00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:09.039
Welcome to She's Honestly Mental, a podcast for women who are done pretending they're fine when they're falling apart on the inside.
00:00:09.039 --> 00:00:16.640
I'm your host, Karina Robinson, ADHD Brain, Medicated Mind, and proud mental health hospital alumni.
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:20.320
Still here, still showing up somehow.
00:00:20.320 --> 00:00:27.039
This is the space for the fillers, the fixers, and the ones who carry it all and still wonder if it's enough.
00:00:27.039 --> 00:00:36.000
We talk about the chaos, the connection, and everything in between because silence nearly killed me, and these conversations save lives.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:41.520
Alright, cacao in hand, headphones on, chaos semi-contained.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:43.679
Let's get honestly mental.
00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:49.600
Hey, just a quick note before we dive in.
00:00:49.600 --> 00:00:53.759
In this episode, we talk about mental health, honestly.
00:00:53.759 --> 00:01:00.640
That includes conversations around suicide, trauma, sexual assault, and some other really messy things.
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:05.040
Please check in with yourself first, make sure you're in the right headspace to listen.
00:01:05.040 --> 00:01:14.719
And if you need support, you can always reach out to Lifeline 131114 or beyond blue on 1300-224636.
00:01:14.719 --> 00:01:17.280
You matter and you're not alone.
00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:21.519
Welcome to episode one of She's Honestly Mental.
00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:23.359
I can't believe it.
00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:27.599
I cannot believe that we are here, that we are recording episode one.
00:01:27.599 --> 00:01:29.280
How wild.
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:33.359
This has been an adventure.
00:01:33.359 --> 00:01:38.000
This is a moment that I am so incredibly grateful to be here to be alive.
00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:48.799
And I mean that in so many ways because for a while there, there was times where I didn't think I'd celebrate my 30th birthday.
00:01:48.799 --> 00:01:56.000
I didn't think that I would be here to celebrate Christmases and those moments with my family.
00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:00.480
Because I truly believed that the world would be better off without me.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:03.760
This is mental illness.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:07.120
These are the conversations that we don't have.
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:10.560
These are the conversations we've been told not to talk about.
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:15.759
These are the conversations that have been built around years of generational trauma.
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:21.439
Years of people telling us, shh, you're too loud, you're too noisy, be quiet.
00:02:21.439 --> 00:02:22.879
Don't say that.
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:25.439
We're not having that anymore.
00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:27.120
We're here to save lives.
00:02:27.120 --> 00:02:29.360
We're here to have these conversations.
00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:31.759
This is what the world needs.
00:02:31.759 --> 00:02:41.439
The world needs more support, more empathy, more kindness, and more caring, and more genuinely being open to listening to people's stories.
00:02:41.439 --> 00:02:44.560
Through stories, we get connection.
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:47.280
And through connection, we get hope.
00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:53.759
We get that feel of actually being cared for, worthy, and loved.
00:02:53.759 --> 00:03:02.240
And if you're in a position right now where you don't feel worthy, loved, or supported, let me tell you this.
00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:04.000
You are worthy.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:06.719
You are loved, and you are supported.
00:03:06.719 --> 00:03:13.919
And if you only hear this from this podcast, I truly hope that it's enough to help you keep going.
00:03:13.919 --> 00:03:20.400
This is a letter that I'd plan to leave behind for my family to find.
00:03:20.400 --> 00:03:28.639
It's a letter I never really plan on sharing with the public, obviously, because when you're in this headspace, why would you?
00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:40.080
But what this letter is is actually a reflection of someone who's deep in the mental health spiral, someone who has given up hope.
00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:45.840
These things that I've written in the letter are things that I truly believed.
00:03:45.840 --> 00:04:00.560
And they're the things that I look back now, the things that I'd said about myself and the things that I believed that truly make me be fucking grateful for being alive and being here in this moment.
