00:00:11
Speaker 2: Live from Hindmarsh Square, it's 5AA Breakfast. Will Goodings with Stacey Lee.
00:00:18
Speaker 3: Good morning to you. Welcome to Wednesday on 5AA Breakfast. The 21st of October, there's a pretty yellow glow emanating from over the hills, which suggests to me that maybe on the other side of the hills to our east this morning, there are or there is a magnificent sunrise. If that is the case, if you can confirm the suspicion with the photograph, as always, we appreciate it on 0 to 4808 1395. We'll put that up on the website. It is, more broadly speaking, as you've just heard in 5AA News, back to a cooler start to the day. 11.5 degrees. How's spring in Adelaide? We've gone from being the hottest capital city in the nation to start most days in this last week. Today, cooler than everywhere but Canberra, and even that is a fairly close-run thing. Coming up on the program, we're heading to France where things are just extraordinary. It's hard to put into words how civil unrest has devolved into something that is quite remarkable. We're chatting with an Australian who is there experiencing it and living through a curfew, of course, in place. That doesn't seem to have deterred people. Certainly around Marseille now, but we'll take you there after 6.30 today. We're going to spin for the smart watch. We're going to 747, which is always very exciting. We'll go around the courts with Sean Fuster. David Koch coming on, being a Wednesday morning. The police commissioner today will join us as well. I think that's fascinating. We know politicians around Australia have been the recipients of security advice that has informed their movements in the last 24 hours. Claire Cutterham is going to join us, was meant to host a street corner meeting. That's been canned. And I don't, frankly, blame her at the moment. I totally get it if politicians and their families are a little bit on edge. But we will chat with the police commissioner about the specific advice that the police are hearing and giving to our pollies. Stacey Lee, good morning to you.
00:02:00
Speaker 4: Good morning, Will.
00:02:01
Speaker 3: I want to start here this morning. I think generally speaking, Australians, maybe more so than other people, are sympathetic to our fellows that get fines. I mean in terms of, you know, I literally was going 48 and it just dropped down to a 40 zone and everyone says, ah. That sucks. Or I was pulling over to pick someone up in the city and that stupid AI car picked me up for three seconds.
00:02:27
Speaker 5: Yep.
00:02:28
Speaker 3: I think we all say stuff. We're always in the sign of the finee, not the fine-er. Except in this case, Sportsbet. Sportsbet have copped a $ 325, 000 fine. for breaching South Australian betting rules. They were running markets on a whole bunch of stuff that we have strong restrictions over. One of them was Live Golf, interestingly.
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.

That sucks. One of them was Live Golf, interestingly.
00:02:45
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:02:46
Speaker 3: UFC, esports, they got fined basically $ 100, 000 for each of those. Then there was a novelty event that they were running markets for. Anyway, $ 25, 000. I can't think of, an entity in Australia that fewer people would have sympathy for than a betting company getting fined. Erin, that's fair?
00:03:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's very fair. And, in fact, when I saw it, I went, oh, is that all they got fined?
00:03:07
Speaker 3: It seems paltry, doesn't it?
00:03:09
Speaker 4: Could the fine not have been bigger?
00:03:11
Speaker 3: Well, it feels like it should be one of those fine systems where it's calculated by revenue. You know how speeding fines in Norway?
00:03:18
Speaker 4: Maybe we should try and recoup some of the lack of tax from sports bets.
00:03:23
Speaker 3: Absolutely. Billions upon billions of dollars. They raked in some $ 2 billion. millions of dollars worth of money on these things illegally and only find a paltry component of that. It got us thinking this morning, who deserves a fine? Who deserves it?
00:03:39
Speaker 6: Yep.
00:03:39
Speaker 3: 8223 0000. You can text us on 04808 1395. And if you really want to go the extra step, you can tell us how much they should be fined. Oh, okay.
00:03:49
Speaker 2: All right.
00:03:49
Speaker 4: You can implement the fine yourself.
00:03:51
Speaker 3: I've got a couple of examples for you.
00:03:52
Speaker 5: Go on.
00:03:54
Speaker 3: I fined the Adelaide Football Club.
00:03:56
Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
00:03:57
Speaker 7: Yeah.
00:03:58
Speaker 4: I'm intrigued.
00:03:59
Speaker 3: Continue. I'd find them $ 3, 332, 000. Exactly. Okay. The Crows, I think the ACCC cracked down on shrinkflation recently. You can't do it. It's just dodgy practice. Having a worse list and arguably a worse coaching box and then charging people $ 40 on average extra to me is the football equivalent of shrinkflation.
00:04:22
Speaker 4: Oh, for the membership?
00:04:23
Speaker 3: Has it gone up that much? It's gone up, on average, $ 40 per person. $ 40, 83,000 members. They're about $ 3, 332, 000 is the fine for the Adelaide Football Club, I think. You've thought about this.
00:04:35
Speaker 4: I like it. Would that money go back.
00:04:37
Speaker 3: To the- Just to the punters.
00:04:39
Speaker 7: Yep.
00:04:39
Speaker 3: By way of maybe one drink- voucher for someone.
00:04:43
Speaker 4: A couple of drink vouchers each.
00:04:44
Speaker 3: I like that. I think we get a fine, $ 5 every time we incorrectly use the word jealous instead of envious. Wendy has inspired this. Wendy texts us all the time. And, Wendy, you're never too old to learn.
00:04:54
Speaker 4: Wendy, yep, you can collect that fine.
00:04:56
Speaker 3: I think Wendy deserves that fine. I like that. We're not alone on this one, I think. Jealous being used when you're actually envious of something. And this one, I just flabbergast me. I'd find RBA staff, the Reserve Bank.
00:05:12
Speaker 8: Oh, all right.
00:05:13
Speaker 3: Because they're slapping all of us with mortgages.
00:05:15
Speaker 9: Yeah.
00:05:16
Speaker 3: RBA staff rejected a 9.5% pay increase. Which is just funny on so many levels.
00:05:22
Speaker 4: What, over a couple of years?
00:05:23
Speaker 3: No, just a flat 9.5%. For one year? I believe so. They've rejected it. These are the people that say inflation's out of control, and to get it under control, you need to be spending less, a la under financial duress, and we need some more people out of jobs. That's what they're saying. Whilst rejecting a mammoth pay rise, you get a fine.
00:05:45
Speaker 4: I support all of those.
00:05:46
Speaker 2: All right.
00:05:48
Speaker 3: Yep, good.
00:05:48
Speaker 4: I'm on board.
00:05:49
Speaker 9: All right.
00:05:50
Speaker 4: One that I thought of, people who don't return shopping trolleys.
00:05:53
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:05:54
Speaker 10: Why?
00:05:54
Speaker 4: What's the extra few steps for you?
00:05:57
Speaker 3: Are you familiar with the shopping trolley return theory? I don't know if this has now become a popular internet theory or has a root in psychology. It's the idea that there are people that have been socialised to a point you could almost operate in a community without laws. The idea that if all laws- It's probably me.
00:06:18
Speaker 11: Yes.
00:06:19
Speaker 3: It is you, Stacey. If all laws just stop tomorrow, not everyone's going to walk around murdering everyone, but those that definitely won't are those that return trolleys.
00:06:28
Speaker 4: I'd still be sorting my recycling. I'd still be returning my trolleys.
00:06:31
Speaker 12: Yes.
00:06:31
Speaker 4: Still be walking on the left.
00:06:33
Speaker 3: The trolley return.
00:06:34
Speaker 4: Not chewing gum in public.
00:06:35
Speaker 3: You get no personal benefit for returning the trolley.
00:06:38
Speaker 2: No.
00:06:38
Speaker 3: And there is no cost to not returning the trolley. It is all about being social. But they end up in parks. Yes. I go for a walk to my local park.
00:06:45
Speaker 13: I love it.
00:06:45
Speaker 4: And there's no supermarket within two k's. And I think, why is there a trolley here?
00:06:51
Speaker 3: Just nominal fee? $ 1 fine?
00:06:52
Speaker 4: Oh, more than that.
00:06:54
Speaker 3: Okay.
00:06:55
Speaker 4: $ 10 fine.
00:06:56
Speaker 3: I'd say $ 50.
00:06:57
Speaker 6: $ 50.
00:06:57
Speaker 3: Return your trolleys, folks. Sam and Theban, who are you fining? Oh, guys.
00:07:01
Speaker 11: I reckon you two guys will be guilty of this. People that talk on their mobile phone. and push shopping trolleys in the supermarket with one hand.
00:07:16
Speaker 3: That's tricky.
00:07:17
Speaker 11: I think if they're not using hands-free, $ 150 fine. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:07:26
Speaker 4: Can we clarify hands-free, Sam? Are you talking about a headphone or are you saying on speaker?
00:07:32
Speaker 11: Speaker mic as long as they've got two hands on the trolley.
00:07:36
Speaker 14: No, not one.
00:07:37
Speaker 4: The next person I wanted to find was someone who speaks on speakerphone in public. So I think you and I are finding each other, Sam.
00:07:47
Speaker 3: It's starting to sound like the kind of thing an Australian government might do. You know, fines on top of fines. Sam, thank you. We're giving you the sticker book this morning, folks. Who are you finding?
00:07:56
Speaker 7: 8223 0000.
00:07:56
Speaker 3: Text us on 0-4-8-0-8-13-95. We're off to a cracking start. We've got a football club. We've got the RBA. We've got people who push trolleys whilst on speakerphone. That's two separate fines, as it turns out, as well, and people that don't return trolleys. Add one to the list for us. 8-2-2-3-0-0-0. Who gets a fine? We don't usually like fining people, but frankly, it's fun that Sportsbet got one. So let's hand out some more.
00:08:23
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
00:08:31
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
00:08:35
Speaker 3: 21 after 6, we're fining people this morning. Not because we're grumpy, because some people deserve it, like Sportsbet. And, you know, football clubs, social sports clubs, fines are a great way of, you know, ironing out antisocial behaviour. You know, and by that I mean not hand-passing to your mate, nor, you know... Just stuffing up in an embarrassing way. Fines can be levied for a positive purpose. We have a very positive purpose this morning. We got tickets to see Country Royalty, this wonderful show. Thanks to Mario Maolo Promotions, you can book tickets right now. But if you love the music of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash and more, January 16 at Her Majesty's Theatre, call in and find someone and you're automatically in the running like Sam and like Peter from Hillbank. Morning, Peter.
00:09:15
Speaker 14: Yes, good morning. How are we?
00:09:17
Speaker 10: Good.
00:09:17
Speaker 3: Very well, Peter. How are you finding?
00:09:19
Speaker 14: I've got a few. All right. Number one is the person that you hold the door open for and they don't say thank you. They don't acknowledge you. They just walk through.
00:09:32
Speaker 3: That's a great one.
00:09:35
Speaker 14: That's my first one. My second one is when you pull back in traffic to let that person in and you make a bit of an effort and you don't get a wave or any acknowledgement.
00:09:49
Speaker 7: Oh yeah.
00:09:50
Speaker 14: Um, that's, that's number two. And my last one was actually, what I had an experience on the road again on Saturday night, heading south on South Road at Torrensville. Being from Hillbank, I don't go down that way very often, and it was three lanes into one. Now, we knew for quite some time that it was going to be three lanes into one. There's times when we're not. And you've got that person or those people that we're doing the right thing in the left-hand lane. We're waiting. We're waiting. The right lane's closed. And everyone's just racing up that right-hand side to push in right at the bottleneck.
00:10:34
Speaker 3: Yeah. I actually think this may seem excessive, but that one, it should not be a fine. It should actually just be life in prison.
00:10:40
Speaker 14: Yeah.
00:10:41
Speaker 4: See, maybe I'm on my own here, but I think that's what that lane is for. I think you're meant to drive to the end of the lane and then merge together at the end of the lane.
00:10:50
Speaker 3: Do you think this is an Adelaide thing?
00:10:52
Speaker 4: Maybe.
00:10:53
Speaker 3: Because you've grown up on the main streets of Sydney.
00:10:55
Speaker 7: Yeah.
00:10:56
Speaker 3: We're merging, but allowing people in is much more customary than it is here.
00:11:03
Speaker 4: And I just never understand why we make the line so long and go so far back and no one's using that lane. the remainder of that lane, because there's still a lane that can be used.
00:11:12
Speaker 3: Because of the social stigma with going in that lane and everyone going, who's this so-and-so?
00:11:16
Speaker 4: I just think, don't we all just keep going until the lane ends and then we come together nicely?
