00:00:01.439 --> 00:00:08.240
Most people spend their entire lives stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want and what's important.
00:00:09.279 --> 00:00:14.560
See how we heard a couple of that noise connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live.
00:00:15.039 --> 00:00:17.600
I used to live away the copper job and I hate it.
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:20.640
But I broke through the software too much.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:24.079
As a result, I have my own coffee company.
00:00:24.239 --> 00:00:25.440
I'm just complaining.
00:00:25.920 --> 00:00:28.160
And I get this crap in the world.
00:00:28.399 --> 00:00:30.800
You too can live a life that you live.
00:00:31.039 --> 00:00:32.320
But it starts with completely.
00:00:33.840 --> 00:00:34.960
It starts within this.
00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:37.840
I'm your host, Donnie Rouse.
00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:40.079
You are listening to the podcast.
00:00:40.399 --> 00:00:41.359
One life.
00:00:56.479 --> 00:01:17.840
So I just got back from a trip to Asia and I wanted to share three of the key awarenesses and lessons that I learned while I was there because I feel like they would have a huge impact on your life if you just become aware of what the forces were, but also what you were being called for and what you really want inside.
00:01:18.319 --> 00:01:26.079
Because isn't it true that when you are in the rough of it, when you're in all that noise, that it's very difficult sometimes to hear your own voice?
00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:37.120
So the three things are awarenesses and lessons kind of combined that I want to share with you are one, just the noise that you are surrounded by every single day.
00:01:37.760 --> 00:01:40.159
Secondly, is just the power of the culture scape.
00:01:40.319 --> 00:01:45.200
Like wherever you are, your environment is shaping you, either for good, either for bad.
00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:47.680
But you are being shaped by your environment.
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:51.280
So when you become aware, then you could decide how you want to change.
00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:53.040
Maybe it's a new environment.
00:01:53.359 --> 00:01:55.920
Thirdly, attachments.
00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:00.560
What are you attached to that's holding you back from taking that next step in your life?
00:02:00.719 --> 00:02:07.439
So we'll go over all these lessons and I'll tell you how I came, how these awarenesses came about in my trip.
00:02:07.680 --> 00:02:08.560
So I just came back.
00:02:08.639 --> 00:02:09.919
I was in Asia for a month.
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:17.360
The first trip, well, actually, the I big thing before I even start there, I should kind of tell you what the mindset is before there.
00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:28.719
So before I leave for my trip in November, usually I am in a place where I just need to get the heck out of here because work has been picking up, thankfully.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:33.759
And as a result of that, like I usually get near that burnout mode in August, right?
00:02:33.840 --> 00:02:40.159
And like the uh the personal growth should be like, all right, well, knowing that you get that way in August, what can you do differently?
00:02:40.240 --> 00:02:40.400
Right?
00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:42.240
That that comes with awareness.
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:48.719
So August is where I start feeling that itch, like, all right, I need to really, really take a break.
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:53.199
November comes around, and that is actually when I start to take the break.
00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:56.879
So the moment I step on that flight, it is just a release.
00:02:56.960 --> 00:03:02.800
It's like, all right, finally, I get to I get to have some fun, breathe, meet new people.
00:03:03.520 --> 00:03:07.120
And I uh so when I landed, I landed in Bangkok.
00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:10.800
Right when I landed, it was just a world of difference.
00:03:11.039 --> 00:03:24.159
I ended up getting dinner with a friend, and then the following morning venturing out and finding a a uh local market and having the most amazing basil, uh pork basil that cost me like a dollar thirty.
00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:25.599
It was something ridiculous.
00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:29.520
Uh, but anyways, I had met and then I just started meeting people all of a sudden.
00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:35.199
I probably met easily over 100 people, if not maybe like a few hundred people this past trip.
00:03:35.599 --> 00:03:37.599
So Thailand was kind of the start to it.
00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:40.960
I had an amazing time, and then I went over to Laos.
00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:45.280
And so it takes me a little bit of time to kind of find my groove.
00:03:45.439 --> 00:03:52.960
When I was in Laos, I was still felt very tourist because if you're gonna go to Laos, you're not going to like the you're not going to the outskirts of Laos, right?
00:03:53.120 --> 00:03:54.960
At least I didn't on this trip.
00:03:55.199 --> 00:03:59.520
I didn't go south of um the capital, Vientien.
00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:05.280
But while I was in Laos, I went to Luamprobang, which is a UNESCO heritage site.
00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:11.919
So you know they're getting a lot of tourists there, and that the entire the the place is built up for tourism, right?
00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:12.879
I I knew that, right?
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:18.399
I'm in Luamprebang, was having coffee, everyone was making coffee the same way that they do it here.
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:22.959
They're making espresso, and I was like, I don't want espresso, I want Laoxian coffee.
00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:24.959
Give me Laotian coffee.
00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:31.279
Long story short, it would take me, I would have to go to Vong Bien, and then later from Vong Bien to Ventian.
00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:38.639
And my last day in Ventian, I would find uh the one place that would make Laotian coffee.
00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:42.480
And then I was on to Malaysia and then to Sri Lanka.
00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:44.240
But this isn't about coffee.
00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:48.560
So I I had Malaysia, I ended up spending uh two nights there.
00:04:48.639 --> 00:04:50.639
I got there late in the day.
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:56.800
Next day I had a full day and meeting a uh Roy and another girl, her name is Jessica.
00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:10.560
Jessica or Sarah, I think Jessica, from Germany, and we ended up having a blast eating our way through Malaysia as well as tasting and becoming connoisseurs of durian fruit, the the stinkiest fruit of all.
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:14.240
Uh, and then I was on my way to Sri Lanka.
00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:16.079
Okay, this is where it all really, really starts.
00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:19.199
Although it did start in Laos as well, but this is where it really starts.
