WEBVTT
00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:05.637
Hello and welcome, my valued listeners, to another episode of Living in Your Power.
00:00:06.077 --> 00:00:11.517
I'm your host, Dr. Marlene Greenleaf, and today is a special one.
00:00:11.837 --> 00:00:18.237
We are wrapping up our March series on Women Who Rise, Strength,
00:00:18.417 --> 00:00:19.737
Leadership, and Empowerment.
00:00:19.837 --> 00:00:25.957
And I couldn't think of a better way to close this with a meaningful conversation
00:00:25.957 --> 00:00:29.417
with a woman who truly embodies this theme.
00:00:30.297 --> 00:00:37.317
Today, I'm joined by Charity McDonald, founder of the CRWN Institute,
00:00:37.317 --> 00:00:41.377
a keynote speaker, and a top leadership voice on LinkedIn.
00:00:41.877 --> 00:00:47.397
She's an award-winning consultant who helps high achievers step into their full
00:00:47.397 --> 00:00:51.897
value using her crown model of self-leadership framework.
00:00:52.577 --> 00:00:57.757
I have had the pleasure of witnessing her rise, and today, she's here to share
00:00:57.757 --> 00:00:59.877
her journey and insights with you.
00:01:00.017 --> 00:01:08.097
So Charity, welcome to the podcast and you are my first in-person interview I'm having.
00:01:08.377 --> 00:01:12.077
So this is exciting for me. I hope it's exciting for you too.
00:01:12.897 --> 00:01:16.197
It is. Thank you so much for having me, Dr. Marlene.
00:01:16.437 --> 00:01:21.757
Wow, I'm excited to be here and I'm really appreciative of you inviting me to
00:01:21.757 --> 00:01:24.757
speak with you today. So I look forward to the conversation.
00:01:25.277 --> 00:01:29.697
Yes, it is my pleasure. Okay, so let's go ahead and get started.
00:01:30.017 --> 00:01:36.577
Because we said we were going to keep it to a limited time. So we are going to dive right in.
00:01:37.217 --> 00:01:42.557
So would you start by sharing a little bit about your journey and what you do?
00:01:44.456 --> 00:01:50.196
Absolutely. So the work I do is primarily career and life transition.
00:01:50.196 --> 00:01:53.536
So I support leaders at all levels, really.
00:01:53.836 --> 00:01:57.996
But I would say the journey for myself, it actually started,
00:01:58.016 --> 00:02:03.236
I worked in higher education, and I did a lot of program development work.
00:02:03.236 --> 00:02:07.176
So supporting different organizations, including the School of Management and
00:02:07.176 --> 00:02:11.936
Labor Relations and their programs that they had around executive and professional
00:02:11.936 --> 00:02:16.156
education. It kind of gave me insight into the consulting space.
00:02:16.316 --> 00:02:21.496
And I actually had a stint as a recruiter and I found it wasn't necessarily,
00:02:21.516 --> 00:02:26.316
you know, a fit for me fully. So I did like helping people still.
00:02:26.516 --> 00:02:28.056
So I decided to volunteer.
00:02:28.616 --> 00:02:34.016
I volunteered as a career coach. So I supported people that were long-term unemployed
00:02:34.016 --> 00:02:38.756
who had struggles and potential issues with age discrimination.
00:02:39.516 --> 00:02:46.496
So I was supporting long-term unemployed professionals who were mostly people
00:02:46.496 --> 00:02:47.916
who were mid to senior professionals.
00:02:48.656 --> 00:02:56.216
So that was for six years. So from 2016 to about 2022, I volunteered while simultaneously
00:02:56.216 --> 00:02:59.956
working in healthcare and in other areas.
00:02:59.956 --> 00:03:06.016
And then, you know, I decided that I wanted to actually help people through
00:03:06.016 --> 00:03:13.276
a business. So that's kind of what started Crown Institute, which is the name.
00:03:13.476 --> 00:03:18.796
So Crown Institute is about basically helping people to receive a raise,
00:03:18.916 --> 00:03:21.916
not just in their pay, but their peace and personal power.
00:03:22.096 --> 00:03:24.376
So I enjoy helping people.
00:03:24.696 --> 00:03:29.176
I've had the privilege of helping over 330 professionals post pandemic.
00:03:29.956 --> 00:03:33.036
To move into their next level with their careers.
00:03:33.296 --> 00:03:38.236
And where I am now is I'm happy to be speaking with you and also dedicate more
00:03:38.236 --> 00:03:41.956
time to speaking opportunities and dealing with corporate clients.
00:03:42.756 --> 00:03:48.056
Oh, I love that. But is CROWN an acronym or is it just CROWN?
00:03:50.163 --> 00:03:54.883
It actually is an acronym. And you are only the second person asking me that.
00:03:55.103 --> 00:04:01.163
With all the podcasts and interviews I've done, I believe you are the second person asking me this.
00:04:01.323 --> 00:04:06.463
And yes, it is an acronym that stands for Creating and Receiving Wealth Now.
00:04:06.863 --> 00:04:09.743
That's what it actually means for. I love that
00:04:09.743 --> 00:04:14.323
I love that I absolutely love that yes brown
00:04:14.323 --> 00:04:17.383
okay I'm sorry I'm getting excited okay let's
00:04:17.383 --> 00:04:21.943
let's move on but that's good that's a very varied career that you've had and
00:04:21.943 --> 00:04:27.343
I love how you married your experience to move to where you are right now because
00:04:27.343 --> 00:04:30.623
it's like you know you said you moved on to recruiting you didn't like it but
00:04:30.623 --> 00:04:34.663
yet still you saw the need to help people so you're like, okay,
00:04:34.863 --> 00:04:38.863
I'm not going to do the recruiting, but instead I'm going to add this extension
00:04:38.863 --> 00:04:40.603
where I can still continue to help people.
00:04:40.763 --> 00:04:45.723
So that for me is valuable that you're still grounded and you still want to
00:04:45.723 --> 00:04:51.543
help people using the tools and the knowledge that you have gained over your career.
00:04:51.823 --> 00:04:53.723
So kudos to you.
00:04:54.123 --> 00:04:56.023
Thank you so much. Okay.
00:04:57.103 --> 00:05:01.463
Okay. So you and I, we've talked before about the power of self-leadership.
00:05:01.603 --> 00:05:07.743
And I'd love for you to share, what did that concept mean to you when you first heard it?
00:05:07.903 --> 00:05:11.283
And how has it evolved for you since?
00:05:12.303 --> 00:05:16.123
So this is definitely a full circle moment, Dr.
00:05:16.263 --> 00:05:23.223
Mylene, because I think the first time I ever heard of self-leadership in the way, you know, that.
00:05:24.066 --> 00:05:28.506
It's known great, you know, for professionals was actually from you.
00:05:28.806 --> 00:05:32.586
So that was the first time I heard that particular word. I've heard similar
00:05:32.586 --> 00:05:36.466
words that are kind of related, but it's not quite the same.
00:05:36.626 --> 00:05:39.546
For me, I was like, wow, what is that?