00:11:21
Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah.
00:11:22
Speaker 3: Again, see, you don't need laws, Stacey. You're a wonderful citizen. Shall we do some texts? Our listeners have come up with some very creative ways and people to find.
00:11:32
Speaker 4: There's some very good ones on the text line this morning. um peter in moon to bay thinks the same as peter in hillbank actually people who don't acknowledge you when you let them in traffic 250 bucks yeah that's fair yep um andrew comments on the shopping trolleys the ones you have to put a coin in to get back was the best policy i agree i think that's pretty good um although it's hard you're hard pressed to find a coin these days.
00:11:56
Speaker 3: That said if you the adelaide airport having those the baggage trolleys for free yeah then you travel anywhere else and you've Yeah.
00:12:03
Speaker 4: They should get a fine.
00:12:04
Speaker 3: I feel like I've come from the Soviet Union after living in Adelaide with that. You go to other places and you're like, hang on, I'll swap my card. You're kidding me?
00:12:12
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:12:12
Speaker 3: What is this?
00:12:13
Speaker 4: Yep, I think that's ridiculous. This person says a politician liar fine, $ 1, 000 every time.
00:12:21
Speaker 3: That'd solve state and federal debt, wouldn't it?
00:12:24
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:12:25
Speaker 4: And then Christian's along the same lines. Every time a politician has to take a question on notice, $ 2, 000.
00:12:33
Speaker 3: Answer the question or pay the fine. That's brilliant. Linda agrees with you, Stacey, on lane merging as well. Thank you, Linda. Let's go to Collinswood. Gary, you're in the running to win the country royalty tickets. Who should get a fine?
00:12:46
Speaker 16: Well, I'll go on the inside lane.
00:12:49
Speaker 17: There's a guy on the outside lane.
00:12:52
Speaker 15: And then he cuts you off to hit his brakes to turn left.
00:12:56
Speaker 3: Like, you know what I mean?
00:12:58
Speaker 7: Yes.
00:12:59
Speaker 11: But here's the best part.
00:13:01
Speaker 17: There's no one behind me for like.
00:13:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, yes. So they could have just applied the brakes, got in behind you and not disrupted your day. Gary, that's a fine.
00:13:10
Speaker 9: Excellent.
00:13:11
Speaker 3: Let's go to McGill. Rosa, who are you giving a fine to?
00:13:13
Speaker 18: Hi, every parent.
00:13:16
Speaker 10: Oh, no, not the parents, the children who use the word like so many times in a sentence.
00:13:21
Speaker 6: Please, fine them a dollar every time they use it.
00:13:24
Speaker 9: The parents will be rich and hopefully kids will start speaking properly like.
00:13:30
Speaker 4: Well done.
00:13:31
Speaker 3: Thank you. We'll take some more calls and put some more people in the running to win this because there's a stat coming through. 8223 0000 or 04808 1395 is the text line number. We've got the country royalty tickets. I encourage you to call in. As I mentioned, cold out there. We'll call. 11.4 degrees at the moment. Heading for a top today of 26, so it will warm up. The next few days has got a bit of everything. 31 tomorrow, 28 on Friday with a drizzle. Some proper showers maybe Saturday, 2 to 15 millimetres of rain. So we'll see how much of that comes on Saturday when the temperature drops to 23 as the expected maximum. Then it really drops away. And what rain we don't get Saturday, we will Sunday 1 to 9 on the forecast. 18, the expected top. 18, Monday 18, Tuesday 19. I know there's a theory going around in our work group chat that I've jinxed the weather.
00:14:22
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, there is.
00:14:24
Speaker 3: What did I say the other day?
00:14:26
Speaker 4: You said last week, it's time to put the jumpers away because summer is here. And I said, oh, are we calling that a bit early, Will? And you said, no.
00:14:33
Speaker 3: Well, it looked good at the time. I didn't know it was going to be 18 again. I think it's time to put the jumpers away. I think that's fair. I jinxed it, didn't I? I've stuffed that up royally.
00:14:40
Speaker 4: I was waiting for you to wear a jumper this week and I was going to point it out, but it hasn't happened yet.
00:14:44
Speaker 3: Monday. It looks like possibly the day. All right, let's do it sport. Agostina Mitsubishi's demo clearance is on now. Saved by the Pajero Sport, ASX, Triton and Outlander, Nilesworth and Mawson Lakes. Jase Kemp in the studio with us. Morning, Jase. Yeah, morning to you both.
00:14:55
Speaker 19: How are you going?
00:14:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, we're well.
00:14:56
Speaker 13: What's happening?
00:14:57
Speaker 4: You're in the t-shirt.
00:14:57
Speaker 3: You're in the t-shirt.
00:14:58
Speaker 20: Yeah, we'll start off with some Sixers news. Obviously, Isaac Humphries, the star centre, forced into retirement early, only 28 years of age. Really sad news that he's had a reoccurring knee issue and Yeah, he's decided to hang up the jersey.
00:15:12
Speaker 3: He's had a terrific career. I remember watching him in college and then, of course, he had a couple of stints in the NBA and came here and came within a Bryce Cotton laugh of winning the championship last year. He just inches away. He's such a talented guy, Isaac Humphries. He sang at one of our best of SAs.
00:15:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, he's great. Really talented.
00:15:30
Speaker 3: Don't you think sometimes there are people in sport who, oh, they can sing a bit and get celebrated as though they're Andrea Bocelli when they're okay. He is genuinely got one of the best voices I've ever heard. He was, he was, he's just an extraordinarily talented person. So very sad to lose him for the 36 is, but he's got a lot of life to live.
00:15:47
Speaker 20: He leaves a gaping hole with the sixes because he was such an instrumental piece, uh, of almost winning a championship last season. So yeah, interesting to see who they're going to sign. I think, uh, Mangok, uh, Matthew is the front runner to replace him at the moment. So, um, maybe sixes will announce something today or tomorrow on that front. Um, some trade news. Got a little bit of trade news. Um, turns out that Isaac Keeler, the delisted tool from St. Kilda, looks like he'll probably end up at Alberton is my understanding that Port Adelaide, he's, uh, he'll likely choose Port Adelaide as his new home. So maybe a question for Koshi a bit later on. He was delisted from St.
00:16:26
Speaker 6: Kilda.
00:16:27
Speaker 20: He was originally part of the, uh, the Crows Next Gen Academy. They overlooked him in the draft, went to St. Kilda, hasn't worked out for him. Um, Yeah, so now he wants to come home, and the Crows and Port Adelaide have both had interest in him.
00:16:38
Speaker 3: Are you familiar with the rumour? I don't know if this is true or not, but it's certainly doing the rounds. He's N'Zia Wangadee Miller's best mate.
00:16:46
Speaker 20: Yeah, I think there's some relationships there.
00:16:49
Speaker 7: Right.
00:16:49
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:16:50
Speaker 3: Interesting. Could be an investment in next year's trade period.
00:16:52
Speaker 20: Well, next year, yeah, when Naz potentially, when his contract's up.
00:16:56
Speaker 3: I'd be signing his friends, his mum, his cousins, literally everyone in his orbit.
00:17:01
Speaker 4: Giving everyone a job.
00:17:02
Speaker 3: Exactly.
00:17:02
Speaker 4: Anyone working finance.
00:17:03
Speaker 3: His favourite barista. They're all working at the Adelaide Football Club.
00:17:06
Speaker 20: They could have meetups at the Yochi, was it, where they all caught hanging out together?
00:17:09
Speaker 3: That's right.
00:17:11
Speaker 4: Build a Yochi on the headquarters.
00:17:13
Speaker 3: Build a Yochi at Theberton. That's what I'd do. That's excellent. Well, I mean, it's a good report.
00:17:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, I was going to say.
00:17:20
Speaker 3: Good stuff, Jase. Good on you, mate. Thank you. 21 minutes to 7, we have tickets to give away to Country Royalty, this wonderful country music show featuring Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and more. Jan 16 at Her Majesty's Theatre would be a nice way to start 2027. We're asking you to slap someone with a fine. Who deserves a fine? And we are getting some very creative solutions coming through on the text lines at 4808 1395.
00:18:04
Speaker 4: Peter in Moonta has one for Pembo. Every time he mentions food when discussing something unrelated.
00:18:10
Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you what that'll mean. It means he won't be living in Europe for six months because he'll be broke. I don't know how many Spanish recipes we're going to be learning, folks, but buckle up, all right?
00:18:24
Speaker 4: Get ready. Will's just preparing you now.
00:18:26
Speaker 3: Okay, this is our little group warning beforehand. Be ready.
00:18:31
Speaker 4: You're going to get a detailed analysis of how to make paella.
00:18:34
Speaker 3: It may occasionally come up.
00:18:36
Speaker 21: Oh, correct.
00:18:37
Speaker 4: Because I've probably said it wrong.
00:18:38
Speaker 3: You know what? We might as well get it wrong for now because by week two next year, we'll be getting it right. Rod in Woodcroft, who are you finding?
00:18:47
Speaker 17: I do give a damn about this, guys.
00:18:49
Speaker 11: Yes.
00:18:50
Speaker 17: Yeah, look, I'm finding a few people. The ones driving on the inside lane on roads like Goodwood Road and Undie Road, staying by the curb, and then all of a sudden there's a car in the way. They just pull straight out in front of you with that signaling. I'd definitely hit them with the fine. It's illegal anyway.
00:19:06
Speaker 3: Yep.
00:19:07
Speaker 17: The other one is people that go to service stations and park where there's, you know, they park in the pump section, they get some petrol, then they go in and get a coffee and they stand there for five minutes waiting for their coffee instead of parking their car. But I've also got to agree with a woman earlier about the word so used so much in our language, but what really gets up my nose is footballers and sports people and others get interviewed or are interviewed and then the first word they mention is yeah nah followed by so yeah nah that's a good one Rod followed by so and then like all the way through it I can't believe it but it's getting worse.
00:19:50
Speaker 3: I know. That's a terrific call, Rod. You're well and truly in the running to win the country royalty tickets. Yeah, nah just replaced um in the language, didn't it?
00:19:57
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:19:57
Speaker 3: Does anyone say um anymore? No one says um. I don't know. No one does that. They say yeah, nah.
00:20:03
Speaker 7: Yeah, nah.
00:20:03
Speaker 3: It's replaced it.
00:20:04
Speaker 4: Nah, yeah.
00:20:04
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:20:06
Speaker 3: No, yeah. They mean different things. See, I don't speak that language. I don't understand what that one means. Tim Whetstone, the member for Chafee, texted in a fine.
00:20:16
Speaker 4: He makes a good jam.
00:20:18
Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness. His plum jam's unbelievable. It was at the Australian Hotels Association Awards last night.
00:20:22
Speaker 21: Oh, yeah.
00:20:23
Speaker 3: Where Riverland pubs cleaned up, by the way. The Renmark Hotel, the Loxton Hotel. Did exceptionally well, so he'll be delighted for his constituents. I tell you, our good mates at the Colac won some big, big gongs last night as well.
00:20:38
Speaker 9: I saw that.
00:20:38
Speaker 4: Yes. For best redevelopment.
00:20:39
Speaker 3: Yeah. A whole heap of awards and one of the big ones at the end as well. Tim Whetstone says, drivers on the highway, know this coming down from the Riverland to Adelaide, doing 100, then they speed up when you hit an overtaking lane.
00:20:53
Speaker 7: Oh.
00:20:55
Speaker 3: The worst. There is no more antisocial behaviour on planet Earth. The worst. You haven't gone the speed limit the whole time.
00:21:00
Speaker 4: And now that I'm trying to get in front of you, we're legally allowed.
00:21:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's totally unacceptable. All right, 18 minutes to seven. Let's jump into some of the news of the day now, starting overseas in France, where our next guest, Brianna Goodchild, an Australian journalist and presenter, has been over the course of what has been an extraordinary period there. Protests that seemingly... didn't lose their way, but lost their meaning, that started about conditions in schools, morphed into cost of living, and then just a broader unrest doesn't do it justice. It's a rolling series of vandalism and looting that has led to curfews right around the country. Brianna joins us now. Remarkable time to be in Paris. Thanks for joining us, Brianna.
00:21:52
Speaker 7: Thanks for having me on.