00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:26.319
So the first thing I noticed when I was there, well, actually, when I was in Laos, my uh my first experience of Laos was in Colombo.
00:05:27.199 --> 00:05:38.240
And um, wanting to kind of hit the ground running because I didn't know how much time I was gonna spend there, I met a girl from uh Switzerland and Spain, and they were going out, they were gonna go to this this market, this Indian market.
00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:40.399
I was like, sure, sign me up, I'll go with you.
00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:41.600
Oh my God.
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:55.920
And we we go to this market, and it was the most overwhelming thing I've ever experienced because you're on the street, and all of a sudden, I mean you couldn't turn without losing an arm.
00:05:56.079 --> 00:06:01.040
There's like scooters, people, like uh construction materials like going by you.
00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:05.600
The streets were packed, and this is what I imagine India is gonna be like when I go there.
00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:11.199
And I was just so overstimulated that I was like, you know what, I'm leaving Colombo tomorrow.
00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:13.120
Thankfully I didn't.
00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:25.120
And so uh after that experience, I went back and I was like, all right, let me before I decide to leave Colombo, let me see if I could find this mysterious uh this mysterious Marcella coffee.
00:06:25.279 --> 00:06:34.240
If you don't know about my love of coffee and why it makes me how it's like the the the basis of my travels, then we'll get in that in a different story.
00:06:34.399 --> 00:07:02.800
This whole story is for a different time, but as I was there, and like a once in a while I would kind of go online, I would check my Instagram, and uh the moment I would open the app, it was just like ads, you know, people selling, and I realized just one how much noise there is, there is in in my life, and probably more so maybe in other people's lives.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:11.600
And I as now I'm I'm very conscious of how much time I spend on Instagram, how much time I spend watching TV, the news.
00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:13.680
Be honest with you, I don't even watch TV.
00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:21.920
People are always amazed, like, well, you don't know who this person is, this actor might they're on this hit show, or you haven't heard what's going on in the world, it's all over the news.
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:23.839
I'm like, I don't watch the news.
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:43.439
And so I unplug from that, but even so, there is still so much noise going on because there's all these, you know, you you turn on Instagram for that moment, and all of a sudden you're comparing yourself to something, and all of a sudden you're going off on tangents that you don't even know that you're going after.
00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:55.439
So you the life is just filled with so much noise, and as a result of shutting it out and stepping outside of it, all of a sudden now you become aware of just how much there really is.
00:07:56.560 --> 00:07:58.560
Which brings me to this second point.
00:07:58.639 --> 00:08:06.480
And I guess if I had to give you an example of how you know so this way you could imagine and picture it and know what it's like.
00:08:06.639 --> 00:08:08.639
It's like um Lord of the Rings.
00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:21.920
You know, when he he takes the ring and he puts it on, all of a sudden he's transported to like this dark place and he hears all this whisper, it's like and then he takes it off, and all of a sudden he's back in like the forest.
00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:23.759
It's kind of like that.
00:08:24.079 --> 00:08:32.000
So the when you step out of the noise and when you go back in, all of a sudden you see how loud that noise really is.
00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:36.320
So I was there and I was just like, Oh my god.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:48.320
Like, you know, I now someone who I consider as pretty disconnected in the sense that I I very much am conscious and limit how much time I spend online, how much time I spend watching anything on TV.
00:08:48.559 --> 00:08:54.720
And yet it was, I was still blown away just by how much it was present in my life.
00:08:55.279 --> 00:09:04.159
So I was like, man, like there's so much noise that is just preventing you from hearing what you're calling is doing what you want to do.
00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:06.399
Bring me in the second point.
00:09:06.559 --> 00:09:14.000
And I was I was I was watching there, I would like it and like I would I'd flick on to Instagram because I would want to update some of my friends, my family.
00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:19.039
Uh, and all of a sudden I see all these ads, people like, oh, do you want to live longer?
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:20.720
Do you want to have more energy?
00:09:20.879 --> 00:09:21.519
All this stuff.
00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:26.639
And I realized just from experiencing and interacting with the people there, people are just living.
00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:35.279
Like people back home here in the United States, Western culture spend all this time trying to extend life when it's just busyness.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:42.159
You spend all this time trying to extend life only to realize that you're missing out on it.
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:46.399
And again, I'm I'm if I'm saying you, I'm it's directly related to me, right?
00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:50.639
Because I'm seeing the world through my own eyes and how I'm experiencing it.
00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:51.120
Right?
00:09:51.200 --> 00:10:24.080
All the time at the gym, all the time trying to do the let me grow the wheatgrass, let me do this, let me, oh, I gotta take a spoon of olive oil a day, all these things to try to extend and uh enhance life or actually detracting from it because now all of a sudden, like you have a million things to do, so much so that like your day spent doing those things, and you just missed out on living, interacting, maybe working on your your passion and interacting with people that you really care about.
00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:50.720
And so, like, I I realized I'm like, oh my god, and I I thought one of my friends in particular, who spent spends so much time, God bless her, caring for her family, and it looks like she's running ragged, it looks like she she's about to like literally snap, but she's doing all of these things, and I could tell that the energy around these things that she's doing is anxious energy, and that she's gonna burn out.
00:10:51.679 --> 00:11:01.360
And I I I tell you this, and I tell myself this because you gotta realize like what is really gonna move the marker, health, right?
00:11:01.519 --> 00:11:04.000
Going to the gym, okay, that moves a marker, right?
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:05.279
Because you want to feel good.
00:11:05.519 --> 00:11:07.120
The food you put in your body, okay.
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:09.679
We have we have direct control over that, right?
00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:19.840
We want to put good food in our body, but there's a lot of things we add on that aren't adding the value that they should, and therefore they should just be let go of.
00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:24.080
And I'm um I'm trying to think of well, that was the example that I wanted to share with you.
