Those Conspicuous Millennials

By Terrance Blount

About this podcast   English    United States

Being a millennial typically means there's an association and focus on my generation that omits the ideas and thoughts of others. My goal is to bring a voice not only from my generation's point of view, but from other generations and cultures that drive us forward as a people. We accomplish more together, even in disagreement, than divided in ignorance.
My vision for the podcast is to provide critical thinking towards the way we as a society are affected by technology while a few of us influence the way technology moves forward. It's a symbiotic relationship and I find either people gravitate to it or reject it.

It rings true today more than ever considering how much content we are sharing about our personal lives everyday. There used to be a time not so long ago that one could go a whole day without seeing/interacting with a photo. Text and voice were our main ways to communicate. Fast forward today and it’s a whole other experience. We scroll through Facebook first encountering photos and videos. Instagram (more so popular within my group) is all about photos and as one scrolls, the photo dictates likely what one reads. We are visual creatures and it is blaring obvious social networking companies realize this and execute accordingly. A photo generates a feeling and a response. There are algorithms that dictate what one views. What could possibly go wrong, right?! Well… about that. It’s no secret Facebook in particular is receiving a LOT of heat for allowing not only the social network but it’s consumers as well to be straight up gamed. Played. Fooled. All by understanding us better than we know ourselves. With that comes a new threat that will be unique to us as a social experience that none of our ancestors have ever faced. We are getting to a point where even our eyes cannot be trusted. Let alone our ears and other senses. Think how the Chameleon blends in and it fools the senses to think it is a part of something it’s around. Nature does it well and now we humans are doing it digitally. Think of these ridiculous pornography videos that inserts celebrities heads on other actors bodies. Impressive yet very distributing. And no, I don’t subscribe to those; get your minds right! In all seriousness, let’s play this out for a moment. Back to social media. People are distrusting of the media and yet one of the ways we vet information is typically going to the sources themselves. Did the POTUS say what I thought he said?! Let me take look. Queue viewing material, absorbing what happened, then making a decision on my thoughts. Pretty straight forward although this now may not be the case in the near future. First, let me address the term. Instead of A.I., we should refer to this as ML, which is known as Machine Learning. We can fairly easily train for facial recognition and do displacements/replacements. The reason for this concern should be obvious but just in case, let’s cover a few scenarios. Your face could appear a place it never has been. On a body that isn’t yours. There are many situations where that’s not ok. We typically view a photo as proof these days. To your friends. Inside the courtroom. And all of that comes into question if we cannot truly rely on photos as a form of reliable data. Voice is another we are synthesizing currently, but that we can leave for another day. I feel it’s prudent to be mindful of the ways technology is being used. Adobe, which is known for its software in photography, appears to be taking a responsible take on what it can do to solve fake photos. For example, their ML looks for splicing, where another photo is integrated. Then there is cloning meaning multiple objects that have been copied and pasted. Finally, there’s removal which can be used to dissect certain portions of the photo for removal. Personally I am VERY optimistic about the future. However, I am cautious and I am very perceptive that many individuals are skeptical (and rightfully so) of the “truth.” What I do not want to see is this blanket of trusting no one, no thing, as this can get so very far out of our hands. That would be chaotic and create a world of disconnected people. It’s too far to tell and difficult to see a forecast. I am just thankfully that we see enough through the mist to know we need to take precaution and be transparent. att-gets-judge-approval-for-time-warner-merger-2018-06-13-01-51-0.m4a Well… it’s official! The two have been dating for some time and now have become engaged! At least as long as Dad Mr. Justice Department doesn’t decided to object last minute that is. The Justice Department has until June 21st to squash the due to an appeal process that could stifle the situation. The Judge already vocally asked that they not seeing it would be a low blow. Very dicey situation, however, remember most of what we feel one way or another is speculation. In the meantime, take a listen and please share with me your thoughts on the matter. Do you think this merger would benefit companies and customers? Or do you feel AT&T will offer no real value and directly slow down profession within the industry?

