00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:05.519
Okay, what is the first step I should take if I'm struggling with crystal meth or chemsex?
00:00:05.759 --> 00:00:07.919
And I say tell somebody.
00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:12.560
Just like you're saying find someone to share it with.
00:00:13.039 --> 00:00:24.640
You know, if you don't want to walk into a 12-step room, tell somebody, and all oftentimes it's the person you're most scared to tell, like mom or best friend.
00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:25.920
Chemsex.
00:00:26.079 --> 00:00:33.439
Sexualized drug use among men who have sex with men, typically involving methamphetamine, methadrone, and GHB, among others.
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:42.799
Chemsex misuse is a worldwide epidemic that needs attention, dialogue, and hope for those lost in it, which is the purpose of the Aftermath Podcast.
00:00:42.960 --> 00:00:51.920
Please note the views expressed by the host and guest on this podcast are not to be taken as medical advice, and the content around sex and drug use can be triggering.
00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:54.479
All right, welcome back to the Aftermath Podcast.
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:59.280
Really excited today to introduce you to a new friend of mine, Daryl Martin.
00:00:59.359 --> 00:01:01.039
I'm going to introduce him here.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:11.519
Um today we're talking about the effects of late bloomers, in terms of those of us more seasoned gentlemen who came out later in life.
00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:15.439
Um, and of course, we're going to get into how that affects chem sex.
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:20.319
And I can um personally identify with this because that's my story.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:21.680
That's what I did.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:25.840
Um, but Daryl is in New York City, and we're gonna, I'm gonna introduce him now.
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:37.760

He lives in New York with his husband, and together they have raised five wonderful children.
00:03:51.919 --> 00:03:52.560
Wow.
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:55.039
It's a mouthful, isn't it?
00:03:56.319 --> 00:03:58.800
That's what happens when you stay on the planet for a while.
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:01.199
Well, you know what?
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:06.639
A lot of people stay on the planet that long, but they don't accomplish those kinds of things either.
00:04:06.879 --> 00:04:13.199
Um yeah, this is I I I've said this season, season three, is the season of big names.
00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:18.000
And really I I count I count you as that, a big name here.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:21.199
Um really glad to have you and your expertise.
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:22.240
Thank you.
00:04:22.399 --> 00:04:23.360
Thank you so much.
00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:24.560
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:25.839
I'm excited.
00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:28.959
Listen, I I'm excited to have this conversation with you.
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:49.519
Um I don't think that this conversation um is really in the zeitgeist just yet, although um there has been a turn, certainly since I've been a young gay man, like the term daddies and bears and all of that has become part of the norm.
00:04:50.639 --> 00:04:56.639
And uh and although, you know, so we got these labels, but we're not talking about it.
00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:08.480
Like what is it like to be a daddy, uh, you know, an Asian gay man um in, you know, at this time in the country, in the cities, wherever people may be.
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:18.800
Um so yeah, so I'm you know very excited to uh just kind of have this conversation, maybe do some exploration with you.
00:05:18.879 --> 00:05:28.240
Uh as you and I both identified earlier uh a couple of weeks ago that there is some scholarship um on this, but not a whole lot.
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:51.600
Um so I really think that you and I and many other clinicians are really on the cutting edge, the sort of uh breakthrough of uh introducing this um as it relates to drugs and uh sex and all the many other uh things that age and gay men navigate.
00:05:51.839 --> 00:05:55.279
Um so yeah, I'm excited about it.
00:05:55.600 --> 00:05:57.040
Yeah, good, great.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:05:57.600
I am too.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:06:17.759
I am too because one one of the first when I was um before recovery and then right after, one of the things, one of the directions I was going to go in instead of this one, was to write a a handbook for older men who come out late in life.
00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:23.279
Because I wish so much I had had a guide, you know.
00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:26.879
I did have a therapist who helped me through the transition.
00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:29.199
Um, but it was different.
00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:47.759
It was it was there was so much to try to work through and process first, you know, that I couldn't get traction, you know, because I had gone all my life without a therapist, you know, and so I came out at 36.
00:06:49.519 --> 00:06:52.079
2013, I was 36.
00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:55.279
Um, and you know, I'd never been to therapy.
00:06:55.439 --> 00:07:10.720
I had gone therapy one time, and he was the only person that I had come out to, he was the first person that I came out to, and I ended up in the mental facility that night for three days or however many hours, 72 hours, whatever it is that you have, you know, you check yourself in.
00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:17.360
Um because he'd, you know, and when I got there, the nurse was like, So, and this is how she said it.
00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:20.160
So, what's up with the gender confusion?
00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:29.920
You know, so I don't know where that came from, but whatever this therapist, whatever this therapist I had gone to gotta was all wrong.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:41.680
And he's a Christian, he was a Christian therapist, so um, but I, you know, I was just thrust into this community, this I don't know if it's a community anymore.
00:07:41.920 --> 00:07:44.959
I I I I just say want to say a population.
00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:54.639
There was a population of gay men that I was thrust into um in a world so separate from what I had been used to.
00:07:55.439 --> 00:07:58.800
And I I just I got eaten up by it.
00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:04.319
You know, there was so much that I hadn't handled yet, that I hadn't processed yet.
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:10.800
And there was one thing going through my mind, and that was I have to make up for lost time.
00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:14.079
I have to make up for lost time.
00:08:15.120 --> 00:08:15.600
Yeah.
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:16.319
Yeah.
00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:32.320
And that thing I I love that you're saying that because that is um one of the sort of mental uh attitudes of some of the age and gay men who that I work with who have come out late is making up for this lost time.
00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:37.440
And uh I I want to say, enter drugs, right?
00:08:38.320 --> 00:08:38.960
Yeah.
00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:39.519
Yeah.
00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:47.440
Because sort of those those feelings of um inadequacy, having to make up for lost time.
00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:56.559
Um drugs has a way of sort of quelling those uh inhibitions and those insecurities.
00:08:56.799 --> 00:09:22.240
And so it just makes um psychological sense, you know, sometimes uh because um I found that other people, you know, uh don't quite have the judgment around their use as much as my clients who are Asian gay men and you know got into you know using drugs uh sort of later stage in life.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:26.240
And you know, one of the things is that oh oh I know better.
00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:29.600
Like I'm an older gay man or I'm an older man.
00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:31.360
I I know I should know better.
00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:33.840
You know, how did I let myself get here?
00:09:34.960 --> 00:09:42.240
And I always say no one you know is born and says, okay, I'm gonna be a drug addict when I grow up.
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:43.519
You know what I mean?
00:09:43.840 --> 00:10:07.679
Like so, so just sort of um orienting them around uh, of course, you know, drugs uh was an accessible, uh I I don't want to say easy, but certainly an accessible way of um navigating those feelings while in real time while you're in it.
00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:10.159
Because it's it's very different.
00:10:10.320 --> 00:10:17.039
Um, you know, when you're young and you decide, oh, I'm gonna go out, I'm gonna, you know, party, I'm gonna do blah, blah, blah.
00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:19.039
You think you have all this time in the world.
00:10:19.200 --> 00:10:25.200
I, you know, I can always recover later, or yeah, it's gonna take me a few days or something like that.
00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:42.799
But gay men in general, um, uh age and gay men in general, I think they really feel this sort of sense of loss, uh, meaning that they've wasted time and they really want to catch up in a way.
00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:48.240
And I think that's what the drugs and and the alcohol included does.
00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:58.240
It it kind of quells the mind a little bit, eases the mind a little bit so that you can say, like, okay, I'm good, we're good, you know.
00:10:59.440 --> 00:11:21.120
Until the parties uh increase, the drugs increase, the sexual experiences begin to expand, and um and then there's this sort of perpetuating cycle because uh although they're in it and they're doing it, they still are very aware that they are older, you know.
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:37.200
Um and so I think that also plays into the isolation around uh meth use and uh cocaine drugs in general, is that um I I've said this before, and I say this many, many times.
00:11:37.279 --> 00:11:43.679
Yeah, drugs, uh crystal meth again gives us the illusion of power.
00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:50.080
And um and one of the things is uh it's uh uh shame.
00:11:50.159 --> 00:11:59.200
I I was thinking about this uh podcast coming when I was coming to work today, and I was thinking about shame and addiction.
00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:05.840
And uh I've always posited that shame and addiction lives in secrecy.
