00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:10.560
Welcome everyone to the Directed IRA podcast.
00:00:10.640 --> 00:00:13.359
This is Matt Sornson, joined by the incredible Mark J.
00:00:13.519 --> 00:00:15.519
Kohler, attorney, CPA.
00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:17.199
Extraordinaire.
00:00:17.359 --> 00:00:17.839
I don't know.
00:00:18.079 --> 00:00:20.079
You don't need to throw in another accolade there.
00:00:20.239 --> 00:00:20.879
Author.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:22.719
There you go.
00:00:23.039 --> 00:00:23.359
Developer.
00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:24.399
Thank you so much.
00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:25.440
Rancher.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:27.920
Well, I I appreciate that.
00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:30.320
You can call me tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:32.399
and repeat that and you know give me a chance to do that.
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:34.079
Yeah, the extraordinary part.
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:42.000
Um well, we are excited to be talking about something new in the retirement account and tax advantage landscape.
00:00:42.159 --> 00:00:44.079
There is a new kit on the block.
00:00:44.240 --> 00:00:46.399
It is called the Trump Account.
00:00:46.640 --> 00:00:51.600
You're familiar with 401ks and IRAs and Roth IRAs and HSAs.
00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:57.039
I'm telling you, there's a new account that's in the lexicon of all these other tax advantage accounts.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:00:58.560
It's called the Trump Account.
00:00:58.719 --> 00:01:04.959
You need to know what it is because it's going to be there, and you should be thinking about doing it for your kids.
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:06.640
You love the Trump account, Mark?
00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:07.599
What do you think about it?
00:01:07.840 --> 00:01:08.159
I love them.
00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:22.159
And I'm doing math here on the uh the possibilities because the the trick is always starting early with saving.
00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:22.560
Yeah.
00:01:22.879 --> 00:01:35.920
And this Trump account is such a great opportunity to talk about young people starting to save earlier in life and what that snowball effect can be with the money.
00:01:36.239 --> 00:01:41.120
And then you put on top of it some of the tax strategies we're going to talk about today.
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:42.719
It is really phenomenal.
00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:48.000
So I've got some math here I want to share too that's just really, I think, going to be fun.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:50.719
Yeah, so let's talk about what this is.
00:01:50.879 --> 00:01:52.400
This is not for you.
00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:56.480
This is for your kids, or maybe your grandkids, or the neighbor kid.
00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:01.200
This is a Trump account is established for anyone from age zero to 17.
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:06.079
Once you hit age 18, this Trump account turns into a traditional IRA.
00:02:06.239 --> 00:02:07.120
We'll come back to that here.
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:08.479
There's some strategies there.
00:02:08.719 --> 00:02:15.680
But from 0 to 17, you can put$5,000 a year per child that's a U.S.
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:20.800
citizen with a Social Security number, you can put$5,000 a year total they can have in their account.
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:24.479
Now these Trump accounts get invested in the stock market.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:30.159
Sadly, you cannot self-direct them, but they're invested in index funds like the S P 500.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:32.800
So they're invested and this money is going to grow.
00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:36.479
But this is$5,000 every year you can put in.
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:39.360
There's some free money, we'll talk about the government's giving as well.
00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:43.680
But what I want to just make sure everybody understands is this isn't for you.
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:45.759
This is for your kids or your grandkids.
00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:53.120
And like Mark said, it's about starting early, giving them a head start, and letting the compounding start doing all the work.
00:02:53.280 --> 00:03:02.240
And I've I ran the numbers about putting 10 years of contributions in, um, or sorry, 12 years of contributions, putting 60 grand in.
00:03:02.319 --> 00:03:13.919
Let's say you had a five-year-old, you do it for 12 years until they hit 17, and how that account turns into$8 million in their 60s, when they turn 65, they don't put any more money in when they're 18.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:16.400
It's like 8 million bucks.
00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:18.719
It's in the millions.
