► Tell us about you and your podcast
Ruchi this side. I come from a sales and marketing background whereas, my co-host Kundan comes from an entrepreneurial background. Kundan is also deeply interested in human life and psychology. His outlook towards life is worth spreading because from our personal experience, it can help more people.
Our podcast is to help people become a better version of themselves. We talk about life, emotions, relationships, day-to-day situations, career and more!
Over 60% of our listeners are primarily people of age below 27 years.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
The reason for doing a podcast was pretty straightforward for us.
First, Kundan's voice has a charm and second our content is unique. Together, as a team we bring different expertise towards content creation. Both of us consume a lot of audio content and we believe that audio content has a very loyal listener base and it brings convenience to its listeners to listen to it while traveling or doing some mundane tasks.
The initial goal for doing the podcast was to help more people benefit from the principles and ideologies that Kundan comes up with. Having seen people around him benefitting, I got a close validation that his ideas are worth spreading, and hence came the idea of the Unbinary Life Podcast.
We strongly believe that youth are the future leaders of tomorrow and they also have this amazing curiosity to learn new things and be receptive to new ideas. That's why we want to focus on this age group.
Today too, as I write this, although a few, we have sufficient validations from our listeners that our content was able to help them in some way and that is what motivates us.
We released the trailer of our podcast on 30th Sep'21 and since then we have been releasing new episodes every Friday.
It took us a month to release our first episode, although, we have been brainstorming over our podcast three months prior to our release.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release 1 episode per week. Our release day is every Friday. We try to do 4-6 recordings per month and release one episode per week. At any given time we try to have at least 3 episodes as buffer.
We have allotted specific days from our working week to dedicate to the podcast. Now that the process is streamlined, we hardly spend 4-6 hours on podcast per week. This time includes content research time, podcast recording and ad-hoc meetings if any.
For now we are self-funding this. We have hired two interns who help us with video editing and social media.
We use social media platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn and now YouTube to promote our podcast.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
For now we have no sponsorships.
Podcast to us is not only to educate others but it is also a self-growth journey for both of us. In the process of doing this podcast, both of us have learnt so much more about ourselves, our potential and capabilities and it has helped us to tackle difficult situations more maturely.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
For hardware, we use a medium-range podcast mic for recording. For software, we use Auphonic to polish the edited audio file.
We found most of our guests either through LinkedIn or Instagram.
Our episode preparation can be broadly categorized into two methodologies:
1. For guest episodes: We study a bit about our guest and then invite them over for a candid call before the recording so that all of us get familiar with each other. After that, we schedule a recording with them. The primary outline of the podcast is shared with the guests in advance. The ides of guest episodes for us is to bring out their human side more to the podcast, hence our questions are around the same and we take the liberty to be spontaneous during recording.
2. For conversational episodes between Kundan and myself(Ruchi): We narrow down a few topics based on our research and then structure it with bullet points and a few questions that would help us to cover the entire topic well. We begin with the basics on any topic and then gradually move towards challenges, examples from real-life, applications and solutions or takeaways for listeners.
We interview our guests either via Zoom or via MS Teams.
► How do you market your show?
We have hosted our podcast using Anchor.fm
We are currently present on Apple, Breaker, Castbox, Google, Pocket Casts, RadioPublic, Spotify, and Anchor.
Apart from that we use social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn for marketing. Last week itself we launched our YouTube channel and that is yet to pick up.
Currently Spotify, web browser and Apple podcast are our leading podcast platforms.
We have found social media platforms to be the most useful channel for promotion as of now.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Advice to aspiring podcasters would be:
1. If you want to start your podcast, start it. Don't over burden yourself with what-if and what-if-not questions. The more you contemplate, the more you delay it. No amount of preparation is sufficient enough. So you have to start someday before its too late.
2. Listen Notes, Anchor.fm, Apple podcasts, etc. all have some great blogs to guide you to start a podcast. Personally, I found them all very useful.