00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:28.000
It was my friend in particular, because that was the first image that came to mind.
00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:35.279
And the last part, uh, the third lesson was um, and I mean this the quick lessons.
00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:41.440
I'll I'll I'll follow up with this uh with a different podcast, but attachments.
00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:58.480
So my last literally circling all the way around, and uh I was in um back in Colombo, so this is the end of my trip now, and I was gonna book the hostel that I was uh I initially stated, but I was like, you know what?
00:11:58.639 --> 00:11:59.600
I'm not going back there.
00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:02.639
One because something rubbed me the wrong.
00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:08.240
Oh yeah, there was a guy who I thought was really obnoxious who was working behind the uh in the kitchen there.
00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:13.039
And um, so I was like, screw them, I'm not going back there.
00:12:13.279 --> 00:12:17.519
And uh so I decided to book a different hostel, and it's funny how things happen.
00:12:17.679 --> 00:12:19.039
Everything happens for a reason.
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:20.960
So I was like catching a train.
00:12:21.039 --> 00:12:24.159
I was actually gonna stay in uh the place where I was.
00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:30.159
I was in um oh my god, trying to rem uh Ahangama, Ahangama Beach.
00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:39.279
And I was gonna stay there a little bit longer, but I decided to get on the uh to get on, I don't know if I took a I took a bus from uh no, I took a train.
00:12:39.360 --> 00:12:41.120
I oh my gosh, I'm forgetting my trip.
00:12:41.279 --> 00:12:43.919
I ended up taking a train back up to Colombo.
00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:52.480
And uh and I'm so happy that I did because I ended up meeting a group of people back in Colombo on my last day.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:54.559
And it's just funny how things happen.
00:12:54.720 --> 00:12:59.440
And I met this one girl who was probably one of the most intriguing people that I met the entire trip.
00:12:59.600 --> 00:13:03.519
Uh, she had been traveling for 13 years.
00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:12.000
13 years, and I was like, Well, I mean, I I usually say, Well, wow, that's that's amazing, that's a dream.
00:13:12.080 --> 00:13:19.120
But like, and then I'm like, well, but would I really want to travel 13 years and not feel planted in one place?
00:13:19.840 --> 00:13:22.080
I mean, that's that each person's own decision.
00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:24.639
So I was talking to her and I was like, Well, what is that like?
00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:33.120
And one of the things she shared with me that I found so profound was she was telling me, she's like, Well, you have to learn how to let go of attachments.
00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:34.720
What do you mean?
00:13:34.879 --> 00:13:40.960
She's like, you have to learn how to like you know, like let go of your attachment to things, people, circumstances.
00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:48.799
And I I I thought about that, and I'm like, well, what is what's the right balance for me?
00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:54.559
Because like I I've traveled for outside the country for a month, and sometimes I am like, get me the hell out of here.
00:13:54.639 --> 00:13:56.639
I just want to go back home, have my routine.
00:13:56.799 --> 00:14:00.559
Like when you're traveling for 13 years, you got to find your routines.
00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:04.720
But in and you know, but then it's like you're you're losing your whole routine.
00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:13.519
But maybe that's part of the appeal because by stepping outside, then you start to realize what really matters to you.
00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:16.000
But I was thinking about the attachments.
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:25.120
I started to think about attachments to business, attachments to people, attachments to a idea of how I am supposed to live.
00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:29.039
And and then so it really, really stuck with me.
00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:34.399
It was she was the most interesting person that I met on the trip just because of her lifestyle choices.
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:42.240
I mean, I could go, there were it went much deeper than this, but I'm only gonna share this aspect of it, partially because the other parts were probably a little bit private.
00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:46.320
And I'm sure she wouldn't mind if I share them, and maybe I will in a different episode.
00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:53.440
But then when I came back home, all of a sudden I'm like, oh my God, I'm going back home.
00:14:53.759 --> 00:15:02.080
And when I was there, all these like new awarenesses about how I wanted to live my life, live my businesses, where I wanted to be.
00:15:02.399 --> 00:15:11.279
One of the things I I had uh always I always spoke about was living outside of the United States and living outside of my my hometown of Stanford.
00:15:12.240 --> 00:15:18.720
And that desire really, like as well as many other desires, came back into my consciousness.
00:15:18.960 --> 00:15:27.600
I mean, that that desire never left my consciousness, but the the that alarm kind of went off, realizing that like, you know, like time is limited.
00:15:27.679 --> 00:15:29.600
You don't know how much time you have left.
00:15:29.840 --> 00:15:33.919
And one of the things I liked whenever I was there, and again, this is outside looking in.
00:15:34.080 --> 00:15:42.720
I mean, inside looking out, I should say, not outside looking in, inside looking out, like from so I'm fill coloring the the world with my own with my own lens.
00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:57.759
But I would see people when I was in Lao, and uh they might have they were day laborers, they would they might just finish work and then they would just sit on the side of the street under these, like these like huts that were kind of like with like uh some kind of like leaves covering it, right?
00:15:57.840 --> 00:16:12.320
It could be raining around them, they're just sitting there enjoying time with family, and I realized like how amazing is that like they finish, work's done, and they're then they just relax versus the busyness that is was going on in my own head.
00:16:12.799 --> 00:16:21.919
And so it just made me think about what was working and what wasn't working in my life, and maybe that's where I'm gonna leave it off now because it's probably the most important question to ask, right?
00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:24.799
It's easy to look, say, where do I what do I want?
00:16:24.960 --> 00:16:27.440
Like, what is it that I want to create in the future, right?
00:16:27.519 --> 00:16:33.039
But that's kind of abstract in a way because you have to base it on where you are right now.
00:16:33.600 --> 00:16:34.960
So, where are you right now?
00:16:35.039 --> 00:16:36.559
Let's look at your past year.