00:03:18.879 --> 00:03:24.319
And I I just think it it's incredible what the opportunities are.
00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:32.800
So let's get to the some basics first, and then we'll start doing some math and and show you guys what the possibilities are.
00:03:33.120 --> 00:03:35.199
Um does that sound all right?
00:03:35.280 --> 00:03:35.759
You want me?
00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:38.000
I'll just kind of give you some of the facts I like.
00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:47.680
Um, first, any child under age 18 can open a Trump account.
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:49.439
That's point number one.
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:55.520
Don't get hung up on are they born between 2025 and 2028?
00:03:55.840 --> 00:03:58.800
Anyone can have an account if they're under age 18.
00:03:59.280 --> 00:04:12.560
If they're born during this unique period of 25 to 28, then 2025 to 2028, the government's gonna put$1,000 in to that account.
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:18.879
If you open it, you've got to take active action to go open it and fill out some forms.
00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:21.360
The government will drop$1,000 in.
00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:25.199
But anybody under age 18 can have a Trump account.
00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:36.000
And while they're under the age of 18, they can put in$5,000, the parents could put in$5,000, the uh grandparents could put in$5,000.
00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:39.279
Anybody can put the$5,000 in for that child.
00:04:39.519 --> 00:04:55.759
And if they're 17 years old right now, they can open that account tomorrow and put in$5,000, and it will grow tax-free with investments that are predetermined under the Trump account structure, and it will grow.
00:04:55.839 --> 00:04:59.519
And then at age 18, they can make some decisions.
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:01.839
That's my initial summary.
00:05:01.920 --> 00:05:03.199
What do you think, Matt?
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:08.000
Yeah, I uh now let's let me kind of go next level on that.
00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:09.360
Yeah, there's a lot of it.
00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:10.079
Okay, all right.
00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:13.519
You're gonna open this account at trumpaccounts.gov.
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:18.079
This is the website you do it at, and Robin Hood is the initial provider of these accounts.
00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:21.360
They're the kind of the pilot program, the Treasury Department selected.
00:05:21.519 --> 00:05:27.120
There's gonna be every other financial institution, many of them are ready at you know to launch these next.
00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:28.560
These are low-fee accounts.
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:31.279
These are no fee accounts, the investments are low.
00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:36.800
Most of the institutions that are doing these are doing them because they want to get that kid as a customer of theirs in the future.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:39.120
This is kind of like customer acquisition.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:45.120
So now when I you put that five grand in, though, I want to make sure everybody understands this.
00:05:45.600 --> 00:05:47.199
You don't get a tax deduction.
00:05:48.319 --> 00:05:52.800
Now you've heard, as I said earlier, you put that five grand in, you go to invest it.
00:05:52.959 --> 00:05:55.519
There's no taxes on the growth, this is building up.
00:05:55.759 --> 00:05:59.920
And when your kid reaches age 18, this turns into a traditional IRA.
00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:05.279
Now, when I first heard about Trump accounts, I got to that point and I was like, that sucks.
00:06:05.519 --> 00:06:06.800
I don't like Trump accounts.
00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:15.040
Why am I going to put five grand in, get no tax deduction, and that money is going to turn into a traditional IRA when my kid reaches age 18?
00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:18.639
They're going to then grow the account, pull it out, and the dollars are taxable.
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:22.639
Like, why doesn't it like a Roth IRA?
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:26.560
I don't get a tax deduction for the five grand if I put it in a Roth IRA.
00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:28.879
But how come it's a traditional IRA?
00:06:29.120 --> 00:06:40.000
However, my mind entirely changed on this when the Treasury put out regulations and confirmed that a Trump account turns into traditional IRA when the kid reaches age 18.
00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:44.560
And that traditional IRA can be converted to a Roth IRA.