00:21:53
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been quite the time here in Paris. I've been living here for over a year and a half now, and what we saw on Saturday was definitely something different. I've seen my fair few protests in France. They joke around, and the French, they call it their national sport. It's seen as a rite of passage. It's not so unusual to see a protest, but what we saw on Saturday was next level. As my French friends put it to me, they warned me that it was going to be the revolution. And we did sort of see a little bit of that essence coming out with the action that took place.
00:22:26
Speaker 7: As you said, it was.
00:22:28
Speaker 5: Over half a million people coming to the streets. And we'd seen for over three weeks, students taking to the streets to, yes, demand better conditions in schools.
00:22:41
Speaker 7: There's a lack of teachers. There's some schools that are falling apart.
00:22:44
Speaker 5: Some schools that don't have their cleanliness standards up to scratch and The list goes on. But where Saturday changed was it was not only the students now, they call them the jeune, it was also the jeune, and that is the yellow vesters. So these are the group that used to protest back in 2018 when we saw.
00:23:05
Speaker 5: Months on end of these protests that started with the carbon tax in France that saw the price.
00:23:10
Speaker 7: Of fuel go up.
00:23:12
Speaker 5: And how a lot of revolutions start in France is the price of something goes up. In 1789, the French Revolution, it was the price of bread. That's what made them storm the Bastille. And voila, we have the French Revolution. In 2018, it was the price of fuel. And then coming to the cost of living now is kind of how this This revolution is merging where cost of living is sort of impacting conditions in schools. Then the yellow vest is the jumping back in the fight. They're the ones that go a little bit crazier. And then we've also got trade union and trade workers coming to the march as well.
00:23:45
Speaker 7: And there was meant to be a lot of change. Transport strikes.
00:23:50
Speaker 5: We did have a lot of metros closed down, but thankfully the airports did not strike at the same time on Saturday.
00:23:55
Speaker 7: So we did see a lot of action on the streets.
00:23:56
Speaker 5: And even in my street, I had protesters by the thousands coming down that street chanting ACAB or.
00:24:04
Speaker 7: Cops are bastards.
00:24:06
Speaker 5: Um they were peaceful in my street you know just protesting to show that they want change and they're not happy with how the system works but i will even say even in this peaceful side of protest there was something on fire at the end of my street there was smoke and by the end of it i actually think it was tear gas because i had to close up my windows because my eyes and mouth was getting irritated.
00:24:27
Speaker 7: So yeah just a bit of a taste of what it's been like on the.
00:24:31
Speaker 3: Ground so do you feel unsafe walking around brianna.
00:24:36
Speaker 5: It's interesting because, you know, my French friends, they really, like, it was beautiful. They all warned me in advance. So Wednesday I started getting a few friends messaging me saying, hey, listen, so to protest in France you have to give notice. And so the Yellow Vest has posted, okay, we're going to take around all over the country, come to the streets. And so it was my French friends who thought to message me, said, you don't need to be involved in this.
00:24:59
Speaker 7: Like, it's going to get serious. Stay inside.
00:25:01
Speaker 5: So I heeded their warning. You know, I've got visas to worry about and stuff like this. So I stayed inside. I was sort of feeling a little bit okay, you know, at about 7pm and thought, oh, maybe I'm taking it too seriously. And that's when the, you know, the protest reached me.
00:25:18
Speaker 7: So I was lucky I did stay inside because it was quite intense.
00:25:21
Speaker 5: Walking around, it's just, if you get caught in it, it's very, it's all fun and games until it's not. And the crowd control tactics here in France are different to what we have in Australia and some other countries. It is not about de-escalating, it is about confronting. So that's why we see these charges. Police lock crowds in, they kettle. Their technique is to bring out the violence sooner rather than later. So they close you in, they kettle, they throw the tear gas, and then they charge and swing indiscriminately.
00:25:50
Speaker 7: And this is what I was also warned as well.
00:25:52
Speaker 5: They're like, don't go out because if you get caught in this kettling, and I have friends who did get caught in kettling, they will just hit and they will just gas you.
00:26:00
Speaker 7: So did I feel unsafe? You can.
00:26:04
Speaker 5: And it's also, for instance, the next day, normally these protests, it's kind of like riots on the street and then everyone's kind of chill the next day. Sure, there's a bit of, you know, destruction and carnage around, but then you sort of kick on with life. I went to go to Place de la République and right as I was about to start, that's the main area where the protests took place.
00:26:23
Speaker 7: It took place all over Paris, but that was sort of where it started.
00:26:27
Speaker 5: I went to go there and a new set of demonstrations and protests were breaking out and it's actually even continued for.
00:26:34
Speaker 7: The next couple of days.
00:26:35
Speaker 5: So I felt a bit more safer at the start, but now I think this is something that we will see continue for a little longer yet.
00:26:43
Speaker 4: Well thank you so much for that first-hand account and stay safe yeah look after yourself oh.
00:26:51
Speaker 5: Look i'm out here on the streets of paris tonight it's beautiful and we're having a latte and all this so you know it's it's the two moods.
00:26:57
Speaker 3: At once yeah unbelievable uh brown a good child a australian journalist and presenter in paris for this extraordinary period uh there's net there's nothing ever quite like an eyewitness account you read about these things uh but to get a sense of what daytime life is like and how it transitions into being unsafe at night and how a protest can roll through a public area and suddenly be in your street. Can you go outside or not? Oh, hang on, tear gas is coming through my window. That was quite an extraordinary insight into what's going on there.
00:27:27
Speaker 4: And an Australian perspective in regards to the response as well.
00:27:30
Speaker 3: How protests are dealt with.
00:27:31
Speaker 4: We might think, oh, yeah, we've seen protests before, but they don't do it the same all around the world. So really interesting to get that information about how protests are dealt with.
00:27:41
Speaker 3: In paris absolutely it makes you thankful to be in australia uh tell you what else makes you thankful to be in australia a picture that we got from uh we'll send it through no it didn't have a name the picture of the sunrise at wallaroo my goodness that looks like ai could not generate a picture so beautiful uh that is magnificent that sunrise picture it has been a coolish sort of a start to a morning but it is going to warm up simon timkey at the weather bureau joins us morning simon morning will morning stacy so how hot do you think it'll get today.
00:28:10
Speaker 19: Look, we're forecasting 26 degrees, which is a little bit above average for this time of year, so hopefully warm enough for people, but not too hot. It was not too cold overnight, got down to 11 degrees for our minimum at 6.31, and sitting on 11.2 degrees.
00:28:27
Speaker 16: At the moment.
00:28:28
Speaker 19: Looking at the satellite picture, clear skies over the Adelaide Plains, but there is a bit of low cloud around the eastern slopes of the hills. Sitting here, we can just sort of see the tops of the clouds over the hills to the east there, and I think That cloud will gradually clear away. So a bit of cloud around the hills to start off with today, but plenty of sunshine during the day. The winds today, generally southeasterly at the moment, pretty light. Probably see a little bit of sea breeze near the coast during the afternoon. Temperatures, as I said, 26 for the city around the suburbs today, 27 for Elizabeth, 25 for Mount Barker and Glenelg, and 24 degrees, a maximum for no longer today. The next couple of days, it's going to get a little bit warmer for Thursday, partly cloudy day. The wind's turning around a little bit more northerly. A warmer night again, 17 the minimum, and 31 degrees the maximum for Thursday. So a pretty warm day on the way. Friday and Saturday, there's a change approaching, a trough and a cold front. So we'll see a bit of weather develop, I think. It'll probably be dry during the day on Friday, but later in the afternoon or in the evening, I think we'll see some showers. maybe even a thunderstorm around the place. Another warm night, 21 degrees minimum for Friday morning, 28 degrees the maximum for Friday. And then over the weekend, it looks like a showery day for Saturday and a bit cooler with that cold front moving across, 23 degrees the maximum, and still some showers around for Sunday, although more likely in the morning. So a bit of an easing trend on Sunday and a pretty cool day compared with what we've been having lately, just 18 degrees the maximum for Friday. for Sunday there, Will.
00:30:00
Speaker 3: Magnificent stuff, Simon. Thank you, Simon Timkey at the Weather Bureau. Let's head to SAPOL. Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes is on the line. Rebecca, a car's been stolen at Parryfield West.
00:30:10
Speaker 8: Yes, this was nearly as of this morning, just after 2.30am. A man returned to his grey Toyota sedan in the Paddocks Wetlands car park on Maxwell Road at Parryfield West when he was approached by a group of three men. They demanded his car keys and one of the suspects was armed with a baseball bat. The victim was threatened but thankfully not physically injured. He's had to hand over his keys and managed to run to a nearby service station. The offender stole his vehicle and fled the area. We've been looking for this car overnight but not yet found it. It's a grey Toyota sedan, registration XTR099. So if anyone spots it, please give us a call at the police assistance line on 131444 or if you have any further information, you can contact Crimestoppers.
00:30:49
Speaker 4: And Rebecca, a genius has lost his licence in the city.
00:30:53
Speaker 8: Yes, police were at the corner of Pulteney Street and Angus Street in the city at 3.30 this morning for an unrelated tasking when a blue Toyota sedan drove past them at speed and tooted its horn. Police tracked the vehicle using CCTV as it allegedly drove through a red light at the intersection of Greenhill Road before losing sight of it in the back streets of Unley. It will be alleged the Toyota sedan was travelling at more than 90km an hour as it made its way through the city. and patrol searched the area, caught up with the vehicle as it had turned around heading north on Unley Road and pulled it over on Greenhill Road. So this young driver is a 20-year-old Rivoli Park man. He's been reported for driving at speed and manner dangerous to the public, failing to stop at a red light and misuse.
00:31:32
Speaker 3: Of the horn.
00:31:33
Speaker 8: So he's been issued with a 12-month immediate loss of licence and his car's been defected and impounded for 28 days. So I guess he was really drawing attention to himself there.
00:31:43
Speaker 4: Misuse of a horn, not really an offence you hear of being implemented very often.
00:31:48
Speaker 3: I like that. Yeah. I think it might be the first time misuse of a horn has ever been mentioned during the police report. What a dope.
00:31:54
Speaker 21: Perfect.
00:31:55
Speaker 4: Perfect implementation of that rule.
00:31:57
Speaker 7: Yeah.
00:31:59
Speaker 3: Most definitely. That's fantastic.
00:32:00
Speaker 4: What an idiot.
00:32:01
Speaker 3: Good police work. Thank you, Rebecca. Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes from Staple. All right. Let's check traffic. Long live recreation. The all-new RAV4 plug-in hybrid at Jarvis Toyota, Brighton Road, Summoned Park.
00:32:16
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
00:32:24
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
00:32:31
Speaker 3: Three minutes to seven. We're going to talk more about the sports bet fine in depth after seven. Tim Costello will join us, the Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate. We've been using it as a springboard to ask you about who deserves a fine. Not all the sympathy for the gambling companies out there. And Jane in Northfield has a suggestion. Morning, Jane.
00:32:48
Speaker 6: Yes, good morning. I'd like to find people who load their toddlers from the driver's side of their car when they're parked, either on the street or in the shopping centres. The child is... angsting around, they're trying to load them in and everybody else is held up while they're trying to load a kid from the car, from the driver's side of the car. It's so dangerous. It just irks me every time I see it.
00:33:18
Speaker 4: So you think they should be on the passenger side?
00:33:19
Speaker 6: And you're seeing it more and more now. You see it more and more.
00:33:23
Speaker 4: Is that because there's two kids in the car? Maybe there's already a kid on the passenger side?
00:33:26
Speaker 6: Well, it doesn't matter. Sometimes there's two kids. Sometimes there's just the one child. If they're going to put the child in the car seat, do it from the passenger side where the traffic is minimal, there's more care. The parent is almost making you responsible, the other driver, myself, as the one that's responsible for the care of their child.
00:33:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, Jane. That's a fine.
00:33:54
Speaker 9: You're right.
00:33:55
Speaker 3: I think if you've got one, they install it on the passenger side, don't they?
00:33:59
Speaker 21: The passenger side, yeah.
00:34:00
Speaker 3: So it has to be people with multiple kids. Multiple kids. And everyone has in a seat for much longer these days than they used to be, haven't they? It feels like you're in a seat until you're about 25.
00:34:09
Speaker 4: I feel like I should still be in a seat sometime.
00:34:11
Speaker 3: It's unbelievable. The top seven before seven. In honour of the police commissioner signing off and starting as the governor, this is the top seven before seven royalty in music. Okay, so it's sort of a one for the monarchists.
00:34:24
Speaker 4: Okay, and Jess did just say in the break, I'm just putting it out there, this top seven is airtight.
