00:34:19.146 --> 00:34:23.273
You, you know, you understand America far more than I do.
00:34:24.034 --> 00:34:28.338
I can say that our relationship, my family and my personal relationship with America is one.
00:34:29.000 --> 00:34:32.724
I hold America in high regard, a great deal of respect, continue to do.
00:34:32.764 --> 00:34:33.626
That won't change.
00:34:34.065 --> 00:34:35.367
We have a lot of friends in the States.
00:34:35.927 --> 00:34:40.873
We go there many, many times on holiday, on business, et cetera.
00:34:41.534 --> 00:34:44.699
We have an affinity with America, the American people.
00:34:45.340 --> 00:34:46.240
We love America.
00:34:46.300 --> 00:35:02.713
We have high expectations, rightly or wrongly, that America, a good, strong America, acting with integrity, with fairness, but firmness as well, is essential, critical for stability in the world, with no question.
00:35:03.315 --> 00:35:07.340
You know, militarily, economically, politically, socially.
00:35:07.360 --> 00:35:20.538
When America is, it sounds like we're describing the church again, but when America is doing the right things, and it does a lot of the time, it is the most extraordinary country.
00:35:20.617 --> 00:35:22.139
It's got the can-do attitude.
00:35:22.599 --> 00:35:50.170
You know, I grew up in a socialistic environment in the uk that was a very different environment to what i have here in canada and my experience in the united states and america has um the can do get it done attitude on the projects that i work on in the big projects we are i always welcomed and a few of us did the American companies that would come in to work on the projects.
00:35:50.550 --> 00:36:09.873
And in fact, a lot of the British jurisdictions, governments over there, the authorities there would prefer the Americans to be on the project because there was a attitude of getting things done, getting it done and getting it done right and bringing that can-do attitude.
00:36:10.494 --> 00:36:11.777
And America's known for that.
00:36:12.978 --> 00:36:20.855
You know, getting things done, motivation, driven, competitive, and that brings a lot of qualities.
00:36:21.516 --> 00:36:27.023
And this has been my personal and my professional experience working with professionals in the United States.
00:36:27.443 --> 00:36:33.891
And my friends in America are very incredible people, extraordinarily motivated, talented individuals.
00:36:34.253 --> 00:36:39.195
I'm not saying America has a monopoly on talent or can-do attitude.
00:36:39.496 --> 00:36:46.005
I'm saying I see that attitude more in abundance in America than I do anywhere else in the world.
00:36:46.065 --> 00:36:47.608
I've traveled to other parts of the world.
00:36:48.449 --> 00:36:51.735
We need a good, strong America in the world.
00:36:52.235 --> 00:36:56.521
Without that anchor, we're in trouble.
00:36:57.143 --> 00:37:16.987
And we're now seeing the decision from the President of the United States, who is changing the fundamentals of of those basic important principles about integrity, honesty and rule of law and essentially doing the right thing.
00:37:17.548 --> 00:37:20.251
You may or may not have seen some of my comments on Facebook.
00:37:20.311 --> 00:37:26.780
I felt so strongly I put some of these things on Facebook and I get very little response and that's okay.
00:37:26.822 --> 00:37:33.351
I don't know if people are concerned or afraid to post or whether it would ensue in an argument online.
00:37:33.411 --> 00:37:37.335
And again, I said earlier that we need to have I think we need to talk about these things.
00:37:37.956 --> 00:37:39.639
Social media is a platform to do that.
00:37:40.199 --> 00:37:44.385
And I think we can have a civil and positive discourse, a respectful discourse on that.
00:37:44.925 --> 00:37:57.041
Some of the things I've said that I feel so strongly about that I put on Facebook is for the first time in history, a president of the United States of America has voted with the enemies of the free world, Russia, North Korea, Belarus.
00:37:57.543 --> 00:38:02.730
If there is a leader of the free world, it is not, I repeat, not the president of the United States.
00:38:03.617 --> 00:38:22.844
I've also said that on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, during a key vote at the UN General Assembly, the United States of America sided with Russia and North Korea in voting against the resolution condemning Russia's illegal war.
00:38:23.364 --> 00:38:27.449
Russia and North Korea must absolutely love America right now.
00:38:27.911 --> 00:38:28.791
I'm lost for words.
00:38:29.632 --> 00:38:56.878
And then earlier I put on here that described Putin and Trump as like the Godfather movie where you've got the Corleone family and Don Corleone is the Don and he's got a rival, got a number of rivals, but Don Emilio Barzini is the other rival there in the Mafia movie there in the Godfather.
00:38:56.898 --> 00:39:09.945
And I go in a little bit about why I see a similarity between Trump and Putin looking like gangster, godfather-type politics, carving up Ukraine, going into Ukraine, basically.
00:39:09.985 --> 00:39:20.782
And there's a deal being done this Thursday, Friday, by the way, where America will take half of much of the GDP of Ukraine in return for investing in Ukraine without any security guarantees.
00:39:21.163 --> 00:39:22.465
It's like a shakedown.
00:39:22.525 --> 00:39:26.811
It's like, look, I get that you need to get the money back.
00:39:26.851 --> 00:39:27.672
I understand that.
00:39:28.273 --> 00:39:32.505
But I understand that America's put billions in, and so has Europe, by the way.
00:39:32.525 --> 00:39:33.527
I think it's very, very close.
00:39:33.588 --> 00:39:34.809
Not the 300 billion, that.
00:39:35.210 --> 00:39:49.327
By the way, in terms of the facts, Trump gets a lot of the information incorrect, blurts out these numbers, and a lot of the time is either lying or is factually incorrect and can be proven.
00:39:49.387 --> 00:40:00.721
And by the way, two days ago at the press conference, press meeting that they had in front of Trump there, I think it was at the White House, where Macron, President of France, showed up.
