► Tell us about you and your podcast
"Spilling the T" is a podcast dedicated to shedding light on the inner workings, challenges, and advancements within the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Hosted by Andrew Cassidy of the MBTA's Customer & Employee Experience Department, the podcast brings in voices from various stakeholders—ranging from MBTA officials to community advocates—to discuss the latest developments in the MBTA system. Each episode offers listeners a transparent view of what’s happening in Boston’s transit system, from ongoing projects to long-term plans, making it an essential listen for anyone interested in public transportation.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
The podcast was born out of a need for greater transparency and engagement with the MBTA’s diverse ridership and stakeholders. Recognizing that many important conversations were happening without ample visibility, we decided to create a platform that could bring these discussions to the forefront. The goal was to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in running a major transit system and to build trust with the community by openly discussing both our successes and challenges.

► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Time and funding are always challenges, especially in a large organization like the MBTA. However, we made the podcast a priority by integrating it into our overall communications strategy. With a limited budget, the podcast soon proved to be a cost-effective tool for reaching our audience. Additionally, the passion and dedication of the team involved in the podcast made it possible to find the time amidst our other responsibilities.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Podcasting has become a crucial tool for building trust and fostering hope in the future of the MBTA. Through "Spilling the T," we have a platform to directly address our riders' concerns, clarify misunderstandings, and share the progress we are making, even in the face of challenges. It allows us to be transparent about the work we’re doing and the hurdles we encounter, which helps to demystify the complexities of running a large transit system. By bringing our listeners into the conversation, we aim to rebuild confidence in the MBTA's commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient service.
The podcast also serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting the efforts and dedication of the people working behind the scenes to improve the system. We share stories of innovation, resilience, and success that may not always make the headlines but are essential to our ongoing journey towards a better transit future. Each episode is an opportunity to reinforce our promise to the community—that we are listening, we are learning, and we are working tirelessly to make the MBTA a system they can trust and be proud of. In this way, podcasting not only informs but also inspires, showing that the future of the MBTA is one of continuous improvement and unwavering commitment to our riders.

► How does your podcasting process look like?
Our podcasting process is a collaborative effort that involves multiple stages. It begins with selecting relevant and timely topics, often influenced by current events or ongoing projects within the MBTA. We then identify and reach out to potential guests to see who is best suited to address the topic. Recording sessions are typically conducted in our makeshift "studio." Post-production involves minimal editing, solely for clarity and flow, ensuring the final product is both informative and engaging. Finally, we distribute the episodes across various platforms, accompanied by promotional content to reach our audience.
► How do you market your show?
Marketing for "Spilling the T" involves a multi-channel approach. We leverage the MBTA’s existing communication channels, including social media, in-station screens, and our website to promote new episodes. Additionally, we rely on word-of-mouth and the growing community of transit enthusiasts who help spread the word about the podcast.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
For those new to podcasting, my advice would be to start with a clear purpose and a well-defined audience. Knowing why you’re creating the podcast and who you’re trying to reach will guide every decision you make, from content to marketing. Don’t be afraid to start small and learn as you go—consistency and authenticity are more important than having a perfect product right out of the gate. Also, engage with your audience as much as possible; their feedback will be invaluable as you refine your approach. Finally, be patient and persistent; building an audience takes time.
