00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:26.239
Mike also uses this platform to share his targeted assessment application, healthy mindset course, meditation and goal setting technique for the athlete and workplace athlete.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:27.600
We're glad you're here.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:32.719
Now let's dive headfirst into this episode of the Healthy Mindset AI Podcast.
00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:35.200
Here's your host, Mike Hartman.
00:00:54.880 --> 00:01:05.760
And what made me think about doing this podcast is uh a friend recently sent me a video with him, and I think his grandson is a year and a half old.
00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:08.640
And what they were doing, they were singing the ABCs.
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:22.239
But the year and a half old was smiling, he was laughing because it's the way they were doing it, they were going A, B, C, and it was a really good way to teach and learn.
00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:26.319
So, what's gonna happen as my friend, his name is Marty.
00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:35.280
I don't want to mention his grandson's name here, but at such a young age, he's learning good habits already and having fun with it.
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:40.400
And that's one thing I definitely learned in being a professional athlete.
00:01:40.480 --> 00:01:51.280
I remember when I was young, I always focused on different things, like okay, I have to be so productive today, I have to do this, I had a set schedule, I knew everything I was gonna do.
00:01:51.359 --> 00:02:00.879
I knew I was gonna walk out of my house and turn right, turn left to the car, get there, do a stretch, did my training, then we would do on-ice training.
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:07.439
And when I was young, I'd go to Windsor, Ontario and skate with Adam Graves and Warren Reichel and a lot of friends.
00:02:07.519 --> 00:02:11.439
Uh Ty Domey was out there, and just we had a really great skate.
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:15.520
Then we would go for a little dinner after, and it was a it was a lot of fun.
00:02:15.680 --> 00:02:18.000
But that was a that was habitual.
00:02:18.159 --> 00:02:21.439
Uh it's like a ritual has to be habitual.
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:22.960
So that was my ritual.
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:35.120
Then at sometimes at night, I'd go for a five or six mile run and uh then have my watermelon because I didn't like to have uh too much ice cream, or I treat myself to a yogurt.
00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:36.560
And it was a crazy schedule.
00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:43.439
Yes, it was a good habit, but it sometimes I look back, I really wasn't having the fun I should have.
00:02:43.520 --> 00:02:46.960
So if I had to redo things over, I would make it so it's fun.
00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:50.479
So, Marty, what a great uh video you sent me.
00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:56.400
And it had me thinking because I knew we were gonna talk about habits, but I think that was amazing.
00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:03.280
Uh, Marty was also a coach, he uh he coached uh junior hockey, he was a Division I assistant coach.
00:03:03.599 --> 00:03:13.520
So I not because you know, I don't think they did the ABCs because Marty was coaching that level, but I think he understands how to relate to to people and get the best out of them.
00:03:13.599 --> 00:03:20.800
That's one thing he did do, and that was a great example in that uh adorable uh video you sent me.
00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:21.520
We loved it.
00:03:21.599 --> 00:03:29.360
So when we saw it, so some of the the one of the things that that I want to talk about is make it fun, make your habit fun.
00:03:29.520 --> 00:03:38.639
If you get up and you say, I have to work out today, I have to do this, I have to do that, eventually it becomes you might get bored with it.
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:44.960
So people stick with what they enjoy, and I'm just getting back into my own workouts.
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:57.759
So now I'm at a point where I'm on the five over five months of after having my sepsis issue and what I went through, and I'm finally back doing stuff.
00:03:57.840 --> 00:04:02.319
But what I like to do is they say, Well, you have to do three sets or three to five sets.
00:04:02.560 --> 00:04:10.639
I was doing almost a Tabata workout where I was doing just one set of 40 different exercises, and I loved it.
00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:12.240
It kept me moving.
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:16.160
Somebody might say, Well, that's not the uh the correct way to do it.
00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:20.800
I wasn't over-training, I wasn't overusing, I know I'm not gonna do the same thing the next day.
00:04:20.879 --> 00:04:24.720
I know my body was gonna recover and I'll have more of a conditioning day.
