Hello everyone and welcome to Episode 2 of Catholic with a Mic, this episode I am going to talk about Mary and her being our co-mediatrix. Todays topic: Mary’s Mediatrix Before we start I just want to remind everyone that I’m am not a theologian, I am not an official of the Catholic Church. I am a devout Catholic learning his faith and sharing as best as I can. The Magisterium and Scripture are the authority of the Catholic Church, charged to teach and guide the faithful into truth. I fully submit myself to the teachings of the Catholic Church wholly and fully. I will do my best to present full Orthodoxy and when there is a conflict between what I say and what the Church teaches, than what is said by the Catholic Church is to be taken as correct and my words are incorrect. So let’s begin. What does Medatirx mean? Mediatrix is the feminine word for mediator and since 1 Tim 2:5 is used to criticize Mary as being co-mediator let’s start there. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a human being, Christ Jesus, Let’s look at what “Mediator” means. In 1 tim 2:5 the greek word used to translate “mediator between” is Mesites: go-between, a reconciler (intercessor), mediator So a Mediatrix would be a female that is acting as a go-between, an intercessor, and mediator. Before moving on let me state that as a Catholic if fully agree with 1 Tim 2:5. Jesus is the only one mediator between man and God. All through scripture we see Jesus empowering people, and his Church with his authority. For example at the end of John we see Jesus breathing out the Holy Spirit onto the Apostles and then telling them: John 20:23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” http://www.ewtn.com/v/bible/search.asp?abbr=John&ch=20&bv1=19&ev1=23 As a Catholic I believe that the priest under Jesus authority and power can forgive my sins. It all points to Jesus and not the priest. The priest power and authority to forgive sins comes from Jesus and Jesus alone. As Mediatrix Mary is “mediating” in the same way. She’s a go-between, an intercessor between her children on earth and her Son Jesus Christ. Again turning to scripture we see this in John’s gospel in the story The wedding at cana. John 2:3-5 3 When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/__PXA.HTM They ran out of win and she turns to Jesus and says “They have no wine”, she continues this ministry to this very day going to Jesus and saying “My child George is requesting xyz”. The difference now is Jesus does not respond with “My hour has not yet come”. He responds in whatever way we need him to respond in. Let’s go back to 1 tim, and look at the preceding verses. 1 1 First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, 2 for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. 3 This is good and pleasing to God our savior, 4 who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/__P110.HTM The very first thing he does is ask for “supplications, prayers, petitions and thanksgiving” to be offered for everyone. in·ter·ces·sion ˌin(t)ərˈseSHən/ noun the action of intervening on behalf of another. “through the intercession of friends, I was able to obtain her a sinecure” synonyms: mediation, intermediation, arbitration, conciliation, negotiation; More the action of saying a prayer on behalf of another person. “prayers of intercession” So Paul himself is acting in a mediating way, asking for prayers or intercession. Hebrews 7:24-25 tells us that Jesus is our intercessor: 24 but he, because he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away. 25 17 Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them. http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/__P11M.HTM So Paul in verse 1 is asking for the faithful to pray of those in authority (intercessory prayer) and in verse 3 he tells us: This is good and pleasing to God our savior. And in verse 7 he stamps all this with his apostolic authority: 7 For this I was appointed preacher and apostle (I am speaking the truth, I am not lying), teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Verse one he asks for prayers of the faithful for those in secular authority (intercession) he then tells us that Jesus is the only mediator between man and God. So all this seems to contradict itself right? How can Paul act as a mediator asking for intercessions if Jesus is our intercessor, how can Paul act as a mediator or go-between the faithful and Jesus by asking for “ supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, (2) for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.”. Simply, Jesus chooses to use his Body (the faithful) to turn to each other in love. This is found in Paul’s letters to the Ephesians and Corinthians: 22 And he(God) put all things beneath his(Jesus) feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, 11 the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/__P108.HTM So as members of the Body of Christ, Christ as our head and we the faithful make up the body and we are all part of one and therefor we can not act separately from each other. Paul lays out the Body of Christ beautifully in 1 Corinthians 1 1 Now in regard to spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware. 2 2 You know how, when you were pagans, you were constantly attracted and led away to mute idols. 3 Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by the spirit of God says, “Jesus be accursed.” And no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the holy Spirit. 4 3 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 5 there are different forms of service but the same Lord; 6 there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; 10 to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes. 12 4 As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. 14 Now the body is not a single part, but many. 15 If a foot should say, “Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the body,” it does not for this reason belong any less to the body. 16 Or if an ear should say, “Because I am not an eye I do not belong to the body,” it does not for this reason belong any less to the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I do not need you.” 22 Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary, 23 and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety, 24 whereas our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, 25 so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another. 26 If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. 27 5 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. 