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:13.039
But these are the moments that I really know that there's so many people out there that feel the same way, and I just hope by having these conversations that they no longer feel alone.
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:15.199
A letter.
00:04:15.199 --> 00:04:46.560
Every day is a fight with my mind, or a fight because all I want is the best for everyone and to do the right thing, but I'm get so afraid that whatever I do isn't going to be the right thing.
00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:53.839
All I ever wanted to do was help, to fix things, and all I ever did was ruin things.
00:04:53.839 --> 00:05:00.720
I'm always getting myself into a mess, overcommitted, and not able to finish anything.
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:08.000
I've tried for so long to make my mind right, to get rid of this anxiety, to try and help myself, but I can't.
00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:14.079
I know I can't make it go away, and I don't want to spend the rest of my life in this horrible battle.
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:17.360
I won't win, it won't let me.
00:05:17.360 --> 00:05:20.160
I'm just not meant to be here.
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:23.040
This life has always been hard for me.
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:26.160
I've constantly battled my mind and I just can't do it anymore.
00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:30.160
Tried to fix things, but I've just made them worse.
00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:33.279
And no one will ever know how sorry I am.
00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:35.279
I'm a terrible mum.
00:05:35.279 --> 00:05:38.000
These kids deserve so much more than I can give them.
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.000
My husband deserves someone who can love him back more than I can.
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.519
The love that he has for me is incredible.
00:05:45.519 --> 00:05:51.519
Please know that there is nothing that anyone could have done or said that could have changed this.
00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:55.199
The only person to be blamed for this whole mess is me.
00:05:56.240 --> 00:05:57.439
I don't want a funeral.
00:05:57.439 --> 00:05:59.360
I don't want anyone to even know.
00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:01.040
I want to go quietly.
00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:02.800
I am sorry.
00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:04.560
I am so so sorry.
00:06:04.560 --> 00:06:10.079
I don't even really remember the day that I wrote that.
00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:13.360
I don't even really remember the moment that I wrote that.
00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:19.600
But I remember the moment when I decided that that was it for me.
00:06:20.480 --> 00:06:30.399
I remember being with my family and all of the things around me just felt like they were collapsing.
00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:34.959
And they felt like they were collapsing because of my actions and things that I had been doing.
00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:50.879
What I know now, as someone who's been through the process and had help and had support and now diagnosed, is that and I fucking hate this when people are like, you always have a choice.
00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:53.360
You can always choose to not be in a situation.
00:06:53.360 --> 00:07:01.360
But when you are mentally unwell, your brain doesn't function the way that it should be functioning, the way that it is meant to function.
00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:06.639
And I kind of say that loosely because I know that everyone's brains work so differently.
00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:25.040
But mental health, when you are in crisis like this, as I was, when you truly believe that you're struggling and that you're not worthy and that you shouldn't be here and that, you know, no one loves you and all you do is fuck up and make messes and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:28.720
There's just so much emotion around this.
00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:38.560
I think it's when you get to the other side and you get the help and you find that support that you need as you start to claw your way back.
00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:43.199
You realize that it was just the noise that your brain was making.
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:46.000
It's the noise from the outside, the external.
00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:57.920
And I think in this day and age, there's just so much noise around us, so many expectations, you know, sharing my Instagram reels and my highlights instead of actually sharing what is real, R-E-A-L.
00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:01.120
And that's what we've lost.
00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:03.519
You know, where's Martha Stewart?
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:05.439
We're not all Martha Stewart's.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:07.360
My brain doesn't do a Martha Stewart.
00:08:07.360 --> 00:08:11.839
This is just it's life, right?
00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:16.879
And with all the noise, we need to find ways that support us through those days.
00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:24.800
We need to find ways that help our brains the way that our brains are, because just like a thumbprint, no one's brain is the same as the other person's.
00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:27.519
Oh, God, I spiraled.
00:08:27.519 --> 00:08:28.560
I spiraled, sorry.
