The Candy Matson radio series, officially titled Candy Matson, YUkon 2-8209, was a distinctive and influential detective drama that aired on NBC West Coast from June 29, 1949, to May 20, 1951.Key Aspects of the Series:

• Female Private Investigator: At its heart was Candy Matson, a sassy, intelligent, and independent female private investigator based in her penthouse on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. This was a groundbreaking role for its time, as most detective shows featured male leads or female characters as sidekicks. Candy was portrayed as capable and fearless, often solving cases before her police contacts.
• Creator and Star: The series was a family affair, created, written, produced, and directed by Monty Masters. He originally envisioned the show with a male lead, but his mother-in-law convinced him to change it to a female detective, leading to his wife, Natalie Parks (later Natalie Masters), taking on the title role. Natalie Masters' real-life personality was said to be a perfect fit for the character.
• Cast:Candy Matson: Natalie Parks (Natalie Masters)
• Lt. Ray Mallard: Henry Leff (Candy's understated police detective love interest)
• Rembrandt Watson: Jack Thomas (Candy's bohemian and often humorous assistant/best friend. Notably, his character was subtly gay-coded, a rare and progressive element for old-time radio.)
• Announcer: Dudley Manlove
• Minor roles: Helen Kleeb, John Grober, Mary Milford, and Hal Burdick were frequently heard.
• San Francisco Setting: The show heavily utilized its San Francisco setting, incorporating actual locations like Telegraph Hill, Chinatown, and Fort Ord into the plots. This added a layer of authenticity and local flavor that resonated with West Coast audiences.
• Unique Characteristics:Strong Female Lead: Candy was not squeamish, used her wit more often than her pistol, and was unintimidated by threats. She was self-sufficient and financially independent, often attributing her detective work to maintaining her luxurious lifestyle.
• Progressive for its time: Beyond the strong female lead, the veiled gay character of Rembrandt Watson was a remarkable and positive portrayal for the era, especially compared to other limited and often negative representations of queer characters in old-time radio.
• Humor and wit: While dealing with serious crimes, the show balanced its plots with witty banter and clever dialogue, particularly from Candy.
• Popularity: Despite being a regional show that never secured a national sponsor, Candy Matson was immensely popular on the West Coast, often being the top-rated radio program in San Francisco. A famous incident involved over 800 calls received at the station after an episode ended with Candy in a plane crash, highlighting the audience's engagement.
• Legacy: Unfortunately, only about 14 of the estimated 92 episodes have survived, along with the original audition and a later revival audition. Despite this, Candy Matson is remembered by old-time radio enthusiasts as a pioneering series and one of the finest examples of the "female private eye" genre. Its influence can be seen in later portrayals of strong, independent female characters in media. The series concluded with a twist, as Ray finally proposed to Candy, and she accepted, retiring from the detective business.
