Cubs | Did Jed Hoyer Do Enough At The Trade Deadline?-এর সম্পূর্ণ প্রতিলিপি

WEBVTT
00:04.610 --> 00:07.391
[SPEAKER_00]: Once again, what a play-by-one.
00:07.991 --> 00:08.251
[SPEAKER_00]: Mercy.
00:08.311 --> 00:08.651
[SPEAKER_00]: Play-by-one.
00:09.011 --> 00:11.152
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought to keep her right.
00:11.232 --> 00:14.913
[SPEAKER_00]: Come back, come back, come back, come back.
00:15.173 --> 00:15.773
[SPEAKER_00]: It's gone.
00:15.793 --> 00:21.595
[SPEAKER_00]: So say, head to the basket, and he's got a bunch of toys.
00:21.615 --> 00:22.636
[SPEAKER_00]: Two out of my barrels.
00:22.976 --> 00:25.657
[SPEAKER_00]: Over the head of jeans, you rebate tightness clothes.
00:25.757 --> 00:29.778
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and the lights up to run the world's series.
00:45.492 --> 00:48.654
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, welcome into the Addison the thirty fifth podcast.
00:48.694 --> 00:49.774
[SPEAKER_01]: My name is Ryan Herrera.
00:49.814 --> 00:54.396
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be your host for this Cubs episode of the Addison the thirty fifth podcast.
00:55.257 --> 01:11.245
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm coming to you tonight Thursday July thirty first a trade deadline has come and gone and a little bit of a little bit of an uneasy feeling in Cubs land right now after that trade deadline.
01:12.606 --> 01:19.971
[SPEAKER_01]: So just to get into it right away, the cubs made some trades made some additions to the roster.
01:21.112 --> 01:29.997
[SPEAKER_01]: In some ways, you can consider them upgrades to the roster, but these are the trades that the cubs did end up making that before the trade deadline hit.
01:30.818 --> 01:38.623
[SPEAKER_01]: On Wednesday, they traded for right hand a picture starter potential swing man kind of guy Michael Cerroca.
01:39.104 --> 01:46.379
[SPEAKER_01]: from the nationals, and in that trade they sent back minor league outfielder Christian Franklin and minor league infielder Ronnie Cruz.
01:47.637 --> 01:53.642
[SPEAKER_01]: They also that day traded for right hand and reliever Andrew Kittridge Kittridge something like that.
01:54.983 --> 02:05.232
[SPEAKER_01]: From the Orioles and received minor league era traded minor league in field in fielder will free Delacruz send him to Baltimore.
02:05.252 --> 02:07.334
[SPEAKER_01]: And then on Thursday.
02:07.354 --> 02:10.437
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to say within the last.
02:11.743 --> 02:14.404
[SPEAKER_01]: hour to half hour before the trade deadline hit.
02:14.424 --> 02:21.848
[SPEAKER_01]: They ended up making a trade acquiring will he crap will he Castro from the twins for minor league right handed pictures.
02:22.482 --> 02:26.805
[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan Gallagher, who I believe was the number eight prospect in the system.
02:27.025 --> 02:36.792
[SPEAKER_01]: According to the pipeline at the time, I went back and looked and they had already been updated, so he wasn't there, but I want to say he was number eight in the system and another red handed lever in the minor leagues.
02:37.052 --> 02:46.279
[SPEAKER_01]: Sam Armstrong, and to open up a spot on the forty-man roster for Willie Castro, Miguel and Maya was moved to the sixty-day I.L.

02:46.839 --> 02:49.600
[SPEAKER_01]: Now that that's that's not a setback or anything like that.
02:49.640 --> 02:53.162
[SPEAKER_01]: He's been on the injured list for over sixty days now.
02:53.222 --> 03:06.549
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's always able to come off whenever he's out of rehab assignment, but he had been on the fifteen day LMI for basically since he went on the I he was on the fifteen day I at fifteen day I L since he went on the I L.
03:07.755 --> 03:09.456
[SPEAKER_01]: He's making rehab.
03:09.476 --> 03:10.917
[SPEAKER_01]: He's playing rehab games right now.
03:11.718 --> 03:17.401
[SPEAKER_01]: So whenever he's available and ready and healthy and ready to rejoin the team, he can do so.
03:17.441 --> 03:19.282
[SPEAKER_01]: He's just off the forty man roster right now.
03:19.883 --> 03:32.351
[SPEAKER_01]: That kind of just kicks the forty man decision down the road a little bit and allows the cubs to not have to, you know, DFA or just remove from the forty man roster, a currently healthy guy guy who can
03:33.296 --> 03:35.278
[SPEAKER_01]: in some way, contribute to the major league team.
03:35.318 --> 03:45.610
[SPEAKER_01]: So nothing more than paperwork or procedural move, but I know there was some people wondering on social media about it, like what does it mean?
03:45.710 --> 03:48.393
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what it is, it's just a procedural move.
03:49.034 --> 03:51.656
[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing big and Miguel and Maya can and will.
03:52.297 --> 03:54.098
[SPEAKER_01]: Rejoined the Cubs when he is healthy.
03:54.558 --> 03:59.239
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously he'll have to be added back to the forty man roster to come up to sixty-day I.L.
03:59.679 --> 04:01.980
[SPEAKER_01]: So it comes out to make a decision then.
04:02.100 --> 04:06.842
[SPEAKER_01]: But for now, that was the move to open up a forty man spot for Willie Castro.
04:07.462 --> 04:15.785
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the Cubs also traded for left handed reliever Taylor Rogers with the from the pirates who had actually just acquired him from the Reds on Wednesday.
04:16.626 --> 04:21.355
[SPEAKER_01]: and they also got cash and in return they traded away minor league outfielder.
04:21.375 --> 04:26.284
[SPEAKER_01]: I even breath hour, I'm not even sure if that's how you spell it or you say his name, but
04:28.373 --> 04:32.316
[SPEAKER_01]: that is the pack, that is the return for Taylor Rogers.
04:32.336 --> 04:42.582
[SPEAKER_01]: And I won't pretend to be super knowledgeable about what some of these minor leagueers, who some of the who the minor leagueers are and what the comes over they give it up.
04:42.762 --> 04:47.646
[SPEAKER_01]: Seems like they gave up from good pieces to get back pieces that can help their team right now.
04:48.086 --> 04:56.812
[SPEAKER_01]: I know there was talk about Ronnie Cruz and an uneasy feeling about trading him away and even Christian Franklin who's at the upper levels of the miners, but
04:57.612 --> 05:04.513
[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like guys that were either like a Christian Franklin wasn't gonna really crack the cubs roster anytime soon.

05:04.553 --> 05:13.575
[SPEAKER_01]: He was as far as organizational outfield depth chart seemed lower on it and wasn't really in a position to join that big league team.