00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:30.399
Anyway, back to where we went.
00:08:30.399 --> 00:08:33.039
You know, it's just, it's all that.
00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:50.320
It's just that knowing now, the girl that was in that moment, that girl that decided in that moment that that was it, that she had a plan and she was ready to execute the plan, is so grateful that her family noticed in that time.
00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:52.159
Because of course, I didn't share with anyone.
00:08:52.159 --> 00:08:53.600
I hadn't told anyone.
00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:58.639
I was still running a business, I was helping family with their other businesses.
00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:21.200
You know, I was, I had my fingers in so many pies, I was a mom, two beautiful boys, and I was on the P and C and I was doing things at the school, and then I was on all of these committees, and I just had this like gigantic resume of all of these things that I was doing because I felt like if I could do all of these things really well, it would make me worthy and make me feel loved and make people want to acknowledge me.
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:27.039
But instead, I was just reaching for things.
00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:41.440
And on the outside, I was functioning, and on the inside, I was the one laying on the floor in my bedroom, unable to move because I couldn't, I just couldn't brush my hair, brush my teeth.
00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:42.320
I couldn't decide.
00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:53.600
Like I, like, you know, I I I know I need to shower, I know that I I know that I should put that washing on, or I haven't folded this yet, or my floor needs sweeping, and I haven't done those, and why haven't I done those?
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:57.279
Because it makes me such an idiot, and like, how come I can't keep on top of my washing?
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:02.159
And like I just like, why is my house a mess?
00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:03.600
Like, why do I forget appointments?
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:06.879
Or why do I forget to tell people things?
00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:16.720
Or I actually don't necessarily forget to tell people things, but I know the things, and then I don't have the capability to be able to function and to be able to execute those things.
00:10:16.720 --> 00:10:21.200
But if someone else asked me to do it for them, I'd be there in a heartbeat.
00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:29.039
And I suppose that's what it was like for me when I was in that real mental health crisis point.
00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:37.440
That when my family asked me what was really going on, and I said to them, I don't want to be here anymore, I want to die.
00:10:37.440 --> 00:10:43.519
Me being so brutally honest with them, it broke them.
00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:46.080
Broke my husband.
00:10:46.080 --> 00:10:49.120
And I just didn't want to do it anymore.
00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:52.080
It gets heavy, it gets horrible.
00:10:52.080 --> 00:11:24.240
And I just hope that this podcast, this my big scary dream with She's Honestly Mental is to be able to find ways to be able to bring the mental health system to the women, to be able to find ways for women to be able to build a really strong foundation of ways to be able to support themselves and their brains, to meet them where they're at, to then be able to help them build a scaffolding to support them as they get through life.
00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:26.000
What a wild dream.
00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:37.759
And I don't know how that looks just yet, but I know that if I don't start, I'm gonna spend too much time overthinking it and then being like, girl, so here we are.
00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:46.000
I wanted to speak up because when I was first hospitalized for my mental health, I didn't really tell anyone.
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:50.000
I just told my family and some of my very closest friends.
00:11:50.000 --> 00:12:03.440
But as a person who loves to overshare and has a case of verbal diarrhea, which, you know, you guys are going to get that and I will spiral and all of the other things.
00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:17.919
But as someone who has verbal diarrhea and just loves to spill the things, that was really hard for me because I felt like I was really hiding behind this wall and I couldn't be open and I couldn't be honest with anyone.
00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:28.159
And then when I had my second omission, and that was not really one that I expected because I thought after the first one I'd be healed, I'd be fixed, like I'm on my way, I'm totally okay.
00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:29.600
Yeah, lol.
00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:34.399
I really truly felt, I don't know.
00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:46.399
I just kind of shared it online on my Instagram stories, and I was like, hey, so I thought I would just share with everyone that I'm actually in a mental health hospital right now and I'm really struggling, and these are the things that are going on with my life at the moment.
