► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm a full-time entrepreneur, video editor, coach, and bestselling author. I never thought I'd say I was any of these things even just a year ago! I grew up wanting to be an on-camera Meteorologist so I'd say my interest in speaking through a public forum was always there.
My podcast is about everything and nothing in particular. I really enjoy interviewing guests from all walks of life and intend to bring value and knowledge to my listeners through other people's journeys.
My listeners are people seeking answers and looking to resonate with someone or a situation.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Podcasting is amazing because it's unfiltered story-telling. It truly provides an outlet for anyone with something to share. I think we can all learn a LOT from others' experiences.
My goal with this podcast is just to help people. Bring personal experiences to the forefront to help others with what they're experiencing.
I started podcasting in February 2020 with my husband on our show, Just the Two of Us with Kenny and Nell. It was right around the beginning of the pandemic, we had a snow day from work, and we got drunk and picked up the mics. Fast-forward to 2022 and I started What the Nell!? in March.
I'm extremely impatient when it comes to releasing any new content! I constantly fall off the wagon with planning content because I get too excited to release new stuff. So, it didn't take but maybe a few hours or a day to release the first episode of either podcast.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Finding time to do something you actually WANT to do is easy...simply because you make the time for things you want to do. It didn't take much from a financial standpoint to start either. I spent maybe $400 between mics, a mixer, and additional headphones. In the grand scheme of things, that's not a ton, however, you don't even need to spend that! You can easily podcast from your phone if you want to.
I release an episode every week, which is definitely a commitment, but if you do it right and automate some things, it doesn't take much time at all. Between pre-production, the interview, and post-production, I spend about 3-4 hours a week on an episode. And realize, that can be slimmed down if I wanted to automate even more!
Finding the time to do a podcast when you're working full-time is tricky, but if you really enjoy it, it shouldn't be that hard. Working on it after coming home from work or even putting the kids to bed is always an option.
Funding for podcasting can get really expensive really quickly. The trick is to find a hosting platform that fits your needs and provides the most value to your show and experience. I spend exactly $15 a month on a basic bCast plan because I do all of the editing and marketing myself. Editing is a service I offer through my company, enTICEing Media, so I save a ton of money doing it myself.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
There is so much to gain from podcasting! All of the knowledge out there is crazy! Of course, it can become a very profitable business as well. While I haven't had any sponsors yet, I'd love to take them on. I'm a big fan of promoting businesses and people I love.
Since I started with bCast, I've seen my listenership and downloads really grow...and that started just 3 days in! In roughly 3 days, I had 535 downloads, without even being on Apple Podcasts during the first of those 3 days. Before I was with another hosting platform where the statistics were all over the place and very unreliable.
But no matter who you're with, it's all worth it in the end. Podcasting creates inclusivity, friendships, provides career opportunities and so much more.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I try to streamline my process as much as possible within my budget. Currently, I'm using Zoom to record most podcasts if not in person. I use Audacity, which I have found to be really great and easy to edit in and bCast is my hosting platform now. If you focus on just one important piece of equipment, let it be your mic. I love my Samson Q2, but I wouldn't mind upgrading to a Blue Yeti sometime soon.
Finding guests to interview is easy...just ask! Reach out in Facebook groups like Podcast Nation. Ask your friends and family when you're just starting out. You will find more people are willing to talk than not.
Once I find a guest, I do some research on them and their topic. I usually come up with a few questions I know I want to ask. The great thing about podcasting is that you never know where the conversation will take you sometimes, so I'm never too rigid on questions. Once the episode is recorded, downloaded, and converted, I throw the file into Audacity and begin the editing process. From there, I upload it to bCast, fill out the description of the episode, add the artwork, and set up the publish date and time.
► How do you market your show?
Right now, I'm marketing my show through Facebook and Instagram. Specifically, my Facebook group, What the Nell!? Podcast and my Instagram page what_the_nell_podcast. Social Media is huge for any area of marketing! Most of my listeners find my show through Apple Podcasts and Spotify, which also happen to be the majority of the links I post.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Just start! There are no excuses, especially with all of the free resources available out there. Audacity is free to edit in. There are free hosting platforms. There's also no need to spend money on good equipment right away either. The most important thing is you just do it.
The most surprising thing I learned is the people I never thought would listen to my podcast, do. Someone is always watching what you're doing, especially when you put yourself out there. I see names of followers pop up all the time that surprise me! I think "What!? They listen to my show!?"
I'd say helpful resources are other podcasts in general. Just listen. Learn styles, flows, listen for editing techniques, pay attention to where ads are placed, etc.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