28 Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; 6 second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way. http://www.usccb.org/bible/1corinthians/12 I want to focus in on verses 21-27 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I do not need you.” 22 Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary, 23 and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety, 24 whereas our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, 25 so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another. 26 If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. 27 5 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. In this passage we see that no one part can say it doesn’t need the other (21) and then Paul goes on to say that some parts seem weaker (22) some viewed as being less honourable and less presentable (23). The three verses that Paul points out the weaknesses he also says they build up the Body and in verse 24 he tells us that God constructed the body “as to give greater honour to a part that is without it”. This brings us to verse 26 “If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honoured, all the parts share its joy” So there is no contradiction with Paul acting as mediator/intercessor even though Jesus is our one mediator between God and man. As members of the Body of Christ we all become co-mediators to each other as we build up the weaker parts, or bring honour the parts that seem less honourable. For “Now we (you) are Christ’s Body and individual parts of it” So let’s bring this back to our Mother Mary. We see that as members of the Body of Christ we can mediate/intercede for each other but why the title of Co-Mediatrix for Mary. Well for it was through Mary that we received Jesus. Through Mary’s “Yes” and cooperation with God, she brought the source of all grace to the whole world in her Son Jesus. To summarize, Mary is co-mediatrix in the same way we are all co-mediators. We are all called to build up one another and to pray for one another. And that’s exactly what our Mother does for us. She loves us and prays for us, through the grace of God she hear’s our prayers and takes them to her Son. Like the wedding of Cana…. They have no wine, Our Mother goes to her Son and says George has no wine and Jesus goes to the Father and says to Him, Father your child George has no wine and the Father will give me exactly what I need and not what I want. For what I want may not be what I need and only our Heavenly Father knows what we each truly need. I would love to hear from you, hear your thoughts and comments on the subject. I started Catholic with a mic a long time ago and only got one episode out and never followed up. The podcast was dropped by Itunes because the podcast was not active. Well its time to get back up and running. So lets start with the original episode and I’ll work on content and get this podcast going.

Hello my name is George, I was born into a Catholic family, baptized and raised Catholic. I spent the first 20+ years of my life as a cultural Catholic. Catholic by title and not by practice. I was divorced at an early age and turned to my faith. I always believed in God, believed in the doctrines of the Church. I just was not living them out in my life. When my wife of 4 yrs took our daughters and left I was crushed. I'm not going to say I was all innocent and she was all to blame. Takes two to get married and it takes two to bring one to an end. So when I heard the words come from her mouth "I want a divorce" I thought I had died. I hung up the phone and while lying on the couch I looked up at the ceiling and sad "God, my dad is always telling me to offer myself up to you. To offer up my struggles to you. Well, I ain't much but here I am. I can't do this on my own. I need help" A sense of comfort came over me. For the next two weeks I felt calm and like there was nothing that I couldn't handle. That's when I became a practicing Catholic. I had a long long journey ahead of me and I still do today. But today I can say I know Jesus and have a relationship with him, God and the Holy Spirit. I yurn for Mass, I yurn for the Conffesional and most of all I yurn for the most Holy Euchurist. I yurn to be able to hold Jesus Christ in my hands. Every week I take My God my Lord into my hands and than eat his flesh and drink his blood. Like it says in John 6. Catholic Study Bible John 6:51 51 I am the living bread * which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." So who are we (meaning the network), and what are we all about, well so far it's just me. But: Mission statement: My Goal with this podcast is to burst some of the myths associated with the Catholic faith. Engage non-Catholics in dialogue and fellowship. This episode I want to touch on the name of the network and how that relates to Catholics. Are Catholics Bible Christians? First thing we have to ask is where did the bible come from? Third Council of Carthage (A.D. 397). It was also determined that besides the Canonical Scriptures nothing be read in the Church under the title of divine Scriptures. The Canonical Scriptures are these: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua the son of Nun, Judges, Ruth, four books of Kings (1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 kings, 2 kings), two books of Paraleipomena (1 chronicles, 2 chronicle), Job, the Psalter, five books of Solomon [Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom, and a portion of the Psalms], the books of the twelve prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezechiel, Daniel, Tobit, Judith, Esther, two books of Esdras, two books of the Maccabees. Of the New Testament: four books of the Gospels, one book of the Acts of the Apostles, thirteen Epistles of the Apostle Paul, one epistle of the same [writer] to the Hebrews, two Epistles of the Apostle Peter, three of John, one of James, one of Jude, one book of the Apocalypse of John. Let this be made known also to our brother and fellow-priest Boniface, or to other bishops of those parts, for the purpose of confirming that Canon. because we have received from our fathers that those books must be read in the Church. Let it also be allowed that the Passions of Martyrs be read when their festivals are kept. Catholic answers has a good tract on the Old Testament canon Old Testament Canon Now Who is boniface: Pope Boniface Boniface was a prominent Bishop in the Latin Church and eventually became Pope. This shows us two things, that the regional Church's did not view themselves as independent from each other and that Rome held a significant position. So the canon of scripture comes from the Catholic Church. That seems brazen to say that the Canon comes from the Roman Catholic Church..... But wait I didn't say that!
