► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Demetri Kotiadis. I am the managing director of a marketing company called Brand Hause based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. At 21, I decided to leave a full-time marketing position to start my own marketing company. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working with some of the biggest and smallest companies around the world and decided to start a podcast to share what I have learned.
My podcast is Rise and Grind - A Marketing Podcast.
This podcast is all about marketing. The goal is to have a platform to share relevant trends and innovations from my perspective while also sharing marketing topics and productivity hacks that me and my team are passionate about.
Our listeners are fellow marketers, small business owners, sales people, and anyone looking to grow their business by marketing.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I have always been fond of podcasts especially while I travel. I find podcasts to be a way to relax while still learning something. After enjoying countless podcasts over the last few years, I felt like it was time for me to give back to others and share some of my insights.
My goal and motivation for starting a podcast was to demystify the marketing world and help break things down into actionable items. All too often, people and businesses get swindled into certain activities because their marketing vendor told them it was necessary but they never really see any tangible benefit (aside from seeing their bank balances go down with each invoice). Knowledge is power. If I can help even one person better understand marketing and avoid some of the most common pitfalls, I would be extremely happy.
Technically, our podcast launched on May 3rd, 2020. We have two types of podcast episodes that we produce. A portion of our episodes are content adapted from our blog. The remaining portion are live episodes where me and my team (or a guest) break down a marketing topic or trend.
It took us around 4 months to release our first episode. We wanted to ensure that once we went live, we would have a plethora of engaging content to create something that was truly powerful and worthy of someone's time.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Currently, it is entirely funded by myself. This is a passion of mine and sharing that with others is extremely gratifying.
Luckily, my day job heavily coincides with the podcast (and helps fuel the trends and topics of the episodes).
On average, we probably devote a minimum of 10 hours per week producing the podcast and another 10 hours for marketing, strategy, etc.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Up until now, we have been entirely self funded without any sponsorships or revenue sharing. I would hate to say we would never pursue any of these avenues (if we found the perfect fit) but for now, we are happy with out current structure.
Podcasting is very therapeutic. For me, it is like a business therapy session. We are able to fixate on a topic and really dive deep into the root of it. I have also been fortunate to form some digital relationships from motivated listeners who wanted to further discuss a topic they were interested in or ask me a question related to their specific situation.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
For the most part, we try to use Shure SM7B's for any of our live episodes. We typically send our remote guests a Blue Yeti USB microphone on loan beforehand so their sound quality is up to snuff. We use a variety of software to capture remote interviews, mix our podcasts, and more.
We normally select our guests based upon our contacts in the industry who we think do a really good job at what they do. We try to find people who are leaders in their field and are truly able to share something unique and powerful on a topic.
Preparation for an episode varies... For some, we have a very clear direction we would like to head and we try to follow some basic bullet-points to get us there. For other episodes, it may be more off the cuff and give us a chance to truly explore a topic without any particular basis.
For live episodes, we do a combination of in person interviews as well as remote interviews (depending on our interviewees location).
► How do you market your show?
We have our show on most major podcast platforms (iTunes, Google Podcasts, Spotify, TuneIn, Podchaser, and Stitcher). To help promote our podcast, we use a mix of social media networks, email campaigns, ads, and other to try to reach interested listeners.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
A podcast is only fun if you make it fun. Talking into a microphone by yourself in a closet for 60 minutes isn't the most enjoyable thing to do but if you find it fun, it doesn't matter. The moment it stops being fun, I feel like it loses a genuine component of what makes it great. Coupled with finding the fun in a podcast, I would really push aspiring podcasters to try to hone in on their "why". Why make a podcast? Why should someone listen to your podcast? Why do you have something to say? Why do you need to be heard? Etc. If you understand your "why", you can then tailor your content to your target audience and make something really engaging.