00:12:06.159 --> 00:12:10.000
It it needs secrecy in order to bloom.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:29.120
But as soon as you start to spread the light, as soon as you start to talk about it with another gay man or a therapist or someone like yourself or myself, that uh from the very moment uh they begin to start talking about it, the healing begins.
00:12:29.360 --> 00:12:35.360
A lot of people think they have to be in therapy for years and you know, before the healing happens.
00:12:35.840 --> 00:12:45.679
But I'm of the school that healing can begin the moment you step into the room, the moment you start to tell another person.
00:12:45.919 --> 00:12:55.200
So it could be with us, like you and I, professionals, or it could be in meetings, in you know, a 12-step meeting or a recovery group.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:13:11.679
Um, but once they start to talk about it, all of a sudden the addiction doesn't quite have the hold, and the shame uh isn't as deep uh as it was before they said something.
00:13:12.080 --> 00:13:23.440
So that's sort of the miracle that you bring to the world, that I bring to the world, um, and many 12-step programs is kind of pulling that person.
00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:29.679
Um what are you you talk about the decompensation sort of bottom period, you know?
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:43.279
And just by a client walking into the room or getting online with you and just talking, talking about who they are, how they're feeling, all of it like you can see the shifts.
00:13:43.360 --> 00:13:53.679
And I'm not gonna say that, you know, we both know that it's not uh magic, you know, they don't instantly become, but certainly the journey begins.
00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:54.399
Yeah.
00:13:54.799 --> 00:13:56.159
Yeah, I love that.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:57.039
I love that.
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:09.840
And one thing that I've I've said a lot is crystal meth, you know, and and you could say this for addiction, but for chemsex, it's like black mold, just like you're saying, it grows in the dark.
00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:10.399
Right.
00:14:10.639 --> 00:14:14.559
But once you start putting light on it, you know, it smothers it.
00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:16.000
It can't it can't grow.
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:21.120
And like you're saying, for addiction, it releases the hold because it's not in secret.
00:14:21.279 --> 00:14:31.600
I I I would I think, I mean, this is the world according to Dallas, but in terms of secrecy, crystal meth has got to be the one that's kept in secret the most.
00:14:32.159 --> 00:14:32.480
You know?
00:14:32.639 --> 00:14:32.799
Yeah.
00:14:33.039 --> 00:14:35.759
I mean, opioids get all the attention.
00:14:36.080 --> 00:14:41.360
You know, marijuana, you can say marijuana, I smoke marijuana, I I have a drinking problem.
00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:46.399
Even heroin is kind of it it you're not even really I I don't know.
00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:50.559
I don't maybe it's because my world is smaller, but I don't even hear a lot about heroin anymore.
00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:57.120
But meth is just something that you want to keep in secret because it's so stigmatized.
00:14:57.519 --> 00:14:57.919
Yeah.
00:14:58.720 --> 00:15:09.679
Um and so I I've always asked in podcasts and otherwise, if okay, what is the first step I should take if I'm struggling with crystal meth or chemsex?
00:15:09.840 --> 00:15:11.600
And I say tell somebody.
00:15:12.399 --> 00:15:16.559
Just like you're saying find someone to share it with.
00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:21.200
If you don't want to walk into a 12-step room, tell somebody.
00:15:21.279 --> 00:15:29.600
And all oftentimes it's the person you're most scared to tell, like mom or best friend, right?
00:15:29.759 --> 00:15:30.399
Or partner.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:31.679
But guess what?
00:15:31.840 --> 00:15:34.639
They mu most of the time they already know.
00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:37.600
They already have their suspicions anyway.
00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:46.080
But getting it out of here and through through your mouth and sharing with somebody, like you said, what a what a burden that lifts.
00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:46.879
Yeah.
00:15:47.120 --> 00:15:50.159
You know, and then you can start the healing process.
00:15:50.799 --> 00:15:51.440
Yeah.
00:15:52.320 --> 00:16:16.480
The other things is that, you know, uh crystal meth is an insidious drug, meaning that um I have found that uh sometimes people uh are able to hide it for long periods of time because uh you know, many people who um uh have used or before they got addicted to it, uh really could function on it.
00:16:16.799 --> 00:16:23.039
So they could go to work, they could, you know, get up in the morning, do what they need to do.
00:16:23.279 --> 00:16:31.759
Whereas, you know, the other drugs are like cocaine, you it you in order to keep the high, you need to keep reintroducing the drug and keep snorting.
00:16:31.919 --> 00:16:34.720
Heroin, you're gonna nod out, you know, at work.
00:16:34.879 --> 00:16:37.840
Alcohol, you're gonna, you know, smell and nod out.
00:16:38.080 --> 00:16:53.759
But uh crystal meth is what makes it particularly insidious, is that um, I mean, doctors prescribe Adderall and all sorts of methamphetamines um for people who are challenged with ADHD.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:17:04.559
And so, you know, a lot of the times before they get to my office, they've they've been going for a very long time.
00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:07.920
And in some ways, crystal meth has served them.
00:17:08.559 --> 00:17:14.640
Like I've had clients say, Oh, I'm able to get my work done, I'm able to concentrate.
00:17:17.039 --> 00:17:33.119
So, so yeah, so uh I'll I'll stop there with, but I I I wanted to put a plug in for uh like you said, crystal meth is is a little different from the other things um because of the insidious nature of the drug.
00:17:33.359 --> 00:17:33.519
Yeah.
00:17:33.920 --> 00:17:35.039
Yeah, yes.
00:17:35.359 --> 00:17:40.480
Yeah, and you know the drug is no respecter of persons, crystal meth.
00:17:40.559 --> 00:17:48.880
You have the homeless man using it, you also have the CEO of a major company using it.
00:17:49.839 --> 00:17:55.039
And so the thing, these men come to me, they're highly successful in their life.
00:17:55.279 --> 00:18:03.039
I mean, running their business, their family, their friends, they're I don't know what they they have all this going, but they can't seem to stop using.
00:18:03.440 --> 00:18:08.000
And I tell them, they're like, why am I good at everything else but crystal meth?
00:18:08.079 --> 00:18:10.160
I said, You're good at crystal meth.
00:18:10.559 --> 00:18:13.680
You're you're functioning while using crystal meth.
00:18:13.759 --> 00:18:16.000
That's that's skill, right?
00:18:16.400 --> 00:18:25.440
Like you said, like it it's it is insidious in terms of you can maneuver it so that you only use enough to function.
00:18:26.160 --> 00:18:28.000
And you're using it as Adderall.
00:18:28.559 --> 00:18:28.960
Right.
00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:29.440
Right.
00:18:29.680 --> 00:18:36.240
Um, which is what a lot of heterosexual women that contact me are using it for.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:47.279
Keep their weight down, keep the house clean, keep the kids going where they need to go, feel better about themselves, have the energy it takes to be a woman in today's world.
00:18:47.920 --> 00:18:51.279
And it's not used for sex, but it's used for that.
00:18:51.359 --> 00:18:57.359
You know, it's like, I mean, it used to be bottled in the 50s, like mommy's little helper, and you know, amphetamines, right?
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:14.160
Um the the problem is that crystal meth has now changed into this super meth, um, where it's highly psychosis provoking and paranoia provoking, and it's highly it's more addictive and it's more pure.
00:19:14.559 --> 00:19:18.319
And so we can't fuck around with it as much as we could.
00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:19.599
And that's what I'm seeing.
00:19:19.759 --> 00:19:29.039
These CEOs coming to me, these doctors, these psychiatrists, they're like, I don't know what's going on, but I can't, like I can't go, I can't stop going for days now.
00:19:29.440 --> 00:19:35.200
And it's beginning to be more out of control because the substance is different too.
00:19:35.839 --> 00:19:37.440
Um you know what I mean?
00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:39.200
Um yeah.
00:19:39.519 --> 00:19:41.519
So it's a pro yeah, go ahead.
00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:49.359
You you got I was just gonna say, uh, in addition to uh what we didn't have before was this sort of cross-pollination of drugs.
00:19:50.079 --> 00:19:53.359
Crystal meth and Viagra, crystal meth and cialis.
00:19:54.799 --> 00:20:02.400
Uh with cocaine, you know, years ago, if you did too much, you know, you get limp dick, you can't function.
00:20:02.640 --> 00:20:02.960
Yeah.
00:20:03.519 --> 00:20:14.960
But because of uh all of these other pharmaceutical drugs that you can get, you know, from your doctor, um, and especially with aging uh gay men, it's very easy.