00:05:39.666 --> 00:05:43.026
You know, and I just saw it as the ability to lead yourself,
00:05:43.026 --> 00:05:48.026
you know, your personal and professional endeavors. I also saw it as like growing
00:05:48.026 --> 00:05:53.786
in yourself skills and your abilities to take radical responsibility for where you want to be in life.
00:05:53.986 --> 00:05:58.426
So that's how I took it. And I truly believe in the power of self-leadership.
00:05:58.806 --> 00:06:02.686
Since that time that you mentioned it, I was just like on a quest of,
00:06:02.866 --> 00:06:07.706
okay, I want to learn more about this self-leadership and how do I develop that within myself?
00:06:07.706 --> 00:06:13.046
And also how can I use that to help my clients as well? So I'm very grateful
00:06:13.046 --> 00:06:14.546
for you sharing that with me.
00:06:14.686 --> 00:06:21.986
And also it has evolved. I've actually created a framework that I use for my
00:06:21.986 --> 00:06:29.426
clients that it encompasses the aspects of self-leadership using an acronym with, you know, CROWN.
00:06:29.746 --> 00:06:34.606
That is the acronym for the framework. So it has really evolved.
00:06:34.606 --> 00:06:40.406
I've really had a lot of great opportunities to actually speak to self-leadership
00:06:40.406 --> 00:06:44.326
for other people to understand it who are not familiar with the term because
00:06:44.326 --> 00:06:45.626
it's not that popular of a term.
00:06:45.626 --> 00:06:49.526
And we hear all kinds of other words that are very similar, like self-management
00:06:49.526 --> 00:06:53.126
or self-discipline, self-determination, self-mastery.
00:06:53.286 --> 00:06:57.806
Those might be more common, but self-leadership, I truly believe in the power
00:06:57.806 --> 00:07:02.166
of that, that if you're not able to lead yourself, how are you able to lead other people?
00:07:02.426 --> 00:07:05.526
So I appreciate you sharing that with me.
00:07:06.449 --> 00:07:12.509
No, absolutely. Because it's exactly as you said, it's not a concept that people
00:07:12.509 --> 00:07:15.789
really understand and they incorporate it into others.
00:07:15.949 --> 00:07:21.349
Like you're saying, hey, you know, if you want to be an emphatic leader,
00:07:21.709 --> 00:07:25.029
that they think is self-leadership. But it's not because, you know,
00:07:25.149 --> 00:07:29.249
we understand that great leadership is built upon the foundation of self-leadership.
00:07:29.389 --> 00:07:34.469
Because as you said, if you don't know who you are as a person, how can you lead others?
00:07:34.629 --> 00:07:38.009
Because that's what leadership is. It's about leading others.
00:07:38.209 --> 00:07:42.329
You know, for me, self-leadership, like you said, is taking ownership for your
00:07:42.329 --> 00:07:46.849
life and consciously shaping your journey, which is what you're doing.
00:07:46.849 --> 00:07:51.689
And you're helping your clients also to understand this and to help them shape themselves.
00:07:51.689 --> 00:07:56.609
So, you know, I love self-leadership and I think it's such an important concept
00:07:56.609 --> 00:08:01.789
that we share and teach others, especially on their leadership journey,
00:08:01.949 --> 00:08:03.769
because like we discussed,
00:08:03.949 --> 00:08:08.009
it helps you direct your thoughts, your behaviors, and your actions.
00:08:08.009 --> 00:08:10.909
And also it by doing so will help
00:08:10.909 --> 00:08:13.649
you achieve your desired goals so it is something that we
00:08:13.649 --> 00:08:18.629
really need to I don't want to say hammer in but we do we do need to hammer
00:08:18.629 --> 00:08:23.429
into others especially those who are thrown into leadership roles it's like
00:08:23.429 --> 00:08:29.929
okay what about you what do you know about yourself how can who are you and
00:08:29.929 --> 00:08:32.649
a lot of times I get this little blank stare like.
00:08:33.789 --> 00:08:38.409
What do you mean you know i'm a leader okay well how are you how are you a leader
00:08:38.409 --> 00:08:42.469
what do you know about yourself so that you can lead others so it's truly a
00:08:42.469 --> 00:08:47.809
concept that we really need to enlighten people more about so i am so excited
00:08:47.809 --> 00:08:51.089
to know that you've taken this concept and you have created,
00:08:51.749 --> 00:08:54.949
a framework to help not just yourself because
00:08:54.949 --> 00:08:58.349
you know you learned it and you and you used it for yourself but you're using
00:08:58.349 --> 00:09:03.209
also to help others you know especially your clients so keep doing that and
00:09:03.209 --> 00:09:06.809
let's keep getting this message out about self-leadership because it's an important
00:09:06.809 --> 00:09:14.109
tool to help you to become a great leader so thank you for doing that so our next question,
00:09:15.069 --> 00:09:19.309
now it says now you speak so powerfully about taking ownership of your growth
00:09:19.309 --> 00:09:20.469
you know through leadership.
00:09:21.069 --> 00:09:27.829
Can you share with us a time you had to lead yourself through a difficult situation
00:09:27.829 --> 00:09:32.429
or decision and what did that look like for you in action?
00:09:34.176 --> 00:09:39.916
Yes, I love this question because I do have some recent examples where that happened.
00:09:40.376 --> 00:09:44.996
With the power of LinkedIn, you know, I have different people reach out to me
00:09:44.996 --> 00:09:49.096
from so many different, you know, job fields and industries.
00:09:49.496 --> 00:09:53.276
And I was actually invited to host an event.
00:09:53.276 --> 00:09:58.016
So it was a sales and management hiring event that I was asked to not only host,
00:09:58.116 --> 00:10:03.576
but also present. and I decided that what I would do to show more value throughout
00:10:03.576 --> 00:10:07.956
the event is I would also offer laser coaching for those who were interested.
00:10:08.316 --> 00:10:13.176
I had my own table at the event and it was an event that had other employers
00:10:13.176 --> 00:10:16.496
there. So I have to make sure things are organized and prepared.
00:10:17.056 --> 00:10:22.856
The thing about it is the time. So for me, sometimes in my natural state of
00:10:22.856 --> 00:10:30.036
being, I can be less, I can be more focused on energy management instead of time management.
00:10:30.276 --> 00:10:36.056
And with this, I was very conscious of time. So there were certain things that
00:10:36.056 --> 00:10:37.516
needed to be done by certain times.
00:10:37.956 --> 00:10:44.376
And I was really needing to be maybe in two places at one time in this event.
00:10:44.636 --> 00:10:51.516
So trying to make that all come together and it being a new opportunity for
00:10:51.516 --> 00:10:56.176
me, it really stretched me and forced me to be out of my comfort zone because
00:10:56.176 --> 00:10:57.736
I am a more introspective person.
00:10:57.736 --> 00:11:03.236
So really taking the lead on things and shifting the room was something that
00:11:03.236 --> 00:11:07.136
I was going to have to, you know, really step up, step, you know,
00:11:07.316 --> 00:11:08.536
step up my leadership, literally,
00:11:08.796 --> 00:11:14.716
because now it was on a team effort and it was on a wider scale, impacting, you know.