00:16:36.799 --> 00:16:38.960
This is where I'm gonna get all life coaching on you.
00:16:39.039 --> 00:16:40.960
Look at let's look at your past year.
00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:44.240
Like, what was the experience of your last year?
00:16:44.559 --> 00:16:47.360
Like, what things did you were bothering you?
00:16:47.440 --> 00:16:49.120
What things did you say you wanted to change?
00:16:49.279 --> 00:16:51.360
What things are no longer working?
00:16:52.320 --> 00:16:56.639
Now let's look at those things and say, well, how do you want to step forward in the next year?
00:16:57.200 --> 00:17:12.640
You say we we adopt these philosophies on how to live and how we have to be, but we never stop and check back in to upgrade these philosophies or these maps we have for the different areas of our life.
00:17:13.119 --> 00:17:16.000
Going back to what I had said about living in Connecticut, right?
00:17:16.079 --> 00:17:17.599
Like it it's a map.
00:17:17.920 --> 00:17:23.119
I was like, oh, I being here, my family's here, I have to plant my roots here, right?
00:17:23.200 --> 00:17:26.720
But if it's not working for me, then what am I doing?
00:17:27.119 --> 00:17:30.319
So that is just a metaphor for every area of your life.
00:17:30.400 --> 00:17:37.680
Like your health, like what habits are you doing that are not serving you that you know are not serving, you don't even get the enjoyment from them anymore.
00:17:38.319 --> 00:17:41.519
And then what do you have to do in the next year to shift that?
00:17:41.680 --> 00:17:45.599
Like, what will your new philosophy on health be?
00:17:46.880 --> 00:18:04.000
And it's super important to check in and to learn from the experiences that we're having in life because otherwise we just keep repeating it day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year.
00:18:06.720 --> 00:18:12.960
And the the the alarm that goes off is that there is no time to waste.
00:18:14.240 --> 00:18:18.319
And I had a a brief conversation with a friend.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:22.160
And it and it's it's an easy way to just write it off.
00:18:22.480 --> 00:18:31.119
It's true, but at the same time, it's just a sh it's just a safe way of explaining why you're living your life.
00:18:31.839 --> 00:18:37.359
So we were talking about circumstances in our lives, and she's like, Well, you know what?
00:18:37.680 --> 00:18:41.759
There is no wrong because eventually you're just gonna figure it out because life is always happening for you.
00:18:41.839 --> 00:18:44.319
I'm like, Well, yeah, yeah, I agree.
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:45.920
Life is always happening for you.
00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:51.279
But sometimes life is sitting there with a hammer, smacking you in the head, saying, Listen up, listen up.
00:18:51.519 --> 00:19:03.200
I am giving you a message here, listen up, and it keeps hitting you, and it's gonna hit you harder and harder, screaming louder and louder until you wake up to start to make the changes that you know you want.
00:19:04.400 --> 00:19:04.720
Right?
00:19:04.880 --> 00:19:07.440
So, yes, life is always happening for you.
00:19:08.240 --> 00:19:17.119
But listen to the the cues that you're being given, listen to that alarm call that's going off saying, Hey, life is short.
00:19:17.279 --> 00:19:18.720
What are you doing?
00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:22.160
You know, so and and and I respect that, right?
00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:30.400
Because in many ways, I probably operate from that that philosophy, and I know there's changes I need to make.
00:19:31.359 --> 00:19:41.599
But realizing the propensity of your mind to put things off and say, oh, well, maybe it's not that bad, you know, it life is gonna figure itself out.
00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:44.559
What you're really doing is you're avoiding.
00:19:45.359 --> 00:19:53.279
Again, I'm not I'm not throwing stones at you because this is I'm I'm looking at and I'm explaining this to you through the lens of my own life.
00:19:54.319 --> 00:19:56.480
So what are you avoiding?
00:19:57.039 --> 00:19:57.359
Right?
00:19:57.440 --> 00:20:00.720
And then just imagine, put yourself on the other side of it.
00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:03.599
Like, what is life gonna be like once you make that change?
00:20:03.680 --> 00:20:05.839
And it's sometimes it's hard, you won't even know.
00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:10.079
But I encourage you just to listen to your own heart.
00:20:10.400 --> 00:20:15.440
And that is that's like the listen to your own heart and just see where it's calling you.
00:20:15.519 --> 00:20:17.279
Even sometimes even that could be deceiving.
00:20:17.359 --> 00:20:20.960
Because I've done many things where I'm like, oh, where's my heart calling?
00:20:21.440 --> 00:20:22.960
I'm feeling pulled in this direction.
00:20:23.119 --> 00:20:25.440
Then I really, you know, you you're going in a direction.
00:20:25.519 --> 00:20:28.480
It's really, I don't know if you even know if you're really being pulled in that direction.
00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:34.799
It's just because it is what's so familiar that you're like, okay, this is right because it feels right.
00:20:34.880 --> 00:20:40.720
And the only reason why it feels right is because you've been doing it over and over and over and over for the last 10, 20 years.
00:20:42.240 --> 00:20:44.000
So, what changes do you need to make?
00:20:44.079 --> 00:20:46.559
Let emotion be your guide.
00:20:47.519 --> 00:20:50.559
Like positive emotions, go for it.
00:20:50.880 --> 00:20:52.079
Negative emotions, all right.
00:20:52.160 --> 00:20:55.440
What do I need to change or what do I need to do differently?
00:20:57.200 --> 00:21:01.599
One of the uh one of the I so I was thinking about this for my own life.
00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:06.000
And I was like, all right, well, what things do I need to do differently?
00:21:06.319 --> 00:21:11.039
One of those things uh comes around my production because I wouldn't get the fulfillment out of it.
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:22.000
Like I would I literally would feel like I was working myself down to the bone because I would just be so drained and like and overwhelmed from all right, again, good reason, right?