00:34:29
Speaker 3: That might be the second best jinx.
00:34:31
Speaker 13: Airtight.
00:34:32
Speaker 3: All right, number seven.
00:34:33
Speaker 17: Queen of Country, Dolly Parton.
00:34:40
Speaker 3: I see where we're going with this. Queen of Country.
00:34:42
Speaker 4: Only number seven. Okay.
00:34:43
Speaker 3: Okay. What did he say? Airtight. All right. Number six. Prince. So it's obviously not in terms of royal seniority. We've gone from the Queen to Prince. I think that Purple Rain performance is... I didn't even like Prince. That was the best Super Bowl performance I've ever seen. Number five.
00:35:08
Speaker 4: Queen of Soul.
00:35:15
Speaker 3: Queen of Country, Prince and Queen of Soul in the number five position. Let's go to number four.
00:35:20
Speaker 10: Queen.
00:35:29
Speaker 3: That's a turn up for the books, I think, in the musical royalty department. Queen coming in fourth. Number three.
00:35:39
Speaker 4: Number three spotted is, of course, the Queen of Pop.
00:35:41
Speaker 5: Yep.
00:35:41
Speaker 3: We've had one, two, three, four queens in a row. Now we've got a king. The king of pop, Michael Jackson, in the number two spot. Number one. It can only be one. The king of rock and roll. The king takes out our top seven before seven. Royalty in music. Jess described it as airtight. Airtight.
00:36:29
Speaker 4: I'm going to give boys credit for this one. I'm going to act like a footballer and give credit to the boys.
00:36:35
Speaker 3: Credit where credit's due. At the end of the day, we got over the line. 822-300-00 for your feedback or text us on 048-0813-95.
00:36:48
Speaker 1: Knockdown, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
00:36:57
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
00:37:02
Speaker 4: You once thought of me.
00:37:06
Speaker 3: Eight after seven. Good morning to you for joining us for the first time on what is already a sunny Wednesday morning. It started cool, coolest of all the capital cities outside of Hobart this morning, but it is going to warm up 26 as you've just heard in 5AA News. Good hour ahead. Sean Fuster will join us. We'll go around the courts with Sean. David Koch will be on the program before eight. We're going to ask him about internally the concern level about Connor Rosey's hamstring flying to the UK for specialist treatment to deal with a problem that has really nagged one of the brightest young stars in the afl so lots to talk about with koshi before eight o'clock this morning we didn't give away our country royalty tickets before seven no not yet because we've been fining people so maybe if you've got a fine that you'd like to levy inspired by sports bet being fine for offering markets on things they hadn't got permission from the state government to live golf being one of them intriguingly uh we will be talking more about that story shortly so if there's someone else you'd like to find still a bit of time to win those magnificent tickets to go see this show, Country Royalty, in January of next year at Majesty's Theatre. Let's get into some of the news that's going to be big today. And the biggest story in the country right now, of course, is about, first and foremost, the wellbeing of the member for Indi, Helen Haynes. But beyond that, what now of her attacker, Brendan Nugent, whose identity was revealed yesterday. He's been charged with three offences, dangerous driving, causing injury, intentionally causing injury, and a Commonwealth offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police are saying, obviously, the incident was targeted. He will appear in court a little bit later today. So we'll learn a little bit more about that story then. But again, all of our thoughts are with Helen Haynes, of course.
00:38:46
Speaker 4: It's shocking to see how he became sort of... I think the reporting in the Fin Review describes it as being radicalised. He went from environmental activist to... someone who clearly spent too much time online, um, and became radicalized by the content that he was being fed.
00:39:06
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:39:06
Speaker 4: Well, choosing to watch or listen to.
00:39:08
Speaker 3: Yeah. This is how this, this, this, this insidious social media thing works. It feeds the things that, uh, irritate, anger and inflame people the most. And some people just aren't mentally equipped to handle that. Um, and it makes everyone stupid or angry over in the process. Um, Well, I think one of the most extraordinary things that came out yesterday, too, was uh his parents our friends yeah it's a small this is wangaratta this is a small part of um australia northeastern victoria and they they were they got along well they knew each other the families as well so we'll learn a bit more about uh that story over the course of today we got a bit of a follow-up to breaking at eight yesterday if you missed it here's have a listen.
00:39:48
Speaker 4: I understand that the government has made an offer to the other party of $ 150, 000. So to foot.
00:39:56
Speaker 3: That component of the legal bill?
00:39:58
Speaker 4: If the other parties pay $ 150, 000, the government will foot the rest. They have said, we don't want to make you pay that half a million dollars. If you just pay the $ 150, 000 and agree to not launch an appeal.
00:40:13
Speaker 3: We'll call it even. Okay. So that's breaking it out yesterday. What have we learned this morning?
00:40:18
Speaker 4: Well, we heard from the other parties now, the two who launched the legal action against the state government, Edwin Attrell and Jeanette Millerer. Edwin Attrell's statement includes this. The Parklands are worth fighting for.
00:40:36
Speaker 3: That's his whole statement?
00:40:37
Speaker 4: That's his whole statement.
00:40:38
Speaker 3: Does he think he's Michael Jordan? When Michael Jordan returned from retirement, His agency famously issued a statement saying, on behalf of Michael Jordan's agency, we would like to release this statement. And it simply said, I'm back. So maybe he drew inspiration from the goat.
00:40:55
Speaker 4: He then went on Facebook and included more of a rant on social media. So we can quote that.
00:41:00
Speaker 3: Okay. What's the point of releasing a short, sharp statement if you then go on social media?
00:41:04
Speaker 4: If you then go on a rant on social media. So he did say, we will be asking for a meeting with Kai and Ma and the Premier, Peter Malinowskis, to discuss this. And he encourages other people on the Facebook page that has now become very popular, the Possum Park page, to also email the Attorney General and the Premier to tell them, share their concerns. And he also urges people to, number three, never let them get away with this. So we don't know yet if they'll be taking up the offer. Their lawyers have said it's going to have a huge financial impact on them and it would be discouraging for people to exercise their legal rights to protect the environment. We'll review the offer and consider legal arguments. I think a decision's due tomorrow, so I don't think there's too much time to consider it.
00:41:56
Speaker 3: Sorry, Rob at the text line says he's about to learn that money doesn't grow on trees. Thank you, Rob. Scott, as a giant Michael Jordan fan, is a little bit outraged that I've drew any comparison between the Parklands people and the greatest of all time. It was only in terms of the statement brevity, Scott, not in terms of any other form of excellence. The Premier was actually asked about this yesterday.
00:42:19
Speaker 11: Let's be clear about this.
00:42:20
Speaker 10: Mr Attrell has cost the people of South Australia hard-working taxpayers.
00:42:23
Speaker 3: He's cost their money.
00:42:25
Speaker 19: We have an opportunity to recover some of those costs, but we don't want to do it in a way that is punitive towards Mr Attrell himself.
00:42:32
Speaker 3: Phil's observation on the text slide as well, that this is maybe tactically astute from the state government because it's better to get $ 150, 000 out of Attrell and Miller and then ask for the full 500 and have them simply declare bankruptcy and then you get nothing.
00:42:42
Speaker 4: And then you get nothing anyway.
00:42:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't mind that thinking, Phil. That's good. There's some breaking news on the football front this morning. South Australia will make its long, long awaited return to state of origin football on the.
00:42:54
Speaker 21: 27th of February.
00:42:57
Speaker 3: Next year, 27th of February at Optus in Perth, the match will begin 4.40pm Western Standard Time, which, hang on, what time of year is that?
00:43:09
Speaker 4: No, it's still this time zone.
00:43:12
Speaker 3: So it's this time of year. So it'll be a night game here, effectively. So probably a seven o'clock sort of start here. So how good's Australia? What time is it? We don't know.
00:43:23
Speaker 21: The.
00:43:26
Speaker 3: West Australia hosted Victoria for the first time in 27 years, of course. Last year, 58,000 fans were at Optus Stadium. So this marks South Australia's foray. Looking forward to that. I imagine as sceptical as we all and many might be, and I'm excited about this, but I understand why this sort of thing, this is a bit, this is just sort of an exhibition. And is it going to be the same? I reckon as we get closer, it'll feel really fun. And the squad gets picked and you see them train together. It's going to be quite an event ahead of, potentially coming to South Australia, of course, in the future as well.
00:43:57
Speaker 4: Can we do a little test case?
00:43:59
Speaker 3: Yeah. All right.
00:44:00
Speaker 4: I'm looking at flights on Qantas. Here we go. What are they today? And let's see what they are tomorrow.
00:44:07
Speaker 3: Good idea.
00:44:09
Speaker 4: Searching, searching, searching, looking out, flying out on the Friday and flying back on the Sunday. They're not cheap. Maybe Qantas already knew about this. $ 340 to fly out on Friday and 400 or so to fly back on Sunday.
00:44:23
Speaker 3: We'll watch that space with interest. Let's take a fine. Maybe you can find an airline in advance. Mike in O'Sullivan Beach. Good morning.
00:44:31
Speaker 15: I'd like to find people who drive while wearing a hat.
00:44:36
Speaker 3: Please explain, Mike.
00:44:38
Speaker 15: They sit in the wrong lane. They do 40 when it's supposed to be 50.
00:44:44
Speaker 18: You name it, they do it.
00:44:46
Speaker 3: So you think there's a correlation between hat wearing and people driving slowly?
00:44:52
Speaker 22: And the worst one are bowls hats.
00:44:56
Speaker 3: Paddy, our producer, Mike, is very upset. I've never seen him without a hat on. I'm not sure. But then again, I don't know what his average speed is behind the wheel, so I don't know that that.
00:45:04
Speaker 4: He looks like a speeder.
00:45:05
Speaker 3: I don't know that that in and of itself is an argument against what Mike's saying. Mike, you're in the running to win the tickets. It's your personal gripe.
00:45:11
Speaker 4: People who wear hats, well, I thought maybe because it was obstructing their peripheral vision or something.
00:45:16
Speaker 3: Or maybe because you're not going to get burnt, you know, on your forehead when you're behind the wheel. Are you? Probably not. Mike, you're in the running to win the tickets. Listen, we're not here to judge. It's your fine. You can levy whatever you like. 8223 0000. The reason we're talking about it is because Sportsbet have been hit with a $ 325, 000 fine. We'll be chatting with Tim Costello about that on the other side of the break. But first, we're going to check traffic. Thanks to the excellent Jarvis Toyota, Brighton Road, Somerton Park, Long Live Recreation, and the all-new RAV4 plug-in hybrid.
00:45:49
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
00:45:57
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
00:46:02
Speaker 3: 21 minutes after seven. How's this for... A story that's just come out of Victoria in the last 10 minutes. What's the most forgetful thing you've ever done, Stace? You ever done anything forgetful and regrettable? Let me put it this way, people will be more pointed. Have you ever forgotten to pay for petrol after going and filling up your car?
00:46:20
Speaker 4: No.
00:46:20
Speaker 3: Well, Ben Carroll, the Premier of Victoria, has. He's admitted to driving off from a petrol station without paying. He was notified on Tuesday, and there's some conjecture about, who told you? Was it police? Was it the service station? someone else, that he'd driven off the night before. So Monday night, he went and filled up his car. He says in a statement, I was running some errands. I filled up the car with petrol, found out yesterday I forgot to pay. I fixed the bill up straight away. I'm grateful for the team at the Servo and their understanding.
00:46:52
Speaker 18: Weird.
00:46:53
Speaker 3: So that's literally all we know at this point in time. His statement has been released. The Victorian Premier, obviously a bit on his mind, they are four weeks away from a state election. But Have any of our listeners, maybe it's more widespread than I think.
00:47:06
Speaker 4: I do forget things when I'm being a bit airy-fairy and.
00:47:10
Speaker 3: When your mind's on other things.
00:47:12
Speaker 4: There's a lot going on in your brain.
00:47:13
Speaker 3: But have you ever forgotten to pay for petrol?
00:47:15
Speaker 4: No, I haven't done that one.
00:47:16
Speaker 3: Does any of our listeners want to fess up if you've done a carol? 8223 0000 or text us on 048 08 13 95. Let's give away a carol at Smartwatch. So whether you are getting a bit forgetful or... Having a stressful day. Someone's looking out for you. Number six is the number this morning for Kerala. Oh, boy. Is this going to happen?
00:47:37
Speaker 7: 1931.
00:47:37
Speaker 3: We're looking for someone who's 95. Paddy's head is in his hands. He thinks we're going to have to do a re-spin. I tell you what.