00:11:15.836 --> 00:11:18.996
You know, a significant amount of people all at one time in an event.
00:11:18.996 --> 00:11:20.716
So I had to make some decisions.
00:11:21.771 --> 00:11:26.931
That were more so my own decision. And I knew it would impact everyone who was participating.
00:11:27.211 --> 00:11:31.011
So whether that was the hiring manager or the candidates, really having to make
00:11:31.011 --> 00:11:35.071
some decisions to make sure, hey, I want to maximize the time that those who
00:11:35.071 --> 00:11:41.551
are attending can network a little more and apply some of the strategies that I very briefly shared.
00:11:41.551 --> 00:11:46.451
But I made a last minute decision to cut my message short so that there would
00:11:46.451 --> 00:11:48.151
be more time for the networking exercise.
00:11:48.151 --> 00:11:53.851
So the purpose there really was I wanted the people to leave that experience
00:11:53.851 --> 00:11:58.971
with a new skill and with more confidence around communicating their value to
00:11:58.971 --> 00:12:02.471
people they may not know and understanding the power of networking,
00:12:02.611 --> 00:12:06.911
as opposed to me just speaking because I was the person, you know,
00:12:06.991 --> 00:12:08.211
brought in to run things.
00:12:08.211 --> 00:12:12.471
But I really wanted the focus to go back to the people.
00:12:12.771 --> 00:12:16.371
And some of the hiring managers had some great feedback as well.
00:12:16.571 --> 00:12:22.091
Usually they would have those hiring managers to exit, but in this case,
00:12:22.251 --> 00:12:25.011
because of time constraints during the time that I'm speaking.
00:12:25.271 --> 00:12:30.271
So due to the time constraints, I just made the decision to let them remain
00:12:30.271 --> 00:12:34.571
in the room so that they're also able to hear the candidate presentation so
00:12:34.571 --> 00:12:39.171
that I could support the candidates. But also the hiring managers got some value as well.
00:12:39.311 --> 00:12:42.751
So that was a good experience. But it was kind of a little unnerving a little
00:12:42.751 --> 00:12:46.751
bit because I was moving around a lot, like way more than I anticipated.
00:12:48.011 --> 00:12:52.951
Well, I love that because I see how you took the lead for yourself,
00:12:53.111 --> 00:12:56.931
because I'm assuming that's like part of your holistic teaching also,
00:12:57.191 --> 00:13:01.271
where you added it to yourself, where you assess the situation and you're like, OK,
00:13:01.791 --> 00:13:05.551
how can I make this management for everyone and myself also?
00:13:05.791 --> 00:13:10.571
And you made that decision to, hey, I'm going to take away some of the stuff
00:13:10.571 --> 00:13:15.791
that I want to do so I can bring more value to others and give those in your
00:13:15.791 --> 00:13:21.391
team the time that they need also to pour into others. So great insight.
00:13:21.631 --> 00:13:27.531
I love that. I absolutely love that. And I love the holistic aspect also of what you do.
00:13:27.731 --> 00:13:31.391
So thank you for sharing that with us. That was very helpful.
00:13:33.591 --> 00:13:37.871
So, with this being Women's History Month, I know this is going to be,
00:13:37.931 --> 00:13:42.031
it's the last day for Women's History Month, but I'd love to hear,
00:13:42.491 --> 00:13:44.951
what does it mean to you personally?
00:13:45.311 --> 00:13:50.511
And how do you see yourself contributing to that legacy of women's history?
00:13:52.011 --> 00:13:57.091
That is a huge question it's a huge question and even when I saw the question
00:13:57.091 --> 00:14:04.171
you know I'm just like wow the legacy so to put it uh shortly I do believe.
00:14:05.099 --> 00:14:09.419
The work that we do, you know, as service providers and those of us in the helping
00:14:09.419 --> 00:14:14.439
professions, it is helping others to plant seeds to their legacies.
00:14:14.759 --> 00:14:19.159
And also with Women's History Month, that being such a crucial time.
00:14:19.359 --> 00:14:23.219
I know we're kind of winding down towards the end, but it's so imperative that
00:14:23.219 --> 00:14:27.359
we understand the importance that women make in the world, you know,
00:14:27.559 --> 00:14:28.759
especially during these times.
00:14:28.939 --> 00:14:32.699
It's so important to remember our contributions as a whole.
00:14:32.959 --> 00:14:38.479
So I think even just being a griot to remind other people of the accomplishments
00:14:38.479 --> 00:14:41.599
that other women have done and sharing that information.
00:14:41.859 --> 00:14:45.579
You know, I had the pleasure of being a guest lecturer last year to discuss
00:14:45.579 --> 00:14:50.579
women's history. And I made the choice to focus on particularly women of color
00:14:50.579 --> 00:14:52.759
who have made an impact in different areas.
00:14:52.999 --> 00:14:56.939
And I think to think of myself as being amongst that is kind of like,
00:14:57.099 --> 00:15:01.979
whoa, I don't know if I was putting myself in that, but I think legacy can come
00:15:01.979 --> 00:15:04.939
from just the work that is being done through leadership,
00:15:05.199 --> 00:15:10.739
through just helping people to know they can be empowered through the means of self-leadership.
00:15:10.899 --> 00:15:15.039
Also, knowing that there are more sustainable ways to success.
00:15:15.319 --> 00:15:20.879
So one of the things that I'm hoping to do is to create a series of books that
00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:24.459
will help influence that guidance, right?
00:15:26.339 --> 00:15:30.379
So not just self-leadership, but also feminine leadership and those principles
00:15:30.379 --> 00:15:35.619
and team leadership and how all those things can tie in together in just our
00:15:35.619 --> 00:15:38.419
general conversations around leadership development.
00:15:38.759 --> 00:15:41.999
So that's how I helped to, in some way, contribute.
00:15:42.219 --> 00:15:47.339
And I love the idea of legacy because it's so huge. I feel like that's still
00:15:47.339 --> 00:15:48.399
something I'm still learning.
00:15:48.759 --> 00:15:55.059
And I've been living for a while, but, you know, I'm still trying to learn what
00:15:55.059 --> 00:15:58.399
it is, you know, that I could do in terms of legacy is concerned.
00:15:59.950 --> 00:16:04.450
During young, I've been living for 62 years and I'm still, I still believe in
00:16:04.450 --> 00:16:09.690
building a legacy, not just for my family, but for others also,
00:16:09.850 --> 00:16:10.690
because it's like you said,
00:16:11.030 --> 00:16:16.490
we know for a fact that women, the things that we do as women,
00:16:16.610 --> 00:16:19.170
not just as leaders, but women in general,
00:16:19.550 --> 00:16:26.090
it's not, we don't really hear about these things because, you know, we're overshadowed.
00:16:26.090 --> 00:16:29.950
And then, you know, I don't want to get into politics, but with this current
00:16:29.950 --> 00:16:34.450
situation that we're in, everything that we are building up,
00:16:34.650 --> 00:16:37.850
it's being taken away from us, especially, like I said, the women.
00:16:38.070 --> 00:16:43.910
So we have to, even in some small way, to continue to uplift women and bring
00:16:43.910 --> 00:16:45.430
their stories to the forefront.