00:20:15.039 --> 00:20:26.720
Like you know, um it used to be a lot harder to get, you know, erectile dysfunction drugs, but now you can click on a website when you know, and have it delivered to your door.
00:20:28.400 --> 00:20:41.119
So uh that toll, like that drugs used to take, like uh uh for cocaine, for instance, um a lot of older gay men aren't seeing that, you know.
00:20:41.279 --> 00:20:46.480
They so if they start to, you know, get erectile dysfunction, they take a pill.
00:20:46.720 --> 00:20:48.480
So that can keep them going.
00:20:48.559 --> 00:20:50.400
And now they they're virile.
00:20:50.799 --> 00:20:57.920
You know, you and I were talking about virility and the illusion of virility, you know, on crystal meth.
00:20:58.160 --> 00:20:58.559
Mm-hmm.
00:20:58.960 --> 00:20:59.599
Yeah.
00:20:59.920 --> 00:21:00.400
Yeah.
00:21:00.720 --> 00:21:13.359
Which, you know, I I think Crystal Myth is the the perfect storm for a gay man, but especially an older gay man who has been closeted his whole life.
00:21:13.519 --> 00:21:22.480
You know, like for me, I had to pretend, I had pretended my whole life I was someone different, and now here's my chance to be free.
00:21:22.960 --> 00:21:35.039
But what but what I ran into, which is again, I think the other men that I talked to are the same a lot of times, is what I ran into was the population did not accept me.
00:21:36.240 --> 00:21:48.559
Like I I had this idea that this is where I belonged, and when I didn't belong, I spiraled out of emotionally saying, Where the hell do I belong then?
00:21:48.720 --> 00:21:50.000
I belong nowhere.
00:21:50.240 --> 00:21:59.279
And like you said earlier, enter drugs, enter crystal meth, because I'm older, I have a house, I have money, this is where I belong.
00:21:59.440 --> 00:22:02.079
Everybody Flocking to me now.
00:22:02.640 --> 00:22:02.960
Right.
00:22:03.200 --> 00:22:04.960
They can't get enough of me.
00:22:05.440 --> 00:22:06.000
Right.
00:22:06.319 --> 00:22:06.880
Yeah.
00:22:07.200 --> 00:22:11.039
And I have access to Viagra and Cialis and Trimix.
00:22:11.599 --> 00:22:12.079
You know?
00:22:12.319 --> 00:22:16.960
Let me just inject everybody's dick and we'll be hard for two or three hours.
00:22:17.200 --> 00:22:22.559
Um, and it just feels like I finally got what I wanted.
00:22:22.880 --> 00:22:24.960
This is the life I've been wanting.
00:22:26.079 --> 00:22:26.559
Right.
00:22:26.880 --> 00:22:27.680
And that's true.
00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:32.799
I mean, uh, again, it when we walk towards something, we're walking away from something else.
00:22:33.119 --> 00:22:54.400
So that illusion of validation uh that we're getting, um, and I really call it an illusion of validation because, like you said, um aging gay men experience being exploited by younger gay men for the resources that they can provide, you know?
00:22:54.799 --> 00:22:59.039
Um and uh and like you said, I have money, I have a house.
00:22:59.279 --> 00:23:15.759
Um and I, you know, it it it's it's funny because um the same sort of questions that older gay men enter, like who come out late, um, are questions that young young gay men have as well.
00:23:16.079 --> 00:23:32.319
You know, meaning like they come into the world, even as young gay men, who am I, how do I fit, how do I necessarily fit the Chelsea boy, masculine, you know, Tama Finland uh imagery that we that we see.
00:23:32.559 --> 00:23:42.240
So you know, if I'm effeminate, if I'm a person of color, um now I'm dealing with with that, you know, as well.
00:23:42.960 --> 00:23:47.200
So um the questions are very similar, young and old.
00:23:47.440 --> 00:23:47.920
Interesting.
00:23:48.240 --> 00:23:49.359
Young and old.
00:23:49.519 --> 00:23:59.039
Um, but it's it's the the enter the drugs that we seem uh to find um instant answers.
00:23:59.200 --> 00:24:02.640
I call it add water and stir solutions.
00:24:03.039 --> 00:24:03.680
You know?
00:24:04.240 --> 00:24:08.160
As soon as you as soon as you you know they take the hit, they're like, okay.
00:24:08.480 --> 00:24:09.119
Yep.
00:24:09.920 --> 00:24:40.880
Um I I want to ask you a question about um I often uh work with clients um and when they tell me about their experience um with sex, particularly on crystal meth, um they talk about uh this phenomenon of being really horny and you know certainly seeking out the sex and wanting the sex, but even when they get it, they're so removed uh emotionally from it.
00:24:41.119 --> 00:24:45.279
So they'll be having sex thinking about the next conquest.
00:24:45.440 --> 00:24:47.759
Like when is this person gonna leave?
00:24:47.920 --> 00:24:57.359
Uh and maybe you can uh speak more from a personal experience of what that's like and what goes on.
00:24:57.599 --> 00:25:08.079
Uh I I I think that that comes from we I I believe that we have a bit of a misunderstanding about the effect of dopamine.
00:25:08.799 --> 00:25:14.240
Like we call it a reward molecule, but it's really the anticipation of a reward.
00:25:14.640 --> 00:25:15.119
Right.
00:25:15.359 --> 00:25:15.759
Right?
00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:16.319
Right.
00:25:16.960 --> 00:25:26.079
And and so that we 1200 times the the amount of dopamine gets released when you take crystal meth.
00:25:26.720 --> 00:25:32.240
And I believe that all of it, all of it is this anticipation of what I'm going to get.
00:25:32.559 --> 00:25:42.000
This is why we have men sitting around for hours on their phone looking for the next guy when they are surrounded by men.
00:25:43.759 --> 00:25:45.839
I need it's anticip I need more.
00:25:45.920 --> 00:25:49.039
I we're gonna have an orgy, we're gonna have this, we're gonna have that.
00:25:49.200 --> 00:25:56.799
And even when you're yeah, even when you're having sex, I when I when I was having sex, I could not stay off my phone.
00:25:57.039 --> 00:26:01.599
If I was topping, if I was bottoming, whatever it was, I I had this in my face.
00:26:02.319 --> 00:26:02.640
Right.
00:26:03.680 --> 00:26:06.319
On Grinder trying to find someone else.
00:26:06.480 --> 00:26:09.279
What if I miss the next hottest guy?
00:26:09.440 --> 00:26:10.000
Right?
00:26:10.319 --> 00:26:27.599
And and then and and then it even goes into the porn, the anticipation of the porn is that you'll see guys for hours trying to find the right porn to put on, or adjusting the settings of the of the picture and the color.
00:26:27.680 --> 00:26:30.079
And then then you've got Zoom, right?
00:26:30.480 --> 00:26:34.480
These Zoom rooms where you're all using together.
00:26:34.799 --> 00:26:39.119
There's this more and like who else is in the room, who else is in the room.
00:26:39.359 --> 00:26:47.440
So I believe it's we have to understand this dopamine, what it does is that we're never going to get there.
00:26:47.759 --> 00:26:52.640
You know, it's like it's why you you feel like you're gonna come for hours.
00:26:53.200 --> 00:26:54.640
You're right on the edge.
00:26:54.880 --> 00:26:58.000
I tweaked out on I tweaked out on that so many times.
00:26:58.160 --> 00:27:02.880
I would beat my dick to death because I was just right there.
00:27:03.440 --> 00:27:06.640
I I was I it would just give me a minute, just give me one more second.
00:27:06.799 --> 00:27:08.240
An hour goes by.
00:27:08.559 --> 00:27:09.039
You know?
00:27:09.519 --> 00:27:14.480
And this this I'm gonna get this reward, I'm gonna get this reward, I'm gonna get this reward.
00:27:14.559 --> 00:27:16.400
And so, and then you take more and more.
00:27:16.480 --> 00:27:19.599
And so I think that that's the disconnection.
00:27:20.480 --> 00:27:26.799
It is we just there's no presence because there's an anticipation, there's a desire for something else.
00:27:27.200 --> 00:27:27.599
Wow.
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:27.920
Yeah.
00:27:28.319 --> 00:27:31.680
Wow, that's so uh beautifully put and so helpful.
00:27:31.839 --> 00:27:44.240
Um so it's it's sort of uh what you're describing is this sort of anticipatory stage um that uh meth amphetamine keeps you in.