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:27.680
So do something you love to do.
00:04:27.839 --> 00:04:30.879
And the other thing is focus on showing up.
00:04:31.120 --> 00:04:31.839
What happened?
00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:34.879
Marty's uh grandson, a year and a half old.
00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:40.319
I think his time is going so quick, I'm not sure if he's a year and a half, it might even be uh almost two.
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:43.199
I can't I can't keep up anymore.
00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:49.519
But focus on on showing up, don't worry about being perfect, just keep showing up.
00:04:49.759 --> 00:04:56.560
Consistency always is uh beats intensity in my eyes, especially coming up with good habits.
00:04:56.879 --> 00:05:01.199
So even if you're just starting to get back into training, fitness training, good example.
00:05:01.600 --> 00:05:02.399
Just show up.
00:05:02.639 --> 00:05:06.720
If you work for corporate America, start doing little walks.
00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:08.399
Don't force yourself to do it.
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:17.680
Or even put it in your calendar and say, okay, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna put on my headset, uh, I'm gonna listen to uh some music, listen to a podcast.
00:05:18.079 --> 00:05:20.160
And and to me, that will help you.
00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:22.720
I love listening to music when I do things.
00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:24.720
I just that's what I love to do.
00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:30.399
I shut the TV off and I listen to music, or even when I'm doing my yoga, I'm gonna listen to yoga music.
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:32.560
To me, it gets me going.
00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:34.800
And uh start small.
00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:38.160
You don't have to come out of the gate and do what somebody else does.
00:05:38.319 --> 00:05:40.959
A lot of people like to what compare themselves to other people.
00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:48.959
Smart start very small, small daily actions really uh turn into big results over time.
00:05:49.279 --> 00:05:58.160
And I always look back, even to you know, the thing that I went through is I said, okay, I can't wait to get back, I can't wait to do a little bit more.
00:05:58.240 --> 00:05:58.879
And guess what?
00:05:58.959 --> 00:05:59.439
I did.
00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:02.319
I was I came back a little bit too strong.
00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:07.279
My chest was sore, I couldn't sleep at night because what happens when you have open heart surgery?
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:09.519
You start worrying about your chest, and I did.
00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:12.480
The doctor said you went a little bit too hard, you have to slow down.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:13.839
So start small.
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:18.800
Uh, stop saying I have to replace it with, I have to get to it.
00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:27.040
Uh, that type of thing, you know, that to me um is adding more pressure to yourself.
00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:31.600
So just keep it simple, have that attitude and bring your energy and when you're ready to do it, great.
00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:34.959
I never liked working out at nighttime.
00:06:35.040 --> 00:06:37.040
I know I'm talking a lot about fitness, it's a lot.
00:06:37.279 --> 00:06:43.920
There's so many different ways to have good habits, but I started getting back and I started riding the bike after dinner.
00:06:44.160 --> 00:06:47.360
Sometimes people will say, Oh no, you can't work out at night.
00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:48.480
You're gonna get tired.
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:49.120
But I loved it.
00:06:49.199 --> 00:06:49.600
I felt good.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:51.040
Actually, I was sleeping better.
00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:54.319
So, what works for one person may not work for the other.
00:06:54.560 --> 00:06:55.360
And be proud.
00:06:55.439 --> 00:06:57.279
And I think number this is number five.
00:06:57.439 --> 00:06:58.959
Be proud of what you're doing.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:03.360
We say that in professional sports or even a big win in corporate America.
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:07.759
Celebrate your progress, don't wait until you reach the finish line.
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:13.360
Okay, I I want to lose 20 pounds and I'm not gonna do anything until I do that.
00:07:13.439 --> 00:07:14.480
I want to be a beast.
00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:19.680
Well, recognize every step forward and be grateful for that.
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:25.279
The other thing is I always believe in, especially a world-class athlete will tell you this.
00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:28.240
They always connect their habits to their purpose.
00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:31.759
A lot of athletes believe in recovery, uh, no matter what.
