TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:12.080
Welcome everybody to another episode of the Directed IRA podcast.
00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:13.279
My name is Mark Kohler.
00:00:13.359 --> 00:00:20.800
I'm here with Matt Sorns, the author of the best-selling book on self-directed IRAs in America with a news flash.
00:00:20.879 --> 00:00:21.760
This is a big deal.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:23.440
Matt, bring us up to speed.
00:00:23.760 --> 00:00:24.879
Yeah, this is a big deal.
00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:27.280
There's a new bill coming out of Washington, D.C.
00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:28.800
That's usually not good news.
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:31.519
And in this case, this is not good news.
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:34.240
There are lawmakers in Washington, D.C.
00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:38.159
that want to limit your self-directed IRA.
00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:42.640
This has been reported by the Wall Street Journal just yesterday.
00:00:43.359 --> 00:00:45.280
Senator Wyden in the U.S.
00:00:45.439 --> 00:00:55.840
Senate and Representative Neal in the House of Representatives, these are leading Democrats on both sides, I used to say on both houses of Congress, the House and the Senate, not on both sides of the aisle.
00:00:56.479 --> 00:01:13.040
But they are not happy about how a lot of tech investors and venture capital investors are using self-directed IRAs to amass fortunes, tax-free, using the same old IRA 401k strategies that have been around for years, and they don't like.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:15.200
They've got a lot of money in these accounts.
00:01:15.599 --> 00:01:17.439
So they're targeting them with the new bill.
00:01:17.840 --> 00:01:31.040
And the irony of it is they want to allow congressmen and senators to continue to trade their own portfolios with insider information that seem to be very well-timed.
00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:44.319
But heaven forbid an entrepreneur gets a high-value IRA brewing because they went out and worked hard and created a business with value and had their IRA invest in one of these projects.
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:50.480
I it just baffles me how Congress can think this is okay.
00:01:50.719 --> 00:01:55.200
I I just love the American way and the American dream, but let's limit it.
00:01:55.359 --> 00:01:56.959
Let's try to try to stifle.
00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:01.840
Yeah, if you're doing, if you're if it actually works out for you, we don't want it to be that great.
00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:03.519
We need to put a cap on it.
00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:04.959
So it's only this this good.
00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:08.000
So um, but here's let me unpack the proposal.
00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:10.240
There's some good news and bad news on this.
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:14.479
The good news is they didn't restrict anybody's ability to self-direct.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:27.520
If you guys remember back, build back better, back during the Biden administration, there was a bill proposed that said, hey, um, your IRA can't invest in private companies where you have to be an accredited investor.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:36.879
And they were trying to put all these restrictions to basically make it hard for you to use your self-directed IRA to invest in a privately traded company, which is what we do every day at directed IRA.
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:44.479
If you're new to this show, by the way, our customers use their IRAs to buy real estate, private companies, small businesses, private lending, crypto.
00:02:44.639 --> 00:02:49.039
These are all assets your IRA can own, and they always have been from forever ago.
00:02:49.280 --> 00:02:57.280
There's been a lot of people that have made tens, hundreds, billions of dollars in these accounts with very successful investments using Roth IRAs.
00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:02.080
This has caught the attention of Congress and a lot of Democrats in Congress who don't like that.
00:03:02.319 --> 00:03:06.479
Now, the the specific bill here doesn't do anything on self-directing.
00:03:06.639 --> 00:03:09.680
They didn't try to touch that and say to restrict your ability there.
00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:10.400
So I'm happy there.
00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:11.039
That's the good news.
00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:17.120
So for all of you that self-direct your IRA or planning to, you're not affected, don't worry.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:35.199
But if your account's over 10 million or more, or you're planning on it being over 10 million or more, or that's your goal, this bill wants to limit your ability to have a tax-advantaged account, Roth IRA, traditional IRA, even 401k, any retirement savings account, go over$10 million.
00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:39.199
Again, I'm trying to find a good example or metaphor for this.
00:03:39.360 --> 00:03:41.120
Like, okay, the Olympics.
00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:48.159
We want to limit people's ability to use steroids to have an unfair competitive advantage.
00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:50.000
Okay, I can live with that.
00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:54.719
But in this situation, it everybody has the same opportunity.
00:03:54.960 --> 00:04:06.719
Congressmen, senators, and all of us at any age in America can go out and work hard, self-direct, and maybe invest in a new company, a new idea, and get lucky.
00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:08.960
Maybe sometimes we're unlucky.
00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:16.160
But we all have the same opportunities, the same risks, the same rewards, and we just don't want you to be too successful.
00:04:16.399 --> 00:04:24.079
So I'm just, again, probably the biggest advocate for the free market to allow us to invest in what we know best.
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:35.519
And so if there's a message here, I want many of you to know is that your IRA can grow based on your investment choices to whatever level of success you can achieve right now.