00:21:22.079 --> 00:21:23.119
Things picked up this year.
00:21:23.279 --> 00:21:24.000
That's great.
00:21:24.240 --> 00:21:29.039
So again, I either give it up altogether or have to do things differently.
00:21:29.599 --> 00:21:32.880
I kind of adopted, wanted to do some things differently.
00:21:33.039 --> 00:21:37.039
So one of the things I wanted I saw from my life is like, again, I want to travel more.
00:21:37.119 --> 00:21:40.079
I alright, you'd be like, Donnie, you travel twice a month.
00:21:40.160 --> 00:21:42.079
I mean, twice a year for a month at a time.
00:21:42.240 --> 00:21:43.680
What do you mean you want to travel more?
00:21:43.839 --> 00:21:46.160
I want to live outside the United States.
00:21:46.240 --> 00:21:48.799
I want to experience a different culture, but I also want to come back too, right?
00:21:48.880 --> 00:21:50.319
I want the best of both worlds.
00:21:50.559 --> 00:21:55.279
So as a result of this, and it happened through an interaction I had.
00:21:55.680 --> 00:21:59.759
I met this German guy, Matthias, and uh, we started talking.
00:22:00.480 --> 00:22:12.000
He he did photo editing and um and and through the conversation I was like oh you know what maybe I'll start downloading Lightroom and editing my photos.
00:22:12.160 --> 00:22:30.400
Editing my photos ended up turning into doing video like making videos and this trip I really stepped into the the uh the persona of a content creator of a uh a lifestyle vlogger or a coffee a coffee vlogger.
00:22:30.559 --> 00:22:37.279
So in the areas that I went to, I I recorded my coffee experiences giving my inputs on the coffees that I was having.
00:22:37.680 --> 00:22:44.319
And while I was there, I actually really felt like this was my identity, right?
00:22:44.480 --> 00:22:47.599
Because in in as I was going through it, it just felt very natural to me.
00:22:47.680 --> 00:22:52.000
This actually happened just before I was doing a review of a cafe in New York City.
00:22:52.559 --> 00:22:57.759
And so things just kind of started stacking, and I saw myself getting some momentum.
00:22:58.000 --> 00:23:00.480
And so when I got back, I was like, well, what do I want to do more of?
00:23:00.559 --> 00:23:01.279
What am I being called?
00:23:01.440 --> 00:23:05.119
And it's funny how this one interaction, actually, there was a couple interactions.
00:23:05.279 --> 00:23:13.039
One was uh this time last year, I met a guy named Colt who is pretty prolific on Instagram.
00:23:13.200 --> 00:23:23.039
I don't know if he does YouTube, but he he's pretty big on Instagram, so much so that he gets invited to speak at conferences for uh for the content he creates on social media.
00:23:23.839 --> 00:23:28.160
So when I met him, like I had missed my flight to Seoul, South Korea.
00:23:28.240 --> 00:23:34.880
And then I was sitting in the airport, tired as all hell, because I I don't even think I slept for like two days.
00:23:35.039 --> 00:23:39.119
And I saw him creating content in the airport, and we just started having a conversation.
00:23:39.359 --> 00:23:44.400
Like at that point, I was still nervous about stepping out and owning this uh this identity.
00:23:44.640 --> 00:23:46.240
So I was like telling him, I'm like, you know what?
00:23:46.319 --> 00:23:47.119
I'm gonna do it.
00:23:47.279 --> 00:23:48.880
And he's like, Yeah, man, I believe in you.
00:23:48.960 --> 00:23:49.519
Go ahead and do it.
00:23:49.599 --> 00:23:53.759
And then like I did some content, but I it was kind of like took a step forward, took a step back.
00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:57.359
So now I really felt myself embracing this new identity.
00:23:57.599 --> 00:24:09.119
So I am in the middle now of getting ready to post my first video on reviewing this cafe in New York City, an Italian cafe uh called Tazzador and Amazing Cafe, but you could watch that video on YouTube.
00:24:09.599 --> 00:24:15.519
Um, but that's one of the directions when I thought about how do I want to move forward.
00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:23.759
And one of those was to create content to make myself uh to make a thriving YouTube channel doing what I love.
00:24:23.839 --> 00:24:37.599
Like when I'm out in the in the world, when I was uh going back to Sri Lanka with some of my last days, I was with one of my friends, Flo, and we went to this, we went to, we were finding a place, looking for a place to watch the sunset.
00:24:38.480 --> 00:24:46.960
Needing to use a restroom, uh, we went into this hotel, this really, really nice hotel, and I started talking to the uh the guy behind the bar.
00:24:47.039 --> 00:24:50.079
And now here comes the coffee, here comes the coffee experiences.
00:24:50.160 --> 00:24:54.799
And I I can make a YouTube video just sharing or uh uh a podcast just sharing these.
00:24:54.960 --> 00:24:58.559
But we I went in there and I was like, hey, what do you have for coffee?
00:24:58.799 --> 00:25:10.160
And we because I wanted, I didn't, I feel always feel bad just going into a place and using the bathroom without you know uh buying something from them and and uh and patronizing the establishment, right?
00:25:10.720 --> 00:25:12.240
So they she went to use a bathroom.
00:25:12.319 --> 00:25:15.680
I was acquiring about the coffee, and then I he says, like, oh, launching coffee.
00:25:15.759 --> 00:25:17.119
I was like, what do you mean launching coffee?
00:25:17.279 --> 00:25:18.799
He's like, Oh, I make launching coffee.
00:25:18.880 --> 00:25:19.920
I was like, Well, how do you do it?
00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:21.119
He's like, Well, I steep it.
00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:21.920
I was like, done.
00:25:22.240 --> 00:25:24.160
So I'm like, right, I'm having coffee.