00:06:44.720 --> 00:07:00.000
And when your kids 18, 19 or in their 20s, they're going to be in a low income bracket, if no income bracket, and they're going to be able to convert at little to no cost because the cost of the conversion is taking the traditional account value into your taxable income.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:06.720
So, bottom line there, I just want to get that early, is you do not get a deduction to put the money in.
00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:10.800
And this does turn into a traditional IRA for your kid when they hit age 18.
00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:12.560
But we can do a Roth conversion.
00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:15.360
And for that one reason, I'm a huge fan of Trump accounts.
00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:17.279
If I couldn't do that, I probably wouldn't like them.
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:18.639
I wouldn't even be talking about them.
00:07:18.720 --> 00:07:20.399
I wouldn't have done a bunch of YouTube videos on them.
00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:24.240
But because you can convert to Roth, I'm like a huge fan.
00:07:24.639 --> 00:07:27.279
Now I let's talk about this deductibility.
00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:29.279
And these can seem complicated.
00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:39.759
So if I repeat myself here a little bit, I want everybody listening to realize this repetition will help you absorb how these work.
00:07:40.240 --> 00:07:49.759
And so if you're gonna, let's say your child's born in the next year or two, they're gonna have 18 years of runway.
00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:55.519
So they get$1,000 from the government and 18 years to put in five grand.
00:07:55.920 --> 00:08:03.120
Now I'm gonna uh project, I'm gonna predict that that$5,000 will be adjusted for inflation.
00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:05.680
Let's just say it stays at$5,000.
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:10.079
That's$18 times five is$90,000.
00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:17.279
So theoretically, that kid would have a$91,000 account if there was no growth at all.
00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:28.000
Now, if you put in there a reasonable growth of 8%, I would hope these accounts would get that with the structure that the government's created with Wall Street.
00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:36.799
But if he gets 8%, around age 18, the kid's going to have approximately$190,000 to$200,000 in that account.
00:08:36.960 --> 00:08:45.120
So over the 18 years, that$91,000 of basis would have grown to$200,000.
00:08:45.919 --> 00:08:53.120
So that gain, if you will, is what would be taxable as the kid pulls it out.
00:08:53.360 --> 00:09:00.000
So it would ordinarily convert to a traditional IRA in that format.
00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:04.879
And any of the original contribution would just come out as basis.
00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:06.159
That's not taxable.
00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:11.440
But that$110,000 of gain would be taxable.
00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:14.879
Well, Matt says, not good enough for me.
00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:16.639
Let's put that on steroids.
00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:23.360
I want to convert that entire$200,000 account to a Roth IRA.
00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:29.519
And the beauty is you only pay tax on the$110,000 of interest.
00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:41.679
So you end up, that kid ends up with a$200,000 Roth IRA approximately for only tax applied to$110,000.
00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:44.879
And guess what tax bracket they're going to be in?
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:48.320
It's going to be a pretty low tax bracket.
00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:59.120
So it in meanwhile, the kid could have been building up a Roth IRA at the same time, which Matt and I have talked about for years.
00:09:59.279 --> 00:10:04.240
The Kid Roth strategy, where parents are paying their kids for working in the business.
00:10:04.320 --> 00:10:05.679
We'll come back to that.
00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:07.360
So that's on the side.
00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:14.879
But I just wanted to kind of give you some numbers behind that snowball that's going down the hill.
00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:17.039
What would you add to there, Matt?
00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:18.720
I know there's so much to unpack.
00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:21.360
Yeah, I think that's a great example there.
00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:34.240
And if you think about that, when your kids 18 or in their 20s and doing that Roth conversion, that example Mark talked about, their accounts now worth 200, you put in 90K, 110 goes into taxable income for them.
00:10:34.720 --> 00:10:47.519
But if I don't do that, and you let that$200,000 account now turn into an$8 million account when they're 65, what's going to happen?
00:10:47.759 --> 00:10:50.240
Only$90,000 is basis now.
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:54.240
And you've got millions of taxable gain coming out later to them.
00:10:54.639 --> 00:10:54.960
All right.