00:16:45.590 --> 00:16:49.730
It's like you said, it doesn't have to be, oh, this woman did such a great job
00:16:49.730 --> 00:16:53.930
and built this great foundation and company and stuff. No, it's the little things
00:16:53.930 --> 00:16:58.370
we do where we start off by we're sharing information and learning to uplift
00:16:58.370 --> 00:17:00.230
each other, collaboration.
00:17:00.610 --> 00:17:05.390
We need to bring this out to the forefront to show what we are doing and to
00:17:05.390 --> 00:17:09.890
get our message out there. You know, that women are powerful leaders.
00:17:10.470 --> 00:17:14.190
We are. And even though it's not out there the way it should be,
00:17:14.390 --> 00:17:20.110
we do know for a fact that we are an integral part of leadership.
00:17:20.570 --> 00:17:24.930
We're not getting the same pay, you know, like the men get still.
00:17:25.210 --> 00:17:30.770
We don't understand why. But nevertheless, we're still out there and we're making a huge impact.
00:17:31.030 --> 00:17:35.870
So continue to build that legacy. And age has nothing to do with building a
00:17:35.870 --> 00:17:39.430
legacy. We can do this until God calls us home.
00:17:39.810 --> 00:17:42.050
So continue doing what you're doing.
00:17:42.470 --> 00:17:46.530
Thank you for that. Okay, so now let's end with this.
00:17:47.010 --> 00:17:53.050
What are you working on right now that feels deeply aligned with your purpose and growth?
00:17:54.710 --> 00:17:59.850
That's a beautiful question. And to your point, I definitely agree with you.
00:18:00.030 --> 00:18:05.790
There's definitely not an age to legacy, But that is something I do think about
00:18:05.790 --> 00:18:10.470
more of what legacy I would like to leave behind in terms of leadership.
00:18:10.870 --> 00:18:16.630
So as I mentioned earlier, books. So that's something I'm looking into and really
00:18:16.630 --> 00:18:22.250
making more impact as it relates to corporate clients, as well as,
00:18:22.250 --> 00:18:25.230
you know, opportunities to speak and share my voice.
00:18:25.230 --> 00:18:30.430
So that way it could be, whether that is collaboration, like what I'm doing right now.
00:18:30.490 --> 00:18:35.450
So I'd like to connect more towards collaboration on a grander scale.
00:18:35.450 --> 00:18:40.330
So something in the future, for sure, that would bring the voices of different
00:18:40.330 --> 00:18:45.410
women leaders together. I do actually have something in the works for October.
00:18:45.730 --> 00:18:51.590
So there is going to be an event that is geared towards women leaders.
00:18:51.870 --> 00:18:56.250
Those who are executives are interested in that. And I'll be,
00:18:57.043 --> 00:19:01.903
Basically partnering with two other wonderful ladies, and we'll definitely promote
00:19:01.903 --> 00:19:03.543
more information about that in the future.
00:19:04.543 --> 00:19:10.423
Also, you know, I think just in general, just me honoring my own legacy for
00:19:10.423 --> 00:19:15.003
myself, which is just prioritizing peace and being that example.
00:19:15.183 --> 00:19:18.883
Right. Because a lot of times we think of leadership as it has to be this like
00:19:18.883 --> 00:19:22.363
massive thing of you're the executive of a top company.
00:19:22.363 --> 00:19:26.183
But it can also leadership can also just be you making
00:19:26.183 --> 00:19:29.103
the decision to prioritize your piece in
00:19:29.103 --> 00:19:34.443
your day you making the decision to manage your energy and that really helping
00:19:34.443 --> 00:19:38.003
you to align a little bit better because I find for myself when I try to do
00:19:38.003 --> 00:19:44.623
the traditional way of leadership with client interaction it can be a little
00:19:44.623 --> 00:19:49.083
bit cantankerous for me or a little tedious where it can help initially.
00:19:49.083 --> 00:19:54.143
So you're able to just get things done. But I think for me, learning to lean
00:19:54.143 --> 00:20:00.483
into my natural strengths, which are intuition and wanting to see just the best of other people,
00:20:01.023 --> 00:20:05.503
seeing that, being able to communicate that effectively to my clients and making
00:20:05.503 --> 00:20:09.283
sure they're able to reach their goals and not just, you know,
00:20:09.443 --> 00:20:12.903
gain skills, but skills that will help them throughout their lifetime.
00:20:13.723 --> 00:20:19.943
And yeah, to the earlier point, I will say I do actually mention people who
00:20:19.943 --> 00:20:23.643
are significantly younger than me when I talk about women's history,
00:20:23.683 --> 00:20:28.343
because we've had some young people do some amazing things to people who are
00:20:28.343 --> 00:20:30.743
no longer with us, who live long lives.
00:20:30.883 --> 00:20:37.803
So I love the diversity of the leaders that I admire, and I hope that somehow
00:20:37.803 --> 00:20:42.623
I can impart some wisdom so others can grow in their worthiness, right?
00:20:42.803 --> 00:20:45.183
And also just their wellness overall.
00:20:45.943 --> 00:20:52.503
To the earlier point, yes, I take a holistic approach and I want to continue with that. So thank you.
00:20:54.162 --> 00:21:00.482
Absolutely. Thank you for being who you are, for being out there, for empowering.
00:21:00.642 --> 00:21:04.062
I know we're not supposed to use that word, but that is what you're doing.
00:21:04.262 --> 00:21:09.002
You're empowering not just yourself, but you're empowering your leaders and
00:21:09.002 --> 00:21:14.342
the future generation to see themselves for who they really are and to put them
00:21:14.342 --> 00:21:18.902
in that space and give them that opportunity to really grow and reach their potential.
00:21:18.902 --> 00:21:23.622
So I truly appreciate what you're doing and continue doing so.
00:21:23.802 --> 00:21:27.882
And once you get your program out, I try my best, but you know,
00:21:27.962 --> 00:21:29.042
my schedule is just crazy.
00:21:29.162 --> 00:21:32.402
I try to be there, you know, for the things that you're doing.
00:21:32.622 --> 00:21:36.622
So feel free to share that information with me. I try to do my best to see how
00:21:36.622 --> 00:21:40.942
I can plug in and to just give you the support that you need.
00:21:41.042 --> 00:21:45.002
Because that, in essence, is what it's all about. It's about supporting each
00:21:45.002 --> 00:21:51.362
other as we build and grow. So, Charity, I want to thank you so much for being
00:21:51.362 --> 00:21:54.902
here today and sharing your heart, your wisdom, and your light.
00:21:55.262 --> 00:21:59.442
I mean, you certainly poured so much into this short conversation.
00:21:59.622 --> 00:22:06.062
And I know our listeners will be walking away in power today.