05:13.595 --> 05:19.677
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was some of those guys some guys that are still a little bit away from contributing.
05:19.957 --> 05:23.337
[SPEAKER_01]: Guys that are not highly rated in the cubs system stuff like that.
05:23.397 --> 05:23.637
[SPEAKER_01]: So I
05:27.601 --> 05:42.368
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and I will talk about the corresponding move to open a spot for Taylor Rogers in a little bit, but you come away with that and on the surface and on the own like the very least they're fine.
05:42.408 --> 05:44.129
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the Taylor Rogers move is fine.
05:44.149 --> 05:50.052
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if he's necessarily, you know, he's going to slide into high leverage innings form.
05:50.694 --> 05:51.735
[SPEAKER_01]: But he has another lefty.
05:51.755 --> 05:55.117
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's been in the league for a while and he's put up good numbers.
05:55.137 --> 05:56.638
[SPEAKER_01]: He's put up good numbers this year.
05:57.358 --> 06:04.822
[SPEAKER_01]: So a solid addition to the bullpen, another guy you can use and lefty matchups and kind of we'll see where things go with that.
06:04.842 --> 06:06.984
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Willie Castro.
06:07.004 --> 06:16.909
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Willie Castro was the one that when the Cubs didn't get, you had no sorrows from the Diamondbacks.
06:16.949 --> 06:19.251
[SPEAKER_01]: He ended up getting traded to the the mayor.
06:20.217 --> 06:20.478
[SPEAKER_01]: Aaroners.
06:20.938 --> 06:22.361
[SPEAKER_01]: He ended up getting traded to the Mariners.
06:23.042 --> 06:29.413
[SPEAKER_01]: That would have been a huge upgrade to the roster as far as the cups of offense are ready really good.
06:30.133 --> 06:40.917
[SPEAKER_01]: You heading out towards putting together an elite offensive year would have really taken that line up to another level, a higher level than what is currently having has thirty six home runs, right?
06:41.618 --> 06:44.319
[SPEAKER_01]: He's been hitting the ball really well this year.
06:45.319 --> 06:49.641
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a rental bat, so it's not like you're committing to him super long term or anything.
06:49.661 --> 06:54.163
[SPEAKER_01]: He would have definitely been a good win now move for the team.
06:54.803 --> 06:56.044
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, the clubs didn't get him.
06:57.150 --> 07:09.191
[SPEAKER_01]: Willie Castro is another guy we've heard and talked about in this space as far as another option for the cubs to go out and get like Willie Castro is switch hitter he's a guy that
07:10.727 --> 07:12.528
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he can he is he's a good pickup.
07:12.548 --> 07:14.109
[SPEAKER_01]: We can play a bunch of different positions.
07:14.589 --> 07:18.251
[SPEAKER_01]: He's switch it or like I said, but he hits these been hitting lefties really well this year.
07:18.271 --> 07:24.734
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was a one thirty one WRC plus against lefties at on Thursday and the trade deadline.
07:24.874 --> 07:34.398
[SPEAKER_01]: So he could be using a super utility role and that would obviously allow guys around the field to get days off here in the last two months.
07:34.939 --> 07:37.780
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think one of the things with the cubs is they've had
07:38.550 --> 07:40.911
[SPEAKER_01]: such good health with their position player group.
07:41.452 --> 07:43.973
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of those guys have played most of the games.
07:44.573 --> 07:52.878
[SPEAKER_01]: So getting a guy like Willie Castro who can move all around the field who can be used in different lineups, different spots.
07:53.578 --> 08:05.504
[SPEAKER_01]: That's valuable in itself as the utility man, super utility man that can go and spell guys give you guys a day or two off their feet and feel like you're not necessarily missing a whole lot with that.
08:05.524 --> 08:05.985
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's
08:06.685 --> 08:10.366
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the cup's best pickup in my eyes of what they did it.
08:11.146 --> 08:22.128
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, when they weren't getting you any Oswarres anymore, felt like a guy that they could really use and a guy that could check off some boxes for them in just one player, and they went out and got him.
08:23.168 --> 08:28.269
[SPEAKER_01]: As far as like a kit ridge, I think he's a solid reliever.
08:28.469 --> 08:32.790
[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely a solid reliever's put up some good numbers and been pretty consistent over the last few years.
08:33.630 --> 08:40.455
[SPEAKER_01]: And it will remain to be seen how council uses him out of the bullpen, like I don't expect him to supplant.
08:41.296 --> 08:53.944
[SPEAKER_01]: Palencia as a team closer, but it seems like from from everything I've kind of read like he's definitely an option and higher leverage spots and maybe not the most higher leverage spots, but a guy that
08:54.941 --> 08:59.984
[SPEAKER_01]: can be comfortable, veteran guy can be comfortable in some higher leverage moments when given the chance.
09:00.024 --> 09:11.629
[SPEAKER_01]: So and intrigued to see what he adds to that bullpen as far as another veteran arm that can potentially gain career counsel's trust pretty quickly if things go right.
09:12.210 --> 09:18.213
[SPEAKER_01]: And then obviously Michael Soroka, he was a name we'd heard, but obviously like he's
09:20.233 --> 09:25.680
[SPEAKER_01]: feels more like a depth option there for the Cubs or a depth addition.
09:25.700 --> 09:27.762
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
09:29.504 --> 09:34.270
[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have like the like ERA isn't super good this year.
09:34.470 --> 09:35.512
[SPEAKER_01]: The expected ERA.
09:35.532 --> 09:36.633
[SPEAKER_01]: Some of his peripherals are good.
09:36.973 --> 09:39.817
[SPEAKER_01]: The expected ERA is a lot better than what the ERA shows.
09:40.405 --> 09:42.606
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the strike out at walk numbers are fine.
09:43.086 --> 09:48.148
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, seems like an upside play there with the cubs.
09:48.709 --> 09:51.510
[SPEAKER_01]: I know Jed Hoyer, I don't want to say it was on like Marquis.
09:51.810 --> 09:59.113
[SPEAKER_01]: The cubs live or something had said that they had actually looked at Cerroca and the offseason and tried to get him, but didn't.
09:59.293 --> 10:03.215
[SPEAKER_01]: And this was kind of the opportunity to bring them to the organization.
10:05.684 --> 10:15.589
[SPEAKER_01]: I think with Jed told reporters that regularly today is that he will slot into the rotation or is expected to slot into the rotation here as he joins the team.
10:16.470 --> 10:22.833
[SPEAKER_01]: But obviously, James and Tyrone and have your side are closing in on returns here, potentially in the next couple of weeks.
10:23.874 --> 10:28.356
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe a little bit longer, but I don't know, Council had said maybe mid-May ish.
10:28.536 --> 10:31.018
[SPEAKER_01]: So if that checks out, you're looking at
10:32.043 --> 10:44.129
[SPEAKER_01]: A few, a few starts where Suroka would take and then you kind of figure out if he moves to the bullpen and is a swing man or a multi-ending guy for you and figure out how the pieces fall into place then.