00:27:44.480 --> 00:27:44.720
Yeah.
00:27:44.960 --> 00:27:56.559
So um, and uh by staying in the anticipatory stage, you keep the dopamine going, both chemically and uh naturally.
00:27:57.200 --> 00:28:03.920
Um, but it it it really isn't about the actual uh fix itself.
00:28:04.480 --> 00:28:04.640
Yeah.
00:28:04.880 --> 00:28:10.720
And that that's interesting because that is a huge difference from other drugs.
00:28:11.039 --> 00:28:17.839
Whereas heroin, you hit it, you hit the sweet spot and you're nodding and all that stuff.
00:28:18.160 --> 00:28:20.720
So you've arrived at the place.
00:28:21.440 --> 00:28:25.759
Um, but with crystal meth, you never quite arrive.
00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:30.640
And it's this sort of cyclical experience of uh anticipation.
00:28:30.880 --> 00:28:34.640
That I mean, that's that's beautiful, uh beautiful Dallas.
00:28:34.799 --> 00:29:06.400
Um and I think it'll help other uh people who work uh with you know, people who are struggling with this challenge to understand the end because that that is um one of probably the most common thing I hear as a therapist is that like I'm on I was on my phone for five hours before that two-minute uh experience where the guy came over and left, and then I'm back on my phone, you know.
00:29:06.880 --> 00:29:07.759
Yeah, that's right.
00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:08.240
Yeah.
00:29:08.480 --> 00:29:08.799
Yeah.
00:29:09.039 --> 00:29:11.039
And it's not a hundred percent, you know.
00:29:11.119 --> 00:29:18.160
I mean, you're you I I can hear the guys now writing in saying, now wait a minute, you know, when I use it, we fuck, and you know, that kind of thing.
00:29:18.319 --> 00:29:32.000
I it there are a small majority of men who seem to be able to take a certain amount just enough to get really horny and and and still get hard, too.
00:29:32.240 --> 00:29:35.599
They're the unicorn, they're the unicorn, they're the popular boys at the party.
00:29:35.839 --> 00:29:39.599
You know, they have the line because they they have they can get hard.
00:29:39.680 --> 00:29:44.079
Because you know, sometimes even with Viagra Cialis, you're you you can't get hard still.
00:29:44.240 --> 00:29:45.839
No, Trimix is different.
00:29:45.920 --> 00:29:56.720
But the thing about Trimix is how many times have I seen guys rush to the emergency room because they're injecting their dick while high, putting in too much, and their dick explodes almost, you know.
00:29:56.880 --> 00:29:57.440
Yeah.
00:29:57.680 --> 00:30:01.519
Um, and so uh yes, I mean that's for the most part, that's it.
00:30:01.599 --> 00:30:16.880
And that is why also euphoric recall is so powerful when it comes to chemsex, is that it releases that dopamine, that anticipation gets so high that I'm gonna, this is the time.
00:30:17.039 --> 00:30:24.240
I'm gonna have an orgy, I'm gonna get gangbanged, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do that, you know, I all this stuff's gonna happen.
00:30:24.400 --> 00:30:34.160
You know, it's it's this this whole you're you you start thinking about it and your body starts releasing all that dopamine, all that adrenaline, and you're swept away by it.
00:30:34.319 --> 00:30:39.119
You're you know, you're just swept away, and then you're you just switch off into autopilot.
00:30:39.200 --> 00:30:44.640
This gets cut off because you know, arousal in and of itself shuts down the prefrontal cortex.
00:30:45.279 --> 00:30:49.200
So and this is a drug that's tied to arousal.
00:30:49.519 --> 00:30:52.960
So you mix the two together, you're not thinking.
00:30:53.200 --> 00:30:54.559
You're just not thinking.
00:30:54.720 --> 00:30:55.759
You're not in control.
00:30:56.640 --> 00:30:57.279
Right.
00:30:57.599 --> 00:31:07.920
I that that which brings us to the sort of the relapse nature of crystal meth, meaning that um understanding the anticipatory stage.
00:31:08.079 --> 00:31:13.279
So even before people pick up, like we always say, you picked up long before you picked up.
00:31:13.519 --> 00:31:13.920
Well, yeah.
00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:14.240
Yeah.
00:31:14.480 --> 00:31:14.799
Right?
00:31:15.039 --> 00:31:18.319
Yeah, uh, you slipped long before you slip.
00:31:18.480 --> 00:31:29.440
Um and so uh thinking about it and helping people understand that this is sort of what's going on in my body right now, this anticipatory stage.
00:31:29.920 --> 00:31:37.200
Because um you can get that anticipatory dopamine before you even pick up the drug.
00:31:37.519 --> 00:31:37.759
Yeah.
00:31:38.079 --> 00:31:41.200
Which then in turn, you know, brings you to the drug.
00:31:41.680 --> 00:31:42.160
That's right.
00:31:42.400 --> 00:31:42.640
Yeah.
00:31:42.799 --> 00:31:46.559
And that's where that that euphoric recall comes into play.
00:31:46.880 --> 00:31:52.240
And with crystal meth, everything has been etched and printed.
00:31:52.400 --> 00:31:57.759
Each each memory, each time you used, you really, it's hard to forget.
00:31:58.480 --> 00:32:02.319
And I could tell you, it's been eight years for me in August.
00:32:02.640 --> 00:32:07.680
And I still will, and it's that twilight time of when I'm lying down for a nap.
00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:15.200
I'll I nap every day, or I'm lying down for sleep, memory will a memory will flood in.
00:32:15.440 --> 00:32:22.400
Vibrant, such a vibrant, clear memory of using, you know, in some scenario with somebody.
00:32:22.640 --> 00:32:37.119
Because you just you it's not like blackout drunk, or like you said, nodding off with heroin, or you know, people who smoke marijuana all the time, they they can't they can't remember the the conversation they just had five minutes ago.
00:32:37.359 --> 00:32:46.400
You know, but with this, it's so etched into the brain, too, that euphoric recall has more power because you're right in it.
00:32:46.640 --> 00:32:58.480
It's like a like a putting on a real uh one of those what virtual reality masks is you're you're right back in it and you're in it too, and and like you said, the the the body, it's just a full body takeover.
00:32:58.640 --> 00:33:00.400
I call it you're being possessed.
00:33:00.559 --> 00:33:02.559
You know, you're possessed at that point.
00:33:02.799 --> 00:33:10.640
Um, and that's why that's why it's important to have your phone blocked, to not have access to user buddies.
00:33:10.880 --> 00:33:20.319
You know, this is why you put these safeguards in your life is because it gives you a pause and uh and a lot of times enough pause to wake up.
00:33:20.640 --> 00:33:20.880
Right.
00:33:21.119 --> 00:33:24.559
To say, oh, whoa, whoa, you know, I'm gonna get out of this trance.
00:33:25.359 --> 00:33:30.000
And really think about what the next li what the next day or two is going to be like if I go use.
00:33:30.640 --> 00:33:31.519
That's right.
00:33:31.920 --> 00:33:32.799
That's right.
00:33:33.039 --> 00:33:33.759
That's right.
00:33:33.920 --> 00:33:47.359
Um, the ability to think it through, as we always say, um, you know, what's the next and uh again, that's the insidious nature is that uh a lot of the times people can function on it.
00:33:47.680 --> 00:33:55.519
So the next day or two from alcohol, you know, blackouts could be in the bed, you know.
00:33:55.920 --> 00:34:08.639
Um whereas crystal meth, you know, you get two hours of sleep, you wake up, you do a little more, just a little to get you going, and then it's off to the races, all all over again.
00:34:09.039 --> 00:34:09.280
Yeah.
00:34:09.519 --> 00:34:13.599
Um it's right.
00:34:14.079 --> 00:34:14.719
Yeah.
00:34:16.000 --> 00:34:31.119
This this idea, by the way, this anticipatory idea of as an older man, so we hear a lot, we see a lot of studies about older men exploiting younger men.
00:34:31.199 --> 00:34:38.800
And by the way, there's a huge rise in older white men exploiting young black and brown men.
00:34:39.280 --> 00:34:47.280
So, because I, you know, I got a lot of I used to get a lot of comments on uh still do sometimes social media that meth is a white man's drug.
00:34:48.639 --> 00:34:51.440
And and and it might have been before.
00:34:51.679 --> 00:34:52.960
I can't speak to that.
00:34:53.119 --> 00:35:02.480
But I know based on the research, it's it's rising rapidly with brown and black men, but younger brown and black men.