00:22:06.062 --> 00:22:09.062
So to everyone tuning in i
00:22:09.062 --> 00:22:11.942
want you to remember self-leadership starts with
00:22:11.942 --> 00:22:16.122
a decision to honor your voice and
00:22:16.122 --> 00:22:19.362
walk in alignment with who you truly are and don't
00:22:19.362 --> 00:22:24.962
forget to connect with charity on linkedin and to learn more about her at her
00:22:24.962 --> 00:22:30.882
crwn institute so until next time dear listeners i want you to continue to live
00:22:30.882 --> 00:22:36.482
boldly in your power and if it gets tough i want you to remember but to just breathe,
00:22:36.782 --> 00:22:39.562
you've still got the strength to rise.
00:22:39.862 --> 00:22:46.742
So continue to live in your power. Thank you, Charity. Thank you.
00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:05.637
Hello and welcome, my valued listeners, to another episode of Living in Your Power.
00:00:06.077 --> 00:00:11.517
I'm your host, Dr. Marlene Greenleaf, and today is a special one.
00:00:11.837 --> 00:00:18.237
We are wrapping up our March series on Women Who Rise, Strength,
00:00:18.417 --> 00:00:19.737
Leadership, and Empowerment.
00:00:19.837 --> 00:00:25.957
And I couldn't think of a better way to close this with a meaningful conversation
00:00:25.957 --> 00:00:29.417
with a woman who truly embodies this theme.
00:00:30.297 --> 00:00:37.317
Today, I'm joined by Charity McDonald, founder of the CRWN Institute,
00:00:37.317 --> 00:00:41.377
a keynote speaker, and a top leadership voice on LinkedIn.
00:00:41.877 --> 00:00:47.397
She's an award-winning consultant who helps high achievers step into their full
00:00:47.397 --> 00:00:51.897
value using her crown model of self-leadership framework.
00:00:52.577 --> 00:00:57.757
I have had the pleasure of witnessing her rise, and today, she's here to share
00:00:57.757 --> 00:00:59.877
her journey and insights with you.
00:01:00.017 --> 00:01:08.097
So Charity, welcome to the podcast and you are my first in-person interview I'm having.
00:01:08.377 --> 00:01:12.077
So this is exciting for me. I hope it's exciting for you too.
00:01:12.897 --> 00:01:16.197
It is. Thank you so much for having me, Dr. Marlene.
00:01:16.437 --> 00:01:21.757
Wow, I'm excited to be here and I'm really appreciative of you inviting me to
00:01:21.757 --> 00:01:24.757
speak with you today. So I look forward to the conversation.
00:01:25.277 --> 00:01:29.697
Yes, it is my pleasure. Okay, so let's go ahead and get started.
00:01:30.017 --> 00:01:36.577
Because we said we were going to keep it to a limited time. So we are going to dive right in.
00:01:37.217 --> 00:01:42.557
So would you start by sharing a little bit about your journey and what you do?
00:01:44.456 --> 00:01:50.196
Absolutely. So the work I do is primarily career and life transition.
00:01:50.196 --> 00:01:53.536
So I support leaders at all levels, really.
00:01:53.836 --> 00:01:57.996
But I would say the journey for myself, it actually started,
00:01:58.016 --> 00:02:03.236
I worked in higher education, and I did a lot of program development work.
00:02:03.236 --> 00:02:07.176
So supporting different organizations, including the School of Management and
00:02:07.176 --> 00:02:11.936
Labor Relations and their programs that they had around executive and professional
00:02:11.936 --> 00:02:16.156
education. It kind of gave me insight into the consulting space.
00:02:16.316 --> 00:02:21.496
And I actually had a stint as a recruiter and I found it wasn't necessarily,
00:02:21.516 --> 00:02:26.316
you know, a fit for me fully. So I did like helping people still.
00:02:26.516 --> 00:02:28.056
So I decided to volunteer.
00:02:28.616 --> 00:02:34.016
I volunteered as a career coach. So I supported people that were long-term unemployed
00:02:34.016 --> 00:02:38.756
who had struggles and potential issues with age discrimination.
00:02:39.516 --> 00:02:46.496
So I was supporting long-term unemployed professionals who were mostly people
00:02:46.496 --> 00:02:47.916
who were mid to senior professionals.
00:02:48.656 --> 00:02:56.216
So that was for six years. So from 2016 to about 2022, I volunteered while simultaneously
00:02:56.216 --> 00:02:59.956
working in healthcare and in other areas.
00:02:59.956 --> 00:03:06.016
And then, you know, I decided that I wanted to actually help people through
00:03:06.016 --> 00:03:13.276
a business. So that's kind of what started Crown Institute, which is the name.
00:03:13.476 --> 00:03:18.796
So Crown Institute is about basically helping people to receive a raise,
00:03:18.916 --> 00:03:21.916
not just in their pay, but their peace and personal power.
00:03:22.096 --> 00:03:24.376
So I enjoy helping people.
00:03:24.696 --> 00:03:29.176
I've had the privilege of helping over 330 professionals post pandemic.
00:03:29.956 --> 00:03:33.036
To move into their next level with their careers.
00:03:33.296 --> 00:03:38.236
And where I am now is I'm happy to be speaking with you and also dedicate more
00:03:38.236 --> 00:03:41.956
time to speaking opportunities and dealing with corporate clients.
00:03:42.756 --> 00:03:48.056
Oh, I love that. But is CROWN an acronym or is it just CROWN?
00:03:50.163 --> 00:03:54.883
It actually is an acronym. And you are only the second person asking me that.
00:03:55.103 --> 00:04:01.163
With all the podcasts and interviews I've done, I believe you are the second person asking me this.
00:04:01.323 --> 00:04:06.463
And yes, it is an acronym that stands for Creating and Receiving Wealth Now.
00:04:06.863 --> 00:04:09.743
That's what it actually means for. I love that
00:04:09.743 --> 00:04:14.323
I love that I absolutely love that yes brown
00:04:14.323 --> 00:04:17.383
okay I'm sorry I'm getting excited okay let's
00:04:17.383 --> 00:04:21.943
let's move on but that's good that's a very varied career that you've had and
00:04:21.943 --> 00:04:27.343
I love how you married your experience to move to where you are right now because
00:04:27.343 --> 00:04:30.623
it's like you know you said you moved on to recruiting you didn't like it but
00:04:30.623 --> 00:04:34.663
yet still you saw the need to help people so you're like, okay,
00:04:34.863 --> 00:04:38.863
I'm not going to do the recruiting, but instead I'm going to add this extension
00:04:38.863 --> 00:04:40.603
where I can still continue to help people.
00:04:40.763 --> 00:04:45.723
So that for me is valuable that you're still grounded and you still want to
00:04:45.723 --> 00:04:51.543
help people using the tools and the knowledge that you have gained over your career.
00:04:51.823 --> 00:04:53.723
So kudos to you.
00:04:54.123 --> 00:04:56.023
Thank you so much. Okay.
00:04:57.103 --> 00:05:01.463
Okay. So you and I, we've talked before about the power of self-leadership.
00:05:01.603 --> 00:05:07.743
And I'd love for you to share, what did that concept mean to you when you first heard it?
00:05:07.903 --> 00:05:11.283
And how has it evolved for you since?
00:05:12.303 --> 00:05:16.123
So this is definitely a full circle moment, Dr.
00:05:16.263 --> 00:05:23.223
Mylene, because I think the first time I ever heard of self-leadership in the way, you know, that.