00:47:45
Speaker 4: Family member.
00:47:46
Speaker 3: Family member. The person doesn't have to call in themselves. If you've got a family member born in 1931, call in right now. 8223 0055 for the Kerala Smartwatch. 1931. The world's tallest building was erected. Do you know what it was at the time?
00:48:00
Speaker 4: No.
00:48:01
Speaker 3: The Empire State Building in New York went up in 1931. It was the tallest. It came back to being the tallest, I think, after 9-11 in New York. In New York, yeah. Not in the world, obviously. The Care Alert smartwatch. We love Care Alert. They're a family business based right here in SA. Personal alert system, second to none. Call them today to find out if you qualify for a free system through government funding or visit carealert.com.au. We've been having a bit of fun with fines this morning. The genesis of it, though, is their total absence of sympathy for gambling companies who pay a pretty paltry amount of tax, if anything, and in the process do obvious social harm. Sportsbet fined in South Australia $ 325, 000 for offering markets on things they hadn't received express consent to do so, which is my shorthand way of explaining how the law works here. in South Australia is distinct from other places. So live golf, some UFC events, some e-sports games, and some novelty events, which is probably like betting on Survivor or something, were all not sanctioned, and therefore they paid fines individually. It totaled $ 325, 000. Tim Costello from the Alliance for Gambling Reform joins us on 5AA Breakfast. There's no real sympathy here, Tim, for these companies, and that's rightfully so. I guess the only query our listeners have, and Stacey raised this a little bit earlier, is when you're making millions of dollars. off illegal bets, it seems pretty paltry that the fine is just a couple of hundred thousand dollars.
00:49:25
Speaker 12: The fine's just the cost of business for sports bets. They take $ 2 billion a year out of Australia without one shop or one out less, so they have the lowest overheads. Basically... The only cost for them are the gambling ads. And here in Victoria, you probably haven't seen the story, but yesterday a coroner found Sportsbet and some other companies responsible for the suicide death of a 22-year-old because of the gambling inducements. This is a coroner declaring that Sportsbet were totally wrong to actually not inquire properly.
00:50:06
Speaker 11: And.
00:50:08
Speaker 12: the coroner staggered the sports bet, claimed the boy didn't have a gambling problem. He started gambling at 18 and gambled over a million dollars. So look, whether it's here, whether it's with you, it is out of control. Sports bets registered in the Northern Territory where they're paying less than 2% of tax.
00:50:28
Speaker 4: That's why this figure looks ridiculous. During the period for which they were operating in South Australia previously, illegally or in breach of the rules, 17 months from 24 to 25, the revenue they took from the bets was more than almost $ 2. 5 million and the fines, what, $ 300, 000.
00:50:48
Speaker 7: $ 300, 000, three.
00:50:50
Speaker 12: Offences, the maximum of $ 100, 000 each. So look, I'd be calling on your government to actually increase those fines. They can't do much when sports bets licences in the Northern Territory, so that's the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission that's overseeing them. What a farce. A de facto national regulator for gambling in Australia is the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission. But when a bet's placed in South Australia, your government has a say. They should be completely upping those fines.
00:51:27
Speaker 3: Tim, do you have any particular concern about the way in which these companies are morphing into something else? We've seen them get tentacles into... professional sport and on websites and in the coverage of sport. But there's a couple of stories knocking around at the moment, one of which is one of these companies trying to buy pubs to sort of almost turn them into gambling hubs. And the other is Tabcorp's attempt to buy Foxtel, or this is a suggestion in the financial review that they might try to buy Foxtel. And one can only imagine for what purpose that might be. But this is an evolution of this business to something that Is that evolution in and of itself something that particularly concerns you?
00:52:06
Speaker 12: Yeah, it profoundly concerns me. We've been watching it happen because there's so much easy, massive amounts of money from gambling. They are able to take over a whole lot of other separate and legitimate enterprises. I would argue that's what they've done with the AFL. Ten-year-old kids all go on the AFL app and see the odds on a game. Now, when I was a ten-year-old, You never did that. Greyhounds and horse racing existed for gambling. That never worried me because kids weren't interested in it. Now, literally through the vehicle of sports that have taken over, what is our great passionate love of the game? You can't look at the fixture.
00:52:52
Speaker 4: You're right. It's been a bugbear of mine. On the official AFL app, you cannot look at the fixture without seeing the odds. And you can click straight through. You can click on... the odds and make a bet straight away through the official AFL app. It's shocking.
00:53:07
Speaker 12: And the AFL gets a cut of that punt, making about $ 50 million. Every bet from the AFL, they get a cut of the bet. That's why we are in such trouble. Literally such easy money is taking over a whole lot of legitimate businesses, including our beloved Aussie World's.
00:53:29
Speaker 9: Yeah.
00:53:29
Speaker 3: That's shocking. It's an important thing to take note of, Tim. Thank you. Tim Costello, the Alliance for Gambling Reform, chief advocate. At very least, we have some laws in South Australia that make it somewhat more onerous, albeit if it is just a rounding area for the era for these sorts of companies.
00:53:45
Speaker 4: And I just looked up, because you've been saying what they were fined for, the bets that they were fined for, and you've said a couple of times eSports. And I must admit, I just went, I don't know what that is. I've looked it up. Video games.
00:53:58
Speaker 3: Playing video games. You can bet on eSports is big business these days.
00:54:01
Speaker 4: On people playing a video game?
00:54:03
Speaker 3: Yep.
00:54:04
Speaker 9: What?
00:54:05
Speaker 4: So you sit at home and you think this person in their mother's basement might beat this person in Call of Duty or something.
00:54:15
Speaker 3: Absolutely.
00:54:16
Speaker 4: And you can gamble on that.
00:54:17
Speaker 7: Yep. What?
00:54:19
Speaker 3: eSports is a billion-dollar industry around the world now.
00:54:21
Speaker 4: What is wrong with people?
00:54:23
Speaker 3: Because people... You can gamble on anything. I think there's an appetite to gamble. You can gamble on reality TV where, by the way, people know who's won because it's been filmed six months ago. Hey, let's take a quick call from Rebecca, so I don't want to miss this one before we go to news. Rebecca in Fulham. We were just talking about the Victorian Premier and his forgetfulness. He forgot to pay for petrol. Rebecca, have you forgotten to pay for fuel before?
00:54:49
Speaker 10: Yes, I have.
00:54:50
Speaker 6: So slightly embarrassing. I'm a new mum.
00:54:53
Speaker 10: I was about one month old at home. I've popped out to go and get some petrol from my local station. You can, well, actually, I'll backtrack. I've got out the car, put purse under my arm, filled it up.
00:55:06
Speaker 6: Got back in the car, driven home.
00:55:09
Speaker 10: Thinking all is fine, about an hour later, I.
00:55:12
Speaker 9: Have the police at my door asking me if.
00:55:15
Speaker 10: I'd recently just driven to a local petrol station.
00:55:19
Speaker 6: I'm like, yeah, why?
00:55:19
Speaker 10: And they said, is this you? And they showed me the video footage.
00:55:22
Speaker 12: From that petrol station.
00:55:24
Speaker 7: Oh, no.
00:55:24
Speaker 10: And I have literally got back in the car and not paid it.
00:55:28
Speaker 18: And driven off.
00:55:29
Speaker 8: Oh, no.
00:55:29
Speaker 7: Oh, no.
00:55:29
Speaker 3: How long ago was this, Rebecca?
00:55:31
Speaker 4: I can definitely relate to that brain.
00:55:33
Speaker 10: Oh, a good 10 years ago.
00:55:34
Speaker 3: Yeah. I just wonder whether that knock on the door was happening as much these days.
00:55:39
Speaker 2: You didn't get in trouble, did you?
00:55:41
Speaker 6: I was mortified.
00:55:42
Speaker 4: You had to go back and pay?
00:55:43
Speaker 3: So you didn't, there was no fire?
00:55:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, they escorted me back to pay.
00:55:46
Speaker 3: Oh, no.
00:55:46
Speaker 15: Oh, no.
00:55:48
Speaker 10: They knew it was like legit, but it was still, yeah, very embarrassing.
00:55:53
Speaker 3: That is fantastic. Rebecca, thank you. We've got some on the text line as well. Have you ever forgotten to pay at the petrol station or indeed maybe anywhere else? That's the Premier of Victoria has had to make a statement saying, Monday night I went to the petrol station and whoops, I drove off. We're going to take a break. We'll talk more about that and we'll go around the courts with Sean Fuston.
00:56:19
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
00:56:27
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
00:56:31
Speaker 3: 9808, if Ben Carroll, the Victorian Premier, wants to feel better about himself having been caught, we don't know quite how, but he was caught driving off from a petrol station on Monday night without paying. Turns out he has some company here in South Australia because a lot of our listeners have done it. Melanie in Modbury North is among them. Morning, Melanie.
00:56:51
Speaker 6: Good morning.
00:56:52
Speaker 18: It's so embarrassing.
00:56:53
Speaker 21: You have no idea.
00:56:54
Speaker 3: Oh, do tell, Melanie.
00:56:56
Speaker 4: You're not alone.
00:56:57
Speaker 18: Now, mine was a couple of years back. I was on my way to school.
00:57:00
Speaker 7: I'm a teacher.
00:57:02
Speaker 18: And I filled up my car and just moseyed on to school.
00:57:05
Speaker 6: And just as I.
00:57:06
Speaker 18: Pulled into school, I thought, I'm paying for that. So I called the petrol station. and said, I've just done this.
00:57:16
Speaker 9: And they're like, yeah, yeah, we know.
00:57:17
Speaker 18: And so I said, look, I'm going to come back on the way home from school and pay you, absolutely. And when I returned to pay, they said, had I not called them, the police would have come to my school.
00:57:31
Speaker 15: Oh, no.
00:57:32
Speaker 4: Can you imagine?
00:57:33
Speaker 3: You would have been cuffed and taken, marched out of the school.
00:57:37
Speaker 18: Can you imagine?
00:57:39
Speaker 4: Imagine explaining that to all the parents.
00:57:41
Speaker 18: It was done in a restaurant, a pub actually. We were going to a show, a comedian show, and we had dinner and we were sitting waiting for the show to start and my husband said, did we pay? And I'm like, we did not. We rang the hotel and we're like, we just did this.
00:58:07
Speaker 14: What do we do?
00:58:07
Speaker 18: We didn't want to leave the show, obviously. So they said, can you pay over the phone? And we paid over the phone.
00:58:14
Speaker 7: It was so embarrassing.
00:58:15
Speaker 3: Oh, that's fantastic. Well, that's good when both you and your husband forgot.
00:58:18
Speaker 19: Yeah, yeah.
00:58:19
Speaker 3: That's a team effort.
00:58:20
Speaker 4: Share the blame on that one.
00:58:21
Speaker 3: Thank you, Melanie. Keep your stories coming through, folks. 8223 0000. I got takeaway once and forgot to pay. I was chatting with the people that worked there and then someone came over and I chatted with them and someone else came over and Talking and then I just grabbed the food and went, all right, see you guys. And I got in the car and I thought, that was weird. I didn't get a notification saying how much I just paid. And there was a reason for that. I hadn't paid.
00:58:41
Speaker 4: And they called the talkback line the next morning and said.
00:58:44
Speaker 3: Will Goodings? Hey, by the way.
00:58:45
Speaker 2: It's time to go around the courts with Sean Fuster on 5AA Breakfast.
00:58:54
Speaker 3: It's not quite the level of criminality that features in around the courts with Sean Fuster, the Chief Court Reporter of the Attizer and Of course, the host of Just Lawful. Where are you guys at with Just Lawful at the moment, Sean? Good morning to you.
00:59:06
Speaker 16: Well, Will, we're doing an investigative series about people... who work for mass media organisations and don't pay for their takeaway.
00:59:13
Speaker 3: LAUGHTER Terrifying.
00:59:17
Speaker 16: We're wondering whether you'd like to come on and be interviewed.
00:59:19
Speaker 15: Chilling.
00:59:19
Speaker 3: Can you change my voice? Can I do one of those interviews?
00:59:22
Speaker 16: Well, no. We'll tell you we will, and then we'll broadcast it without.
00:59:28
Speaker 5: Excellent.
00:59:29
Speaker 3: Love it.
00:59:29
Speaker 14: All right.
00:59:30
Speaker 3: Where are you taking us in the courtroom today, Sean?