00:25:24.240 --> 00:25:28.559
I was so excited, like in literally the excitement level just turned on.
00:25:28.640 --> 00:25:32.640
Like it was like someone I went from like, well, I was actually feeling pretty good there.
00:25:32.799 --> 00:25:35.759
Say I went from like 60 up to like a thousand.
00:25:36.160 --> 00:25:39.039
I was so excited, and my friend Flo, she saw it in me.
00:25:39.119 --> 00:25:41.759
She's like, oh my God, you just like lit up.
00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:45.119
And um, this coffee, the coffee was actually delicious.
00:25:45.200 --> 00:25:49.839
So Laotian coffee, I'm sorry, I'm Sri Lankan coffee, not Laoshan coffee.
00:25:49.920 --> 00:25:50.559
I mean it.
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:57.039
Uh Sri Lankan coffee, what they do is they steep the coffee in hot water and then they filter it through uh through a strainer.
00:25:57.359 --> 00:26:04.000
The result is a coffee that is usually pretty rich, but also has this very, very unique mouthfeel.
00:26:04.160 --> 00:26:11.359
Because they're straining it through a strainer, there's a lot of fines that get through the coffee, uh, through to the to the to the final beverage.
00:26:11.599 --> 00:26:25.279
And that leaves it, it kind of muddles uh the the experience on your tongue, but in a good way, because it gives it like this this body that you don't get from like espresso or any of the other coffees that were being prepared there.
00:26:25.359 --> 00:26:26.880
So I was super excited.
00:26:27.119 --> 00:26:30.079
So uh now I'm gonna go into this coffee rant.
00:26:30.240 --> 00:26:35.200
So he's making the cup of coffee, and I see him pull out a pink sand bucket.
00:26:35.359 --> 00:26:36.799
I'm like, what the hell?
00:26:36.960 --> 00:26:44.799
It was a actually so much so that in my phone, the guy's name is Samir Pink Bucket Coffee.
00:26:44.960 --> 00:26:52.559
And he he started, he put hot water, and this is definitely not sanitary, hygienic, and probably even safe.
00:26:52.720 --> 00:26:53.519
But I drank it.
00:26:53.680 --> 00:27:01.359
Uh, so he pulls out a sand bucket, it was clean, there's no sand in it, and it pours the hot water with the coffee into the sand bucket and starts stirring it.
00:27:01.440 --> 00:27:04.240
I'm like, what the frick is going on right now?
00:27:04.640 --> 00:27:09.039
All right, I'm doing it, and so I have the coffee and it was delicious.
00:27:09.359 --> 00:27:14.079
Um, oh my god, why was I going on this rant about the coffee, anyways?
00:27:14.160 --> 00:27:18.960
So we we end up going outside and um and oh yeah, I remember now.
00:27:19.119 --> 00:27:35.039
We end up going outside and watching the sunset, but it was through that, like I realized just how much I light up and how much passion I have for experiencing coffees in different places, and then wanting to share it because it it's just kind of a it's a it's a way of self-expression for me now.
00:27:35.279 --> 00:27:43.279
And wanting to build that platform so this way that would actually leverage, I could leverage that through my my coffee company.
00:27:43.680 --> 00:27:46.160
And so all that was one of the big takeaways.
00:27:46.240 --> 00:27:54.319
I was like, you know what, if there's one bit of guidance or one kind of like string that I could that I could rope that I could follow, it is this.
00:27:54.400 --> 00:27:55.759
And then that's where I am now.
00:27:55.920 --> 00:27:57.920
So now stepping in this new persona.
00:27:58.160 --> 00:28:04.799
So I I tell you all of that just to share to go back to what I said before, right?
00:28:04.880 --> 00:28:06.559
Like, all right, there is the noise, right?
00:28:06.640 --> 00:28:18.640
The noise in life is keeping you from what you want to do because you can't think differently because you're just you're always trying to do the next thing, catch the next thing, you're stressed out, you're worried, you gotta do this, you gotta do that.
00:28:18.880 --> 00:28:20.640
You gotta cut out the noise.
00:28:20.880 --> 00:28:22.960
The second thing is your environment.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:26.240
Like, you don't even know how much your environment influences you.
00:28:26.319 --> 00:28:27.920
You may be thinking, well, you know what?
00:28:28.480 --> 00:28:34.319
I, you know, I I live at home, I have, you know, it's really quiet, there's nothing around me.
00:28:34.559 --> 00:28:36.400
My environment's very peaceful.
00:28:37.039 --> 00:28:38.079
Bullshit.
00:28:38.480 --> 00:28:47.279
Step outside the world, and you realize that it might be the case most of the time, but you're still influenced because of the culture scape we live in.
00:28:47.519 --> 00:28:55.519
And maybe if you surround yourself by if you have a tribe of people around you that all feel the same way, then maybe you could sustain that even more.
00:28:55.599 --> 00:29:07.599
But there is uh an influence that comes just from living in the culture scape, which my my call to action is just to step out of it.
00:29:07.680 --> 00:29:11.680
So this way, when you come back, you can see more clearly of it.
00:29:11.759 --> 00:29:14.240
And then the last one was attachments.
00:29:14.640 --> 00:29:17.759
Like you when you step outside, right?
00:29:17.839 --> 00:29:27.759
When all right, me going on this trip, I let go of all attachments, every single thing I experience is new, right?
00:29:27.920 --> 00:29:31.920
My mind doesn't have anything to grasp onto as a result of that.
00:29:32.240 --> 00:29:36.559
I really take in and experience everything, even the shitty cup of coffees I've had.
00:29:36.720 --> 00:29:39.279
Like so many bad cup, so many bad cups of coffee.
00:29:39.519 --> 00:29:41.759
It was like I I wanted to give up coffee.
00:29:41.839 --> 00:29:43.680
That's how bad it was in many of the places.