00:05:24.066 --> 00:05:28.506
It's known great, you know, for professionals was actually from you.
00:05:28.806 --> 00:05:32.586
So that was the first time I heard that particular word. I've heard similar
00:05:32.586 --> 00:05:36.466
words that are kind of related, but it's not quite the same.
00:05:36.626 --> 00:05:39.546
For me, I was like, wow, what is that?
00:05:39.666 --> 00:05:43.026
You know, and I just saw it as the ability to lead yourself,
00:05:43.026 --> 00:05:48.026
you know, your personal and professional endeavors. I also saw it as like growing
00:05:48.026 --> 00:05:53.786
in yourself skills and your abilities to take radical responsibility for where you want to be in life.
00:05:53.986 --> 00:05:58.426
So that's how I took it. And I truly believe in the power of self-leadership.
00:05:58.806 --> 00:06:02.686
Since that time that you mentioned it, I was just like on a quest of,
00:06:02.866 --> 00:06:07.706
okay, I want to learn more about this self-leadership and how do I develop that within myself?
00:06:07.706 --> 00:06:13.046
And also how can I use that to help my clients as well? So I'm very grateful
00:06:13.046 --> 00:06:14.546
for you sharing that with me.
00:06:14.686 --> 00:06:21.986
And also it has evolved. I've actually created a framework that I use for my
00:06:21.986 --> 00:06:29.426
clients that it encompasses the aspects of self-leadership using an acronym with, you know, CROWN.
00:06:29.746 --> 00:06:34.606
That is the acronym for the framework. So it has really evolved.
00:06:34.606 --> 00:06:40.406
I've really had a lot of great opportunities to actually speak to self-leadership
00:06:40.406 --> 00:06:44.326
for other people to understand it who are not familiar with the term because
00:06:44.326 --> 00:06:45.626
it's not that popular of a term.
00:06:45.626 --> 00:06:49.526
And we hear all kinds of other words that are very similar, like self-management
00:06:49.526 --> 00:06:53.126
or self-discipline, self-determination, self-mastery.
00:06:53.286 --> 00:06:57.806
Those might be more common, but self-leadership, I truly believe in the power
00:06:57.806 --> 00:07:02.166
of that, that if you're not able to lead yourself, how are you able to lead other people?
00:07:02.426 --> 00:07:05.526
So I appreciate you sharing that with me.
00:07:06.449 --> 00:07:12.509
No, absolutely. Because it's exactly as you said, it's not a concept that people
00:07:12.509 --> 00:07:15.789
really understand and they incorporate it into others.
00:07:15.949 --> 00:07:21.349
Like you're saying, hey, you know, if you want to be an emphatic leader,
00:07:21.709 --> 00:07:25.029
that they think is self-leadership. But it's not because, you know,
00:07:25.149 --> 00:07:29.249
we understand that great leadership is built upon the foundation of self-leadership.
00:07:29.389 --> 00:07:34.469
Because as you said, if you don't know who you are as a person, how can you lead others?
00:07:34.629 --> 00:07:38.009
Because that's what leadership is. It's about leading others.
00:07:38.209 --> 00:07:42.329
You know, for me, self-leadership, like you said, is taking ownership for your
00:07:42.329 --> 00:07:46.849
life and consciously shaping your journey, which is what you're doing.
00:07:46.849 --> 00:07:51.689
And you're helping your clients also to understand this and to help them shape themselves.
00:07:51.689 --> 00:07:56.609
So, you know, I love self-leadership and I think it's such an important concept
00:07:56.609 --> 00:08:01.789
that we share and teach others, especially on their leadership journey,
00:08:01.949 --> 00:08:03.769
because like we discussed,
00:08:03.949 --> 00:08:08.009
it helps you direct your thoughts, your behaviors, and your actions.
00:08:08.009 --> 00:08:10.909
And also it by doing so will help
00:08:10.909 --> 00:08:13.649
you achieve your desired goals so it is something that we
00:08:13.649 --> 00:08:18.629
really need to I don't want to say hammer in but we do we do need to hammer
00:08:18.629 --> 00:08:23.429
into others especially those who are thrown into leadership roles it's like
00:08:23.429 --> 00:08:29.929
okay what about you what do you know about yourself how can who are you and
00:08:29.929 --> 00:08:32.649
a lot of times I get this little blank stare like.
00:08:33.789 --> 00:08:38.409
What do you mean you know i'm a leader okay well how are you how are you a leader
00:08:38.409 --> 00:08:42.469
what do you know about yourself so that you can lead others so it's truly a
00:08:42.469 --> 00:08:47.809
concept that we really need to enlighten people more about so i am so excited
00:08:47.809 --> 00:08:51.089
to know that you've taken this concept and you have created,
00:08:51.749 --> 00:08:54.949
a framework to help not just yourself because
00:08:54.949 --> 00:08:58.349
you know you learned it and you and you used it for yourself but you're using
00:08:58.349 --> 00:09:03.209
also to help others you know especially your clients so keep doing that and
00:09:03.209 --> 00:09:06.809
let's keep getting this message out about self-leadership because it's an important
00:09:06.809 --> 00:09:14.109
tool to help you to become a great leader so thank you for doing that so our next question,
00:09:15.069 --> 00:09:19.309
now it says now you speak so powerfully about taking ownership of your growth
00:09:19.309 --> 00:09:20.469
you know through leadership.
00:09:21.069 --> 00:09:27.829
Can you share with us a time you had to lead yourself through a difficult situation
00:09:27.829 --> 00:09:32.429
or decision and what did that look like for you in action?
00:09:34.176 --> 00:09:39.916
Yes, I love this question because I do have some recent examples where that happened.
00:09:40.376 --> 00:09:44.996
With the power of LinkedIn, you know, I have different people reach out to me
00:09:44.996 --> 00:09:49.096
from so many different, you know, job fields and industries.
00:09:49.496 --> 00:09:53.276
And I was actually invited to host an event.
00:09:53.276 --> 00:09:58.016
So it was a sales and management hiring event that I was asked to not only host,
00:09:58.116 --> 00:10:03.576
but also present. and I decided that what I would do to show more value throughout
00:10:03.576 --> 00:10:07.956
the event is I would also offer laser coaching for those who were interested.
00:10:08.316 --> 00:10:13.176
I had my own table at the event and it was an event that had other employers
00:10:13.176 --> 00:10:16.496
there. So I have to make sure things are organized and prepared.
00:10:17.056 --> 00:10:22.856
The thing about it is the time. So for me, sometimes in my natural state of
00:10:22.856 --> 00:10:30.036
being, I can be less, I can be more focused on energy management instead of time management.
00:10:30.276 --> 00:10:36.056
And with this, I was very conscious of time. So there were certain things that
00:10:36.056 --> 00:10:37.516
needed to be done by certain times.
00:10:37.956 --> 00:10:44.376
And I was really needing to be maybe in two places at one time in this event.
00:10:44.636 --> 00:10:51.516
So trying to make that all come together and it being a new opportunity for
00:10:51.516 --> 00:10:56.176
me, it really stretched me and forced me to be out of my comfort zone because
00:10:56.176 --> 00:10:57.736
I am a more introspective person.