00:59:32
Speaker 16: Well, guys, I want to talk about a couple of cases if you've got the time for it. One of them is slightly more serious and one of them is slightly more perplexing. The serious one, though, is something we've talked about on the show before, and that's the case of Donato Corbo, the mass killer from many years ago who... has been held in mental health security for years now. We talked a few months ago about the fact that he was concerned that he was getting institutionalized inside James Nash House, that he wanted some measure of freedom, and that he wanted particularly.
01:00:06
Speaker 12: To go to the movies.
01:00:08
Speaker 16: And this was something that was of quite genuine concern to those people who survived Corbeau's rampage. You remember when he was affected by paranoid schizophrenia, He actually murdered three people. That's Luke Mombas and his in-laws who were visiting from South Africa. Several other people managed to escape the house with psychological and physical injuries, including the two police officers who responded to the incident. They came to court those survivors and said, we don't want him out there. Now, this is a very vexed question because, of course, Corbo is not guilty of any offense by virtue of his mental illness. At the same time, prosecutors warn that he's done actually nothing while inside to show that he's gained any insight or level of understanding as to what the factors were that made him do what he did. And indeed, they said that he's of great concern to them as well. So the Supreme Court was faced with a real challenge. Do you allow this person back into the community under supervision, or do you insist that they remain in James Nash House and have no freedoms whatsoever?
01:01:16
Speaker 3: I'm sure you've heard it in the courtroom before, Sean, but I've never heard outside that someone in the system has effectively self-identified as fearing that they're becoming institutionalised. Not sort of a forecast about what might happen, but actually the person themselves saying, this is happening to me and that's a reason why I should get special privileges. Has that line of attack been successful in the past?
01:01:40
Speaker 16: It's something that you do see in... cases where there is a mental health issue or cases where there is a youth offender issue. So a lot of juvenile offenders who have to wait extended periods for their trials will say that I'm becoming institutionalized and being put at risk of being exposed to older inmates who know more about crime than I do and basically getting an education in it rather than being dealt with in a prompt way by the system. In Corbo's case, it is this very interesting balance where he says he's becoming institutionalized But the prosecution says, well, you're not actually doing anything to stop that institutionalization yourself in terms of engaging with treatment, engaging with doctors and working with them to better yourself and become a more mentally secure, more stable, more healthy person. In the end, the Supreme Court split the difference. They've said that Corbo can leave James Nash House under very strict supervision, two people with him at all times. but he can only go a three-kilometre radius from the facility, which means that if you go shopping in Gillis Plains Shopping Centre, you may indeed see him walking around with the supervisors, but there's no cinemas in that three-kilometre radius, which means his ultimate goal of going to the movies is going to remain unfulfilled at least until he proves that he can be trusted within this bubble that they've created for him.
01:03:01
Speaker 4: Do they get access to streaming services? Can you not watch a movie on TV in James Nash House?
01:03:08
Speaker 16: That's exactly the question that was asked in court, and the answer was, well, we can, but at the same time, that doesn't expose you to the same level of socialization as sitting in a dark cinema with other people and experiencing a movie together. And while I get that, and while I'm one of the biggest proponents out there for ensuring that those who are found not guilty by reason of mental incompetence do get socialization again, when it's someone like Corbo who is still refusing to admit that he actually has a problem.
01:03:36
Speaker 15: I.
01:03:36
Speaker 16: Don't know that that's exactly the sort of person you want in a dark room with a bunch of civilians.
01:03:41
Speaker 4: It's also not the most social of outings. I wouldn't call sitting in a movie cinema socialisation.
01:03:47
Speaker 21: That's unusual, but anyway.
01:03:49
Speaker 3: We've talked about the concept of institutionalisation, Sean, for want of a better turn of phrase. One thing we've never discussed, I don't think, in Around the Courts history is dermal fillers. But that too is something that you've had to be across for Around the Courts.
01:04:04
Speaker 16: Yeah, look, dermal fillers has become quite the side hustle for me at the moment, and I don't mean in terms of personally administering them, but this very long-running case that's actually taking on quite a tragic bent to it. This is the case between an Adelaide nurse by the name of Bridget Pirro, who says that she lost her career and she suffered facial scarring as a result of a dermal filler called, and I'm sure I'm going to pronounce this incorrectly... Uma Junaid, which came from a UK celebrity cosmetician by the name of Warren Lee Millington. Millington has worked with all the big names according to his social media, Kerry Katonas and your UK daytime soapy TV morning breakfast show type people. She says that another nurse by the name of Jennifer Dennis brought this Uma Junaid into Australia and told her it was safe to use, used it on her, encouraged her to use it with her clients.
01:05:03
Speaker 10: And Ms.
01:05:03
Speaker 16: Pirro says that she suffered a large facial scar as a result of the dermal filler and that she was deregistered as a nurse because Imogen A was not licensed for use in Australia. So she's suing for a million dollars. And this case has been going on for several years.
01:05:20
Speaker 7: Ms.
01:05:20
Speaker 16: Pirro has maintained all the way through that the... I'm sorry, Ms. Dennis has maintained all the way through that Ms. Pirro's allegations are baseless. There's nothing to them. And she says that the lawsuit is becoming vexatious. And recently, Mr. Millington was joined to the lawsuit as well. He's made the same claims. We heard in court just recently that Ms. Dennis is of poor health, that she's 76 years old, and waiting for this matter to go to trial is making her health even worse. So her lawyers, quite unusually, are saying, let's get the trial on now. We want this heard. We want it moved immediately to the front of the list. We want this dealt with so our client can get some kind of resolution and some kind of peace of mind. Whereas Ms. Pirro's side is saying, well, you need to give us your banking records. You need to give us all of the evidence we've been asking you for before this can go anywhere because we can't mount the case against you until you cough up what you have to cough up under the rules of the Supreme Court.
01:06:19
Speaker 3: Fascinating. Sean, thank you. Sean Fuster, the Chief Court Reporter at the Tizer and, of course, the host of Just Lawful, you can hear on our wonderful Nova Entertainment podcasts and wherever you get your podcasts. It's 9 to 8. David Kosh is coming up in just a moment. But first, we're going to check traffic. Long live recreation in the all-new RAV4 plug-in hybrid at Jarvis Toyota Brighton Road, Summoned Park.
01:06:40
Speaker 1: 5AA Breakfast is streaming live right now. To watch, simply head to 5AA on Facebook or YouTube. Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
01:06:56
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
01:07:01
Speaker 3: 5 to 8, Koshi, in a moment. Mark in Summertown's called in, though. Mark, you've seen something out in your travels.
01:07:06
Speaker 17: Oh, indeed.
01:07:07
Speaker 23: On the down track of Greenhill Road and Greenhill, so it's in between the Yarrabee Road runs from Greenhill to Greenhill. It's sort of halfway between the two turn-offs. Someone's collided with the railing and buckled it out into the road. So it's sort of protruding by about four or five feet kind of into the traffic lane. So it's all set up for somebody if they're not watching to joust with it and come off second best, I think. I'll give the police a call once I've hung up and stopped because I don't want to get sick of myself. But, yeah, I thought I'd just buzz it through because I've got you guys on speed dial.
01:07:43
Speaker 3: You're a good man, Mark. Thank you for that. That's good advice for people just to take care on Greenhill Road in the area for that bit of fencing that's buckled out and could cause some dramas.
01:07:51
Speaker 14: And they could never tear us apart.
01:07:55
Speaker 3: David Kosh on 5AA Breakfast. Put Adelaide Football Club chairman and Compare the Market economic director David Kosh joins us on 5AA Breakfast. Koshy, good morning to you.
01:08:06
Speaker 15: Good morning, Tim.
01:08:07
Speaker 4: Koshi, a lot of Port fans are a little bit worried about Connor Rosey heading to the UK to work with, what, an EPL team on his hamstring?
01:08:16
Speaker 22: Yep.
01:08:17
Speaker 15: Stacey, don't fear. Look, I don't think a lot of people realise just how delicate and horrible Connor's hamstring injury was when he started this year. I don't want to get too gruesome about it, But he basically ripped it off the bone and nerve damage and all sorts of things. And they had to put it back with fish hooks, almost like the equivalent of fish hooks, to reattach it.
01:08:52
Speaker 14: I know.
01:08:52
Speaker 15: What some of these players go through in terms of their medical setbacks is just extraordinary. And this is... one that was right out of the box. And there's not much you can do about it except give it time to heal. We all want, and naturally, we all want instant results and instant medical results. But this is the type of injury that's just got to slowly heal itself, let nature heal take its course and the body take its course so it's an injury that is pretty prevalent in EPL in soccer and this has been planned for months for Connor to just go over and do some rehab and make sure it's fine he can run and he doesn't walk with a limp or anything like that but it's just the nerve damage more than the muscle now that's got to take time to heal so We're putting him in the very best hands. He's over for rehab specialist there, which he'll continue into the pre-season. Josh is over there at the same time, and they're going to be visiting some clubs under a leadership program for both of them. So it's a step in the right direction.
01:10:08
Speaker 3: Okay, that's some good news. Hey, Koshi, six days ago, just the day after we last spoke with you, the unemployment figures came out. Unemployment nudged up a tick, but up a tick to the highest point. In the last five years, we had the news yesterday that NAB are cutting 2,500 jobs, 1,500 by the end of the year. Are we starting to see some softening, do you think, in the labour market? And if we are, what does that... That sets up a bit of a conundrum for a Reserve Bank that was sounding pretty hawkish, doesn't it?
01:10:37
Speaker 15: Yep, absolutely. Because remember, Reserve Bank's pillars of responsibility are only two things. Keep inflation between 2% and 3% and keep people in a job. Interestingly, after those unemployment figures came out, but before they came out, there was a 40% chance, financial markets saying 40% chance of an interest rate hike on Melbourne Cup Day. As soon as those figures came out, it dropped down to 10%. So financial markets are really starting to think the Reserve Bank's going to be under pressure to hold here. And the National Australia Bank, Their announcement yesterday, 1,500 staff to be cut, 6% of its workforce. Usually markets will push the share price up after that happens because investment bonds go, oh, well, the costs of the bank are going to be reduced dramatically. But they cut the share price back because what it's indicating is is because the biggest business of all our major banks is home lending, and there's been a dramatic fall in the home loan applications because of the increase in interest rates and the cut in the amount in your borrowing capacity that that brings, while property prices are still pretty high. So analysts are going, wow, these banks who have been the darlings of the share market and to their shareholders, there's some dark clouds in their business themselves. So it's a bit of a warning all around and something the Reserve Bank will have to take seriously on their meeting on Melbourne Cup Day.
01:12:27
Speaker 3: Intriguing. Koshi, great to chat with you, mate. Thanks for your time this morning.
01:12:29
Speaker 15: All right, guys.
01:12:30
Speaker 3: Thank you.
01:12:35
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
01:12:43
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
01:12:47
Speaker 3: 10 after 8, getting some very funny forgetfulness stories coming through on the text line and indeed the open line, 8223 0000. Following the revelation and admission for the Victorian Premier, Ben Carroll on Monday night drove off without paying for his petrol. Someone here says, I was driving with my son who needed diesel, so he filled up. I offered to pay and I asked him if he wanted an iced coffee as well. So I went into the server. I grabbed two iced coffees, went to the counter. The attendant asks, is that all? Yes, I said. I paid and walked out and didn't pay for the diesel. The local police called my son the next day and reminded him it was an offence for drive-offs. So dad quickly went back and paid.
01:13:23
Speaker 4: Imagine being the son. Do you dob your dad in in that instance?
01:13:28
Speaker 3: I think you have to.
01:13:29
Speaker 2: Yeah.
01:13:29
Speaker 3: I think you have to. What a stitch up from dad. That's a great story.
01:13:34
Speaker 4: Imagine getting that call from the cops.
01:13:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, no. No, no. We went, I remember going and dad wouldn't pay. Yeah, dad went inside.
01:13:41
Speaker 4: I got my iced coffee.
01:13:44
Speaker 3: That's a story to tell for the rest of your life. Keep them coming in, 8223 0000 or 04808 1395.
01:13:51
Speaker 4: Also, just a little update for commuters. There's some delays on the Seaford Rail line this morning. There's been an incident at Seacliff and the boom gates are down at the moment, according to South Australia Police. So it's closed to traffic and motorists are advised to avoid the area. So if you're in that area in the car or planning on getting the Seaford line into town this morning... there will be some delays.
