► Tell us about you and your podcast
We're award-winning authors and former magazine editors who have been creating content for women for —collectively — more than six decades. Kim was an editor of the '90s cult-hit teen magazine Sassy and the founding editor-in-chief of the popular Condé Nast magazine, Lucky. Jenn is the former deputy editor of Lucky, the former editor-in-chief of Zooey Deschanel's site, HelloGiggles, and the former chief content officer of producer Shonda Rhimes' site shondaland.com. We've authored numerous books on everything from finding your unique style to how to navigate work when you feel like a misfit. Our show is irreverent, honest, intimate, light-hearted and hopeful and focuses on the ways women's lives change after 40. Each week, we interview a prominent 40-something woman about her life and accomplishments.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We wanted to create a safe, useful, informative space for women over 40 that digs deep into the identity shift that comes with navigating this alternately weird and liberating stage of life. There's so little media geared toward women in mid-life and beyond and so we created the podcast for ourselves, too. Each week we tackle our fears, our health, our careers, self-care, and how to negotiate being called “middle-aged” when you feel anything but.
We started our podcast in January of 2020, we released the episode right away!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release new episodes each week! We're lucky to be two freelancers who can take the 3-4 hours a week for the podcast whenever we need to.
We fund the podcast ourselves — with whatever money we get from ads and from our Patreon.
Right now, we don't do much marketing, but we plan to expand.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
The podcast has deepened our friendship and helped us build a community of like-minded women experiencing the same issues and feelings.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We interview guests over Zoom.
► How do you market your show?
We currently use social media solely to market, but are looking to expand.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
We're new at this! We want/need suggestions!