00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:57.279
Now they're definitely going to be in the highest brackets.
00:10:57.440 --> 00:11:02.320
So it is a very opportune time, and I love the strategy of converting at that young age.
00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:06.559
Now there's one wrinkle you want to make sure you're aware of, and that's the kitty tax.
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:18.559
So if when your kid is from age 18 to 23, if they are still a dependent of yours, like they're in high school, they're going to be, or if they're in college and they're dependent of yours, the kitty tax can apply.
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:27.120
And what that means is when they do the Roth conversion, let's take that example, let's say they convert and they take that whole$110,000 into income.
00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:32.799
They pay tax on that$110,000 based on your tax rate, not theirs.
00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:40.720
And you might be in a high tax bracket, let's say maybe you're in the 37% or the 20s, and so they're gonna assume your tax rate.
00:11:41.039 --> 00:11:47.759
So what what we like is if we can get around the kitty tax, that$110,000 goes on their tax rack bracket.
00:11:47.919 --> 00:11:50.000
They likely have no income, right?
00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:51.360
Or little income.
00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:53.200
They get a standard deduction.
00:11:53.360 --> 00:12:02.879
Maybe we can even chunk it over multiple years and keep it in a low bracket so we can get around the kitty tax where they're not your dependent, or maybe you even wait until they're 24 to do this.
00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:08.559
There could be some ways to avoid really all any taxes on the Roth conversion.
00:12:08.799 --> 00:12:10.080
Yeah, great points.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:14.000
Now, now here's another tax strategy.
00:12:14.159 --> 00:12:21.759
If we let's pivot now to this concept of when you put money in the Trump account, it's not a write-off.
00:12:21.919 --> 00:12:24.320
Okay, sure, that's on the face.
00:12:24.879 --> 00:12:35.600
But for many of our listeners out there that have a small business, when you employ your children, there's some other strategies to consider.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:48.879
First of all, in the regulations for the Trump account, a business owner can put 20 up to$2,500 into a Trump account for work performed by a kid under age 18.
00:12:49.120 --> 00:12:51.840
So it could be your child or someone else's child.
00:12:52.000 --> 00:13:04.000
So let's say I'm hiring some day laborers out on my ranch, and I've got some high school kids coming over, raking the field or pulling, picking up rocks, whatever it is, and they're working.
00:13:04.240 --> 00:13:11.679
I can pay them$2,500 up to$2,500 and put it in their Trump account and take a tax write-off.
00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:14.159
So they're trying to encourage businesses.
00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:20.799
If you hire kids under age 18, you can take a write-off and still put it directly into their Trump account.
00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:27.519
But you as parents, this is even easier because you don't have to withhold SudafudaFica or Workers Comp.
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:39.200
And you can hire your children in your business, something we've talked about over and over again on our sister podcast, as well as this podcast, Main Street Business Podcast, if you're not a listener over there.
00:13:39.440 --> 00:13:51.840
So business owners with children, there's a way you can make this Trump account tax deductible because you may even pay the child and they put their own money into the Trump account after you've paid them.
00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:55.200
So I could make that entire$5,000 deductible.
00:13:55.360 --> 00:13:56.879
That's pretty powerful.
00:13:57.519 --> 00:14:11.120
Yeah, and I I like if for those of you that have kids that work in the family business, or maybe it's even the rental property, I love the kid's Roth strategy because the kid can just put that into a Roth IRA directly.
00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:14.159
You still get a tax deduction for paying them out of the business.
00:14:14.240 --> 00:14:18.639
It's and they've got earned income, so they qualify to have their own Roth IRA.
00:14:18.879 --> 00:14:21.919
Now, the Trump account, you don't have to have earned income, right?
00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:25.360
There's no earned income requirement for a Trump account.
00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:30.879
And what you're seeing with most employers, and and Mark gave a nuanced example there.