10:44.189 --> 10:47.351
[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, again, I think it's an upside play.
10:47.371 --> 10:51.553
[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's underlying numbers there that I kind of listed that
10:52.373 --> 11:13.660
[SPEAKER_01]: encourage you a little bit and that maybe bringing him from the nationals to team that obviously was telling the deadline to a team in the cubs that have a great defense would put a great defense behind him a good lineup to give him lead stuff like that maybe that gets more out of him than maybe putting him in the cubs pitching infrastructure and just kind of seeing what
11:15.421 --> 11:22.086
[SPEAKER_01]: Tommy, how to be in the rest of the pitching group, Casey Jacobsen, all those guys seeing what they can potentially get out of him.
11:22.106 --> 11:25.528
[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like an upside play, but definitely not.
11:26.289 --> 11:31.533
[SPEAKER_01]: You're definitely not looking at a top of the rotation addition, which is kind of where I want to go with this.
11:33.034 --> 11:36.316
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, as I said, I think overall the moves are fine.
11:36.336 --> 11:38.438
[SPEAKER_01]: I think.
11:39.998 --> 11:47.724
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're still like an underwhelming or a bit of an anti-climactic feeling to the cups and what they end up doing at the trade deadline.
11:47.824 --> 11:51.307
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the question is, did jet and the cups for an office?
11:51.367 --> 11:56.992
[SPEAKER_01]: Did they do enough to bolster this team and put them, you know, maximize this season, put them in a position?
11:59.714 --> 12:00.875
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the main thing was
12:03.195 --> 12:06.378
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll go back to the last winner when they acquired Kyle Tucker.
12:06.778 --> 12:13.225
[SPEAKER_01]: That was a bold move to add a star bat arguably the best bat on the market there.
12:13.245 --> 12:16.488
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know if he was technically on the market there.
12:16.508 --> 12:23.234
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember exactly how that whole situation played out, but like definitely one of the best bats that was made available.
12:24.437 --> 12:28.020
[SPEAKER_01]: and they pounced, didn't give up, but it wasn't cheap, right?
12:28.060 --> 12:31.063
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, cam Smith, E-Soc Bradis, Hayden was Neski.
12:31.523 --> 12:34.405
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what Jen had to give up to a choir, Kyle Tucker.
12:34.425 --> 12:38.649
[SPEAKER_01]: But he was bold and making that move, and so far, I would say the move has worked out.
12:40.130 --> 12:45.335
[SPEAKER_01]: Just didn't, I think, at this trade deadline, it just didn't seem like,
12:46.567 --> 12:55.822
[SPEAKER_01]: Jed was willing to be that bold to make the additions that maybe it seemed like they needed to make.
12:56.844 --> 12:59.268
[SPEAKER_01]: They held on to their top one hundred prospects and I get like
13:00.647 --> 13:01.847
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I won't let me read this quote.
13:01.867 --> 13:05.709
[SPEAKER_01]: This is what Jethoyer told reporters today about the starting pitching market.
13:06.609 --> 13:09.270
[SPEAKER_01]: The way I would say it, very few rental starters.
13:09.350 --> 13:12.331
[SPEAKER_01]: Effectively, no starters that had one year of control after this.
13:12.391 --> 13:15.293
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the controllable starters, none of those guys changed hands.
13:15.813 --> 13:21.955
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, we didn't acquire them and no one else did either the asking price we felt like was something that we couldn't do to the future.
13:22.515 --> 13:28.318
[SPEAKER_01]: In the end, the asking price on those guys would have been so detrimental to our future that we decided against it.
13:29.738 --> 13:30.438
[SPEAKER_01]: I get all that.
13:30.699 --> 13:39.883
[SPEAKER_01]: I get you see or you remember everything you heard over the last few days leading up to the trade deadline it was that the starting pitching market.
13:41.443 --> 13:45.227
[SPEAKER_01]: is her with the asking price was high.
13:45.968 --> 13:56.759
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you see it when you see all the starters that didn't and the moving, especially when you're talking about the guys with control, you know, Sandial Contra and Edward Cabrera remain with the marlins.
13:57.560 --> 14:00.343
[SPEAKER_01]: Joe Ryan still with the twins, Mitch Caler still with the pirates.
14:00.363 --> 14:01.204
[SPEAKER_01]: Like guys like that.
14:01.224 --> 14:01.344
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean,
14:02.065 --> 14:06.347
[SPEAKER_01]: even some of the other names that Dylan ceases didn't get moved, Zach Allen didn't get moved.
14:07.567 --> 14:11.568
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, Merrill Kelly did, we get traded to the Diamondbacks.
14:12.329 --> 14:18.751
[SPEAKER_01]: But he also brought back three of this is according to Steve Gilbert over at MLB.com.
14:19.771 --> 14:22.192
[SPEAKER_01]: brought back three of Texas's best pitching prospects.
14:22.772 --> 14:26.554
[SPEAKER_01]: Number five, prospect number nine, prospect number thirteen, prospect and their system.
14:27.354 --> 14:44.957
[SPEAKER_01]: I won't pretend to know, yeah, I won't pretend to, like I know too much about the Ranger system or how highly rated these guys were outside of just the Ranger's organization, but seem like a pretty solid price to pay for Merrill Kelly and whether the diamond bags brought back for them.
14:44.997 --> 14:49.258
[SPEAKER_01]: So even a rental arm like that brought a decent return.
14:49.278 --> 14:54.279
[SPEAKER_01]: So I get not wanting to
14:55.620 --> 15:17.119
[SPEAKER_01]: trade trade away a bunch of top or hundred prospect, especially when so many of those guys are like, right, our big league radio almost in a sense, like most of us stay was already up with the cubs right now, home in Casey and Kevin all contra, both in a forty man one call away if an injury hits and they need him like this is this.
15:18.675 --> 15:30.362
[SPEAKER_01]: And then Jackson Wiggins is like another to highly rated prospect the cubs thing really highly of him and their system as far as pitching goes like they're I understand that way and apart with some of those guys, but it just.
15:32.783 --> 15:36.546
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I think I think there's an underwhelming feeling overall because.
15:37.221 --> 15:50.490
[SPEAKER_01]: I think one of the things I don't remember who said it, but so I maybe was I don't remember who who said it, but someone had said that the colors are expected to be the most one of the most aggressive teams at the trade deadline and and to be fair.
15:52.008 --> 16:10.628
[SPEAKER_01]: That can mean, you know, leaving no stone on turn really pushing to get guys doesn't mean you get them across the finish line because it takes two to tango, but being aggressive pushing, calling, asking about everyone, like I can still understand if that's what the cubs did, they just didn't come, come away with more.