00:10:57.736 --> 00:11:03.236
So really taking the lead on things and shifting the room was something that
00:11:03.236 --> 00:11:07.136
I was going to have to, you know, really step up, step, you know,
00:11:07.316 --> 00:11:08.536
step up my leadership, literally,
00:11:08.796 --> 00:11:14.716
because now it was on a team effort and it was on a wider scale, impacting, you know.
00:11:15.836 --> 00:11:18.996
You know, a significant amount of people all at one time in an event.
00:11:18.996 --> 00:11:20.716
So I had to make some decisions.
00:11:21.771 --> 00:11:26.931
That were more so my own decision. And I knew it would impact everyone who was participating.
00:11:27.211 --> 00:11:31.011
So whether that was the hiring manager or the candidates, really having to make
00:11:31.011 --> 00:11:35.071
some decisions to make sure, hey, I want to maximize the time that those who
00:11:35.071 --> 00:11:41.551
are attending can network a little more and apply some of the strategies that I very briefly shared.
00:11:41.551 --> 00:11:46.451
But I made a last minute decision to cut my message short so that there would
00:11:46.451 --> 00:11:48.151
be more time for the networking exercise.
00:11:48.151 --> 00:11:53.851
So the purpose there really was I wanted the people to leave that experience
00:11:53.851 --> 00:11:58.971
with a new skill and with more confidence around communicating their value to
00:11:58.971 --> 00:12:02.471
people they may not know and understanding the power of networking,
00:12:02.611 --> 00:12:06.911
as opposed to me just speaking because I was the person, you know,
00:12:06.991 --> 00:12:08.211
brought in to run things.
00:12:08.211 --> 00:12:12.471
But I really wanted the focus to go back to the people.
00:12:12.771 --> 00:12:16.371
And some of the hiring managers had some great feedback as well.
00:12:16.571 --> 00:12:22.091
Usually they would have those hiring managers to exit, but in this case,
00:12:22.251 --> 00:12:25.011
because of time constraints during the time that I'm speaking.
00:12:25.271 --> 00:12:30.271
So due to the time constraints, I just made the decision to let them remain
00:12:30.271 --> 00:12:34.571
in the room so that they're also able to hear the candidate presentation so
00:12:34.571 --> 00:12:39.171
that I could support the candidates. But also the hiring managers got some value as well.
00:12:39.311 --> 00:12:42.751
So that was a good experience. But it was kind of a little unnerving a little
00:12:42.751 --> 00:12:46.751
bit because I was moving around a lot, like way more than I anticipated.
00:12:48.011 --> 00:12:52.951
Well, I love that because I see how you took the lead for yourself,
00:12:53.111 --> 00:12:56.931
because I'm assuming that's like part of your holistic teaching also,
00:12:57.191 --> 00:13:01.271
where you added it to yourself, where you assess the situation and you're like, OK,
00:13:01.791 --> 00:13:05.551
how can I make this management for everyone and myself also?
00:13:05.791 --> 00:13:10.571
And you made that decision to, hey, I'm going to take away some of the stuff
00:13:10.571 --> 00:13:15.791
that I want to do so I can bring more value to others and give those in your
00:13:15.791 --> 00:13:21.391
team the time that they need also to pour into others. So great insight.
00:13:21.631 --> 00:13:27.531
I love that. I absolutely love that. And I love the holistic aspect also of what you do.
00:13:27.731 --> 00:13:31.391
So thank you for sharing that with us. That was very helpful.
00:13:33.591 --> 00:13:37.871
So, with this being Women's History Month, I know this is going to be,
00:13:37.931 --> 00:13:42.031
it's the last day for Women's History Month, but I'd love to hear,
00:13:42.491 --> 00:13:44.951
what does it mean to you personally?
00:13:45.311 --> 00:13:50.511
And how do you see yourself contributing to that legacy of women's history?
00:13:52.011 --> 00:13:57.091
That is a huge question it's a huge question and even when I saw the question
00:13:57.091 --> 00:14:04.171
you know I'm just like wow the legacy so to put it uh shortly I do believe.
00:14:05.099 --> 00:14:09.419
The work that we do, you know, as service providers and those of us in the helping
00:14:09.419 --> 00:14:14.439
professions, it is helping others to plant seeds to their legacies.
00:14:14.759 --> 00:14:19.159
And also with Women's History Month, that being such a crucial time.
00:14:19.359 --> 00:14:23.219
I know we're kind of winding down towards the end, but it's so imperative that
00:14:23.219 --> 00:14:27.359
we understand the importance that women make in the world, you know,
00:14:27.559 --> 00:14:28.759
especially during these times.
00:14:28.939 --> 00:14:32.699
It's so important to remember our contributions as a whole.
00:14:32.959 --> 00:14:38.479
So I think even just being a griot to remind other people of the accomplishments
00:14:38.479 --> 00:14:41.599
that other women have done and sharing that information.
00:14:41.859 --> 00:14:45.579
You know, I had the pleasure of being a guest lecturer last year to discuss
00:14:45.579 --> 00:14:50.579
women's history. And I made the choice to focus on particularly women of color
00:14:50.579 --> 00:14:52.759
who have made an impact in different areas.
00:14:52.999 --> 00:14:56.939
And I think to think of myself as being amongst that is kind of like,
00:14:57.099 --> 00:15:01.979
whoa, I don't know if I was putting myself in that, but I think legacy can come
00:15:01.979 --> 00:15:04.939
from just the work that is being done through leadership,
00:15:05.199 --> 00:15:10.739
through just helping people to know they can be empowered through the means of self-leadership.
00:15:10.899 --> 00:15:15.039
Also, knowing that there are more sustainable ways to success.
00:15:15.319 --> 00:15:20.879
So one of the things that I'm hoping to do is to create a series of books that
00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:24.459
will help influence that guidance, right?
00:15:26.339 --> 00:15:30.379
So not just self-leadership, but also feminine leadership and those principles
00:15:30.379 --> 00:15:35.619
and team leadership and how all those things can tie in together in just our
00:15:35.619 --> 00:15:38.419
general conversations around leadership development.
00:15:38.759 --> 00:15:41.999
So that's how I helped to, in some way, contribute.
00:15:42.219 --> 00:15:47.339
And I love the idea of legacy because it's so huge. I feel like that's still
00:15:47.339 --> 00:15:48.399
something I'm still learning.
00:15:48.759 --> 00:15:55.059
And I've been living for a while, but, you know, I'm still trying to learn what
00:15:55.059 --> 00:15:58.399
it is, you know, that I could do in terms of legacy is concerned.
00:15:59.950 --> 00:16:04.450
During young, I've been living for 62 years and I'm still, I still believe in
00:16:04.450 --> 00:16:09.690
building a legacy, not just for my family, but for others also,
00:16:09.850 --> 00:16:10.690
because it's like you said,
00:16:11.030 --> 00:16:16.490
we know for a fact that women, the things that we do as women,
00:16:16.610 --> 00:16:19.170
not just as leaders, but women in general,
00:16:19.550 --> 00:16:26.090
it's not, we don't really hear about these things because, you know, we're overshadowed.