net-neutrality-2018-06-11-23-51-54.m4a Today on June 11th marked the end of an era with Net Neutrality. I wanted to share some thoughts and insights as to why I see this as a setback and personally not buying into the innovation narrative. Take a listen, become knowledge on the topic, and please share with me your thoughts on the matter. I’m not one to fear monger although in this case the past hasn’t been customer friendly to say the least. Please share your feedback as always and I hope you enjoy the show.

macos-mojave.m4a My last thoughts within the series turns my attention to macOS Mojave and what this means for creatives along with everyday users. I originally thought this would be quick and dirty, only to find there’s much to be discovered here. Apple makes it clear their indeed is within the Mac platform. There have been many rumors of integration and complete merging of their platforms. This couldn’t be further from their vision. From new features like dark mode to security and privacy that indirectly calls out companies such as Facebook, they are on a journey that ultimately will impact us all. Join me here with Those Conspicuous Millennials, and as always, share your thoughts!

tvos-2018-06-07-21-17-03.m4a This was the keynote with the least updates, yet very intriguing. Not only are we watching to see how they really view the in-home experience(s), but also how they work with their stakeholders as their competitors. Again, I do my best to high level most announcements while giving some thought to what was shared vs. what wasn’t. This space will continue to heat up and gain competitiveness steam as it matures. The question is: who will own the living room space? Chime in and share your thoughts !

watchos-2018-06-06-07-52-36.m4a Yesterday, I covered specifically iOS 12. Today, I am covering watchOS and what Apple has learned (some things from Samsung I’d add) and implemented within their latest version: watchOS 5. Some highlights and general thoughts on why this is important and perhaps how it’ll continue to shape the wearable space that is still polarized to this day. (Check out my prior podcast on wearables) As always, please share your thoughts on if you think this will make an impact on the market!

ios-12-2018-06-05-20-02-161.m4a What an exciting week in the tech industry! 2018 has been exceptional so far. First, Facebook kicked off their Developer Conference on May 1st and 2nd. Then Google had their Google I/O event May 8-10. Simply incredible and gives you insight into what direction each company is headed. First, I will be diving in with  WWDC event(s) that started yesterday on June 4th. There are 4 main pillars: iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS. Today, I will be focusing solely on iOS and split them into 4 separate sections to make it a bit easier to follow. Listen along as I high level precisely what they are doing. Once I get to the end of this series, I will specifically address the differences between these 3 companies (named above) along with what they have in common to suggest where we (as an industry) may be headed. As always, love hearing your opinions, so please share your thoughts here or on Twitter. Enjoy!

google-duplex-cool-or-creepy-2018-05-30-20-37-44.wav I wanted to address a question I have been asked and discussed practically everyday since it first went public: What is Google Duplex and why is it so polarizing? To REALLY see for yourself, I would suggest going to YouTube and search it. That is 5 mins that may change your perception of how crazy AI/ML has become. On this particular podcast, I wanted to share with you my initial thoughts of why it’s a bit of both. I would argue it has the ability to make life a bit easier while being inevitable. As always, I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on Google Duplex. Sound off below!

memorial-day-reflection-2018-05-28-15-36-29.wav I wanted to take time out today to really think about why Memorial Day really matters. While it has started (and still is) about those who have fallen, I wanted to openly discuss how their personal sacrifices have given us opportunities beyond what we deserve. Even those of us who haven’t served have opportunities everyday to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Please take a listen and share with me your thoughts!

https://thoseconspicuousmillennials.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/wearables.wav I wanted to do a quick podcast on my thoughts regarding the wearable segment. I am finding many people are polarized and it seems as if it is a solution looking for a problem for many. Are you using it for fitness? Notifications? Perhaps very specific app(s) that you feel you couldn’t do without on your wrist? Take a listen and please share your personal thoughts on wearables. I would like to know do you wear one (or not) and if so,  what do you utilize most? If not, what would it take to get you to wear one?
