► Tell us about you and your podcast
Initially, I started as a vital "in-between" resource, education, and information for the clients in my private coaching practice. After publishing my first book, I traveled the world meeting women in tough places. I needed more training and returned to school for my Master's in Human Services, Marriage and Family Specialization. As my publishing career blossomed, the podcast grew with me. Today, I host remarkable conversations with thought leaders, authors, and luminaries, hoping to bridge the gap between faith and mental health. My community of listeners, or Heartlifters, as we are lovingly called, listens to develop strength in three strategic areas: a healthy sense of self (identity formation), healthy behavior patterns, and healthy communication skills. When a woman is a heart lifting presence in her spheres of influence, every person around her thrives and flourishes.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast in late 2018 for the clients in my private practice, "The Heartlift Practice." It was in conjunction with my second book to educate and empower women to rewrite any negative narratives. My main initiative has always been to help bridge the gap between faith and mental health. At large, church communities have lacked the vital education and information to properly care for the mental and emotional needs of their congregants. I hope to help stimulate resources and initiate luminous conversations about becoming emotionally and mentally healthy.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Currently, I release an episode a week on Wisdom Wednesdays. Producing one episode takes approximately 5-10 hours. Initially, I utilized an editing service, but now I do all the work myself. It is more cost-efficient. I rely on crowdfunding, but am continually considering having show sponsors. Much of the funding came from my private practice and personal resources. Because of my passion for having the show "fill in the gaps" for my weekly clients, I have always considered the show "part of my day job." I recently retired from my private practice, so time will tell with the funding.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I am very willing to consider sponsorship. I am always looking for the right fit.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
My process is simple: I use a Blue Yeti, headphones, and Garageband/iMovie.
My host platform, Buzzsprout, has excellent tools for a minimum fee.
I record each episode, with guest permission, on ZOOM.
I prepare by reviewing media kits and book packages from publishers or guests.
► How do you market your show?
I market my show on Facebook, Instagram, and Substack (@heartliftcentral).
I find most of my listeners come from Apple Podcasts.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The most excellent advice I can give you is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I started my podcast at age 50 with limited technical expertise. I hired a friend to show me the ropes, but it was too complicated. That led me to my simple Blue Yeti, updated MacBook, and, originally, a platform called Resonate Recording, which taught me so much. I just keep it simple. I know I can do more, but I've tried to keep it manageable for my life.