00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:54.480
And um, I kid you not, the amount of messages and support that I got from that, I went, oh crap.
00:12:54.480 --> 00:12:56.799
People actually do like me.
00:12:56.799 --> 00:12:59.200
People actually do honestly care.
00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:04.960
And that was such a powerful moment for me because I felt like I wasn't alone.
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:13.120
And the people that came back to me and said, My gosh, Karina, I really thought I was the only one who struggled with those things.
00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:44.559
And the more I had these conversations, the more I felt this purpose of if I'm the one with the verbal diarrhea and the one that doesn't really have any boundaries when it comes to oversharing, then perhaps this is my gift or my purpose of being able to talk about mental health honestly, start these conversations in ways that actually save lives and help women believe and understand their worth and that how beloved they are.
00:13:44.559 --> 00:13:49.919
So through this podcast, I'm gonna share lots of different conversations.
00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:56.080
I hope that you can start to build and find different ways that support your brain.
00:13:56.080 --> 00:14:00.559
I'm gonna talk a lot about having your own little mental health toolbox.
00:14:00.559 --> 00:14:13.200
It's like you go to the gym and you've got the weights and the treadmill and the squats and all of the rest of it, and you know that these are ways that you can support your physical body, you make sure you eat all the right things and that, you know, an apple day keeps the doctor away, kind of things.
00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:18.240
These are the kind of conversations and the kind of things that I want people to understand about their mental health.
00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:31.600
And if you're listening because you are, you know, you care for someone or you support someone or you just want to understand what it's like from someone who's gone through, lived, had that lived experience of living with mental health.
00:14:31.600 --> 00:14:43.679
I hope that you can get some things out of this to be able to support those people around you, build their own little mental health toolkit, that thing that they can reach to when they're feeling really overwhelmed.
00:14:43.679 --> 00:14:54.399
So, yeah, this is so freaking cool, and I'm so fucking glad to be here in so many different ways, shapes, forms.
00:14:54.399 --> 00:15:11.039
But I've gone from thinking that everyone is better off without me to actually thinking and knowing and believing how lucky I am to be alive and really understanding the true feeling of being alive.
00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:17.519
So I'm here, I'm making this podcast, but beginning a movement.
00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:19.360
I feel like a wanker saying that.
00:15:19.360 --> 00:15:21.440
My God, but this is a thing.
00:15:21.440 --> 00:15:26.879
This is one of the ways that we're going to be able to normalize prioritizing mental health.
00:15:26.879 --> 00:15:29.279
We're gonna be able to normalize having these conversations.
00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:34.320
It's not just gonna be all blue trees and are you okay today, and let's have a little cupcake and talk about it.
00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:36.480
It's not those surface level conversations.
00:15:36.480 --> 00:15:37.679
I'm not here for that.
00:15:37.679 --> 00:15:40.879
I'm here for please tell me all your nitty-gritty.
00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:42.639
Please tell me all the things.
00:15:42.639 --> 00:15:44.159
I wanna know.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:48.080
I want to know because I want to know how I can support you.
00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:58.480
So if you're in your own version of the messy middle, this podcast is a space for you to not feel so alone.
00:15:58.480 --> 00:16:02.159
So, guys, episode one.
00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:04.639
Woo-hoo! This is so crazy.
00:16:04.639 --> 00:16:09.679
I cannot wait to see in 10 years where this is, where this has become.
00:16:09.679 --> 00:16:24.240
And honestly, if it's literally just me and three other listeners or two other people following me on social media, but I know that I've been able to connect with people and normalize these conversations, like I'm done.
00:16:24.240 --> 00:16:26.960
My heart is full and I am done.
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:30.080
So, yeah, thanks for listening.
00:16:30.080 --> 00:16:33.279
Thanks for hanging out with me on She's Honestly Mentor.

00:16:57.039 --> 00:16:58.639
You're just honestly mental.
00:16:58.639 --> 00:17:00.320
And all the best people are.