01:14:15
Speaker 3: The Police Commissioner Grant Stephens will be joining us after 8.30 this morning. Among other things, I think we'll be spending a bit of time talking to him about the intel that police have regarding MP safety. There's obviously a great deal of concern about it. We'll be chatting with, in fact, before the Police Commissioner, we'll be chatting with a member for Sturt Clutterham, who was doing the kind of democracy that I think is admirable, which is meeting people in public on a street corner and giving you the opportunity to come up and say you know what my local member this that and the other thing needs to be fixed that has to be cancelled because of security advice that she's been given which is just the Helen Haynes story is obviously awful but the ramifications too are just a real dark cloud over democracy in Australia at the moment but the police commission will be able to give us some more on that after 8.30 today so looking forward to that chat let's go breaking at 8.00.
01:15:11
Speaker 4: Well, we've been talking about fines this morning and what fine you would give someone. Our next guest has received a fine and it's from that AI car from the Adelaide City Council that we've been talking about for a couple of weeks now. Dallas Cool is the owner of See Adelaide and Beyond, conducts tours across Adelaide and different regions in South Australia for people just wanting to get out and see our tourist destinations. Dallas, good morning. What happened?
01:15:38
Speaker 17: Where were you when you got the fine?
01:15:39
Speaker 10: Morning, Stacey.
01:15:41
Speaker 22: We've received a number of fines from this AI car and I pay.
01:15:46
Speaker 14: The odd fine.
01:15:46
Speaker 22: But I've got a policy now that if a human wouldn't have given us that fine, then I'm going to push back because it's a step too far, this AI car and the way they're just throwing fines out. We were in a taxi zone for 37 seconds. I've got my buses on set now, so I know exactly where they are at any given time. The passengers were standing there. We pulled up. We picked them up. 37 seconds, we were gone, and we got a fine.
01:16:14
Speaker 14: There were two taxis.
01:16:15
Speaker 22: The photo that the council's given us shows that we've got nowhere to go in the driveway of this hotel, and it's time to push back. I've had enough. So I'll fight this one, and we'll see where it lands.
01:16:29
Speaker 4: Are you not considered– I mean, I know a taxi is a taxi, but surely someone trying to operate tourism services around the CBD and beyond should be able to pull over in a taxi zone to pull up passengers?
01:16:45
Speaker 22: You'd think so. And that's my point.
01:16:48
Speaker 14: It's just frustrating.
01:16:49
Speaker 22: When you're trying to provide a service, if we drove to the next available space, those two passengers would have just gone. They would have been appalled at that sort of customer service. I mean, they were standing there. We pulled up, we picked them up, and we provided the service. They had an awesome day. but council sees it as an opportunity to find a business that spends a lot of time and a lot of money out interstate and overseas promoting Adelaide and South Australia as a destination. And that's the thing that frustrates me so much, Stacey, Will. We just need some help from people like the council. We don't need to be competing against them. And that's what it feels like at the moment. It just feels like that they are a competitor and You know, we've got a lot of money going to them, which really shouldn't be going to them. It should be going to promoting the destination.
01:17:41
Speaker 7: Yeah.
01:17:41
Speaker 4: Well, keep us updated and let us know how the fine goes, how you go with it.
01:17:46
Speaker 12: Will do.
01:17:47
Speaker 4: Thanks, Dallas. This is AI Car. 37 seconds.
01:17:55
Speaker 3: I'm sceptical of businesses' mission statements and, you know, what we stand for and, you know, what do we believe in, but I kind of think the city council, the city needs an admission statement with regard to do we want people coming to the city or not?
01:18:10
Speaker 7: Yeah.
01:18:11
Speaker 3: There needs to be a guiding philosophy that answers that question definitively. And there's not just this sort of hodgepodge approach to law enforcement and speed restrictions and all these other parking costs. What's the guiding philosophy here? What's the big picture plan? These small little things all add up to don't go. Don't come in.
01:18:38
Speaker 4: It's too hard. And don't do business.
01:18:39
Speaker 3: And don't do business.
01:18:40
Speaker 4: Making it so hard for people, family businesses like Dallas's and like the coffee shop on the corner and the shop in Rundle Mall. they're family owned, they're locals just trying to make a living and they're choosing to do so in the city. And when you continually make it hard through increasing rates and lack of parking and a stupid AI car that fines people for pulling over for 37 seconds when they're trying to run a business.
01:19:07
Speaker 3: Dallas is right. If human discretion, you'd like to imagine, would mean that fine doesn't get levied. But when you remove the benefit of the doubt and hand it over to the computer, this is what happens. And I struggle to think in a pure cost-benefit analysis that the ratepayer in the city benefits from that.
01:19:28
Speaker 7: Yeah.
01:19:29
Speaker 3: Okay, you get a fine, but what's the message? The message is less money coming into the city, I think.
01:19:35
Speaker 4: Well, since we've been talking about this AI car, I have had a couple of counsellors reach out to me about their concerns. They are concerned about the car. So I think it's a watch this space in terms of what might happen in future with this stupid car.
01:19:50
Speaker 3: Interesting. Further to something you mentioned just before the break, Stace, we've got a statement from the Department of Infrastructure and Transport. Due to an incident on the Seaford Line, train services are currently not running between Brighton and Noarlunga. Services continue to operate in both directions between Noorlunga and Seaford and Brighton and Adelaide. So it's just that bit in between. Substitute buses are being organised and customer service announcements are being made at impacted stations for passengers. Adelaide Metro thanks passengers for their patience. So a bit of an update there. Some texts coming through. David says Adelaide City Council appalling. Anti-everything. Tourism related into the city. They act like angry small town not wanting visitors.
01:20:29
Speaker 4: And Andrew points out this is happening in Glenelg as well, which I know you and Dave have spoken about in the past. The council cars are driving around the streets with cameras. There's also fixed cameras, so Ubers and private cars are getting done parking on yellow lines for 10 seconds. There's nowhere to pick up and drop people off. The council needs to provide zones for this.
01:20:47
Speaker 3: It's going to become a selling point for other council areas in South Australia. This is the place you can come and be treated like a human, not a robot.
01:20:55
Speaker 19: Yes.
01:20:56
Speaker 4: I don't think they'll do it, though, because there's now a precedent in the city for AI cars and there's a precedent for cameras in Glenelg. So if you can make money, I think it's too tempting for councils.
01:21:06
Speaker 3: We'll get to some more of your techs because there's plenty coming in in just a moment. Let's check traffic. Long live recreation. In the all-new RAV4 plug-in hybrid at Jarvis Toyota, Brighton Road, Summoned Park.
01:21:16
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
01:21:24
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
01:21:29
Speaker 3: 23 minutes after 8, a little bit later today, Helen Haynes' alleged attacker, Brendan Nugent, will appear in court charged with three offences. Those offences are dangerous driving causing injury, intentionally causing injury, and a Commonwealth offence that's called causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police alleging, of course, that this was targeted and not accidental, but that'll all be heard in court today. It has had flow-on effects for MPs right around the country, I think, understandably, reflecting on their own security. You know, we spend a great deal of time being critical of our elected officials. That's our job, and their job is running the country. And I think most people are able to engage in that in an intellectual and mature manner. And it's sad that this scenario has led to us contemplating some of the nicer elements of our democracy being infringed upon, things like MPs attending functions. I know of functions already that have had MPs that were going along, had been invited, had said they were coming and said, I have advice that I shouldn't go now. Our next guest, Claire Clutterham, the MP, the member for Sturt, does these wonderful mobile offices where you can go along and have a chat with your local member. I wonder how many other places on earth you have been able to do that. That has had to be cancelled now again because the advice is that Now, we can't be safe. A few people are texting saying, well, are we inferring too much about the motivation of this person when we don't know things about... Let me just leave it at that. Are we inferring too much about the motivation of this person and the risk of political attacks on our MPs? I think we have done really well as a society making it unacceptable if you drive a forklift worrying about whether you're going to make it home. We've made it unacceptable, and I think we are trying to make it better, although we're still at work to do when it comes to police officers... going out on the beat and feeling safe and being able to come home. MPs too deserve the right to be able to go to their work, which is all listed online.
01:23:28
Speaker 4: You know exactly where they work. A lot of people know where their local MP is.
01:23:31
Speaker 3: You know what their hours are. You know when they're going to the airport. You know when they're coming off.
01:23:35
Speaker 4: Or North Terrace.
01:23:36
Speaker 3: They are totally vulnerable and they are magnets for loons. So I get it. Claire Clutterham, a member for Sturt, joins us on 5AA Breakfast. Claire, good morning to you.
01:23:47
Speaker 9: Good morning, Will and Stacey, and to your listeners, thank you for having me on the program.
01:23:50
Speaker 3: I mean, this is, your mobile office is, I think that's, you know, this is how democracy should work. Obviously, I imagine you're sad to have had to cancel it as well.
01:24:00
Speaker 6: Absolutely.
01:24:01
Speaker 9: And firstly, can I just say, Will and Stacey, to extend my deepest sympathies to Helen and her family and my appreciation to the members of her local community and first responders who came to her aid on Monday and And also just thank members of the community of Sturt who've reached out to me expressing similar sentiments. But you're quite right about the mobile office. So I have undertaken to be as visible and accessible to the community as I possibly can be. I see that as the job of the local MP. And that is a really important part of our democracy. Now, this morning was a difficult decision to postpone. We will reschedule. But I do, you know, community catch-ups, street corners, shopping centre visits, door knocking several times a week when I'm not in Canberra. And I always do it, you know, willingly and without really thinking about what might happen because, you know, we live in Australia. What's happened is just unfathomable. But this morning and what happened to the wonderful member for Indi, Helen Haynes, gave me Sort of, you know, a reason just to pause and reflect on how I go about my business as an MP, particularly as I do it in very public areas. And it's not just me who is affected. So I have always a couple of outstanding young colleagues coming along with me to these events. There are members of the public who are there. At the cafe this morning, there would be other paying customers. So it's not just the MP that is affected by this. It's the wider community involved. And I want to take the time just to reflect on the way I do my business to make sure that I'm, you know, crossing all the T's, dotting all the I's. And I think that that's the right thing to do. You know, and I think about my young colleagues who are in my office working so tirelessly with me and just ask myself, you know, what would I say to their parents if I just sort of plowed on without taking a moment to pause? about whether I'm taking the right steps to protect them as well as myself. So I will get back out there in the community. In fact, I've done other community events this week already since Monday's event. This one is different because it was advertised so widely. Will, you quite rightly pointed out in your intro that these things go on the website. I send details out across my newsletter, which might hit 25,000 inboxes. So this one is a bit different. to a community event, which is sort of more of a close-knit event that's not as widely advertised. So I think a good time just to reflect, pause, consider what I'm doing, whether it's in the best interest of everyone, and then absolutely get back out there. There's no question.
01:26:55
Speaker 4: Have you ever personally felt unsafe in your time in Parliament?
01:27:00
Speaker 9: I mean, we get, I mean, the trolling on social media is, is appalling. It's absolutely reprehensible. We do get abusive phone calls. We've had a couple of threats. And then there have been occasions where I'm out in public doing my community catch-ups and people will walk up to me and scream in my face.
01:27:25
Speaker 6: That's not great.
01:27:26
Speaker 9: That is very disconcerting. And then they walk off and get on with the rest of their day and me and my team are quite shaken by that. But I have to say, in our community, I feel very fortunate to represent such an engaged, empathetic and professional community. And for me, those incidents are rare. But of course, it's those rare ones that really do shake you. And the rare ones, like what we saw on Monday, have devastating consequences for people's lives.
01:27:54
Speaker 3: Absolutely.
01:27:55
Speaker 4: Absolutely.
01:27:56
Speaker 3: Well, Claire, I don't think anyone will begrudge you that decision at the moment. And yeah, we appreciate your time this morning. The member for Sturt, Claire Clutterham. Claire's only been a member for a couple of years, just over a year. I'd be fascinated to hear from our long-serving MPs, Tom Koutsotonis or someone of that ilk, about how does this compare to 25 years ago? What is it saying more broadly about society? And look, you know, people tend to play choose your own adventure on this. It'll be, you know, whether you think it's the management of mental health or you think it's, I mean, I will always raise social media in the context of this because I think it's been weaponized in a way that deliberately harms West society. But there'll be, there's a litany of other reasons that are entirely legitimate and worthy of part of the conversation too. But I'd be really interested to know from those older heads in politics at the moment, how things have changed and how they've seen the nature of aggression and threat change because something's different and something's ugly and about not just Australia, but the world at the moment. And we're certainly not immune from it. The police commissioner has to deal with it. He'll be joining us in just a moment as we continue this conversation.