00:40:01.280 --> 00:40:16.434
Trump talked about the financial conditions with Ukraine, loans and investment, and Macron publicly had to correct him, did it very nicely, put his hand on Trump's hand and said, actually, no, you're wrong.
00:40:16.474 --> 00:40:17.856
You've got that wrong.
00:40:17.896 --> 00:40:20.599
Again, for our listeners, you should go and look at that.
00:40:21.219 --> 00:40:24.503
You know, this is not something that the, I'm not talking about any media reporting.
00:40:24.543 --> 00:40:42.889
I'm talking about going to listen to what Trump is saying, what words are coming out of his mouth, and then watching the French president correct him nicely, more than I think what Trump deserved, publicly, and listening to what the French president had to say.
00:40:42.909 --> 00:40:44.672
It did a remarkable job there.
00:40:45.755 --> 00:40:52.706
And so you've got this president who is a liar, who's not concerned about facts and truth.
00:40:53.601 --> 00:41:04.655
who is now behaving like a mafia gangster, carving up Ukraine, deciding what's happening with Ukraine, with Russia, without Ukraine at the table.
00:41:06.137 --> 00:41:07.398
It's extraordinary.
00:41:08.119 --> 00:41:19.233
And so I've commented on these on my Facebook social media, and I've not commented on the church because I don't want to bring the church into disrepute.
00:41:20.315 --> 00:41:22.898
However, I am looking...
00:41:23.233 --> 00:41:25.978
to the church for leadership.
00:41:26.840 --> 00:41:31.947
The church is very, you know, you talked earlier about, you know, why is the church not responding?
00:41:32.007 --> 00:41:33.789
Is it in a difficult place?
00:41:33.869 --> 00:41:36.554
It has these opinions, but it's afraid of sharing them.
00:41:37.135 --> 00:41:38.177
Is it a bit cowardly?
00:41:38.317 --> 00:41:38.918
I think it is.
00:41:38.938 --> 00:41:42.344
I think the church is very concerned about what it says politically.
00:41:43.385 --> 00:41:51.538
But if you go back in time and you've given this as an example, it seems that the church leaders have not been afraid to speak up.
00:41:52.065 --> 00:41:53.849
You've given us five or six quotes.
00:41:54.329 --> 00:41:59.039
If you go back further in time, the leaders of the church are completely unafraid about speaking the mind.
00:41:59.360 --> 00:42:20.652
If you go back even further in time to the Book of Mormon, there's examples with Nephi, where in the Book of Mormon, across the Book of Mormon, Nephi and Alma, Nephi, for example, was rebuking his brothers because they were being, you know, misbehaving.
00:42:20.711 --> 00:42:24.237
They were breaking the commandments and they were threatening his life.
00:42:24.818 --> 00:42:28.161
And Nephi said that his words were too strong for his brothers.
00:42:28.181 --> 00:42:33.528
He said Nephi's words were harsh because he loved truth and he wanted to help his brothers turn to God.
00:42:33.568 --> 00:42:36.672
Nephi's brothers reacted violently to his teachings.
00:42:37.112 --> 00:42:38.054
Nephi understood that.
00:42:38.173 --> 00:42:50.063
He said a quote in Nephi 1, 1 Nephi 16, 2 says, Nephi says, the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center.
00:42:51.324 --> 00:42:53.909
Why can't the modern church relationship be bold?
00:42:55.030 --> 00:42:56.773
The scriptures say, be bold but not overbearing.
00:42:57.434 --> 00:42:58.856
Why can't we be bold?
00:42:58.896 --> 00:43:04.266
Why can't Nelson and the prophets speak up like earlier prophets going back to the 70s?
00:43:04.686 --> 00:43:08.652
Elizabeth Benson was the prophet when you and I were on a mission, late 80s.
00:43:09.409 --> 00:43:12.333
And he had these, you know, that's like in our own lifetime.
00:43:12.353 --> 00:43:14.356
That's only 35 years ago or whatever, right?
00:43:15.137 --> 00:43:22.626
And the church seemed to have this confidence to be able to speak up and speak out and be unafraid.
00:43:23.228 --> 00:43:26.351
And you can disagree with that, fine, but they were unafraid to speaking out.
00:43:27.333 --> 00:43:37.266
You know, the church, as I said earlier at the very beginning, has got this long history of, you know, supporting the Constitution, trying to do the right thing.
00:43:37.666 --> 00:43:41.130
It teaches that the Holy Ghost speaketh of truth and testifies of truth.
00:43:42.052 --> 00:43:44.496
It talks about the role and responsibility of prophets.
00:43:44.657 --> 00:43:57.275
It's to tell the world what has happened or what's happening and what is going to happen if the world disobeys the commandments and to speak about the future, to prophesy, to prophesy.
00:43:57.356 --> 00:44:19.092
Why can't President Nelson, as the prophet, and to be his fundamental self in being a prophet, to prophesy You know, the church prophesied in the proclamation to the world that, you know, if they don't follow the basic principles of family, then great calamities, I think, would come upon the world, right?
00:44:20.172 --> 00:44:21.434
Maybe this is that.
00:44:21.534 --> 00:44:24.237
Maybe the church sees that as a connection.
00:44:24.277 --> 00:44:24.958
I don't know.
00:44:25.398 --> 00:44:59.445
00:44:59.905 --> 00:45:00.686
They're just fodder.
00:45:01.378 --> 00:45:03.920
You've now got the North Koreans in the war.
00:45:04.501 --> 00:45:07.606
Putin doesn't care about individuals, about people.
00:45:08.166 --> 00:45:11.690
He cares about his political goals and objectives.
00:45:12.231 --> 00:45:14.394
And Trump cares about it as well.
00:45:14.715 --> 00:45:17.599
I honestly believe, Jim, that Trump is focused.
00:45:18.860 --> 00:45:25.208
The very center of this, one of the key centers is focused on trying to get the Nobel Peace Prize at any cost.
00:45:27.311 --> 00:45:28.773
Sell Ukraine down the river.