16:12.723 --> 16:14.824
[SPEAKER_01]: I think overall the moves are fine on their own.
16:15.345 --> 16:17.766
[SPEAKER_01]: There's just that underwhelming feeling.
16:17.907 --> 16:21.129
[SPEAKER_01]: And definitely, I mean, you look at social media, look at Twitter or whatever.
16:21.209 --> 16:23.290
[SPEAKER_01]: And Cubans are disappointed for sure.
16:23.310 --> 16:26.833
[SPEAKER_01]: And the results of the trade deadline.
16:26.853 --> 16:32.937
[SPEAKER_01]: I think plenty are frustrated at what happened at the trade deadline, considering.
16:32.957 --> 16:39.842
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think you look at the position the Cubs have played themselves to into.
16:40.941 --> 16:47.624
[SPEAKER_01]: They're the second best team, five of the second best record in Major League Baseball right now at the out of the trade deadline.
16:47.644 --> 16:57.288
[SPEAKER_01]: A game behind the Brewers, obviously, in their division, but right there with the best records in baseball, I mentioned the Cal Tucker trade.
16:57.308 --> 17:02.830
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, he could be a free agent at the end of this year and could move on.
17:02.870 --> 17:07.712
[SPEAKER_01]: He could not be a cub at the end in twenty twenty six and that's it.
17:08.513 --> 17:08.813
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think
17:10.880 --> 17:12.862
[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like it was time to make a big swing.
17:12.882 --> 17:17.586
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're the cubs in my opinion, I felt like it was time to make a big swing.
17:17.606 --> 17:23.651
[SPEAKER_01]: I understand not trading top one hundred prospects for rental pieces.
17:23.671 --> 17:32.759
[SPEAKER_01]: I understand not trading, you know, whatever package of top one hundred prospects would have taken to acquire one of those.
17:34.039 --> 17:39.122
[SPEAKER_01]: control, controllable, higher profile bigger name starting pitchers.
17:40.162 --> 17:43.144
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I get the asking prices high and then that makes things tough.
17:44.705 --> 17:50.768
[SPEAKER_01]: But on the other side, it was, like I said, like, Jed was in the offseason bold and getting the Tucker move.
17:51.388 --> 18:01.514
[SPEAKER_01]: Just didn't feel like he was willing to be as bold this or this trade deadline season to go out and get that because we, and it's not even just starting pitcher.
18:02.740 --> 18:21.636
[SPEAKER_01]: We kind of talked about like the bullpen and they made some additions to the bullpen that could definitely help in the last two months of the season, but you're also looking at a closer and Daniel Palencia who while he's been fantastic for him in that role, he's never pitched into the bright light to the postseason who knows how he'll fare there and you know, if
18:22.977 --> 18:31.964
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, not kind of what I guess, but if under performance happens or injury happens to a guy like Blensia, you know, where do you turn as far as someone to close games?
18:32.385 --> 18:47.977
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it made sense for the cups to go out and and get a guy who can have the very least help carry some of that closer load that ninth inning load that's a situation load, someone with experience in that role that can help Daniel Blensia out and, you know,
18:48.437 --> 18:53.460
[SPEAKER_01]: worse, not even worse comes the worst, but just there's the scenario where maybe that guy becomes your clothes or right.
18:54.861 --> 18:58.684
[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't do that, they didn't go and get a starting picture.
19:00.045 --> 19:04.508
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I get asking prices were probably high for a lot of the guys and the cubs.
19:05.172 --> 19:08.573
[SPEAKER_01]: weren't willing to give up their very top guys to get those deals done.
19:09.353 --> 19:18.336
[SPEAKER_01]: But with the position, the team had played themselves to with Cal Tucker being able to hit for a didn't see potentially walk after this year.
19:18.356 --> 19:28.579
[SPEAKER_01]: It felt like the time to make a big swing, you have to take a big swing and it felt like the roster, the players, the group of coaches, it felt like the group is a whole
19:29.809 --> 19:30.669
[SPEAKER_01]: kind of deserve that.
19:31.470 --> 19:42.013
[SPEAKER_01]: They kind of deserve the front office to not be weren't too worried about the future and what making a trading away some some of the even some of their best prospects will do for the future.
19:42.694 --> 19:56.179
[SPEAKER_01]: Because, you know, I think you can look back, are you think back to the theo absteen quote of, was it opportunities to win our sacred and this was very clearly an opportunity for the cups to win and I don't think
19:57.139 --> 20:08.788
[SPEAKER_01]: I think going into this season, I don't know how many people would have tagged the cubs to be in the position they're in now at the trade deadline with two months of games left to play.
20:08.808 --> 20:26.343
[SPEAKER_01]: I think if you would have told people then, obviously, I think Cubs fans would have been ecstatic about that, but also changes the expectations from make the playoffs to, okay, you've actually put yourself in a position to potentially make a world series runner or take a real shot at it.
20:27.153 --> 20:30.578
[SPEAKER_01]: like maximize the potential of the season, take the big swing.
20:30.618 --> 20:37.989
[SPEAKER_01]: If you can, like the opportunities to win our sacred, this is your opportunity to win, go and do what you can to get it.
20:38.069 --> 20:41.574
[SPEAKER_01]: And I get the comes front office as an isn't
20:42.525 --> 20:46.707
[SPEAKER_01]: super like inclined to make all-in moves.
20:47.067 --> 21:03.133
[SPEAKER_01]: I get that and there's definitely some risk in that and some irrationality in that, your irrationality in that as far as making all-in moves, especially when your front office philosophy is kind of focused on winning while keeping an eye on the future.
21:03.273 --> 21:06.775
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's kind of jett-aware in the front office's philosophy and MO.
21:08.135 --> 21:14.678
[SPEAKER_01]: So it kind of fits into that ammo or that ideology of what they ended up doing at the trade deadline.
21:14.698 --> 21:21.862
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, again, they're, they are one game back of the best record of Major League baseball.
21:22.342 --> 21:24.483
[SPEAKER_01]: They have a solid lead in the wild card.
21:25.944 --> 21:33.027
[SPEAKER_01]: They are lucky that the brewers didn't make a ton of big moves either, but you're, you're not, you're,
21:33.722 --> 21:35.882
[SPEAKER_01]: you're not leading the division anymore.
21:36.483 --> 21:44.104
[SPEAKER_01]: Other and all contenders around you, like the match podries and fillies were aggressive and made big moves to bolster their own team.
21:44.984 --> 21:50.725
[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like the cubs were unwilling or I don't want to say they were unwilling to make a big swing.
21:50.785 --> 21:54.746
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they were they were definitely willing to make a big swing.
21:54.766 --> 21:56.426
[SPEAKER_01]: They just weren't willing to go me.
22:01.449 --> 22:03.501
[SPEAKER_01]: high asking prices that we've heard it.