00:35:02.719 --> 00:35:03.280
Yeah.
00:35:03.519 --> 00:35:03.760
Right.
00:35:04.320 --> 00:35:12.000
And it's cheap, it lasts a long time, they get to go into daddy's big house, right?
00:35:12.079 --> 00:35:13.280
And they're wanted.
00:35:13.440 --> 00:35:15.199
Like you're saying, like, who am I?
00:35:15.360 --> 00:35:22.239
If you're facing here's the thing about chemisex, I think it is a mirror reflection of what we're seeing in our population.
00:35:23.440 --> 00:35:26.079
We can't blame anybody but ourselves.
00:35:26.639 --> 00:35:27.119
Mm-hmm.
00:35:28.159 --> 00:35:31.280
Because as an older white man, I'm rejected by the population.
00:35:31.440 --> 00:35:33.840
As a young brown man, I'm rejected by the population.
00:35:34.000 --> 00:35:35.440
Where else do I go?
00:35:35.920 --> 00:35:39.679
If I'm not taught the skills to accept myself.
00:35:40.079 --> 00:35:42.639
Like you said, enter drugs.
00:35:43.119 --> 00:35:43.440
Right.
00:35:43.679 --> 00:35:44.079
Right.
00:35:44.320 --> 00:35:44.639
Yeah.
00:35:44.880 --> 00:35:45.119
Right.
00:35:45.760 --> 00:35:47.199
Wow, that's beautiful.
00:35:47.360 --> 00:35:53.679
Um and I uh I guess I I I'd also, you know, want to touch on this is very new.
00:35:53.760 --> 00:36:05.840
I don't know if you're seeing uh clients or this is coming into your uh practice, but um there's like this new sort of uh thing where uh drugs are mixed.
00:36:06.079 --> 00:36:12.239
So uh just in the past uh month or two, I've been hearing terms like 2C.
00:36:12.559 --> 00:36:13.119
2C.
00:36:13.280 --> 00:36:19.360
Um yeah, and I had no idea about 2C two months ago.
00:36:19.679 --> 00:36:30.559
Um and so um just uh thinking about um how people are, like I said, cross-pollinating drugs.
00:36:30.719 --> 00:36:31.920
It's so funny.
00:36:32.159 --> 00:36:43.599
Um the way drugs happen is that like we take drugs to take us somewhere, and then we get there and we want to come down, right?
00:36:43.760 --> 00:36:45.760
Because we're too up there.
00:36:46.000 --> 00:36:57.840
So now we're doing something to bring us back down, and we're always seeking that sort of state of homeostasis that we had before everything was introduced.
00:36:58.239 --> 00:37:04.320
And homeostasis, yeah, homeostasis doesn't mean that we're not sad or angry or having feelings.
00:37:04.480 --> 00:37:15.119
It just means that, you know, we're balanced uh in a way that we're something externally like a drug uh isn't taking us up or down.
00:37:15.519 --> 00:37:23.519
And so there's this this cycle of you know trying to get back to the place where we started.
00:37:25.039 --> 00:37:25.360
Yeah.
00:37:25.679 --> 00:37:26.159
You know?
00:37:26.639 --> 00:37:27.199
Yeah.
00:37:27.440 --> 00:37:29.039
Yeah, I can see that.
00:37:29.679 --> 00:37:30.480
So thinking of it.
00:37:30.960 --> 00:37:31.119
Yeah.
00:37:31.280 --> 00:37:31.599
Go ahead.
00:37:32.639 --> 00:37:33.280
No, you go ahead.
00:37:33.360 --> 00:37:34.159
You're thinking of what?
00:37:34.559 --> 00:37:46.480
I so I was thinking that uh when you were talking earlier, is that um this sort of uh anticipatory um experience, right?
00:37:46.719 --> 00:37:53.199
So once you're in that experience, you you're off to the races, like you it's starting to build up.
00:37:53.440 --> 00:38:03.679
And um, and that might be the intervention point, meaning noticing when the dopamine starts to flood.
00:38:03.840 --> 00:38:04.159
Yeah.
00:38:04.320 --> 00:38:04.559
Right?
00:38:04.719 --> 00:38:05.039
Yeah.
00:38:05.199 --> 00:38:40.480
We start our heart starts to race before we pick up the phone, before we um I I'd like to, if you can, or if you're willing to um talk more about um the pragmatic side of managing um sobriety, we could say, you know, I I I don't mean sobriety in as an abstinence, um but sort of you talked about uh you know getting rid of all the contacts, um the erasing grinder and all of that off of your phone.
00:38:41.039 --> 00:38:45.440
Um uh what are some of the other ways that you find?
00:38:46.000 --> 00:38:46.639
Yeah.
00:38:47.039 --> 00:38:57.760
So and I I I want to add a caveat to that is oftentimes men will get a new phone number, get a new phone, block grinder, block the contacts too soon.
00:38:58.400 --> 00:39:06.239
Because here's the thing, methamphetamine has been proven to have the highest uh the highest relapse rate of any drug.
00:39:06.320 --> 00:39:10.159
And then if you look at the chemsex relapse rate, it goes even higher.
00:39:11.280 --> 00:39:20.880
Again, it's a drug that's fused with sex, desire, libido, and we're men with a lot of sex, desire, and libido.
00:39:21.679 --> 00:39:33.760
But not only that, is that like for me and for that young brown man, chem sex becomes a world where we finally feel accepted.
00:39:34.480 --> 00:39:41.760
It's a culture with ritual, uh with its own language, its own app, Zoom channels.
00:39:42.000 --> 00:40:10.960
It's it's where we get to step out of this world we're living in today into this subculture where uh we love, we we we have fun, we were we're we we get to be that bad boy, we get to be free of internalized homophobia, we get to be, you know, the sexual fantasy, this this unstoppable sexual machine, even if it's all in our head, for a minute we get we get to be that.
00:40:11.920 --> 00:40:18.800
And we get to escape emotional pressure, um, we get minority stress, you know, all of that.
00:40:18.960 --> 00:40:21.519
We get to escape that for a a moment.
00:40:22.400 --> 00:40:28.320
And so when you're giving up chemsex, when you're in chemsex recovery, you're not just giving a drug up.
00:40:29.440 --> 00:40:37.840
You're you're saying goodbye to this whole identity that to you you had been looking for all of your life.
00:40:38.239 --> 00:40:38.719
That's right.
00:40:38.960 --> 00:40:41.920
And and that's what I that's what I couldn't let go of.
00:40:42.880 --> 00:40:44.159
Like, how dare you?
00:40:44.320 --> 00:40:46.960
I've been closeted all my life.
00:40:47.519 --> 00:40:52.079
I tried the gay scene, I I have and I've arrived here.
00:40:52.239 --> 00:40:58.000
Yes, I'm injecting meth, but this is the first time I felt relief.
00:40:58.960 --> 00:41:04.000
You know, and so how dare so now I have to give this up for for what?
00:41:05.199 --> 00:41:08.639
Because I I can't go back to that life.
00:41:09.360 --> 00:41:21.039
You know, and so and that is what happened to me is when I finally was in recovery for a year and a half, I'm standing at the kitchen sink looking at dirty dishes, and I'm like, I I can't do this again.
00:41:21.599 --> 00:41:27.199
This this I can't have this boring life because I had not discovered who I really was.
00:41:27.920 --> 00:41:30.400
You know, I hadn't taken that time to do that.
00:41:30.719 --> 00:41:34.880
So I the relapse rate is really high for many reasons.
00:41:35.039 --> 00:41:39.519
Number one is you're you have to grieve and and switch a whole identity.
00:41:39.760 --> 00:41:40.239
That's right.
00:41:40.880 --> 00:41:44.320
And number two, it's everywhere, especially if you're in New York City.
00:41:44.719 --> 00:41:46.480
Just walk down the street.
00:41:46.960 --> 00:41:56.239
You know, you can tell, you can tell, I could tell when I was there, the men who are glued to their phone and they're tweaking out and they're looking at you, like I I know what they're doing and where they're going.
00:41:57.039 --> 00:42:01.440
You know, and so it's and it's uh you you talked about accessibility.
00:42:01.840 --> 00:42:04.320
It it's basically an instacart drug.
00:42:05.039 --> 00:42:10.800
You know, you can get on get on grinder and be using with somebody in 30 minutes or or less.