00:45:29.474 --> 00:45:31.496
Make massive concessions to Russia.
00:45:31.516 --> 00:45:36.083
Don't stand up against Russia, who's going to expand beyond Ukraine, by the way.
00:45:36.123 --> 00:45:37.666
That's why the Europeans now...
00:45:37.706 --> 00:45:39.469
That's why NATO's breaking up.
00:45:39.929 --> 00:45:43.695
That's why the Europeans now are saying, we can't look to America as an ally.
00:45:44.235 --> 00:45:50.784
We now need to create a European defense force, and they're doing that right now, and they have to, because Russia will continue to expand its territory.
00:45:50.985 --> 00:45:52.228
You're not going to stop it at Ukraine.
00:45:52.807 --> 00:45:56.333
America is only interested in Europe from a financial investment perspective.
00:45:57.057 --> 00:46:02.847
and is now looking at changing the whole geopolitics, changing NATO.
00:46:02.867 --> 00:46:05.710
I think we've seen the beginning of the breakup of the NATO.
00:46:05.731 --> 00:46:07.112
I think you mentioned that earlier.
00:46:07.152 --> 00:46:13.603
And America is not the America that we've relied on.
00:46:13.623 --> 00:46:18.289
I agree there's some arguments that the world relied on America too much.
00:46:20.012 --> 00:46:20.574
I agree with that.
00:46:20.693 --> 00:46:23.057
I think there's a lot more that the rest of the world could have done.
00:46:23.554 --> 00:46:24.255
to help themselves.
00:46:24.295 --> 00:46:25.596
America had to come to the rescue.
00:46:25.617 --> 00:46:27.498
I think there's a lot of evidence behind that.
00:46:29.001 --> 00:46:42.356
But to retrench and to come back and just to be interested in this financially and to not condemn Russia for this aggression is just unforgivable.
00:46:42.456 --> 00:46:46.342
And for the church not to come out and speak up is unforgivable.
00:46:46.601 --> 00:46:47.282
It's cowardly.
00:46:48.083 --> 00:46:48.824
It's unforgivable.
00:46:49.085 --> 00:46:49.565
It's weak.
00:46:51.228 --> 00:46:54.860
If God has a voice in this, Surely he does.
00:46:54.900 --> 00:46:57.244
What does he think?
00:46:57.625 --> 00:47:04.376
And therefore, if Nelson is the mouthpiece, why is Nelson not speaking the words of the mind of God?
00:47:04.416 --> 00:47:08.224
Or does the God not have, the Lord not have an opinion on this?
00:47:08.304 --> 00:47:09.545
Is he quiet?
00:47:09.927 --> 00:47:10.668
And if so, why?
00:47:10.688 --> 00:47:16.038
So, yeah, I'm trying to piece all this together and trying to understand that.
00:47:17.378 --> 00:47:24.271
process with God and revelation and discernment and doing the right thing and being bold and speaking up.
00:47:24.411 --> 00:47:32.967
You said when you met Mitt Romney, you appreciated him for making a very courageous decision in condemning Trump.
00:47:34.510 --> 00:47:36.574
And Mitt Romney can do it.
00:47:37.496 --> 00:47:38.117
You can do it.
00:47:38.137 --> 00:47:38.798
I can do it.
00:47:38.998 --> 00:47:40.202
We can stand up for the right thing.
00:47:40.961 --> 00:47:43.364
And so I'm disappointed in the church.
00:47:44.166 --> 00:47:45.027
That's an understatement.
00:47:45.146 --> 00:47:45.907
I'm disappointed.
00:47:46.268 --> 00:48:00.405
I'm actually ashamed that the church that I used to belong to can't come out and do and say something on something like this because we're now seeing going to be massive repercussions on this.
00:48:01.626 --> 00:48:08.155
And is it also, to your point, that the church is afraid to speak up because most of the members or many of the members are pro-Trumpers?
00:48:09.797 --> 00:48:10.617
It just baffles me.
00:48:11.233 --> 00:48:17.663
So our listeners are probably exhausted by now listening to all this.
00:48:18.264 --> 00:48:21.909
And I know many of our listeners will have a thought and a position.
00:48:21.949 --> 00:48:24.333
They'll feel strongly about these things.
00:48:24.472 --> 00:48:27.737
And we're not asking people to agree to us at all or agree to our opinions.
00:48:27.797 --> 00:48:34.206
But you are right to remind me that the scope of the Inside Out does include talking about politics.
00:48:34.347 --> 00:48:35.148
It is inseparable.
00:48:35.347 --> 00:48:35.809
You are right.
00:48:36.802 --> 00:48:40.786
And these things, as I say, they affect us, they affect our lives.
00:48:41.146 --> 00:49:01.228
00:49:01.630 --> 00:49:10.954
And again, the profit of the free world I don't think he's been described like that, but the prophet of the free world can't open his mouth and say something.
00:49:11.155 --> 00:49:13.038
I'm just shocked.
00:49:13.458 --> 00:49:16.682
So anyway, you've been very patient with me.
00:49:16.842 --> 00:49:23.253
Our listeners have been extraordinarily patient listening to this, but it's something that I feel very strongly about.
00:49:23.934 --> 00:49:24.494
Oh, me too.
00:49:24.876 --> 00:49:28.101
And I think, I mean, it's an exhausting time to be alive.
00:49:28.141 --> 00:49:31.947
It's exhausting that we're having to live through this.
00:49:32.887 --> 00:49:41.240
My brother-in-law, There's a man by the name of Nate Ullman, and he wrote a, he has a blog called Thoughts from a Tamed Cynic.
00:49:42.501 --> 00:49:44.565
And he wrote an article called The Day of Infamy.
00:49:45.965 --> 00:49:52.251
And he begins, he says, on August 14th, 1941, the United States of America became the leader of the free world.