22:04.570 --> 22:06.291
[SPEAKER_01]: seem kind of outrageous in a way.
22:06.311 --> 22:20.776
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, and I think, again, looking at the starting picture market and seeing how many of those guys didn't end up getting moved, it seemed like, or it's not didn't seem like the cubs were not the only team that was unwilling to meet those asking prices.
22:21.196 --> 22:23.717
[SPEAKER_01]: Twenty nine other teams for those kind of guys didn't get moved.
22:23.757 --> 22:29.739
[SPEAKER_01]: Twenty nine other teams weren't willing to meet the sky high asking prices that some teams were asking for.
22:30.139 --> 22:33.640
[SPEAKER_01]: We don't know all the exact figures or the exact players that they wanted back, but
22:34.945 --> 22:41.347
[SPEAKER_01]: The fact that none of those guys got moved means no team was willing to go out and meet the asking price.
22:41.367 --> 22:47.768
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not just a cubs thing, but it does, again, feel underwhelming, feels a little anti-climactic.
22:47.828 --> 23:03.512
[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like the cubs had an opportunity to really bolster and add and plug some holes in a group and bring in some higher profile names to really upgrade and really enhance this team's
23:04.694 --> 23:14.081
[SPEAKER_01]: ability in this team's potential, especially when you're looking at not just playoffs anymore, but potentially making a deep run and even a world series run.
23:14.241 --> 23:22.287
[SPEAKER_01]: That's to have even those kinds of goals and expectations now isn't unrealistic anymore with the way that comes to play so far this season.
23:24.088 --> 23:27.831
[SPEAKER_01]: All that considered, I feel like I've talked about that a lot now.
23:28.371 --> 23:33.915
[SPEAKER_01]: We've been going over twenty minutes and I feel like I keep coming back to the same point and talking in circles, but
23:35.228 --> 23:38.009
[SPEAKER_01]: It overall just feels like a missed opportunity for the cubs to do more.
23:38.309 --> 23:53.053
[SPEAKER_01]: I like some of the pieces they did bring in and I think overall this team is better now than it was a few days ago, but just it feels like a missed opportunity to do more and that's a bummer when you're looking at what the cubs roster
23:54.733 --> 23:58.597
[SPEAKER_01]: the position that comes roster, played themselves into that.
23:58.677 --> 24:00.520
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I think they earned some big additions.
24:00.560 --> 24:01.521
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they deserve that.
24:01.561 --> 24:02.622
[SPEAKER_01]: A big swing like that.
24:03.703 --> 24:04.804
[SPEAKER_01]: Cubs in and do it now.
24:05.365 --> 24:09.309
[SPEAKER_01]: We wait and see what we wait and see if that comes back to hurt them.
24:10.348 --> 24:11.308
[SPEAKER_01]: later on in the season.
24:11.348 --> 24:17.410
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they still have enough to make that playoff run to get into our total room and play postseason baseball.
24:18.550 --> 24:24.471
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if the lack of that big swing, especially when you're talking about a bringing in a no doubt playoff starter.
24:24.851 --> 24:33.293
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if that comes back to hurt the cubs in a couple months because you look at what the cubs have now, especially in that rotation.
24:35.227 --> 24:40.892
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not convinced that they have three or four playoff starters right now in that rotation.
24:41.213 --> 24:56.688
[SPEAKER_01]: I think guys can step up and turn into that or show you that they can be that or gain some trust in that sense, but it would have been really nice for the cubs to have added one of those guys that you can give the ball to in a playoff game without a second thought.
24:57.930 --> 25:13.235
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's that, again, overall just feel like it feels like a missed opportunity to me, feels underwhelming, feels a little anti-climactic, and we'll see how this plays out for the cause moving forward, especially as they continue to try to make this play out, but the brewers aren't making it easy on them.
25:14.096 --> 25:20.818
[SPEAKER_01]: But now they have what they have and are gonna have to figure out how to make all that work if they want to make a deep run here.
25:22.258 --> 25:26.140
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't mention the corresponding move for the Taylor Rogers
25:28.293 --> 25:31.195
[SPEAKER_01]: Taylor Rogers trade there to open up a forty man's platform.
25:32.316 --> 25:37.579
[SPEAKER_01]: Because that's my next segment and that is Ryan Presley being designated for assignment.
25:37.639 --> 25:39.540
[SPEAKER_01]: The Ryan Presley experiment is over.
25:40.261 --> 25:44.063
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, was DFA to make room on a forty man roster for Taylor Rogers.
25:46.060 --> 25:52.182
[SPEAKER_01]: look at I'd like I like the Ryan Presley acquisition in the off season.
25:52.202 --> 25:53.702
[SPEAKER_01]: They got him an entry from the Astros.
25:53.742 --> 25:55.003
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they got some cash with it.
25:56.023 --> 25:58.544
[SPEAKER_01]: And we're hoping he could work into the closer role.
25:58.604 --> 26:00.745
[SPEAKER_01]: He had plenty of experience with that in Houston.
26:02.025 --> 26:03.425
[SPEAKER_01]: I like the addition at the time.
26:03.445 --> 26:07.946
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw, I'll say that and say that I did, that was my thought process.
26:08.466 --> 26:21.409
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw, you know, some of the metrics, I think the fastball velocity was just, you know, I don't, I actually don't remember if it declined from the previous year, but it was just over the years you'd seen the decline.
26:22.969 --> 26:25.450
[SPEAKER_01]: And it wasn't set up man after the Astros got Josh Hader.
26:26.510 --> 26:26.790
[SPEAKER_01]: And so he,
26:28.953 --> 26:39.697
[SPEAKER_01]: was maybe a change of scenery kind of guy guy that with the closer experience that you could go in and put him in the closer role and felt like maybe he could help you lock down some games.
26:41.037 --> 26:43.058
[SPEAKER_01]: Overall, he just didn't have it with the cups of the season.
26:43.278 --> 26:43.938
[SPEAKER_01]: That was the main thing.
26:43.958 --> 26:49.400
[SPEAKER_01]: He just didn't have it with the cups of the season as far as what they needed him to be.
26:50.705 --> 26:58.647
[SPEAKER_01]: He had a seven point six to ERA through May six, which is that game against the giants when he gave up eight earned runs in the eleven inning.
26:59.467 --> 27:01.848
[SPEAKER_01]: Just an awful performance there from him.
27:02.808 --> 27:08.010
[SPEAKER_01]: And so yeah, seven point six to ERA at that point and then ended up not.
27:08.650 --> 27:10.751
[SPEAKER_01]: being in the closures role anymore after that.
27:10.892 --> 27:17.976
[SPEAKER_01]: He was taken out of that role, was used in more lower leverage spots, stuff like that.
27:18.717 --> 27:20.518
[SPEAKER_01]: And he actually had a pretty nice run.