00:16:26.090 --> 00:16:29.950
And then, you know, I don't want to get into politics, but with this current
00:16:29.950 --> 00:16:34.450
situation that we're in, everything that we are building up,
00:16:34.650 --> 00:16:37.850
it's being taken away from us, especially, like I said, the women.
00:16:38.070 --> 00:16:43.910
So we have to, even in some small way, to continue to uplift women and bring
00:16:43.910 --> 00:16:45.430
their stories to the forefront.
00:16:45.590 --> 00:16:49.730
It's like you said, it doesn't have to be, oh, this woman did such a great job
00:16:49.730 --> 00:16:53.930
and built this great foundation and company and stuff. No, it's the little things
00:16:53.930 --> 00:16:58.370
we do where we start off by we're sharing information and learning to uplift
00:16:58.370 --> 00:17:00.230
each other, collaboration.
00:17:00.610 --> 00:17:05.390
We need to bring this out to the forefront to show what we are doing and to
00:17:05.390 --> 00:17:09.890
get our message out there. You know, that women are powerful leaders.
00:17:10.470 --> 00:17:14.190
We are. And even though it's not out there the way it should be,
00:17:14.390 --> 00:17:20.110
we do know for a fact that we are an integral part of leadership.
00:17:20.570 --> 00:17:24.930
We're not getting the same pay, you know, like the men get still.
00:17:25.210 --> 00:17:30.770
We don't understand why. But nevertheless, we're still out there and we're making a huge impact.
00:17:31.030 --> 00:17:35.870
So continue to build that legacy. And age has nothing to do with building a
00:17:35.870 --> 00:17:39.430
legacy. We can do this until God calls us home.
00:17:39.810 --> 00:17:42.050
So continue doing what you're doing.
00:17:42.470 --> 00:17:46.530
Thank you for that. Okay, so now let's end with this.
00:17:47.010 --> 00:17:53.050
What are you working on right now that feels deeply aligned with your purpose and growth?
00:17:54.710 --> 00:17:59.850
That's a beautiful question. And to your point, I definitely agree with you.
00:18:00.030 --> 00:18:05.790
There's definitely not an age to legacy, But that is something I do think about
00:18:05.790 --> 00:18:10.470
more of what legacy I would like to leave behind in terms of leadership.
00:18:10.870 --> 00:18:16.630
So as I mentioned earlier, books. So that's something I'm looking into and really
00:18:16.630 --> 00:18:22.250
making more impact as it relates to corporate clients, as well as,
00:18:22.250 --> 00:18:25.230
you know, opportunities to speak and share my voice.
00:18:25.230 --> 00:18:30.430
So that way it could be, whether that is collaboration, like what I'm doing right now.
00:18:30.490 --> 00:18:35.450
So I'd like to connect more towards collaboration on a grander scale.
00:18:35.450 --> 00:18:40.330
So something in the future, for sure, that would bring the voices of different
00:18:40.330 --> 00:18:45.410
women leaders together. I do actually have something in the works for October.
00:18:45.730 --> 00:18:51.590
So there is going to be an event that is geared towards women leaders.
00:18:51.870 --> 00:18:56.250
Those who are executives are interested in that. And I'll be,
00:18:57.043 --> 00:19:01.903
Basically partnering with two other wonderful ladies, and we'll definitely promote
00:19:01.903 --> 00:19:03.543
more information about that in the future.
00:19:04.543 --> 00:19:10.423
Also, you know, I think just in general, just me honoring my own legacy for
00:19:10.423 --> 00:19:15.003
myself, which is just prioritizing peace and being that example.
00:19:15.183 --> 00:19:18.883
Right. Because a lot of times we think of leadership as it has to be this like
00:19:18.883 --> 00:19:22.363
massive thing of you're the executive of a top company.
00:19:22.363 --> 00:19:26.183
But it can also leadership can also just be you making
00:19:26.183 --> 00:19:29.103
the decision to prioritize your piece in
00:19:29.103 --> 00:19:34.443
your day you making the decision to manage your energy and that really helping
00:19:34.443 --> 00:19:38.003
you to align a little bit better because I find for myself when I try to do
00:19:38.003 --> 00:19:44.623
the traditional way of leadership with client interaction it can be a little
00:19:44.623 --> 00:19:49.083
bit cantankerous for me or a little tedious where it can help initially.
00:19:49.083 --> 00:19:54.143
So you're able to just get things done. But I think for me, learning to lean
00:19:54.143 --> 00:20:00.483
into my natural strengths, which are intuition and wanting to see just the best of other people,
00:20:01.023 --> 00:20:05.503
seeing that, being able to communicate that effectively to my clients and making
00:20:05.503 --> 00:20:09.283
sure they're able to reach their goals and not just, you know,
00:20:09.443 --> 00:20:12.903
gain skills, but skills that will help them throughout their lifetime.
00:20:13.723 --> 00:20:19.943
And yeah, to the earlier point, I will say I do actually mention people who
00:20:19.943 --> 00:20:23.643
are significantly younger than me when I talk about women's history,
00:20:23.683 --> 00:20:28.343
because we've had some young people do some amazing things to people who are
00:20:28.343 --> 00:20:30.743
no longer with us, who live long lives.
00:20:30.883 --> 00:20:37.803
So I love the diversity of the leaders that I admire, and I hope that somehow
00:20:37.803 --> 00:20:42.623
I can impart some wisdom so others can grow in their worthiness, right?
00:20:42.803 --> 00:20:45.183
And also just their wellness overall.
00:20:45.943 --> 00:20:52.503
To the earlier point, yes, I take a holistic approach and I want to continue with that. So thank you.
00:20:54.162 --> 00:21:00.482
Absolutely. Thank you for being who you are, for being out there, for empowering.
00:21:00.642 --> 00:21:04.062
I know we're not supposed to use that word, but that is what you're doing.
00:21:04.262 --> 00:21:09.002
You're empowering not just yourself, but you're empowering your leaders and
00:21:09.002 --> 00:21:14.342
the future generation to see themselves for who they really are and to put them
00:21:14.342 --> 00:21:18.902
in that space and give them that opportunity to really grow and reach their potential.
00:21:18.902 --> 00:21:23.622
So I truly appreciate what you're doing and continue doing so.
00:21:23.802 --> 00:21:27.882
And once you get your program out, I try my best, but you know,
00:21:27.962 --> 00:21:29.042
my schedule is just crazy.
00:21:29.162 --> 00:21:32.402
I try to be there, you know, for the things that you're doing.
00:21:32.622 --> 00:21:36.622
So feel free to share that information with me. I try to do my best to see how
00:21:36.622 --> 00:21:40.942
I can plug in and to just give you the support that you need.
00:21:41.042 --> 00:21:45.002
Because that, in essence, is what it's all about. It's about supporting each
00:21:45.002 --> 00:21:51.362
other as we build and grow. So, Charity, I want to thank you so much for being
00:21:51.362 --> 00:21:54.902
here today and sharing your heart, your wisdom, and your light.
00:21:55.262 --> 00:21:59.442
