► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hello, I'm Oscar. I've been living in Asia for around 17 years, the last 5 of which have been in Mainland China.
Mosaic of China is a light-hearted podcast about people from all walks of life who are currently making their mark in China.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I've been listening to podcasts for over a decade, I have always loved the intimacy of the audio form. As an interviewer and moderator by profession, I have loved meeting all kinds of people in China. So in 2019, the time was right to combine my skills and passions to create a podcast which would showcase these interesting people in China to the outside world. In some ways, people in China can have different perspectives to those outside. But in most ways, they're exactly the same.
This podcast sets out to illustrate these differences and commonalities, through the prism of the lives and stories of the individuals who live here.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
The podcast is a passion project, I don't derive any money from it. But I make sure to find the time an d resources to produce these episodes, because to me it's one of life's luxuries to meet and engage with fascinating people.
Regular episodes are released weekly, and special compilation episodes are released every two weeks.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
It keeps me out of mischief!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I find guests through my network, and make sure to curate a group of people who have the diversity to discuss China through many different lenses. I usually meet all my guests before recording an episode with them, so that we can build a rapport and build trust. I then bring them to a studio where we can relax and have a meaningful conversation together.
► How do you market your show?
Half of my listeners are based in China, where they can find the show on domestic apps like 喜马拉雅 (Ximalaya) and 小宇宙 (Xiaoyuzhou). The other half are based around the world, and they can find the show on all podcasting platforms, including Listen Notes.
I don't really market the show very aggressively, but I have created communities of listeners on Instagram, Facebook and WeChat, just search for @mosaicofchina on those platforms. These communities can interact with the visual elements that accompany the show.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Create a community around the content of the show. Spend time learning about sound editing. And most importantly, have fun!