27:20.738 --> 27:24.500
[SPEAKER_01]: He gave up no-one runs in his next sixteen appearances after that.
27:25.401 --> 27:29.464
[SPEAKER_01]: And no-one runs in twenty four of his next twenty five appearances after that.
27:30.064 --> 27:36.388
[SPEAKER_01]: which went for a zero point seven, seven, seven ERA, which brought his season ERA down to three point two two.
27:37.109 --> 27:43.613
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think at the same time, you still also kind of saw like you were concerned about it.
27:43.833 --> 27:46.394
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the hard hit rate was bad.
27:46.414 --> 27:49.556
[SPEAKER_01]: The strike I'll rate wasn't good.
27:49.897 --> 27:51.157
[SPEAKER_01]: The whip rate wasn't high.
27:51.478 --> 27:52.558
[SPEAKER_01]: Wasn't getting a lot of chase.
27:53.239 --> 27:57.562
[SPEAKER_01]: Average, exit velocity was higher than you wanted it to be.
28:01.327 --> 28:03.147
[SPEAKER_01]: below average with the walkway.
28:03.187 --> 28:14.490
[SPEAKER_01]: Just the metrics and the underlying numbers just didn't inspire a whole ton of confidence outside of the fact that you got a lot of ground balls, which is good when you have a such a good defensive infield like the cops have.
28:16.111 --> 28:21.932
[SPEAKER_01]: But they were just signs that you were concerned about even when things were going well in the box core forum.
28:23.426 --> 28:31.354
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, over his last five appearances, get hosted at twelve point six zero ERA.
28:31.694 --> 28:35.517
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't remember how many earned runs that ended up being maybe seven or eight, something like that.
28:36.658 --> 28:39.821
[SPEAKER_01]: Over his last five appearances, but that included four home runs.
28:41.603 --> 28:45.965
[SPEAKER_01]: Also includes a grand slam to Andrew Vaughn to break the game open.
28:45.985 --> 28:51.969
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe that was on Tuesday, which is when Craig Council quickly went to the dugout phone.
28:52.029 --> 28:55.450
[SPEAKER_01]: And I got whoever was up.
28:55.490 --> 28:56.811
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember what was in that game.
28:56.911 --> 29:09.038
[SPEAKER_01]: That game kind of blew up in the comes faces in a hurry, especially with that grand slam to Andrew Vaughn, which side note still not sure how he's doing it or what the brewers figured out with him, what made it click with him.
29:10.096 --> 29:19.888
[SPEAKER_01]: He's been a big addition for them without reshaskin' so another big brewers poll out of nowhere that has them leading the majors.
29:20.088 --> 29:24.914
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I want to say still with the best record of the majors, definitely leading a nationally central by game.
29:26.416 --> 29:27.838
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, so side note over.
29:29.657 --> 29:32.098
[SPEAKER_01]: It comes needed to improve the bullpen at this trade deadline.
29:32.198 --> 29:38.242
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they did that with a couple with two, maybe even three of the arms they brought in.
29:39.262 --> 29:41.444
[SPEAKER_01]: And Ryan Presley just didn't have it.
29:41.464 --> 29:46.366
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that bullpen at his six ERA in July, and I think that was third and baseball.
29:46.967 --> 29:49.868
[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan Presley just wasn't doing the job.
29:50.228 --> 29:52.390
[SPEAKER_01]: He did have that stretch.
29:53.130 --> 29:58.193
[SPEAKER_01]: A long stretch where I didn't even realize how few earned runs he was giving up during that stretch.
29:58.753 --> 30:00.774
[SPEAKER_01]: But it still felt like there was traffic out there.
30:00.814 --> 30:02.536
[SPEAKER_01]: He was walking guys, giving up hits.
30:03.056 --> 30:07.419
[SPEAKER_01]: There were guys on base and he was getting out of it, which is a credit to him and his own right.
30:07.459 --> 30:11.942
[SPEAKER_01]: But like when you're when you're making the traffic yourself, it's hard to give you too much credit.
30:11.962 --> 30:13.964
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
30:14.204 --> 30:19.848
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I go back to I thought acquiring him and seeing if he could be your closer was a good move.
30:20.752 --> 30:22.013
[SPEAKER_01]: Ultimately, it didn't turn out that way.
30:22.814 --> 30:25.716
[SPEAKER_01]: Ultimately, did just didn't have it in this cup of bullpen.
30:25.736 --> 30:37.846
[SPEAKER_01]: He did fine in lower-level Jennings, but when he was, I think, starting getting back into some more higher-level spots, just wasn't the picture that Cubs needed to, needed him to be
30:38.767 --> 30:45.652
[SPEAKER_01]: They brought in a couple of new arms and Taylor Rogers and Andrew Kidridge, who should help bolster that pull pin.
30:46.112 --> 30:49.134
[SPEAKER_01]: They have other options outside of Presley on that roster.
30:49.594 --> 30:52.016
[SPEAKER_01]: Like a Caleb Field Barnes doing pretty well for himself.
30:52.096 --> 30:53.857
[SPEAKER_01]: Brad Keller is doing pretty well for himself.
30:54.217 --> 30:59.601
[SPEAKER_01]: I mentioned Daniel Pulence earlier, but like he's been a lockdown closer since he took over that job in mid May.
30:59.621 --> 31:02.482
[SPEAKER_01]: The experiment just didn't work out.
31:02.502 --> 31:04.844
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, you know,
31:06.497 --> 31:14.959
[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of as simple as you can put is like they they took a rid or they took a chance on Ryan and Presley.
31:16.139 --> 31:26.942
[SPEAKER_01]: Just didn't work out with him here and it was time for him to go and I guess we'll kind of see what happens as far as the DFA goes and where Ryan pressed the ends up but.
31:28.350 --> 31:45.910
[SPEAKER_01]: the cubs cutting ties with Ryan Presley, getting him off the forty-man roster, seeing where that goes over the next few days, and especially when you look at the Chris Flex and DFA also a couple days ago, going to be a little bit of a new look, bullpen for the cubs now after the trade deadline.
31:46.423 --> 31:47.803
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll see what happens around impressed him.
31:47.823 --> 31:53.285
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was a good guy, a veteran guy, I think he was a good presence in that clubhouse.
31:53.325 --> 32:02.267
[SPEAKER_01]: I think, especially with the bullpen guys, or in the bullpen, but especially with the younger bullpen guys, I think he was a helpful veteran to have around.
32:02.767 --> 32:10.049
[SPEAKER_01]: But a similar way to like Hector Nearest kind of was that, or he definitely was that as well last year, he was a good veteran presence.
32:10.069 --> 32:13.789
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, how he came from the astros too, a late in any guy from the astros.
32:14.990 --> 32:15.710
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was a good
32:16.630 --> 32:18.051
[SPEAKER_01]: Presence in that locker room.