00:07:31.920 --> 00:07:34.560
The definition of life to me is the ability to recover.
00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:37.360
The definition of fitness is the ability to recover.
00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:40.720
Uh, after you're in the hospital, I've done a lot of talks on that.
00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:42.959
Recovery is so important.
00:07:43.279 --> 00:07:48.639
So when you know why something matters, you're gonna spend more time doing it.
00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:52.319
It's much more easier and it helps you stay committed.
00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:56.879
Number seven is build routines instead of relying on motivation.
00:07:57.120 --> 00:08:01.920
Motivation might be good for uh 10 minutes.
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:07.680
I I did a lot of speaking engagements uh in the hundreds of speaking engagements over the years.
00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:16.959
And one company, uh automotive company, and not Kia, not the one I've done a lot of work with, but another group brought me in and said, You're gonna motivate my team today.
00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:20.639
And I said, Ah, I said, I I don't, I'm not really a motivator.
00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:21.839
Oh, come on, it's the end of the month.
00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:23.199
You have to motivate my people here.
00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:30.399
And I said, I go, I'm gonna do it in a different way because everything just isn't about motivation, because motivation comes and goes.
00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:35.120
Great habits are here to stay because they're scheduled.
00:08:35.200 --> 00:08:36.639
You schedule your habits.
00:08:36.960 --> 00:08:39.519
Surround yourself with positive people.
00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:42.159
Somebody will say, Oh, you'll never do that.
00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:44.080
You can't do that, it's impossible.
00:08:44.159 --> 00:08:46.320
I just saw something on Martin St.
00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:50.399
Louis, and they said he was too small, he was never gonna make it.
00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:54.000
And I didn't know he had so many things going against him.
00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:58.240
Uh, he couldn't skate for being small, there were just so many things.
00:08:58.320 --> 00:08:58.879
And what happened?
00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:02.559
He became a great NHL uh player.
00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:12.720
Uh he he went on be beyond that, but but focusing on being around good people, and I always try to do that now in my life.
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:18.960
I try to eliminate the negativity in my life, and you got to remember that habits are contagious.
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:22.559
Spend time with people who inspire you to become better.
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:25.519
Don't be around people who are setting you back.
00:09:26.320 --> 00:09:30.399
Those people are really what they're doing, they're just telling you how negative they are.
00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:32.559
And one thing I could do, I learn every day.
00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:36.320
I listen to many podcasts, I used to read a book a month.
00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:51.600
I I know it's uh now I now I listen to more audiobooks than anything else because I spend time in a car and I don't have a lot of time to read a book a month, but I used to read a book a month and I wanted to learn every day, learn from my competitors, learn from people.
00:09:52.000 --> 00:10:01.759
I I used to watch uh NHL players even when I when I played, and my favorite story is when I was 19 years old, it was super exciting.
00:10:01.919 --> 00:10:05.600
Uh I didn't even have time to get nervous, especially the first 10 games.
00:10:05.679 --> 00:10:12.879
I was playing on adrenaline, and I remember going to the Montreal Forum the first time and just watching some of the practices.
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:14.159
And I go, Oh, this is cool.
00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:17.120
And I had to remind myself I'm gonna I'm gonna be playing that night.
00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:35.519
And the other time was I'll never forget this, uh, going to Edmonton when the Edmonton Oilers were amazing, with Marc Messier, who's my hero in life and good friend, um, watching him play out there and watching um uh Wayne Gretzky and Kevin Low.
00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:40.399
I ended up playing with all those great leaders, but I was like, holy cow, I wanted to watch practice.
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:41.840
I almost forgot I had to get in there.
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:43.120
We had a team stretch.
00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:52.000
I was enjoying being in what we call our hockey underwear, watching these players, and they all, what they were doing is creating good habits for themselves.
00:10:52.240 --> 00:10:53.519
So I was learning from them.
00:10:53.600 --> 00:11:02.080
They were all passing the puck hard, they were skating hard, they were, they were laughing, they were having fun, and they they what were they doing?