00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:36.480
That's the law.
00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:37.759
I'd like to keep that.
00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:39.120
Matt, are you voting for this?
00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:40.079
You're not voting for this, right?
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:42.399
Yeah, I mean, the sky's the limit, right?
00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:56.399
And I think my perspective on this, and just from a policy standpoint, is instead of looking at this as which is how the these certain Democrats have looked at this, not to be political here, but these specific Democrats, and not all Democrats are on board with this, by the way.
00:04:56.560 --> 00:04:57.920
This this is not going to pass.
00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:00.399
This has no life to it, but it's out there.
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:05.199
So I want to talk about it for anybody self-directing or building a retirement savings.
00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:08.800
Is this mentality is backwards?
00:05:09.199 --> 00:05:18.480
Why are we looking at these people that have done great in their retirement accounts that have built a large amount of money at them and saying, we shouldn't we shouldn't let this happen?
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:23.199
We should be looking at this for everyone else and saying, how can we get other people to do this?
00:05:23.360 --> 00:05:26.399
How can we get other people's accounts to be larger?
00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:31.600
Instead, it's like, how do we hold them back down to to where everyone else is at?
00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:34.560
And I think that's the uh the wrong wrong way to approach this.
00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:36.959
And I'm Matt Sorns and I approve of this message.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:42.720
Do you Matt, do you think Wall Street chimes in enough on this?
00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:48.879
I think sometimes I feel, and I'm I'm not I don't consider myself a huge conspiracy theorist.
00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:56.560
I really don't, but sometimes I think Wall Street wants everyone's 401 to be successful, but not too successful.
00:05:56.720 --> 00:05:58.800
Don't don't dream too big people.
00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:02.079
Let us just invest your 401k or your IRA.
00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:04.639
We're gonna make it just right for you.
00:06:04.959 --> 00:06:13.600
But these mega IRAs really aren't in the lane of a lot of broker dealers to create and allow for.
00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:22.399
So I wanted to ask you, do you think they're chiming in as a big proponent or uh against it, or they just be in Switzerland?
00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:26.160
Like, well uh No, I think they're definitely against it.
00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:44.639
Um why why limit the success and even you know institutions last time on this, the retirement industry in general, Wall Street, you know, all their lobbying groups in DC, they were all against this and um and kind of took the perspective at in investing, we have a free market.
00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:46.639
Someone could wipe out and go to zero.
00:06:46.720 --> 00:06:51.839
Is the government coming in to bail you out if your investments don't go well to say, hey, well, here's some money?
00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:56.639
But no, when you do too well, they don't want you to have the benefits of the retirement account because you did too well.
00:06:56.720 --> 00:06:58.480
It worked out too good for you.
00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:02.319
So there's no like, you know, it's a free market.
00:07:02.399 --> 00:07:05.040
We've said, hey, you make your own decisions.
00:07:05.199 --> 00:07:06.160
These are your dollars.
00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:08.639
This is not a pension plan or social security.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:09.600
These are your dollars.
00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:18.240
You're deciding to save this, you're deciding how to invest in this, and you get the benefits or the downsides based on your decisions on how that turns out.
00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:29.120
And I think that's in general, like, you know, how we've done individual retirement accounts and even 401ks with your participant accounts where everyone decides where to allocate it.
00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:35.600
Um, you may have limited investment options in your 401k, but you at least get to make the decisions with amongst what's on the menu.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:38.319
And so so I they're definitely against it.
00:07:38.399 --> 00:07:44.720
And so the so the bad news is they want to limit you to 10 million bucks.
00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:50.240
And if you go over that, by the way, you have to withdraw 50% within a year and 100% like within two years.
00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:54.639
Um, for anyone over 10 million, this wouldn't go into effect for five years.
00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:59.360
So you'd have until 2033 to get in compliance on this to draw your account down.
00:07:59.600 --> 00:08:01.199
Um, but that's so that's the bad news.
00:08:01.279 --> 00:08:01.839
That's a proposal.
00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:06.160
But I think the the other side of the good news is they've already tried this.
00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:11.040
It didn't pass last time when they were in the White House, when they had the Senate, and they had the House.
00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:14.399
Democrats couldn't pass it because even Democrats don't want this.
00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:19.519
Even a majority of Democrats did not want to let this pass and didn't feel like this this was right.
00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:20.959
So we'll see.
00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:23.439
Um, it's out there, want to talk about it.
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:26.480
It's in the Wall Street Journal, pretty heavy coverage there.
00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:31.199
Um, and I know it affects a lot of our listeners here that are saving, and we do have some clients that have large accounts.
00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:39.600
I mean, the average account here is 160 grand, but we do have a good number of accounts, you know, over 10 million that this could definitely affect.
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:42.799
Um, so we want to certainly cover it here on the podcast.