32:18.111 --> 32:20.233
[SPEAKER_01]: He was a good locker room leader.
32:20.313 --> 32:26.697
[SPEAKER_01]: He was a guy for young bullpen arms to seek advice from bounce ideas off of.
32:26.777 --> 32:28.438
[SPEAKER_01]: And then was good at that kind of stuff.
32:28.498 --> 32:29.639
[SPEAKER_01]: He was a good presence there.
32:30.159 --> 32:32.341
[SPEAKER_01]: But when it's not working out, it's not working out.
32:32.621 --> 32:39.666
[SPEAKER_01]: And in a season like this, a season where everyone is going to matter going down the stretch with how the drawers have been playing.
32:41.520 --> 32:43.722
[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan Presley just didn't fit into this bullpen anymore.
32:44.422 --> 32:51.588
[SPEAKER_01]: And it comes made the decision to look at what upgrades they can make and feel like they made them.
32:51.728 --> 32:52.949
[SPEAKER_01]: They feel like they made them.
32:53.570 --> 32:56.672
[SPEAKER_01]: And that meant that Ryan Presley was expendable.
32:56.793 --> 33:00.075
[SPEAKER_01]: So good luck to Ryan Presley and whatever is next for him.
33:00.536 --> 33:01.977
[SPEAKER_01]: If he stays in baseball, that'd be great.
33:02.017 --> 33:05.139
[SPEAKER_01]: But he is probably nearing the end of his career anyway.
33:05.199 --> 33:09.163
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see what he decides, what options are out there for him.
33:12.022 --> 33:18.411
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, good luck to him and we'll see what a little bit of a new look bullpen for the Cubs is able to do.
33:19.813 --> 33:25.240
[SPEAKER_01]: My last thing here before I get out of here is remembering Rhino, Rhine Sandberg.
33:26.087 --> 33:54.284
[SPEAKER_01]: died Monday at sixty five years old had a battle with cancer over the last two years now or a year and a half two years something along those lines and that news broke Monday mid game maybe like the fifth or sixth inning as I don't what I remember seeing and and seeing that news that I'm just like what the hell you know what what what are you saying Ryan Sandberg is dead you know
33:56.698 --> 34:00.845
[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, like thoughts and prayers to his family and his friends.
34:00.865 --> 34:04.632
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he has a lot of family meant everything to him and that's something that
34:05.537 --> 34:22.430
[SPEAKER_01]: When you look at his statue ceremony last year, like a lot of his, I think part of his speech was saying like family, friends, love, like did all that kind of stuff was of utmost importance to him, especially post playing career.
34:22.470 --> 34:27.413
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, loved his wife, loved his family, loved his kids and grandkids, and that was
34:28.434 --> 34:31.217
[SPEAKER_01]: Super, that was a super big part of his life.
34:31.858 --> 34:36.624
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, wrestling piece to Ryan Sandberg, thoughts and prayers to his family.
34:36.664 --> 34:40.368
[SPEAKER_01]: I have to difficult time, but it's also a difficult time in Cubsland.
34:40.388 --> 34:46.115
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's a whole generation of Cubs fans that
34:47.353 --> 34:53.296
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, grew up on WGM, Riley, that everyone got WGM around the country and grew up.
34:54.797 --> 35:04.202
[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many, a whole generation of Cubs fans spread out across the country that became Cubs fans because of WGM, but definitely because of Ryan Sandberg and what he was able to do.
35:04.823 --> 35:06.484
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you think about it.
35:07.610 --> 35:28.310
[SPEAKER_01]: ten-time all-star, nine-time goal-glove, seven-time silver slugger, nationally again VP in nineteen eighty four, the Ryan Sandberg game on wgin, I want to say that was wgin's game of the week or something like that, like he was a star in this city, he was a star for the cubs, one of the all-time great cubs of course, and he
35:30.172 --> 35:33.294
[SPEAKER_01]: made, he made a whole generation of cubs fans.
35:33.454 --> 35:40.417
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's obviously well before my time as far as, you know, potentially from growing up as a cubs family.
35:40.437 --> 35:43.479
[SPEAKER_01]: Brian Sandberg was playing well before I was born.
35:44.239 --> 35:45.980
[SPEAKER_01]: But my dad was a kid in the eighties.
35:46.000 --> 35:50.442
[SPEAKER_01]: My dad was a kid when Ryan Sandberg was at his best when Ryan Sandberg was Ryan Sandberg.
35:51.123 --> 35:56.125
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, my, my parent, he was as a, he was my dad's favorite player.
35:56.365 --> 35:57.646
[SPEAKER_01]: He still has my dad's favorite player.
35:57.686 --> 35:58.546
[SPEAKER_01]: I think in any sport.
36:00.698 --> 36:15.325
[SPEAKER_01]: My parents didn't exactly name me after Ryan Sandberg right like he's Ryan I'm Ryan close enough though, but not exactly, but my dad still calls me Rhino, you know, it calls me Rhino and kind of an honor of his favorite player of all time.
36:16.388 --> 36:32.453
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's a sad day in Cubsland, not just because this all-time grade club passed away, but a whole generation that idolized Brian Sandburn for the way he played, the way he led that team, did the class and honor that he showed.
36:32.473 --> 36:44.617
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you hear, you hear people talk about him and the way he interacted with fans and teammates and friends and then just anyone who kind of came across with a genuine
36:45.755 --> 37:13.600
[SPEAKER_01]: genuine good guy genuine genuine great guy with a great heart and you know that's that's tough to lose in an an an organization that's so big and so widespread when you talk about across this country to lose a hero in the organization is it is just super sad I'm like I said it's it was a sad day in rigleyville sad day for not just a whole generation that comes from for cubs fans anywhere
37:15.590 --> 37:25.078
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think I've got to introduce myself to him, one set spring training, twenty three, maybe twenty, a couple years ago.
37:25.098 --> 37:33.905
[SPEAKER_01]: I was able to introduce myself to him, very brief interaction, but even then making a few seconds to look me in the eye, shake my hand, nice to meet you.
37:33.925 --> 37:38.910
[SPEAKER_01]: That was super cool, especially knowing that that was my dad's favorite player.
37:39.730 --> 37:43.633
[SPEAKER_01]: So being able to tell my dad that I met Ryan's hamburger, that was a pretty cool thing.
37:44.635 --> 37:48.741
[SPEAKER_01]: But again, everything new here, he was just a heck of a guy and did a lot for.
37:50.282 --> 37:57.208
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, again, love this family, love the fans, love the teammates, love this friends, like love the cubs.
37:58.428 --> 38:00.230
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's a sad day.
38:00.250 --> 38:03.032
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a sad, I mean, it's still sad.
38:03.052 --> 38:07.976
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a sad day and cubs like when that news broke to sad day in the day since.
38:08.617 --> 38:14.541
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure Friday there's gonna be some kind of tribute to Ryan Sandberg.