00:49:53.514 --> 00:50:14.614
He talks about the creation of the Atlantic Charter, which was the underlying alliance that led to NATO's And that when World War II hit and then when America was attacked in Pearl Harbor, that that's the alliance that put everything together.
00:50:15.835 --> 00:50:20.519
And so I'm just going to quote a few things that he says.
00:50:21.061 --> 00:50:25.105
Trump is fundamentally wrong to view alliances as a sign of American weakness.
00:50:25.644 --> 00:50:35.132
For 80 years, a large part of what it means for the United States to be a powerful nation— is that it can expect the support of the wealthiest and freest countries of the world.
00:50:35.773 --> 00:50:42.445
That gives the United States influence and global reach that literally no country in the history of the world has been able to match.
00:50:43.206 --> 00:50:49.416
He is rapidly destroying one of the twin pillars on which that American power has been based.
00:50:49.978 --> 00:50:54.666
That power is not based solely on economic or military clout.
00:50:55.233 --> 00:51:13.195
It also comes from the fact that despite the inevitable machinations of nations and America's compromises and shortcomings, ultimately, the United States has been committed to the defense of Western democracy and has stood against aggression and military adventurism.
00:51:14.376 --> 00:51:25.010
And, you know, here we are with Trump not only not standing against aggression and military adventurism, he's proposing aggression.
00:51:25.313 --> 00:51:26.576
and military adventurism.
00:51:26.876 --> 00:51:30.039
He wants to make you guys in Canada the 51st state.
00:51:30.561 --> 00:51:35.367
He wants to take over Greenland, and he's even said that we might use the military to do that.
00:51:35.867 --> 00:51:38.351
He wants to seize the Panama Canal.
00:51:38.911 --> 00:51:39.572
He wants to...
00:51:39.893 --> 00:51:46.902
Just yesterday, he posted a video generated by AI called Trump Gaza.
00:51:47.842 --> 00:51:51.387
It's the most ridiculous, obscene thing you have ever seen.
00:51:51.407 --> 00:51:52.690
It shows...
00:51:53.313 --> 00:52:02.061
And the AI is bizarre because it shows at one point these women in bikinis, but they also have beards and they're belly dancing.
00:52:02.282 --> 00:52:03.222
It's really bizarre.
00:52:03.844 --> 00:52:08.347
But it shows Gaza as this kind of Vegas utopia.
00:52:09.168 --> 00:52:13.733
And Elon Musk walks down the street with money raining down on his head.
00:52:13.793 --> 00:52:17.956
There's a huge gold statue of Donald Trump in the middle of a town square.
00:52:17.996 --> 00:52:22.961
You see Donald Trump in a casino groping.
00:52:23.393 --> 00:52:30.864
a showgirl, as if that's supposed to be a great thing, and there's this music in the background, and it's Trump Gaza, Trump Gaza.
00:52:30.884 --> 00:52:37.413
And he proposed this idea of cleansing Gaza.
00:52:37.472 --> 00:52:52.952
He even used the word cleansing, which in the history of the world of ethnic cleansing, I mean, how much more blunt do you have to be to recognize that this is who this man is?
00:52:53.858 --> 00:53:06.177
He wants to cleanse Gaza of all the Gazans and send them to other countries, kick them out of their homes, remove them from their land, and build a casino that has a huge gold statue of Donald Trump in the middle of it.
00:53:06.938 --> 00:53:08.079
It's obscene.
00:53:08.119 --> 00:53:09.643
It's obscene.
00:53:09.663 --> 00:53:10.684
It's immoral.
00:53:10.885 --> 00:53:13.208
It's not just politically wrong.
00:53:13.688 --> 00:53:21.942
Going back to my brother-in-law's essay, because, Ian, I brought this up because you talk about the prophet of the free world, the leader of the free world.
00:53:23.362 --> 00:53:30.652
And he ends his essay by saying, I hope and pray that the damage that Trump has done in the last few weeks is not permanent.
00:53:30.853 --> 00:53:42.811
But if it is, I fear that February 24th, 2025, and that was the day that we voted with North Korea and with Russia and with China against Ukraine.
00:53:43.773 --> 00:53:53.427
But if it is, I fear that February 24th, 2025 will mark the day when the United States of America stopped being the leader of the free world.
00:53:54.128 --> 00:54:01.235
It is a deeply shameful thing to sell out an ally that has bravely resisted with our support an aggressive tyrant.
00:54:01.936 --> 00:54:02.936
Deeply shameful.
00:54:03.478 --> 00:54:05.780
I am furious at what Trump is doing to Ukraine.
00:54:05.820 --> 00:54:10.985
More than that, I am furious at what he is doing to the United States.
00:54:12.266 --> 00:54:13.487
And this is where we are.
00:54:13.527 --> 00:54:28.416
We have an authoritarian leader who is doing things that Church leaders have decried with their full voices and at full volume for decades.
00:54:29.117 --> 00:54:34.545
And now when we have a leader that's doing it, we're silent.
00:54:35.246 --> 00:54:35.867
We're shutting up.
00:54:36.628 --> 00:54:46.242
And you brought up something that I have considered in the past, but didn't really want to consider here, but I fear it may very well be true.
00:54:47.143 --> 00:54:49.565
Because I've made excuses before.
00:54:50.242 --> 00:54:56.228
for church leaders not speaking up on this in that, oh, they don't want to look like an American church.
00:54:56.509 --> 00:54:59.351
Oh, they don't want to upset international members.
00:55:00.152 --> 00:55:04.878
But you said they don't want to upset their Trumpy supporters.
00:55:05.297 --> 00:55:07.820
They don't want to upset Trumpy Latter-day Saints.
00:55:08.722 --> 00:55:36.215
And there's something very real to that because I think they are still stinging from the rebuke they got from a large portion of church membership when they stood with the science in the midst of the pandemic, when they said, get vaccinated, when they said, wear a mask, when they said, take appropriate precautions.