01:29:08
Speaker 1: Knock down.
01:29:09
Speaker 17: Build two.
01:29:09
Speaker 1: With Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes.
01:29:15
Speaker 4: They do it all for you.
01:29:16
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
01:29:21
Speaker 3: 90 minutes to nine. If you jump on the Facebook and YouTube live stream, you'll see we'll be joined in the studio by a guest who we're just discussing. Maybe a guest that's been in the studio with us on 5AA Breakfast more than any other. The Police Commissioner Grant Stephens. for notably and sadly what will be the final time in the role with us here. Commissioner, good morning to you.
01:29:38
Speaker 21: Yeah, thanks Will, thanks Stacey. Bittersweet, bittersweet.
01:29:41
Speaker 3: You mean the sweet bit you don't have to come in here anymore?
01:29:44
Speaker 13: No, I think the next step for Emma and I is quite exciting. We're genuinely looking forward to taking on a new role but I have enjoyed these conversations. It's been a lot of fun over the years and I will miss that but You move on to different things. And there was going to come a time where I would step away from the role of police commissioner. And, yeah, so this would come to an end at some point anyway. But I'm glad I've got something significant to distract me from the fact that I'm stepping away after 45 years in the job.
01:30:19
Speaker 19: Somewhat.
01:30:21
Speaker 3: Being the Governor of South Australia. We didn't make the connection before until you mentioned, you said that you started when David and I started doing Breakfast.
01:30:28
Speaker 21: That's right.
01:30:28
Speaker 7: 2015.
01:30:28
Speaker 13: Yeah, we both started in these roles in 2015 and it's been a regular part of my calendar since that time.
01:30:36
Speaker 3: Can we ask you, sorry, Stace, because we'd obviously want to reflect and you're coming to the end of an era, but the news of the day is what it is and there's a grimness to it. Yes. And I don't want to be flippant about it, but I think we've spoken about movies with you in the past. You were no Country for Old Men fan. Did you ever like that film?
01:30:58
Speaker 21: That's a dark film.
01:30:59
Speaker 3: It is a dark film. The end of that film, Tommy Lee Jones' character, the old police officer, talks about retiring, moving on. But he talks about the sort of monsters and the bad guys he's been fighting his whole life. He's getting older and slower and they're getting bigger and nastier. Is there a part of you that feels like, Older and slower. Well, that part, maybe. But the nature of political discourse, we're obviously talking about the threats to MPs at the moment, how that's changed. We've got MPs cancelling events now and doing things. Are you leaving at a time where part of you feels as though this is not the same world you came into policing and it's not for the better?
01:31:42
Speaker 21: I think that's a natural thing. Having been in the.
01:31:48
Speaker 13: In the job for 45 years. It is a really different job to what it was when I first joined. The fundamentals are the same. Our responsibilities are the same. A lot of what we deal with is the same, but the emergence of social media has been a massive game changer, and you only have to look at the events we've had at Henley Beach a couple of weeks ago during the school holidays and Glenelg, and then Glenelg.
01:32:11
Speaker 21: Just more recently.
01:32:13
Speaker 13: Those types of mass crowd events occur because of social media. And those types of things, like people fighting at the beach, would have been happening 45 years ago. But now it seems to be more intense because you have so many more people coming along.
01:32:27
Speaker 3: To watch.
01:32:28
Speaker 13: And that creates unrest and a sense of fear from the average person who's down at the beach on a hot day.
01:32:35
Speaker 21: So that never happened before.
01:32:37
Speaker 13: Street gangs, you know, people who think it's okay to carry machetes in the street and um, yeah, illicit drugs, methamphetamine, these things didn't exist. Methamphetamine wasn't a thing when I was a young police officer. And we know that meth particularly, uh, affects, um, the safety of people in the community because of the, the impact it has on the people who are dependent on it. It affects the safety of police officers because they're going up against irrational drug affected people who are okay with resorting to violence. Um, it is a different world and that affects politicians as well. People with a public profile, you know, there are, you know, there's a likelihood that somebody could be fixated against you, Stacey, or you will because you have a public profile. You know, you don't please everybody with some of the commentary that you sort of pursue.
01:33:27
Speaker 3: Oh, we know that. And, yeah.
01:33:30
Speaker 4: Text line in front of us all the time.
01:33:33
Speaker 13: I've heard some fairly animated sort of feed, you know, to and fro between you and your guests or people calling in and, you know. that can result in people becoming fixated and deciding that they're going to act on their anger. And when you have commentary in the community where social media allows people to express views that sort of condone or endorse violence, then it has the potential to make other people think it's okay to act on that. So we are living in a different world, and personal safety is something we should all be thinking about, and we should always think about that. If you have a public profile, then you probably need to pay more attention to that than someone who is relatively anonymous in the community.
01:34:17
Speaker 4: So you finish up at the end of this week after nearly 45 years in SA Police. Is there a moment that sticks out to you, good or bad, that will stay with you?
01:34:30
Speaker 13: I've been asked this question and I've been thinking about it a lot and it's really hard to pinpoint any one thing. There's been times when I've been assaulted. There's been some significant arrests that I've been a part of, murder investigations. But I think one of the things that I do think about quite regularly is when I was given the job of investigating historical child sexual abuse in institutions that provided care and support to young people, Um, that saw the creation of the pedophile task force, which ran for, I think about seven, seven or eight years. And I, I set that up and ran it for the first two years. Um, and some of the results we got, um, I'm, I'm still, uh, really pleased with the fact that we were able to get justice for, uh, adult men who had been assaulted as young children who had basically been written off by the system because there was no way to prosecute these people. So that's, that was something I was, um, really happy to have achieved and I still go back to my first two years as a cadet down at the academy where we used to live in most of the week they're some of the best two years of my life like a 17 year old kid with 30 other people we were under the pump but we had a lot of fun lifelong friendships formed in those two years and I still see people who are no longer in the job and some have been out since 1986 and I still have regular ongoing contact with those people because we have this shared experience that is a really fond memory.
01:36:14
Speaker 21: So, yeah.
01:36:14
Speaker 4: It used to be part of the training to learn ballroom dancing, didn't it?
01:36:17
Speaker 21: Ballroom dancing, etiquette, how to use a knife and fork.
01:36:20
Speaker 3: Really? Yeah. Wow.
01:36:22
Speaker 21: Well, they had us for two years.
01:36:23
Speaker 13: I think they're just waiting for us to mature sufficiently that we could go out and be police officers.
01:36:28
Speaker 4: Well, at 17, that's young.
01:36:30
Speaker 13: Learning to type and getting smacked on the fingers if you were caught looking at your keyboards on the old typewriters.
01:36:35
Speaker 21: So, yeah.
01:36:37
Speaker 3: Feel bad. people on the text line uh oh how would i put this delicately uh while wondering if there's any old scores you'd like to settle you've got a unique um you've got a unique window here between being the outgoing police commissioner and becoming the governor in which you can give uns you can give unsolicited advice to other arms of government uh yeah frustrations about people being let out and re-arresting them or how politicians have dealt with things anyone you've got a live microphone and you're outgoing this is a dangerous combination.
01:37:06
Speaker 21: Well um I think I am somewhat hamstrung by my new role.
01:37:10
Speaker 3: Oh, so there's no window? I thought there might be a window. Okay, there's no window.
01:37:14
Speaker 13: If I was simply retiring and disappearing back into the community, you might have had a different response from me and I would have had a list of things that I'd like to publicly air. But in all seriousness, I'm very happy to move forward. I've struggled with the idea of leaving SAPOL because it has happened really quickly. Um, and I'm still getting my head around that, but, uh, I, I only, I'm only reflecting on the positives and it's not because I'm forcing myself to, it's just, I've had an amazing 45 years. I have, you know, everyone has highs and lows in their job. That's a reality, but so many more highs, um, and so many good people I've had the privilege of working with as a patrol officer, a detective, um, Intel in training, uh, the drug squad. I was just, you know, close friends and such a huge amount of respect for the work that everyone around me does. And, um, I have said to a few people, a few different work groups that I've had a chance to visit that, um, yeah, this is a first in South Australia where a commissioner is about to be appointed as governor of South Australia. Um, that doesn't happen unless South Australia police enjoys an excellent reputation in the community. that the police force is highly respected by its community and the rest of government. I think this is a validation for SAPOL about the work they do in the community, the way they do that work, the way they interact with the community and the reputation we've enjoyed.
01:38:43
Speaker 21: For such a long time.
01:38:44
Speaker 13: So as much as it's my privilege, my honour, to step in as the 37th Governor wouldn't be offered to me if SAPOL wasn't firing on all cylinders.
01:38:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great point. Well, we're going to miss you in the role. We appreciate your candour and the transparency and the chats we've been able to have over the journey. Thank you for being our Supreme Leader during COVID. That was fun.
01:39:05
Speaker 4: And the big question, you've been in the studio a lot of times with Dave and Will, as you pointed out. Some of those times have been filling in for Dave and or Will, if they've been away, or both of them.
01:39:16
Speaker 21: I've never had to fill in for Will.
01:39:18
Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, pressing the button.
01:39:19
Speaker 21: Yeah, no, no, I can't do that.
01:39:20
Speaker 6: No.
01:39:20
Speaker 13: Yeah, it was great fun spending the entire morning with Will, and I think I did it a couple of times with Rennie as well.
01:39:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember you saying afterwards it was the hardest you'd ever worked in your life. I don't remember saying that. No? That's how I remember it.
01:39:34
Speaker 13: By the time you play the ads and the news breaks, it's not a hard three hours for you guys.
01:39:41
Speaker 21: But it was a lot of fun. I've really enjoyed the interactions. It's been fantastic, yeah.
01:39:47
Speaker 3: Well, all the best with the new gig, knocking around with the king and so forth. And, you know, don't forget us peasants.
01:39:54
Speaker 21: No, I'll try not to. And, Stacey, you need to practice your curtsy for the next time we meet.
01:39:59
Speaker 3: Deal.
01:39:59
Speaker 21: I can do that.
01:40:02
Speaker 3: Outgoing police wish to Grant Stephens.
01:40:04
Speaker 21: Thank you.
01:40:04
Speaker 3: Great to be here. All right, we're going to check traffic.
01:40:07
Speaker 1: Knock down, build two with Metro Homes. Sell one and move on. Keep the other as an investment. Metro Homes, they do it all for you.
01:40:16
Speaker 2: Will Goodings with Stacey Lee. This is 5AA Breakfast.
01:40:20
Speaker 3: The Australian Federal Police currently holding a press conference on the Helen Haynes incident in which they've revealed almost one person a week is arrested in relation to threats levelled at MPs in Australia right now, which is quite remarkable. There'll be more on that. after nine o'clock here on 5AA. You can catch the 5AA Interactive Lounge tomorrow afternoon. You need to tune in. This will be great with Leith Forrest and the team from Sportsbed discussing modern imaging in orthopaedics, which is... which is very, very interesting. Now, Stace, we have some tickets to give away.
01:40:50
Speaker 4: Yes, for the country royalty for the person who wants to fine someone.
01:40:56
Speaker 3: Yes, some good fines.
01:40:57
Speaker 4: Peter in Hillbank gets it today. He had a whole list of people, but the one that stuck out to me was he wants to fine people who don't wave when you let them in on the road.
01:41:05
Speaker 3: That's a good one.
01:41:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, I like that.
01:41:06
Speaker 3: $ 250, I think you said, which feels like the going rate. Fuel Watch, it's better to be a member with RAA Road Service. The cheap spots. There's a good one today at the Yugo St Mary's on South Road. That's at $ 2.
01:41:18
Speaker 21: 16. 9.
01:41:18
Speaker 15: Oh.
01:41:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's really reasonable. The Ampole Seaford, that Seaford Road, $ 2.
01:41:24
Speaker 4: 24. 5.
01:41:24
Speaker 3: Otherwise, you're looking for diesel, the Solo Blair Athol, Main North Road, $ 2.
01:41:28
Speaker 9: 69. 5.
01:41:28
Speaker 3: Enjoy your Wednesday, folks. We'll catch you tomorrow morning from 6.00.
01:41:41
Speaker 2: But all I heard was a drum Bouncing off a satellite Yeah, I thought I'd just.
01:41:49
Speaker 23: Pass it through, but I got you guys on the same job This