38:14.581 --> 38:17.564
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe Saturday, the cubs are gonna be wearing
38:18.364 --> 38:20.245
[SPEAKER_01]: Jersey with the number twenty three on the back.
38:20.265 --> 38:21.565
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe that's true.
38:22.265 --> 38:25.907
[SPEAKER_01]: They'll also be wearing Sandberg patches on their jerseys for the rest of the year.
38:27.107 --> 38:30.848
[SPEAKER_01]: So definitely a huge loss in the college community.
38:30.868 --> 38:40.712
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's again, like, thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends, anyone that love Rhino, anyone that was close to Rhino.
38:41.692 --> 38:43.973
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a tough time, of course, but
38:45.088 --> 38:58.297
[SPEAKER_01]: You also have the memories of all of things didn't as career and then getting inducted to the Hall of Fame and having as number twenty three retired by the Cubs in all five got a statue last year on the fortieth anniversary of the Sandberg game.
39:00.258 --> 39:02.380
[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely a sad thing but.
39:03.440 --> 39:07.583
[SPEAKER_01]: It leaves behind a lot of great memories for Cubs fans all over the world.
39:08.404 --> 39:11.726
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, we'll rest in peace, Ryan Sandberg.
39:12.827 --> 39:14.888
[SPEAKER_01]: Cubs land is going to miss you for sure.
39:16.775 --> 39:21.519
[SPEAKER_01]: So before I get out of here, let me just give you the quick breakdown of what's coming up for the cubs.
39:21.579 --> 39:25.662
[SPEAKER_01]: They have three against Baltimore at home followed by three against the reds.
39:26.402 --> 39:29.544
[SPEAKER_01]: They have Horton going up against Trevor Rogers on Friday.
39:30.125 --> 39:41.793
[SPEAKER_01]: Matthew Boyd going up against Tomo Yuki Sugano on Saturday and in Colin Ray and going on Sunday against a pitcher to be determined by for the Orioles.
39:42.634 --> 39:44.217
[SPEAKER_01]: So those are your next three this weekend.
39:44.277 --> 39:49.667
[SPEAKER_01]: Then again, like I said, you'll have three against the reds coming up to the home stand and post deadline home stand.
39:51.831 --> 39:52.251
[SPEAKER_01]: Look, it's.
39:54.104 --> 39:59.968
[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a long two months here, last two months of the season here for the cubs.
40:00.028 --> 40:04.711
[SPEAKER_01]: And definitely for cubs fans as the brewers just continue to make things not easy for the cubs.
40:05.932 --> 40:15.298
[SPEAKER_01]: But in, you know, in the nl central, fan graph still gives them the best chance to win the division and make the playoffs, but like the eighth or ninth highest odds to win the world series overall.
40:16.749 --> 40:17.890
[SPEAKER_01]: Still in a good spot here.
40:18.371 --> 40:19.632
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just about winning games.
40:19.792 --> 40:23.436
[SPEAKER_01]: It's about winning seat, winning two out of three every time you can.
40:23.937 --> 40:27.140
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe sweep some series in there, you know, the Orioles sold some pieces off.
40:27.801 --> 40:28.842
[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe that helps.
40:29.062 --> 40:34.188
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe them getting worse helps the cubs have a better chance at two out of three or even a sweep this weekend.
40:34.989 --> 40:38.312
[SPEAKER_01]: Would be what would be big for like hubs that they can do that this weekend, but either way.
40:38.873 --> 40:42.594
[SPEAKER_01]: It's gotta find a way to win a series and just overall stack up wins.
40:43.414 --> 40:44.854
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you don't know what the brewers are gonna do.
40:44.894 --> 40:51.535
[SPEAKER_01]: The only thing you can control when it comes to the brewers is the five games you have coming up against them at regularly field.
40:52.175 --> 40:54.636
[SPEAKER_01]: Winner of that series wins the season series.
40:55.076 --> 40:56.796
[SPEAKER_01]: So a massive series then coming up.
40:56.836 --> 40:59.937
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember exactly when it is to be honest, but that's coming up.
40:59.977 --> 41:04.037
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe this month, five games, winner of that takes the season series.
41:04.818 --> 41:06.958
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's all it comes control when it comes to the brewers.
41:08.017 --> 41:10.519
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the only games that cubs face the brewers left.
41:10.620 --> 41:15.204
[SPEAKER_01]: That's all the only games they can control with against them.
41:15.344 --> 41:18.527
[SPEAKER_01]: What the cubs can control now is winning games against whoever's in front of them.
41:19.048 --> 41:20.229
[SPEAKER_01]: And right now that's the Orioles.
41:20.309 --> 41:27.436
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's going to be should be at least on paper, less of a test than it was even twenty four hours ago.
41:30.355 --> 41:35.401
[SPEAKER_01]: It still, it still comes down to the Cubs haven't necessarily been playing their best baseball.
41:35.421 --> 41:37.023
[SPEAKER_01]: They just lost the series in Milwaukee.
41:37.063 --> 41:42.410
[SPEAKER_01]: They lost, they were able to take two of them from the white socks, but that was a struggle a little bit there.
41:43.531 --> 41:45.533
[SPEAKER_01]: They lost the series at home to the Royals.
41:45.593 --> 41:49.178
[SPEAKER_01]: They lost the series on the road to Minnesota before the All Star Break.
41:49.658 --> 41:53.360
[SPEAKER_01]: a team that just sold off like ten pieces from the twenty six man roster.
41:53.420 --> 42:06.067
[SPEAKER_01]: So not necessarily been the Cubs best baseball as of late, but they got a chance here to start off the post deadline stretched the last home stretch of the season, not home, but like the home stretch, right?
42:06.828 --> 42:11.330
[SPEAKER_01]: The last stretch of the year going into the playoffs last two months.
42:12.471 --> 42:15.692
[SPEAKER_01]: They have a chance to start off on the right now here against the Orioles.
42:15.732 --> 42:18.374
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see what happens when the Cubs
42:19.499 --> 42:19.939
[SPEAKER_01]: restart.
42:19.959 --> 42:30.022
[SPEAKER_01]: I say restart with quotes restart their season or just, you know, going into August first, get started on those last two months of the season, the last third or so of the season.
42:30.582 --> 42:39.445
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see what happens and we'll see if the cubs can kind of keep the train rolling despite the lack of a big swing and have the trade deadline.
42:40.345 --> 42:41.465
[SPEAKER_01]: That all remains to be seen.
42:41.545 --> 42:46.227
[SPEAKER_01]: So until then, I'm Ryan Greer for the Addison the thirty fifth podcast.
42:46.247 --> 42:47.167
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for your support.
42:48.142 --> 42:49.202
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you guys later.
42:49.663 --> 42:50.423
[SPEAKER_01]: Have a good one.