00:14:30.960 --> 00:14:46.480
I don't want to make sure, I want to make sure people don't confuse that example because let's say what what most of this is this like$2,500 employer contribution is for employees of the business, it's for their kids.
00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:58.080
So the qualification is hey, I'm an employee in the business, I have kids, the company can put the$2,500 into my kids' Trump account, and the company takes the deduction.
00:14:58.320 --> 00:14:58.639
Okay.
00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:12.879
So there's a there's a number of ways around this employer contribution, which is$2,500 that the employer can put in, take a deduction for, and that money is going into the children of employees' Trump accounts.
00:15:13.039 --> 00:15:18.960
Now that doesn't mean you can do$5,000 and$2,500 for$7,500 total, by the way.
00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:32.960
If the employer, you're doing that strategy either in your own business or you work for a company that's doing the strategy, and they put in$2,500 to one of your kids' Trump accounts, then you can put in the left, the other$2,500 left to get you up to the$5,000 max.
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:33.759
Yeah.
00:15:34.080 --> 00:15:36.399
And I think that's a great point to emphasize.
00:15:36.559 --> 00:15:43.360
You can only put$5,000 in these accounts for this child under age 18 every year, right now.
00:15:43.440 --> 00:15:45.039
It's$5,000 is the max.
00:15:45.200 --> 00:15:48.960
But where that$5,000 comes from is the trick.
00:15:49.120 --> 00:15:53.919
It could come from a business that hires that kid, come from your business that hires that kid.
00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:55.120
It could come from you.
00:15:55.279 --> 00:15:57.120
It could come from the child themselves.
00:15:57.279 --> 00:15:58.879
It could come from grandparents.
00:15:59.120 --> 00:16:10.720
So if you get creative, you can make that$5,000 contribution tax deductible if you're creative and think uh intentionally about how you're going to do it.
00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:11.200
All right.
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:16.399
So let's clarify this, though, for everybody that from this employer$2,500.
00:16:17.039 --> 00:16:20.720
This can work if you're a kid working at a business.
00:16:20.879 --> 00:16:23.919
Let's say you're a teenager that offers Trump accounts.
00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:26.320
This$2,500 goes into your Trump account.
00:16:26.480 --> 00:16:26.960
All right.
00:16:27.120 --> 00:16:28.000
You don't have kids yet.
00:16:28.080 --> 00:16:29.360
This is going into your Trump account.
00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:32.960
For most people, though, it's going to be the parent that works for a company.
00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:41.840
This could be your own company, by the way, where you say, hey, if you're an employee in our business, we're going to put these$2,500 into your children's Trump accounts.
00:16:41.919 --> 00:16:42.720
It's not going into yours.
00:16:42.799 --> 00:16:44.159
You don't qualify for one employee.
00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:45.360
You're 45 years old.
00:16:45.519 --> 00:16:50.159
We're putting it into your kid's Trump account if they're under, obviously they're zero to 17.
00:16:50.320 --> 00:17:00.720
So it can work either way, either if it's the kid that's working, think of the teenagers, um, or it's you, the employee, working for a company, and the company puts it into your kid's Trump account.
00:17:00.799 --> 00:17:03.120
That's a little confusing, but it can work either way.
00:17:03.360 --> 00:17:04.799
Yeah, great point, Matt.
00:17:04.880 --> 00:17:06.160
I love that you bring that home.
00:17:06.319 --> 00:17:09.519
Okay, now I want to throw out another cool aspect here.
00:17:09.680 --> 00:17:15.519
Now, everybody, this requires you to know what is called the rule of 72.
00:17:16.079 --> 00:17:27.759
Now, what this rule is, many of you have heard us talk about it here on the show before, is that if you invest$100, how quickly is that$100 going to double?
00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:37.039
Well, the rule of 72 tells you that based on your rate of return, how quickly that$100 will double when you invest it.