00:55:36.315 --> 00:55:39.199
President Nelson spoke out very bluntly.
00:55:39.280 --> 00:55:42.425
He called the vaccines a literal godsend.
00:55:43.202 --> 00:55:46.246
So this is a prophet of the Lord referencing God.
00:55:46.266 --> 00:55:50.253
And he's essentially saying, God sent this vaccine.
00:55:50.333 --> 00:55:55.581
This vaccine is the answer to the prayers that I've asked you to offer.
00:55:56.322 --> 00:55:58.204
In general conference, he said, we're going to fast.
00:55:58.244 --> 00:56:00.007
We're going to pray for an end of this pandemic.
00:56:00.528 --> 00:56:02.791
And then the prophet says, we've received that answer.
00:56:02.831 --> 00:56:04.454
And that answer is these vaccines.
00:56:05.516 --> 00:56:19.565
And then all of these church members say, who say, I sustain the prophet, and are mad at people like Jim Bennett for advocating for more inclusion in the church in ways they don't like.
00:56:21.246 --> 00:56:28.538
All these people suddenly turn around and say, oh, he's only speaking as a man, or worse, he's a fallen prophet.
00:56:29.179 --> 00:56:30.360
He's an apostasy.
00:56:31.001 --> 00:56:33.965
How dare he say that we should take the vaccine?
00:56:34.806 --> 00:56:43.594
What they learned from that, what church leaders learned from that experience, I think is a lesson that is hurting us today.
00:56:43.755 --> 00:56:51.764
And that lesson is, if we say things that go against church members' politics, they're not going to follow them.
00:56:53.085 --> 00:57:04.077
And if we say things continually that church members don't follow, we're going to look weak, we're going to look ineffective, and so we need to not do that.
00:57:05.121 --> 00:57:18.476
I fear that that's one of the lessons they took from the pandemic is, yeah, this contingent of church members who are tithe payers and who are in other ways faithful.
00:57:18.677 --> 00:57:20.099
I mean, they fulfill callings.
00:57:20.719 --> 00:57:24.402
And these aren't just church goers.
00:57:24.483 --> 00:57:25.184
These are bishops.
00:57:25.244 --> 00:57:26.326
These are stake presidents.
00:57:27.065 --> 00:57:30.030
These are people on every level of the church.
00:57:30.170 --> 00:57:43.699
And they're people who, in most ways, are considered the most faithful members of the church, but their loyalty to the church is trumped by Trump.
00:57:44.920 --> 00:57:52.027
It's trumped by their loyalty to their political agenda, and that's more important to them.
00:57:52.849 --> 00:58:03.391
And I think the church leaders know damn well that if they were to come out against the evil that Trump is doing.
00:58:03.510 --> 00:58:05.893
Not just the bad politics that Trump is doing.
00:58:05.954 --> 00:58:08.876
We've had bad politics in every administration.
00:58:08.956 --> 00:58:10.579
We can survive bad politics.
00:58:11.039 --> 00:58:20.710
We can't survive pervasive and relentless pursuit of evil, which is what Donald Trump is doing.
00:58:20.750 --> 00:58:24.855
And it's what the United States is becoming.
00:58:24.934 --> 00:58:35.969
We have forfeited our role as leader of the free world and we are Allying ourselves with the bad guys, which makes us one of the bad guys.
00:58:36.048 --> 00:58:51.972
There's an old saying that if 14 people are at dinner with one Nazi and they don't stand up against him, then it's a dinner with 14 Nazis.
00:58:53.775 --> 00:58:58.623
If we just stay silent, if we don't stand up against it, we are complicit with it.
00:58:59.184 --> 00:59:00.405
And right now the church...
00:59:00.961 --> 00:59:05.226
and church leaders, frankly, are complicit with the Trump agenda.
00:59:05.887 --> 00:59:07.528
And the Trump agenda is evil.
00:59:08.630 --> 00:59:10.532
And there's really no way around that.
00:59:10.853 --> 00:59:13.715
I mean, there's no escape clause.
00:59:14.155 --> 00:59:18.601
There's no way that we can slough off our accountability for it.
00:59:19.202 --> 00:59:24.146
You know, when the church does something wrong, I used to say the church needs to do this.
00:59:24.327 --> 00:59:27.751
The church needs to do that as if the church were something separate from me.
00:59:28.731 --> 00:59:31.824
And now I recognize We need to do this.
00:59:32.244 --> 00:59:33.365
I am the church.
00:59:33.585 --> 00:59:34.628
I am part of the church.
00:59:34.748 --> 00:59:47.644
As long as I am inside the church, then if I stay in the church, I bear some measure of responsibility for anything the church does, which pains me when the church does things that I don't like.
00:59:48.485 --> 00:59:53.572
Well, the reality is we are now in the United States.
00:59:54.434 --> 00:59:59.942
We are complicit if we do not stand up against this evil man.
01:00:00.385 --> 01:00:01.527
this evil agenda.
01:00:02.409 --> 01:00:05.612
And I don't want the church to be complicit, but I fear that we are.
01:00:05.632 --> 01:00:09.559
And we need to not be.
01:00:09.599 --> 01:00:18.090
What is the point of all of these things that we are taught on a weekly, daily basis?
01:00:18.891 --> 01:00:20.934
We're supposed to study the scriptures daily.
01:00:20.954 --> 01:00:23.378
We pray daily.
01:00:24.034 --> 01:00:30.639
And we go to church and we receive instruction about how to be better disciples of Jesus Christ.
01:00:31.460 --> 01:00:53.822
What is the point of all of that if when the overwhelming evidence is that we are following somebody who is anti-Christ, who is opposed to the principles that we are taught on a daily basis, then what is the point of what we're taught if we're not able to use that?
01:00:54.242 --> 01:00:55.903
to stand up to evil.
01:00:56.864 --> 01:00:58.126
And so that's where I am.
01:00:58.266 --> 01:01:02.670
That's where this, it's not even that this is a tangent.