00:29:43.759 --> 00:29:50.400
Then eventually I would get teased by a good cup of coffee, only to be followed up by many, many bad coffees again.
00:29:50.640 --> 00:30:00.960
Um, but letting go of all the attachments, you start to realize what is it that you really need and want for your life.
00:30:01.279 --> 00:30:06.960
But also you let go of just the emotional baggage, you just kind of shrug it off.
00:30:08.000 --> 00:30:09.599
Real quick point on that.
00:30:09.759 --> 00:30:12.319
One of my accounts uh had messaged me.
00:30:12.400 --> 00:30:16.640
So I was on the plane, and um I was, you know, I stopped at the airport.
00:30:16.720 --> 00:30:23.759
I think I might have been like in transit, I think I might have just landed in Seoul, and I I turned on my phone and I get a message from one of my accounts.
00:30:23.920 --> 00:30:27.759
He's like, Hey, uh, why isn't your phone working?
00:30:27.920 --> 00:30:29.920
I tried calling you two times, we're out of coffee.
00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:35.680
I'm like, and normally I would respond like kind of like oh my god, they're out of coffee.
00:30:35.759 --> 00:30:36.319
What am I gonna do?
00:30:36.400 --> 00:30:37.839
I gotta call I gotta have someone drop it up.
00:30:38.799 --> 00:30:40.960
But I didn't attach myself to it.
00:30:41.920 --> 00:30:42.799
I let it go.
00:30:42.960 --> 00:30:43.839
It's not mine.
00:30:44.160 --> 00:30:52.799
I was like, Well, I texted you several times, and I notified you that I was gonna be abroad and that I would be communicating through email.
00:30:52.960 --> 00:30:58.960
I sent you three emails, you didn't respond to any, and then they're like, Well, I didn't, I don't, I don't check my email.
00:30:59.839 --> 00:31:01.119
I notified you before.
00:31:01.200 --> 00:31:07.519
And rather than getting all worked up by that, I remembered this this lesson from uh from my friend.
00:31:07.839 --> 00:31:12.640
I was like, I'm not gonna attach myself to the situation or the emotions in it.
00:31:13.759 --> 00:31:17.359
I let it go and I preserved my peace.
00:31:18.559 --> 00:31:22.400
So the the attachment has many different facets to it, right?
00:31:22.480 --> 00:31:41.039
You can look at your attachment to things, your attachments to be, but also the attachments to just the emotions that you experience on a given day, because we tend to cycle through our emotions, but letting go of that attachment, all of a sudden you're filled with peace, serenity, and you you you could think straight again.
00:31:41.680 --> 00:31:47.599
So to bring it all back and uh to make it so this way you could apply it to your own life.
00:31:47.759 --> 00:31:49.440
And with and I'll give you some questions.
00:31:49.599 --> 00:31:51.279
Again, is like the noise.
00:31:51.359 --> 00:31:54.160
I mean, you can't spend some time alone.
00:31:54.240 --> 00:31:59.519
Like turn off the TV, put your keep your phone somewhere else, and just go for a walk.
00:31:59.759 --> 00:32:00.000
Right?
00:32:00.160 --> 00:32:09.359
In in this, it might be difficult for you to shut out all the noise while you're here without doing something so extreme as traveling to a third world country.
00:32:09.519 --> 00:32:13.119
It was a third world country, but traveling outside the country to turn it off.
00:32:13.279 --> 00:32:16.799
Just go for a walk, but leave your devices behind.
00:32:17.200 --> 00:32:24.720
So this way you're not just you're not being distracted and go for a long walk, not like 30 minutes, go for an hour, go to the water.
00:32:24.960 --> 00:32:34.640
There's a song that's called Um actually, I don't uh follow Follow the Sun is the number of song, not the Beatles song, it's called Follow the Song, uh Follow the Sun.
00:32:34.799 --> 00:32:35.599
Listen to that.
00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:39.680
That is my uh message to you in in a song.
00:32:39.839 --> 00:32:42.640
Um but just get away from the noise.
00:32:43.440 --> 00:32:48.960
Secondly, the culture escape, right?
00:32:49.119 --> 00:32:56.480
Like step away and just realize how much of the culture escape is affecting you.
00:32:56.799 --> 00:33:07.839
And the culture escape could be the I mean, we live in a place, and God bless, because like you know, many people are thriving because of it, but we live in a consum uh a culture that is that thrives on consumerism, right?
00:33:07.920 --> 00:33:15.839
There's always something they're you know, the TV, something's trying to poke at you this way to trigger you into response.
00:33:15.920 --> 00:33:17.440
And they know how to do it very, very well.
00:33:17.599 --> 00:33:20.480
If you don't believe that, then guess again.
00:33:21.039 --> 00:33:27.920
Because billions, if not more, are spent every single year to get you to buy these products, to put news out.
00:33:28.000 --> 00:33:32.880
Because when you're in a state of fear, anxiety, you tend to make irrational decisions.
00:33:33.200 --> 00:33:36.079
You think you need certain things when you really don't.
00:33:36.319 --> 00:33:44.000
You'd be surprised at how few things you can get by with and how much happier you will be as a result of not of being more simple.
00:33:44.240 --> 00:33:48.000
But the culture scape, you have to realize that you are being affected.
00:33:48.160 --> 00:33:53.440
When you realize you are being affected, then you can start to see, well, well, how am I being affected and what really matters?
00:33:53.680 --> 00:33:55.920
And then thirdly, is your attachment.
00:33:56.160 --> 00:33:57.680
What are you attached to?
00:33:57.920 --> 00:34:05.519
Not just what are you attached to with objects and people, but what are you attached to in your personality that is no longer serving you?
00:34:06.240 --> 00:34:09.519
Because there are components of your personality that probably don't serve you.