00:42:11.599 --> 00:42:14.000
So it's not that easy to stop.
00:42:14.159 --> 00:42:18.079
And so I I I think, and this is research-based too.
00:42:18.239 --> 00:42:22.480
You can, if you all, if you're listening and you don't believe me, go do the research.
00:42:22.800 --> 00:42:42.719
Harm reduction in the form of tapering off managed use, that those techniques are more um impactful and successful for long-term chemsex recovery than any other way, especially abstinence-based recovery programs.
00:42:43.280 --> 00:42:43.519
Right.
00:42:44.400 --> 00:42:47.280
I think you you want to get in the 12 steps, do it.
00:42:47.840 --> 00:42:51.920
But you can't expect to walk in a room and then never use again.
00:42:52.400 --> 00:42:54.159
It's just not going to happen.
00:42:54.320 --> 00:42:55.599
Not with chemsex.
00:42:56.800 --> 00:42:57.360
That's right.
00:42:57.519 --> 00:43:05.599
And so it it it for for my guys, it once I tell them, oftentimes there's men that come to me who've been using for 20 years.
00:43:05.840 --> 00:43:09.679
And all I have to tell them is if you use, it's fine, no problem.
00:43:10.159 --> 00:43:15.679
We're not starting days over here, we're not ranking anything, we're learning, and we're moving on.
00:43:16.880 --> 00:43:18.800
Oftentimes they'll never use again.
00:43:18.960 --> 00:43:19.920
They just stop.
00:43:20.559 --> 00:43:33.119
You know, because that pressure or that stress and that strain and that, you know, all of that that's pounding on them for I can't use, I can't use, I can't use, you know, all of that is just swept away with one comment of it's fine if you use.
00:43:33.679 --> 00:43:37.519
Oftentimes, you have to use to learn how not to use.
00:43:39.679 --> 00:43:40.159
Say more.
00:43:40.639 --> 00:43:41.199
Yeah.
00:43:41.440 --> 00:43:51.599
You you have to go through a relapse, oftentimes, and learn from it so that you know how not to use the next time.
00:43:51.840 --> 00:43:54.079
It is part of the journey.
00:43:54.400 --> 00:43:55.119
That's right.
00:43:55.519 --> 00:43:56.960
Um, it it just is.
00:43:57.039 --> 00:44:02.719
I mean, and but the thing is that when it's treated as Failure, pass or fail.
00:44:03.039 --> 00:44:05.039
We don't get what we learn from it.
00:44:05.679 --> 00:44:09.360
And you're going to keep going back to it until you learn from it.
00:44:10.000 --> 00:44:18.400
Because there's something in there, there's something in there that's telling you you there's somehow that you need to show up differently.
00:44:18.719 --> 00:44:21.599
You know, there's there's some modifications to make in your life.
00:44:21.679 --> 00:44:24.639
So pragmatically, you know, what is it?
00:44:24.800 --> 00:44:26.239
Um, it could be anything.
00:44:26.400 --> 00:44:29.599
It could be on the weekends, I'm gonna go stay with mom.
00:44:30.719 --> 00:44:35.840
Um, you know, when I go out to an event, I'm gonna make sure that I have a buddy to go home with.
00:44:36.079 --> 00:44:44.960
And I'm not, you know, because a lot of guys, they they have a group of friends that are sober and they all go out and they'll go out into the bars and stuff, but at 2 a.m.
00:44:45.119 --> 00:44:46.239
they go home, but he doesn't.
00:44:46.320 --> 00:44:51.199
He goes off by himself and goes to use, you know, engaging chemsex.
00:44:51.280 --> 00:44:55.840
So you have a friend committed to stay home with you, or you stay home with them, or whatever.
00:44:55.920 --> 00:45:07.360
That there are ways to, you have to pretty much give up your privacy for a while, but there are pragmatic ways to make it so that you do not have a choice to use.
00:45:07.840 --> 00:45:17.840
Because you cannot rely on willpower, motivation, or self-control, because those are finite resources that run run out late at night.
00:45:18.000 --> 00:45:22.480
And late at night is when you want to use chemsex and when you have the temptations to use.
00:45:22.559 --> 00:45:24.159
So you're out of those things.
00:45:24.400 --> 00:45:24.880
That's right.
00:45:25.039 --> 00:45:26.079
So, what what do you do?
00:45:26.239 --> 00:45:30.000
You build enough safeguards so you don't have a choice.
00:45:30.239 --> 00:45:33.119
Because if you have a choice, you're going to use.
00:45:33.599 --> 00:45:33.920
Yeah.
00:45:34.159 --> 00:45:37.440
You know, and so it takes a lot of planning.
00:45:37.760 --> 00:45:46.639
That's why a lot of men don't want to do it, but it takes a lot of proactive planning to look at your calendar, and you can you know when your danger zones are going to be.
00:45:46.719 --> 00:45:49.039
You know when you're most likely going to use.
00:45:49.599 --> 00:45:56.400
And when you know that, you put in the safeguards so that in the fences and the boundaries so that you can't.
00:45:56.960 --> 00:45:57.599
Right.
00:45:58.079 --> 00:46:11.199
And when I have clients who who talk about the struggles and how they can't, and or even they'll they'll sometimes get really angry with me by saying that, you know, this is just too much.
00:46:11.360 --> 00:46:18.400
This is, you know, having to bookend every uh time I leave the house, having to, you know.
00:46:18.719 --> 00:46:26.400
Um, I always say, just uh remember what you did to get the high.
00:46:27.199 --> 00:46:28.719
So do you think this is work?
00:46:28.880 --> 00:46:36.880
Staying on the uh your cell phone for five hours, jerking your dick for, you know, six hours till it's raw.
00:46:37.280 --> 00:46:39.199
Like that's a lot of work.
00:46:39.360 --> 00:46:47.119
And I I often say that it takes work to be actively uh in addiction.
00:46:47.360 --> 00:46:48.400
It's a lot of work.
00:46:48.559 --> 00:46:52.960
You're managing, you're you know, trying to make up for the money that you lost.
00:46:53.039 --> 00:46:56.960
You know, sometimes you're in put yourself in unsafe situations.
00:46:57.199 --> 00:47:09.119
Um and so uh in comparison to like, oh, maybe I'll stay at mom's this weekend, or maybe I'll take a buddy with me to that event, or maybe I won't go to that event.
00:47:09.760 --> 00:47:15.840
Like some things I tell clients, like, there are just some things you just can't do right now.
00:47:16.159 --> 00:47:16.400
Right.
00:47:16.559 --> 00:47:16.960
Right now.
00:47:17.119 --> 00:47:25.280
Not saying that you'll never be able to go to another white party, but if you can just say right now, do I need to go to the white party?
00:47:25.440 --> 00:47:32.000
Do I need, you know, what are what are the sort of chances that's gonna pull me back into it?
00:47:32.239 --> 00:47:45.280
Um before we go, I I I also I want to touch on the um the detangling of the sex from because often with older gay men, like you said, they feel more virile.
00:47:45.519 --> 00:47:48.800
And so as humans, we want to have sex.
00:47:49.119 --> 00:47:49.760
You know what I mean?
00:47:50.000 --> 00:47:52.239
We are sexual beings by nature.
00:47:52.400 --> 00:47:53.920
It's the way we are made.
00:47:54.239 --> 00:48:03.519
So um because people associate sex with meth, they think like once meth stops, sex stops.
00:48:03.679 --> 00:48:04.000
Yeah.
00:48:04.159 --> 00:48:14.079
And so learning how to have sex without uh that sort of the without the drug, that's been uh an amazing journey.
00:48:14.239 --> 00:48:22.800
Uh a lot of my clients find that I'm too candid because sometimes I go, I skip, I say, okay, let's put the drugs aside for a minute.
00:48:22.880 --> 00:48:24.000
Let's talk about sex.
00:48:24.559 --> 00:48:26.559
Let's like what are you into?
00:48:26.719 --> 00:48:27.440
What do you like?
00:48:27.599 --> 00:48:29.440
What do you you know?
00:48:29.679 --> 00:48:29.840
Yeah.
00:48:30.159 --> 00:48:37.280
Um and when they start to sort of do that exploration of what they really like, not what's expected of them.
00:48:37.519 --> 00:48:43.440
So just because you are a man of color and you got a big uncut dick does not mean you have to be a top.
00:48:43.840 --> 00:48:44.400
That's right.
00:48:44.559 --> 00:48:44.800
Yeah.