01:01:03.291 --> 01:01:10.079
This is front and center of, for me, front and center for the moral future of the church.
01:01:11.501 --> 01:01:23.353
If we think we can just ride this out and not raise a peep and keep our heads down and hope it goes away, we are in for a dreadful reckoning.
01:01:24.130 --> 01:01:25.251
somewhere down the road.
01:01:25.791 --> 01:01:27.012
It's already starting.
01:01:27.032 --> 01:01:28.614
It's already here.
01:01:29.115 --> 01:01:30.476
We are already seeing.
01:01:30.516 --> 01:01:33.159
The church is in Ukraine.
01:01:33.960 --> 01:01:39.608
The church has members in Ukraine and we are now essentially abandoning them.
01:01:40.528 --> 01:01:55.012
We are now saying, you know, go ahead, Donald Trump, align with the axis of evil and let's strip mine Ukraine for parts and hand it over to a dictator and allow him to do what he will.
01:01:55.773 --> 01:02:00.217
And we're just standing by and letting that happen, which means we're complicit with it.
01:02:01.018 --> 01:02:06.483
I just don't think we can stress this enough.
01:02:06.702 --> 01:02:16.293
I don't think that there is enough outrage, that there is enough fury that we can express in opposition to this.
01:02:17.514 --> 01:02:23.831
I just think we need, if the church as a whole is not going to raise its voice against this evil.
01:02:25.373 --> 01:02:27.317
You and I are going to do our part to do it.
01:02:28.077 --> 01:02:29.920
And I'm not going to back down from it.
01:02:31.123 --> 01:02:32.284
I'm going to continue to do it.
01:02:33.547 --> 01:02:42.360
It's ended, you know, I have a lot of people who talk about, you realize you've ended any chance you ever have of holding political office.
01:02:43.221 --> 01:02:44.302
And I said, yes, I do.
01:02:44.563 --> 01:02:45.445
I absolutely do.
01:02:46.065 --> 01:02:47.568
I realize that ship has sailed.
01:02:47.648 --> 01:02:50.012
I realize that that's not in my future.
01:02:51.253 --> 01:03:00.177
But For that to be in my future, I would have to somehow be complicit with evil.
01:03:01.260 --> 01:03:09.108
I look at the representatives in Utah who are Latter-day Saints, who do this kind of hand-wringing, oh, yeah, this probably isn't right.
01:03:09.128 --> 01:03:11.769
I mean, I look at John Curtis, senator from Utah.
01:03:11.891 --> 01:03:15.795
I ran against John Curtis as a member of the United Utah Party when he first ran for Congress.
01:03:16.514 --> 01:03:18.697
I only got 9.4% of the vote, but...
01:03:19.137 --> 01:03:20.599
I got to know John Curtis.
01:03:20.701 --> 01:03:22.362
I had several conversations with him.
01:03:22.483 --> 01:03:23.626
I consider him a good man.
01:03:23.646 --> 01:03:26.110
And he used to be a Democrat.
01:03:26.811 --> 01:03:29.916
And he decided he was never going to win an office as a Democrat.
01:03:29.956 --> 01:03:31.097
So he became a Republican.
01:03:31.679 --> 01:03:32.521
And he ran for office.
01:03:32.561 --> 01:03:33.702
He ran for Congress and won.
01:03:33.742 --> 01:03:35.184
And now he's run for the Senate.
01:03:35.324 --> 01:03:36.827
He's replaced Mitt Romney in the Senate.
01:03:36.947 --> 01:03:41.335
And a lot of people look to him as, okay, well, will you have the same conscience Mitt Romney did?
01:03:41.375 --> 01:03:42.858
And the answer is no.
01:03:43.554 --> 01:03:44.956
The answer is absolutely no.
01:03:45.559 --> 01:03:48.806
He said, oh, jeez, I'm worried about these crazy things RFK Jr.
01:03:48.865 --> 01:03:52.635
said about vaccines, and I'm worried about some of these other nominees.
01:03:53.135 --> 01:03:55.882
And then he went ahead and voted for all of them.
01:03:55.902 --> 01:04:03.278
And he hasn't issued any statement condemning the UN resolution vote, he's just going along for the ride.
01:04:03.599 --> 01:04:18.958
And he's doing that because he knows that if he doesn't do that, his constituents, the majority of whom are Latter-day Saints, will vote him out of office because what Trump is doing is what a majority of American Latter-day Saints want.
01:04:19.760 --> 01:04:20.981
And that's obscene to me.
01:04:21.523 --> 01:04:23.204
That's absolutely obscene to me.
01:04:23.865 --> 01:04:28.940
And as long as I can speak out against it, I am going to do that.
01:04:29.119 --> 01:04:33.126
So I very much appreciate you, Ian, participating.
01:04:33.186 --> 01:04:36.150
And I very much appreciate you raising this as the topic.
01:04:37.172 --> 01:04:45.704
And if listeners are frustrated by this or bored by this, we'll probably turn off quite a few people.
01:04:45.744 --> 01:04:49.530
At this point, you have to make a decision.
01:04:49.570 --> 01:04:51.693
You have to take sides.
01:04:52.289 --> 01:04:59.139
Joseph Smith once said, once you enlist in the gospel of Jesus Christ, you leave neutral ground forever.
01:05:00.121 --> 01:05:05.947
And he was talking about the church, but there is a wider principle there that I think applies.
01:05:08.371 --> 01:05:16.202
There is no neutral ground left in this global battle of good versus evil.
01:05:17.262 --> 01:05:21.929
And it is painfully clear which side Donald Trump is on.
01:05:22.626 --> 01:05:31.362
And if you think you can just stay neutral, stay quiet, and ride it out, you are on the side.
01:05:31.402 --> 01:05:34.728
You are not neutral.
01:05:35.449 --> 01:05:38.534
You are on the side of evil, and there's no way around that.