00:34:09.599 --> 00:34:12.639
You picked them up when you were younger because it was a coping mechanism.
00:34:12.880 --> 00:34:15.360
One of these things is people pleasing.
00:34:15.679 --> 00:34:18.800
I realize that, like I I was a people pleaser, right?
00:34:18.880 --> 00:34:23.280
Like it's so much so I would I can feel the energy of any room I walk into.
00:34:23.599 --> 00:34:40.239
And while some people label it as an empath, Alan Watts, I was listening to a YouTube of his, it really is a coping mism because you, when you're growing up, you realize that you have to be able to read the room so this way, you know, to know if it's safe or not.
00:34:40.559 --> 00:34:42.880
And so I became very good at that.
00:34:42.960 --> 00:34:45.679
And as a result of that, like I was always try to people please.
00:34:46.079 --> 00:34:53.280
So not being attached to the the the components of the that make up your own identity.
00:34:53.360 --> 00:34:55.920
I mean, they it this can go very, very deep.
00:34:56.159 --> 00:35:05.119
And then lastly, just look at where you've been spending your time, how you've been living, what you've been doing, and decide is this how I want to move forward in my life?
00:35:05.280 --> 00:35:07.840
And you don't have to look at life because that can be a little bit overwhelming.
00:35:08.320 --> 00:35:12.079
Let me look at the last 50 years, I'm not 50, I'm 44.
00:35:12.719 --> 00:35:14.960
Last 44 years of my life.
00:35:15.440 --> 00:35:17.599
Is this how I wanted to live my life?
00:35:17.679 --> 00:35:20.159
Like what things I want that's kind of overwhelming.
00:35:20.400 --> 00:35:25.599
Let's look at the last year because your year gives you more clues as to how you should be moving forward.
00:35:25.760 --> 00:35:27.119
What are the things you complained about?
00:35:27.280 --> 00:35:33.599
What are the things that are no longer serving you in your health, your your relationships, your friendships, uh, your spiritual life?
00:35:34.079 --> 00:35:37.679
Maybe you adopted a dogma that is no longer serving you.
00:35:37.920 --> 00:35:39.920
What are the things that are no longer serving you?
00:35:40.000 --> 00:35:42.239
And what was the philosophy you were following?
00:35:42.400 --> 00:35:51.519
And what needs to change in order to you to turn a new stone, to go down a new path, and to lead to just more happiness and joy in your life.
00:35:52.159 --> 00:35:55.280
And then the only thing you got to do is just start to take new steps.
00:35:55.360 --> 00:36:00.800
You don't have to change everything at once because then you're gonna get overwhelmed, you're not gonna make any changes.
00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:06.000
One change is all I ask you to make this year.
00:36:06.320 --> 00:36:11.199
Because often with that one change comes a plethora of changes, right?
00:36:11.280 --> 00:36:20.079
Because you change one thing, it's usually they call it a keystone habit because one thing that you change literally has a domino effect and starts to change all the different areas of your life.
00:36:20.159 --> 00:36:23.760
So just pick one thing, one thing you're gonna do differently.
00:36:24.079 --> 00:36:28.480
And when you go into, well, I would hopefully you'll do a few, maybe a couple of things more, right?
00:36:28.559 --> 00:36:30.320
Like just change, maybe get healthier.
00:36:30.400 --> 00:36:34.960
And but do one thing that's gonna shift your life in a direction that you want to go.
00:36:35.599 --> 00:36:48.960
And then we'll check back in maybe halfway through next year, and hopefully you'll be in a very, very different place, a better place, just more happier, more present, more akin to what really matters in life.
00:36:49.199 --> 00:36:51.039
So that is it for this rant.
00:36:51.119 --> 00:36:53.840
It's been a while since I've uh come on here to do one of these episodes.
00:36:53.920 --> 00:37:05.519
So as a result, it could maybe uh, you know, it wasn't as polished as I would have liked to have been, but I I think you can still sense my passion and my intent behind coming on here.
00:37:05.760 --> 00:37:12.639
And what my my intention was for you as the listener of this, and what I want you to take away.
00:37:12.960 --> 00:37:17.039
Basically live your one life, right?
00:37:17.679 --> 00:37:20.800
I'll leave that this is the last little thing I'll say.
00:37:21.280 --> 00:37:24.159
Because that you know, a lot of people talk about purpose.
00:37:24.320 --> 00:37:25.599
Like, what is the purpose?
00:37:25.840 --> 00:37:28.559
And this is something I was thinking of when I came back.
00:37:28.800 --> 00:37:30.559
Is it what is the purpose of life?
00:37:30.800 --> 00:37:40.719
And the thing the the the like the answer is in the question the purpose is life, life is the purpose to live.
00:37:41.039 --> 00:37:43.440
So so go out there and live.
00:37:45.119 --> 00:37:47.840
Don't be afraid, everything is temporary.
00:37:48.000 --> 00:37:51.840
What is already in your life your is is what you already know.
00:37:52.159 --> 00:37:57.920
And you could always pretty much come back to what you have right now, uh for the most part.
00:37:58.239 --> 00:38:02.880
Um, so just get out there, take some risks, take some new, make some new decisions.
00:38:03.039 --> 00:38:06.559
And I wish you an amazing 2026.
00:38:06.719 --> 00:38:08.480
Can't believe we're saying that, 2026.
00:38:08.639 --> 00:38:09.599
But God bless you guys.
00:38:09.760 --> 00:38:11.199
Thank you so so much for tuning in.
00:38:11.360 --> 00:38:13.679
Uh again, Merry Christmas to you.
00:38:13.760 --> 00:38:15.679
We're about two days out from Christmas.
00:38:15.840 --> 00:38:16.639
Merry Christmas.
00:38:16.719 --> 00:38:20.400
God bless you guys, and I will see you again in the next episode.