00:48:45.119 --> 00:48:45.440
You know?
00:48:45.840 --> 00:48:46.239
That's right.
00:48:46.480 --> 00:48:46.639
Right?
00:48:46.800 --> 00:48:46.960
Yeah.
00:48:47.280 --> 00:48:56.320
But but but a lot of people, when they come into uh relationship to others, automatically stereotype them into that.
00:48:56.559 --> 00:49:02.079
And so they'll do it because that gets them the acceptance, right?
00:49:02.480 --> 00:49:02.719
Yep.
00:49:02.960 --> 00:49:03.679
And that's right.
00:49:03.840 --> 00:49:12.480
And and so I I uh there there's a sort of phase of detangling life from the drug.
00:49:12.880 --> 00:49:16.400
So uh detangling work from the drug.
00:49:16.559 --> 00:49:27.599
Because some people it's like they know they're going into a stressful meeting, they know they have a long day, you know, they're like, oh, this will definitely get me, or even a hard conversation.
00:49:27.760 --> 00:49:29.280
I get that all the time.
00:49:29.519 --> 00:49:38.239
Like, oh, I knew I was gonna have a hard conversation or something, and this regulates me in order to have that conversation.
00:49:39.119 --> 00:49:47.039
So, so kind of uh um orienting them in yes, you're gonna have sex.
00:49:47.280 --> 00:49:47.519
Yeah.
00:49:47.840 --> 00:49:49.440
You need to have sex, right?
00:49:49.599 --> 00:49:51.280
You know, you need to work.
00:49:51.679 --> 00:49:53.440
Um and how can we do that?
00:49:53.599 --> 00:50:00.159
How how can we do that without uh needing or thinking that we need this other thing?
00:50:00.559 --> 00:50:01.199
Yes.
00:50:01.519 --> 00:50:02.000
Yeah.
00:50:02.239 --> 00:50:02.559
Yeah.
00:50:02.880 --> 00:50:04.639
Can impotence be okay?
00:50:04.880 --> 00:50:05.199
Right.
00:50:05.599 --> 00:50:06.880
For you know what I mean?
00:50:07.039 --> 00:50:10.960
Like maybe you won't get hard, but does that mean that you're not enjoying yourself?
00:50:11.199 --> 00:50:11.440
Right.
00:50:11.599 --> 00:50:12.639
Does that mean, you know?
00:50:12.960 --> 00:50:13.840
Yeah, yeah.
00:50:14.159 --> 00:50:14.480
Yeah.
00:50:14.559 --> 00:50:18.320
I I just think it's more standards that we're getting from the population.
00:50:19.199 --> 00:50:19.760
You know.
00:50:20.239 --> 00:50:22.400
Again, you went back to daddy.
00:50:22.880 --> 00:50:30.880
You know, at the in the very beginning, I I I was like so uncomfortable with being called daddy because I had only been called daddy by my children.
00:50:31.440 --> 00:50:44.800
You know, and I just thought I thought of my kids every time somebody said daddy, but now it's just like I'm on the hen, I'm on Hinge, the dating app, and that's the first thing that they're that's that's the hello is hi daddy.
00:50:45.119 --> 00:50:47.599
You know, no matter how old they are.
00:50:48.000 --> 00:50:51.360
Um, it's like I have to be daddy, like you're saying.
00:50:51.519 --> 00:50:54.960
I have to be daddy if I want to have sex, pretty much.
00:50:55.199 --> 00:50:55.519
Right.
00:50:55.760 --> 00:51:01.360
Whether whether I'm top, whether I'm a bottom, you know, uh uh younger guys, they don't a lot of them don't care.
00:51:01.440 --> 00:51:07.360
They'll top a dad, they love to top a daddy, or they like to be topped by a daddy, you know, but I'm daddy either way.
00:51:07.760 --> 00:51:08.159
Right.
00:51:08.400 --> 00:51:17.039
And um, but it's just it just feels so so oftentimes it just feels so forced and expected.
00:51:17.679 --> 00:51:35.519
Here it's so funny to me that we have a population of men who are trying to go against and break sociocultural norms, but then they want to comply to gay sociocultural norms.
00:51:36.079 --> 00:51:43.119
I have to dress like this, I have to read you, I have to act like this, I have to be, you know, I have to be a twink, I have to be a daddy.
00:51:43.280 --> 00:51:46.559
Like we're doing the same thing.
00:51:47.119 --> 00:51:52.159
And it's driving us into creating our own culture where we don't have that.
00:51:52.320 --> 00:51:58.159
Yes, there's daddy in the chemsex world, but for the most part, it's everybody's in it.
00:51:58.320 --> 00:52:13.760
You know, everybody's doing their own thing, having, you know, and I just it it's just it it it can be frustrating for me as dating as an older, you know, I'm I'm I'll be 50 in a couple of months, um, trying to date.
00:52:13.920 --> 00:52:17.039
And it's like, okay, let me guess.
00:52:17.199 --> 00:52:21.840
I bet you want me to choke you, spit on you, slap you around.
00:52:22.079 --> 00:52:32.000
I uh I let me just let me just tell you already what you're gonna ask for, because every other man, every other man is asking me to do that, because I want they need me to be Dom Top Daddy.
00:52:32.320 --> 00:52:32.639
Right.
00:52:33.360 --> 00:52:33.760
Right.
00:52:34.079 --> 00:52:36.000
And it it it really is.
00:52:36.159 --> 00:52:41.679
You just when you think of daddy, you think of caretaker, protector, you know.
00:52:42.000 --> 00:52:51.760
Um, and so a lot of uh these sort of labels, like you said, I I've been called poppy before I was a poppy, like I was 17.
00:52:52.000 --> 00:52:54.800
So hey poppy, poppy, poppy.
00:52:55.360 --> 00:53:02.960
And and I I learned, like you said, I learned um how to uh come into that role.
00:53:03.119 --> 00:53:15.199
I learned that, okay, if I am a poppy, then they will like me, then they will accept me, then um, and underneath all of it is connection.
00:53:15.440 --> 00:53:15.840
Yeah.
00:53:16.079 --> 00:53:17.599
Underneath it all, yeah.
00:53:18.320 --> 00:53:20.320
All humans want connection.
00:53:20.480 --> 00:53:22.159
We don't do well alone.
00:53:22.400 --> 00:53:28.079
Our species is designed to be in connection to each other.
00:53:28.159 --> 00:53:30.719
It's how we protect ourselves, it's how we survive.
00:53:31.199 --> 00:53:44.320
No one can, you know, so um meth as a vehicle to connection um is, I have found, sort of the under underpinning of it all.
00:53:44.639 --> 00:53:44.880
Yeah.
00:53:45.119 --> 00:53:55.599
Um and uh and just like I say we have to detangle sex from meth is we have to find connection outside of meth.
00:53:56.400 --> 00:53:56.639
Yeah.
00:53:56.880 --> 00:54:21.760
You know, so uh so I often find that people who have the willingness to come into relationship with others h have the higher higher uh percentage of um being successful uh uh away from that, you know, I don't want to again, I don't want to say abstinence, but in recovering.
00:54:21.920 --> 00:54:22.239
Yeah.
00:54:22.480 --> 00:54:50.880
Um like finding community finding community so important, even if it's a community of ex-meth users, you know, or community of aging gay men, some kind of uh community that's gonna give you a sense of belongingness, a sense of, you know, when we think of Maslow's uh triangle, that sort of sense of belonging is is right in the middle there, root, you know.
00:54:50.960 --> 00:54:56.159
Yep after you hit safety, you know, belonging is right there.
00:54:56.400 --> 00:54:59.679
So yeah, I agree, I agree.
00:54:59.840 --> 00:55:03.840
We had a um God, I forgot his name.
00:55:03.920 --> 00:55:14.880
But anyway, a gentleman from the UK who has been running chemsex groups, and he said, like, uh they they found over time that most of the guys just wanted to date.
00:55:15.039 --> 00:55:16.800
They just wanted a connection, right?
00:55:16.880 --> 00:55:17.679
That's what it is.
00:55:17.920 --> 00:55:22.239
But you said something very important that I want the listeners to hear willingness.
00:55:22.960 --> 00:55:40.079
So to me, if you want to talk about sexual, you know, getting back on the horse sexually, you want to talk about reintegrating and re and untangling and diffusing and connecting and and being happy in recovery, it all starts with the willingness to believe that it's possible.