00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:43.440
Yeah.
00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:50.480
And I, if you're we have new listeners, new viewers to our YouTube channel or listeners to our podcast every week.
00:08:50.639 --> 00:09:12.720
And if you're new to this show, please know that we give you uh as explicitly as possible and transparently as possible, the steps you can take to take your Roth IRA, your old 401k, your Roth, whatever tax-preferred account you might have, and take steps to invest it in a startup company that you believe in.
00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:39.120
And please go back to the first 10 episodes of our podcast or just start scrolling through some of the titles, and you'll see podcasts specifically uh dedicated to explaining how to take your IRA and move it to a without tax and without penalty to a custodian like our trust company, direct to an IRA, direct to trust company, where you can invest in these types of ideas and projects.
00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:41.279
Be careful, do your research.
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:42.879
But we're here for you.
00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:51.679
We and we've got a podcast just packed with information on how to maybe hit the lottery and get lucky with a great idea.
00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:52.960
The lottery?
00:09:53.039 --> 00:09:55.120
That's probably not the example they use there.
00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:56.879
Man, I don't know.
00:09:57.039 --> 00:09:59.679
Invest in She took it to gambling, you know.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:03.600
Well, there's a lot of people that think Wall Street is gambling.
00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:04.960
That is true.
00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:05.440
That is true.
00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:11.039
When you buy stock in a new startup that's worth, you know, penny stock level, who knows?
00:10:11.120 --> 00:10:11.919
You know, I don't know.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:12.960
But yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:17.840
No, I mean I think that's you know, some of that startup investing is kind of high risk, high reward.
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:19.519
Most of those startups fail.
00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:23.600
And so the ones that have done well, why punish those people that have had big returns on it?
00:10:23.840 --> 00:10:28.399
I think a lot of the tried and true stuff people do with the self-directed IRA is they buy real estate.
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:32.159
You know, that real estate's the asset that's made more millionaires than anything else.
00:10:32.240 --> 00:10:34.159
It's literally not going anywhere.
00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:42.559
Um, and so whether that's the single family rental down the street that your IRA owns or a private real estate fund or you're doing private lending with your real estate.
00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:45.600
I mean, those are much lower risk assets.
00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:50.159
They might not go 100 or 1000 X, then in fact they're not going to, let me just tell you that.
00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:52.159
Um, but they're not going to zero either.
00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:57.519
And so those are so so within self-directing, there's different asset classes that you can choose from.
00:10:57.600 --> 00:10:59.840
And by the way, we have our alt-asset summit.
00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:06.240
Go to altassetsummit.com where we go through all these different asset classes and the assets that your self-directed IRA could own.
00:11:06.399 --> 00:11:11.440
That's a two-day conference in October 22nd, 23rd, Costa Mesa, California.
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:13.600
Again, you can go to altassetsummit.com.
00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:31.120
We have hundreds of our investors that go to this every year and expert speakers across the different things from real estate to startups and venture to private equity to oil and gas to crypto to precious metals, all those different things, speaking there and talking about their expertise and where they see investment opportunities.
00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:34.559
So get over there to uh get a ticket and we'd love to see you there as well.
00:11:34.879 --> 00:11:44.559
And while you're at and while you're at the event, you can go down to 7 Eleven and buy a ticket to the California State Lottery and uh or buy Tesla stock, either one.
00:11:44.639 --> 00:11:47.440
You know, either way.
00:11:47.679 --> 00:11:48.080
Either way.
00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:48.639
Anyway.
00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:52.080
Well, I am so grateful um for you, Matt.
00:11:52.240 --> 00:12:05.919
Matt, you are on the front uh lines of the self-directing space and helping Americans protect their Roth IRAs, their 401ks, and allowing them to invest in what they know best.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:09.679
And I'm so grateful to be a co-host here with you on the show.
00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:17.279
Everybody, if you've found this helpful, please give it a like, give it a five stars, two thumbs up, whatever the case is, subscribe.
00:12:17.440 --> 00:12:23.679
We're here every week trying to help teach you the ways to self-direct your retirement accounts and get the best return you can.
00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:25.200
Matt, any final words?
00:12:25.519 --> 00:12:29.039
No, yeah, please go over to directedIRA.com if we can be a resource to you there.
00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:32.559
You can book a call with any of our team members for free on about how to get started.
00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:36.799
We've got, like Mark said, the weekly episodes here, webinars, events.
00:12:36.879 --> 00:12:40.399
We want to just be a resource for you and give all this education out for free.
00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:43.120
So thank you everyone for tuning on, tuning in.
00:12:43.440 --> 00:12:44.960
Um, we will see you next time.
00:12:45.039 --> 00:12:46.000
Until then, stay calm.
00:12:46.159 --> 00:12:57.519
Self direct ones.
