The North American Aviation XB-70A Valkyrie was a long-range, Mach 3, high altitude strategic bomber. The program was cancelled before the first aircraft was even built, but two airframes were completed and one remains on display at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The Valkyrie pushed aircraft and aeronautic design to the limits, using a brazed stainless-steel honeycomb skin, giant wing tips that could droop down 65 degrees and make use of a concept known as ‘compression lift’ where the aircraft was designed to ride above the bow of its own supersonic shockwave.