00:55:42.079 --> 00:55:51.039
Because if you come in and you say, I'm never gonna have Tina sex again, I'm always gonna have vanilla sex again, I'm never gonna be able to do this, then yes, that's what you'll get.
00:55:51.519 --> 00:55:54.079
That is what you'll get what you're looking for.
00:55:55.119 --> 00:56:04.079
Open your mind up to the possibility and understand that meth was all about instant gratification, everything, instant gratification.
00:56:04.480 --> 00:56:12.320
So if you want to be somebody who doesn't use meth, then you're gonna have to get used to delayed gratification in every sense of the word.
00:56:12.480 --> 00:56:22.320
And that means taking time to build a connection, taking time to get to know your body again, taking time to connect your head and your dick again.
00:56:22.480 --> 00:56:24.480
Like it takes time.
00:56:25.519 --> 00:56:27.440
And I understand, I understand.
00:56:27.519 --> 00:56:36.480
I had a friend who took a year of abstinence on his journey after his he broke up with his partner, and he's he's reaping the benefits of it now.
00:56:36.719 --> 00:56:39.280
And I told him, I was like, yeah, but you're in your 30s.
00:56:39.360 --> 00:56:42.239
I said, if I took a year of abstinence off, it's like 10 years.
00:56:42.480 --> 00:56:48.719
You know, because in my mind I'm still I I'm still running on that borrowed time.
00:56:49.119 --> 00:56:53.199
There's still some of that in me of I have time to make up.
00:56:53.280 --> 00:56:54.159
Like I'm almost 50.
00:56:54.239 --> 00:56:56.000
I can't take a year of abstinence.
00:56:56.239 --> 00:56:59.760
That's you know, that's a big chunk of what's left.
00:57:00.079 --> 00:57:01.280
But that's not true.
00:57:01.440 --> 00:57:02.480
But it's not true.
00:57:03.119 --> 00:57:03.599
Exactly.
00:57:03.840 --> 00:57:06.559
But it is that voice running in the back of my mind saying.
00:57:07.360 --> 00:57:07.840
Yeah.
00:57:08.079 --> 00:57:18.800
And undoing that voice, I always tell uh my clients, uh, in every sense of the word, I say, you're not going to think your way out of this.
00:57:19.119 --> 00:57:19.519
Yeah.
00:57:19.840 --> 00:57:28.880
Because if it took the intelligence and all that, all m all of my clients, uh 100% of them are bright and intelligent people.
00:57:30.159 --> 00:57:45.039
And so uh thinking that this that they're gonna be able to think their way, like if I just you know read the right book, you know, if I do boom, boom, boom, then uh you have to act your way out of this situation.
00:57:45.199 --> 00:57:50.079
So yes, it doesn't feel good, but act like it does.
00:57:50.400 --> 00:58:03.920
You know, like so normally, you know, uh it having sex, you know, on meth probably would be instantly more gratifying, but uh it doesn't mean you don't have sex.
00:58:04.480 --> 00:58:06.800
You know, you don't do the meth and have the sex.
00:58:08.000 --> 00:58:11.119
Just keep acting your way into this.
00:58:11.440 --> 00:58:19.920
This is not um this is not gonna be you can't you're not gonna like pray the gay away, just like you're not gonna pray the meth away.
00:58:20.239 --> 00:58:20.880
That's right.
00:58:21.119 --> 00:58:21.360
Yeah.
00:58:21.679 --> 00:58:22.559
You know that's right.
00:58:22.719 --> 00:58:23.119
Mm-hmm.
00:58:23.360 --> 00:58:24.239
Exactly right.
00:58:24.800 --> 00:58:25.039
Yeah.
00:58:25.440 --> 00:58:32.000
Well, well, Daryl, we we got a little off topic today, but what do you think we missed in terms in this discussion?
00:58:32.159 --> 00:58:37.360
What do you what do you wish we would have mentioned or talked about that we might not have touched on?
00:58:38.320 --> 00:58:40.079
Um I d I don't know.
00:58:40.239 --> 00:58:53.760
I I'm pretty satisfied in the sense of of you know, we only have but so much time and we are uh touching on very overarching uh sub uh subjects and experiences.
00:58:54.000 --> 00:58:56.719
So I'm very I'm very satisfied.
00:58:56.880 --> 00:59:14.639
Um I think you know, if we ever come back together, I I would love to focus in on uh the men of color aspect and the experiences of being uh a gay man of color and navigating uh crystal meth.
00:59:14.880 --> 00:59:30.880
Uh because like you said, uh statistics are showing, you know, that more and more men of color are starting to be introduced to this drug uh unawares of you know the sort of pitfalls that can lie before them.
00:59:31.519 --> 00:59:36.320
Um so yeah, I think that's the only that's the only topic that I would expand on.
00:59:36.719 --> 00:59:38.400
Well, let's do that for sure.
00:59:38.559 --> 00:59:40.480
Because that's a subject we haven't touched on.
00:59:40.639 --> 00:59:42.159
It's a subject that I don't know.
00:59:42.320 --> 00:59:47.599
I I don't know, you know, I don't have a lived experience with, but you know, I I I see the studies.
00:59:47.760 --> 00:59:57.280
Um I have had several men of color lined up to come on the podcast and they've canceled on the la at the last minute.
00:59:57.599 --> 00:59:58.079
Yeah.
00:59:58.320 --> 01:00:08.880
Um and so I don't you know that's an interesting phenomenon, I think, too, is that there's a little there's some fear there, I think, about coming and making it public.
01:00:09.440 --> 01:00:16.559
Um, and I'm sure there's I'm sure there's a lot of cultural stuff involved in there that I don't know about.
01:00:17.599 --> 01:00:18.559
Right, right.
01:00:18.880 --> 01:00:32.320
And I I'd love to to be sort of a stepping stone or vehicle into that exploration with you because there it is um it does have some unique aspects uh to it.
01:00:33.119 --> 01:00:43.519
You and I talked about this, you know, in our pre-interview a couple weeks ago about uh you know black men and doctors and medical, all of those things.
01:00:44.000 --> 01:00:45.039
Yeah, that's right.
01:00:45.199 --> 01:00:46.800
Yeah, it'll be interesting.
01:00:47.039 --> 01:00:49.199
Yeah, definitely, definitely.
01:00:49.440 --> 01:00:56.639
And so now that's a teaser for the for the listeners for the tune in when you see Daryl on here again.
01:00:57.760 --> 01:00:58.239
Exactly.
01:00:58.400 --> 01:00:58.559
All right.
01:00:58.719 --> 01:01:00.960
All right, guys, I hope you enjoyed this conversation.
01:01:01.119 --> 01:01:02.960
Daryl, thank you so much for being here.
01:01:03.679 --> 01:01:04.480
Appreciate it.
01:01:04.880 --> 01:01:28.800
I did very much, and thank you for the work that you do and for being out there and also the vulnerability that you bring to the work is very, very amazing and and quite unique, especially especially because you know, some we're taught in school, you know, uh only the use of self only at you know certain times.
01:01:29.199 --> 01:01:34.159
But you yeah, you do the use of self from the beginning to the end.
01:01:35.199 --> 01:01:37.199
And I think that's what makes it special.
01:01:37.360 --> 01:01:39.119
I think that's what makes it special.
01:01:39.280 --> 01:01:40.480
So thank you.
01:01:40.960 --> 01:01:41.840
Thank you so much.
01:01:42.000 --> 01:01:42.880
I appreciate that.
01:01:43.039 --> 01:01:43.599
Appreciate that.
01:01:44.159 --> 01:01:44.960
All right, all right, guys.
01:01:45.039 --> 01:01:48.320
If you want to join in the conversation, you could comment on Spotify or YouTube.
01:01:48.719 --> 01:01:49.519
I appreciate that.
01:01:49.679 --> 01:01:55.920
If you want to DM Daryl directly, we'll put his contact information in the show notes, and you can DM me anytime.
01:01:56.000 --> 01:01:59.039
I'm on social media, everywhere, at all times.
01:01:59.599 --> 01:02:03.039
Probably three times a day I'm posting stuff.
01:02:03.119 --> 01:02:04.239
So can't get enough.
01:02:04.400 --> 01:02:04.719
All right.
01:02:04.800 --> 01:02:07.280
Thanks, Daryl, and everybody will see all next week.
01:02:07.519 --> 01:02:08.559
Thank you, thank you.
01:02:08.800 --> 01:02:09.519
Ciao
