Melissa helps business owners get away from their 9-5 corporate jobs by owning a photography franchise. Spoiled Rotten helps franchisee go into pre schools and take beautifully lit, beautifully posed timeless photographs of 3 & 4 year olds that parents can be very proud of. Melissa has a background in custom photography as well as being the Army and industrial engineering. Her training background meant that she was perfect to help franchisees on their journey from a 9-5 job to being a business owner. Melissa puts new franchisees through 2 weeks of training on the basics of photography before they do the final franchise training. Andre Wadsworth is a former NFL player, founder of Impact Church and Area Developer of Creamistry, a liquid-nitrogen instant ice-cream concept. He’s based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Andre started out playing football and studying business at Florida State University in Tallahassee. He graduated with a masters in Sports Management then was drafted to play for the Arizona Cardinals. Andre and I share a mutual background - growing up around cars! While playing football he bought 3 car dealerships and grew this to a portfolio of 6 dealerships over the 10 years. In 2010 he sold the dealerships, thinking about working in the non-profit sector, but he had always kept an eye on franchsinig On a trip to Newport Beach, California, Andre and his wife and kids discovered a new concept called Creamistry where they were making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. He noticed there were lines around the block, the product was great, and his wife and kids loved it - this was an exciting product! The production of the ice cream, the experience, was part of the appeal. Andre kept in touch with the owner, Jae Yim?, and offered to become an area developer for the South East market.   More show notes are available at FranchiseeConnect.com/060 What are the biggest secrets of the most successful franchisees? Matt Miller is a former air force pilot (T-38s and C-5s for the avgeeks like me out there) and former advertising executive who is Founder and CEO of School Spirit Vending. He started a passive ‘on the side’ business to help schools raise money through vending machines and grew it into an empire with 110 machines himself and over 100 franchisees. Matt started the business with a used gumball machine he bought off eBay. Now he helps franchisees place vending machines in schools that dispense school-branded stickers and mascot stickers. They help raise school spirit and generate income for the school as well. On 25 October 2016 it will be 9 years since matt placed that first machine in his first school. Now Matt’s in 36 states in the US and is expanding into Canada early next year.     Typically School Spirit Vending franchisees have 20-30 machines per franchisee. Matt believes in a culture of not ‘pushing’ people but letting them go at their own pace. Franchisees typically put in less than two days a month to service and stock their machines.   More show notes are available at FranchiseeConnect.com/059 **NEW AND UPDATED** What are the biggest secrets of the most successful franchisees? How to save $250,000 by working with a franchise lawyer Mike Reagan is a franchise attorney with Warshawsky Seltzer, a boutique law firm specializing in franchising. Mike started in franchising working in his family’s Fast Signs franchise. This experience gave him a taste for franchising and inspired him to become a lawyer who specialized in the franchising model. Mike’s time with Kahala Group started when they were only 60 units and over the next 17 years he helped the brand grow to owning 19 quick service restaurant brands with over 3200 locations! Working with the brand as they went through many acquisitions, Mike looked at 19-20 businesses for each acquisition Kahala made, meaning he has looked at literally thousands of franchise businesses and he’s been able to distill some ‘best practices’ out of all that experience. Mike imparted two quarter of a million dollar pieces of advice into our interview today: “If you’re going to sign a lease, put the lease in a holding company with a personal guarantee that has an exit clause - if you exit the business you’re only liable for 6-12 months rent.” “If you’re signing a 10-year agreement with a franchisor, which most are, add an exit clause where if you exit the business, you pay X.” Thank you Mike!!