01:05:39.335 --> 01:05:44.585
So I don't know if that's too harsh, but that's where I am, and that's where I'm going to continue to be.
01:05:45.090 --> 01:05:45.851
And that's okay.
01:05:45.871 --> 01:05:54.864
And again, these are very, very serious, important things, and I know many of our listeners will feel strongly about these things either way, and that's okay.
01:05:56.547 --> 01:06:02.576
I appreciate you raising the fact that there are church members in Ukraine, and what is the church saying to them right now?
01:06:02.596 --> 01:06:05.260
You know, what's the church, especially after the vote?
01:06:06.643 --> 01:06:15.623
The church teaches that before the world was, there was a council in heaven, and two plans were put forward to God, one by Lucifer, who are my Jesus Christ.
01:06:16.563 --> 01:06:20.528
And two-thirds of us chose Jesus Christ's plan, the plan of salvation.
01:06:21.369 --> 01:06:28.398
And Lucifer, with the third of the hosts of heaven, and that plan, which was rejected, was cast down.
01:06:28.438 --> 01:06:31.541
And we went with Jesus Christ.
01:06:32.001 --> 01:06:32.523
We voted.
01:06:32.682 --> 01:06:33.362
There was a decision.
01:06:33.523 --> 01:06:34.344
We took a position.
01:06:34.744 --> 01:06:35.445
We took a stand.
01:06:35.465 --> 01:06:40.492
A few closing remarks here.
01:06:40.592 --> 01:06:42.554
I want to share this with you.
01:06:43.233 --> 01:06:46.478
As I was listening, I found this.
01:06:46.518 --> 01:06:48.420
It's a lesson.
01:06:48.440 --> 01:06:54.385
It's a lesson in the church lesson books, and it's dated August 23.
01:06:54.405 --> 01:06:57.650
I think it's one of the gospel study lessons.
01:06:57.989 --> 01:07:00.693
It's titled, Why We Should Speak Up for Truth.
01:07:01.213 --> 01:07:01.713
Listen to this.
01:07:02.896 --> 01:07:10.824
We merely have to watch the daily news or look around us to see that society is degrading rapidly.
01:07:11.344 --> 01:07:11.664
This is...
01:07:12.802 --> 01:07:13.483
80 months ago.
01:07:13.503 --> 01:07:19.971
It can become soul-numbing, and many of us may be tempted to just withdraw and keep quiet.
01:07:20.851 --> 01:07:23.876
But the law's discretion, direction rather, is clear.
01:07:24.737 --> 01:07:26.219
We are expected to speak up.
01:07:27.119 --> 01:07:29.003
We are expected to be a warning voice.
01:07:29.844 --> 01:07:37.572
We are expected to defend the truth in a world that increasingly does not want to hear or accept the truth.
01:07:38.954 --> 01:07:53.565
Elder Ballard said this in the lesson, The time has come when members of the church need to speak out and join with the many other concerned people in opposition to the offensive, destructive, and mean-spirited media influence that is swooping over the earth.
01:07:53.585 --> 01:07:58.373
So that's something that Elder Ballard felt strongly about, enough for him to be quoted in the lesson.
01:07:58.833 --> 01:08:05.043
You don't put your apostle quotes in without the apostle knowing about it, surely, in a standard gospel lesson, right?
01:08:05.724 --> 01:08:08.210
Elder Ballard would have known about this, that he's being quoted.
01:08:08.769 --> 01:08:11.873
And he says, so that's Elder Ballard, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
01:08:12.474 --> 01:08:25.091
At a religious study symposium in California, Elder Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a group of Germany during World War II, talked about a visit he and his wife made to Auschwitz, a former concentration camp established in German-occupied Poland.
01:08:25.131 --> 01:08:28.355
By the way, I'm going to Auschwitz in April and May, by the way, Jim.
01:08:30.238 --> 01:08:38.470
Elder Uchtdorf says this, I wonder how history might have been changed had the people of Germany spoken with one voice against the evil that arose around them.
01:08:39.137 --> 01:08:43.163
Elder Uchtdorf is saying this, perhaps future generations will ask the same of us today.
01:08:43.184 --> 01:08:57.203
As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to know truth and to have the influence of the Holy Ghost to help us recognize the difference between truth and error.
01:08:58.064 --> 01:09:15.197
When we use these gifts to speak, our influence for good will grow and our profound impacts to often evil risers in the world because good men and women do not find the courage to speak against it, said Elder Uchtdorf.
01:09:15.738 --> 01:09:26.253
He goes on to say, as sometimes terrible, preventable, terrible, preventable events happen because we fail to open our mouths.
01:09:28.016 --> 01:09:31.743
He then finishes his comment by saying, so how do we speak up for what's right?
01:09:32.824 --> 01:09:36.289
That's from the church lesson material right on the church website.
01:09:36.833 --> 01:09:39.556
August 23, titled Speaking Up the Truth.
01:09:40.158 --> 01:09:41.979
Why doesn't President Nelson read this lesson?
01:09:43.001 --> 01:09:43.421
Follow it.
01:09:44.483 --> 01:09:49.548
So if President Nelson or anyone is connected to President Nelson right now, listen to these words.
01:09:49.868 --> 01:09:55.475
I'm not trying to be overconfident here or arrogant.
01:09:56.457 --> 01:10:04.286
But if you're hearing this message, for goodness sake, for the sake of goodness, follow this lesson.
01:10:04.706 --> 01:10:12.157
Follow the advice from Elder Uchtdorf and Elder Ballard and speak up and speak out and say something.
01:10:12.438 --> 01:10:12.797
Anything.
01:10:14.100 --> 01:10:14.921
Do the right thing.
01:10:15.622 --> 01:10:16.264
Comment on it.
01:10:16.484 --> 01:10:17.985
Do something, for goodness sake.
01:10:19.569 --> 01:10:24.877
And defend the right and speak up against evil.