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:57.839
So if you take the rule of seven, the rule of 72 says you take 72 and divide it by 8%, let's assume you're going to get an 8% rate of return, then your that money, whatever amount you invest, if it gets 8% every year, it would double in approximately nine, nine and a half years.
00:17:58.079 --> 00:18:00.480
So I put in$100, I get 8%.
00:18:01.119 --> 00:18:07.119
The rule of 72 says that$100 will turn into$200 in 9.5 years.
00:18:07.759 --> 00:18:27.680
Well, that's when you hear people say, well, that Trump account's gonna be worth$4 million or$8 million or blah, all this, what people are doing is presuming the rate of return this Trump account's gonna get from that child the day they start to when they retire.
00:18:27.920 --> 00:18:28.240
Okay.
00:18:28.799 --> 00:18:32.000
So what do we think these Trump accounts are actually gonna do?
00:18:32.160 --> 00:18:40.079
I'll tell you, Matt, if they make 8% after all the expenses involved, I'll give you$100.
00:18:42.480 --> 00:18:57.119
I don't have much faith that these Trump accounts, while a child is under age 18 and controlled by the government in Wall Street, are gonna make, after all the costs, are gonna much make much more than eight to six to eight percent.
00:18:57.680 --> 00:18:59.599
But here's the strategy.
00:18:59.759 --> 00:19:12.640
Once that kid turns 18, that money is unlocked and you can roll it into a self-directed retirement account, the Roth account we've been talking about.
00:19:13.039 --> 00:19:27.519
Now, if I get a 10% return or a even a 12% or a 15% return investing in things that I understand and know, and that money is unlocked for me.
00:19:27.759 --> 00:19:35.440
So let's say that kid that had that$200,000 account now converts it to a Roth and you invest it in directed IRA.
00:19:35.680 --> 00:19:39.920
Well, you move it to directed IRA and invested in things you know better.
00:19:40.160 --> 00:19:48.480
That's when that$200,000 will double every four and a half years with a 15% return.
00:19:48.720 --> 00:19:58.799
Now it goes from 200 to 400 to 800,000 before they're even 80, before they're even 30 years old.
00:19:59.119 --> 00:20:09.200
So that money can start exponentially growing into these numbers you see online of six, eight, 10, or 12 million dollars.
00:20:09.440 --> 00:20:15.039
But it takes active, wise investing once that kid turns 18.
00:20:15.119 --> 00:20:19.279
But that's really another concept that I think is just so powerful here.
00:20:19.680 --> 00:20:29.440
Yeah, and they call that the zero to 17, they actually call it the growth period under all the rules, which it's gonna grow, but I don't know, I don't think that's your period of growth.
00:20:29.599 --> 00:20:38.079
I think your period of growth to be looking forward to and why we love the Trump account is once the kid reaches age 18, it's now an IRA.
00:20:38.160 --> 00:20:39.039
It's not a Trump account.
00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:44.960
Trump accounts, as they're as they sit, have a restricted investment menu, which is U.S.
00:20:45.119 --> 00:20:47.200
index funds or mutual funds on the U.S.
00:20:47.279 --> 00:20:47.839
stock market.
00:20:47.920 --> 00:20:48.240
Okay.
00:20:48.400 --> 00:20:53.519
Now they're gonna be low fee and everything, but but you're gonna have some limited investment options there.
00:20:53.759 --> 00:20:58.000
Once they're 18, this is a traditional IRA, whether you just leave it as tradition or you convert it to Roth.
00:20:58.160 --> 00:20:59.279
We love converting it to Roth.
00:20:59.599 --> 00:21:01.440
Like Mark said, you can self-direct it.
00:21:01.599 --> 00:21:07.519
That Roth IRA could buy real estate, a private fund, a small business, crypto, an individual stock, even.
00:21:07.599 --> 00:21:13.359
Like you're just you have more investment flexibility and freedom to grow and build that Roth IRA.
00:21:13.440 --> 00:21:15.440
Now, here's one thing that's really important.