00:11:02.159 --> 00:11:04.799
It was almost contagious, like holy cow, look at this.
00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:11.519
These guys are having so much fun, and they there's a reason they were the best team in the NHL at that time as well.
00:11:11.679 --> 00:11:20.240
And become the person you want to be, don't just chase goals and build the habits of a person that that you want to become.
00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:21.919
Do something you love.
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:30.559
It exercising or doing, even if you're a you know, you're uh you're an athlete, do it because you love it.
00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:35.039
And I I keep listening to these different interviews, and I heard Wayne Gretzky say it.
00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:39.279
He said, Boy, you Wayne Gretzky put a lot of hard work in.
00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:41.039
He says, I never looked at it like that.
00:11:41.279 --> 00:11:42.720
Never looked at it as hard work.
00:11:42.799 --> 00:11:43.919
I just loved it.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:47.759
I loved my sport, I love playing hockey.
00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:53.200
And I heard Brett Hall recently say, and I'm starting to enjoy listening to him.
00:11:53.360 --> 00:11:56.159
Bret Hall said he didn't like hockey.
00:11:56.240 --> 00:11:59.279
Uh, he hated everything about it except the games.
00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:00.320
And that was okay.
00:12:00.480 --> 00:12:03.759
And he was one of the best scorers in hockey.
00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:12.080
He didn't like to train, he did it because he had to do certain things, but he got into good habits because he had to do it.
00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:13.600
Now that's a different story.
00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:16.399
He's a world-class athlete, but he loved the games.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:22.240
He didn't like the long flights, the bus rides to the airport early in the morning.
00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:30.799
Um, he didn't like, but he loved going out there and hearing the the crowd like cheer when he's out or the visiting team.
00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:36.879
He loves disappointing the the visiting crowd, scoring big goals and doing things he did.
00:12:37.120 --> 00:12:42.639
So to me, it was always still, you have to create those good habits.
00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:47.360
I know Brett Hall had a train, he did his training, he didn't love it.
00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:54.000
And maybe it's uh it's I'm telling you something where oh Mike's speaking out of both sides of your mouth.
00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:59.440
Sometimes we don't have a choice uh of what we have to do, but if you love a part of it, that's what it is.
00:12:59.519 --> 00:13:03.759
If you love exercise, do that part of the exercising that you love to do.
00:13:03.919 --> 00:13:06.879
If you have a hey, I love this part of my fitness program.
00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:11.759
And the difference is sometimes is you may not be trying to be a world-class athlete.
00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:17.440
You're just trying to develop good habits in your life to stay healthy and fit, taking walks, doing things.
00:13:17.519 --> 00:13:31.120
Where sometimes a world-class athlete is uh is a pretty tough, really a tough job because you have to do certain things at certain times, at the same time, create good habits for ourselves.
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:33.200
But I'm gonna end, I'm gonna say another thing.
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:42.960
I think it's harder to be an everyday person that goes to work than to be a professional athlete, and I'll tell you why.
00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:44.399
Maybe not harder to make.
00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:55.600
I'm not talking about the numbers, but the one thing I learned is we had time off for recovery to learn good habits, to develop good habits, to recover during the summer.
00:13:55.840 --> 00:14:04.240
So you might have an eight-month hockey season, and then you're gonna have the rest of the time off to you go back to training camp, but you're training, you're developing good habits.
00:14:04.480 --> 00:14:18.399
Where you might in corporate America, you might have to put a little bit more work into it because you're on a real tight schedule and it's year-round, and you may have a total of three weeks off during the year to actually go on vacations and do things and recover.
00:14:18.799 --> 00:14:20.639
So it's even every bit is hard.
00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:23.919
So I'm not saying becoming a professional athlete is easier.
00:14:24.080 --> 00:14:30.320
I think I'm not saying it's harder, I'm saying it's even easier to develop those habits.
00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:37.440
But so if you really work at it and you have fun doing it, I promise you you'll have great results.