01:10:25.037 --> 01:10:28.442
Follow your own basic fundamental principles.
01:10:29.063 --> 01:10:29.363
Please.
01:10:30.604 --> 01:10:30.746
I...
01:10:31.329 --> 01:10:36.496
hope that someone in our listeners will pass this on to the president.
01:10:37.055 --> 01:10:38.778
Now is the time to do this.
01:10:38.837 --> 01:10:41.320
Is there ever a time to stand up and speak about something?
01:10:41.341 --> 01:10:42.421
Ever.
01:10:43.403 --> 01:10:46.626
And there's been many times where the church hasn't, and times when it has.
01:10:47.407 --> 01:10:58.099
Now is the time to do something, to say something, and not, as we heard in the lesson here, to be silent and to be quiet.
01:10:58.759 --> 01:11:00.822
And all around us, all these things are happening.
01:11:01.345 --> 01:11:03.609
Like you, Jim, I feel so strongly about this.
01:11:03.649 --> 01:11:12.939
If we don't live like this, if we don't live for integrity, Elder Bednar talks about integrity, by the way, a lot.
01:11:14.362 --> 01:11:15.944
We're a church of integrity.
01:11:15.963 --> 01:11:16.484
He says that.
01:11:17.426 --> 01:11:18.667
Integrity is so important to him.
01:11:19.868 --> 01:11:26.877
Well, let's have the integrity and the decency to do something, to say something, to speak up.
01:11:28.680 --> 01:11:30.221
And don't leave it.
01:11:30.402 --> 01:11:32.243
to members of the church guessing.
01:11:32.323 --> 01:11:33.204
Let's not be cowards.
01:11:33.265 --> 01:11:33.904
Let's speak up.
01:11:34.305 --> 01:11:41.351
We might not carry opinion with us, with people, but at least we're speaking our truth and we're being honest.
01:11:42.753 --> 01:11:47.877
And if we can't be that, Jim, in life, if we can't be like that in life, what are we, really?
01:11:48.618 --> 01:12:00.894
You know, when Elder Oak set me apart with the state presidency and we had those interviews at training, he asked us, speaking in the calling, not just in life, but in the calling, as well.
01:12:01.395 --> 01:12:02.837
How do you want to be remembered?
01:12:03.497 --> 01:12:06.600
That was his question to us as a new state presidency.
01:12:06.740 --> 01:12:07.681
How do you want to be remembered?
01:12:08.323 --> 01:12:11.286
Not just as in this life, but also as a presidency.
01:12:12.146 --> 01:12:16.171
And so I would ask President Nelson, how do you want to be remembered?
01:12:17.313 --> 01:12:25.221
When all these things are happening in the world and you're there silent, not saying anything, not speaking up, people will remember this.
01:12:25.882 --> 01:12:26.643
I will remember this.
01:12:27.583 --> 01:12:29.639
Please have the courage Do something.
01:12:29.698 --> 01:12:30.239
Say something.
01:12:30.659 --> 01:12:32.262
Follow the lesson material right here.
01:12:33.323 --> 01:12:34.926
I'm grateful for this conversation.
01:12:34.966 --> 01:12:36.108
Felt so strongly about it.
01:12:37.050 --> 01:12:38.231
And I appreciate your comments.
01:12:39.012 --> 01:12:39.953
I have nothing else to say.
01:12:39.974 --> 01:12:41.657
I think I'm going to go off my chest.
01:12:41.716 --> 01:12:43.680
I want to thank our listeners for being incredibly patient.
01:12:44.801 --> 01:12:47.546
And we may have lost some of them throughout this conversation.
01:12:47.565 --> 01:12:49.007
I don't know.
01:12:49.047 --> 01:12:52.353
We try to be respectful and kind and courteous.
01:12:53.054 --> 01:12:54.234
We feel so strongly about this.
01:12:54.555 --> 01:12:58.421
Do you have any final comments or thoughts, Jim, at your end before we close?
01:12:59.010 --> 01:12:59.770
I do not.
01:13:00.391 --> 01:13:02.636
Only to say amen and amen to what you've just
01:13:02.655 --> 01:13:02.856
said.
01:13:03.557 --> 01:13:03.978
Thank you.
01:13:04.099 --> 01:13:07.484
Well, to you, Jim, thank you so much for being part of this conversation.
01:13:07.645 --> 01:13:14.515
I really am grateful for your just openness and transparency and just speaking from the heart.
01:13:14.737 --> 01:13:15.797
And I know that you've done that.
01:13:16.520 --> 01:13:17.140
I've done that.
01:13:17.400 --> 01:13:18.582
I've tried to do that as well.
01:13:18.622 --> 01:13:22.409
I'm grateful for our listeners, for their patience and understanding.
01:13:23.010 --> 01:13:24.912
We try to keep that balance.
01:13:25.073 --> 01:13:26.595
The church does extraordinarily good.
01:13:26.614 --> 01:13:30.501
And you know when the church stands up and speaks up on things, I think that's great.
01:13:31.122 --> 01:13:31.563
I really do.
01:13:31.582 --> 01:13:35.328
And let's hope that it will do so on this occasion.
01:13:35.809 --> 01:13:36.369
Thank you to you.
01:13:36.390 --> 01:13:37.091
Thank you to our listeners.
01:13:37.832 --> 01:13:44.483
And we look forward to meeting with all the listeners sometime next week.
01:13:45.323 --> 01:13:48.628
And in the meantime, we wish you the best and that you're all safe.
01:13:49.369 --> 01:13:50.972
And we express our love and appreciation to you all.
01:13:51.033 --> 01:13:51.713
Thank you for listening.
01:13:52.162 --> 01:13:55.314
And that's it for this week's Inside Out.
01:13:55.697 --> 01:13:56.198
Thank you, everybody.
01:13:56.259 --> 01:13:57.262
And thank you to you, Jim.
01:13:58.046 --> 01:13:58.689
Thank you, William.