00:21:15.680 --> 00:21:17.920
I did a video on this too on YouTube.
00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:22.799
It's like the kid has the ability, it's their account at age 18.
00:21:23.359 --> 00:21:31.680
So it's not just your responsibility and job as the parent of the child to help figure out how to get money into this account and give them a head start financially.
00:21:31.839 --> 00:21:38.640
It's also your job to teach them what you're doing and what investing is and how this can compound and benefit them in the future.
00:21:38.880 --> 00:21:47.519
Because at 19, 2021, if you are not there helping them and still being their parent and still being involved in this, they could just liquidate this thing.
00:21:47.680 --> 00:21:53.200
They'll have massive taxes and penalties to do it, but they could liquidate it early because it will be their account.
00:21:53.599 --> 00:22:09.279
So there's another little step to this, which is they're gonna graduate here at 18 into More investment options, more flexibility, but they could also go the other end on this and just distribute the whole thing and blow all of your work that you did to give them a head start.
00:22:09.440 --> 00:22:11.680
So think about those things together.
00:22:11.839 --> 00:22:20.079
And my best recommendation, which is what we give to our clients and have done for years with the kids Roth IRA strategy, is teach your kids about investing.
00:22:20.240 --> 00:22:25.680
Show them the value and the importance of this, not just surprise when they're 18, you have this account.
00:22:25.920 --> 00:22:30.319
Teach them how they're investing it, let them see how this is growing and how the money is working for them.
00:22:30.559 --> 00:22:34.400
If they just let it keep rolling, it can be a huge, huge benefit to them in the future.
00:22:34.640 --> 00:22:34.960
Yeah.
00:22:35.119 --> 00:22:50.319
I I think that's one of the ancillary benefits of these Trump accounts, people are not talking about enough, is that it's really driving parents to have conversations about money with their kids and teach them about saving.
00:22:50.480 --> 00:22:52.000
Why are we doing this?
00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:58.319
It's shocking to me how many families don't talk about money or sex at the table.
00:22:58.480 --> 00:22:59.279
You know, like that.
00:22:59.359 --> 00:23:01.599
They just avoid those topics altogether.
00:23:01.759 --> 00:23:04.559
And that's when problems happen, obviously.
00:23:04.720 --> 00:23:08.400
And so we need to be talking to our kids about money.
00:23:08.640 --> 00:23:13.920
And this Trump account is a wonderful way to start that conversation about saving.
00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:17.359
So when they turn 18, they're a little more responsible with it.
00:23:17.519 --> 00:23:19.200
Now I have one thing to say too.
00:23:19.359 --> 00:23:20.799
Last point for me.
00:23:21.119 --> 00:23:30.079
I know there's parents out there that are like, well, this would have been great if I 15 years ago, you know, this would have been great 10 years ago or whatever.
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:34.720
It's never too late to start with something.
00:23:35.039 --> 00:23:36.799
Something is better than nothing.
00:23:37.039 --> 00:23:44.480
And so if you have kids that are 14, 16, 17, still get involved in this process.
00:23:44.720 --> 00:23:48.960
Do the best you can to get something started in a Trump account.
00:23:49.279 --> 00:23:59.759
I think having that conversation again with your kids about saving and starting that snowball, even as small as it would be, is better than nothing.
00:23:59.920 --> 00:24:02.799
So don't be dejected or frustrated.
00:24:03.200 --> 00:24:08.319
Take advantage of what you can and and uh jump on the bandwagon.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:10.720
I think it'll bless your family tremendously.
00:24:11.039 --> 00:24:11.359
Yeah.
00:24:11.519 --> 00:24:12.720
Yeah, great point.
00:24:12.960 --> 00:24:16.240
Um well, thank you everybody for tuning in here.
00:24:16.319 --> 00:24:18.640
Mark and I have both shot some videos on YouTube on this.
00:24:18.720 --> 00:24:21.200
We've got some other content and resources on this.
