About this podcast
The Drunk and the Ugly is a role playing game (RPG) podcast with a focus on narrative gaming systems. These systems utilize a wide variety of rules and settings to create fantastic stories for both players and listeners. The cast relies on improvisation, weaving compelling narratives from disparate characters and viewpoints. From science fiction to fantasy, mystery to slice-of-life, the podcast covers all genres. While similar to a radio drama on the surface, the rules and randomization mechanics of the RPG systems affect the flow and decisions of the stories. There are no scripts and no filters. We invite you to join us twice weekly as we celebrate narrative, gaming, and storytelling. Also dogs.

She looked just like his dreams. Dark red hair, deep skin, a stance between confidant and cautious. She showed up all the time. Sometimes in dresses, sometimes in more practical noble wear. They were powerful, persuasive, and Izek knew it had to mean something. Even before seeing her it was a reflex, the shape of her face and vibrant colors in the darkness of his slumber. Eyes so sharp that he couldn’t shake them in his waking hours. For a few years now he had gotten that cowardly toy-maker to create for him, making sure he knew who was in charge. After the first bruises he started making them better. Correcting the face and the skin and the oh so piercing eyes. But here she was. He tensed his arm, bristling red under a veneer of plate. A building away. For how long. How long had she been real outside the confines of his thoughts, how long had she been close enough that he could see her and know that he wasn’t simply mad. Well… Time was here that that could change. Time they would meet. A long conquest.  Countless travels through the Warp.  The Inquisitors.  The unreliable navigators.  All of them have led to this. The Brilliant Resolve sits in high orbit over Thorin’s Rest, its hulls, weapons and void shields now in top working order.  Faydra Ramirez and her crew look down on the long-since visited planet, fully geared up and ready to make their way down to deal with the collective threat. For better or worse, this is where her story will end. Nestled betwixt dark mountain and grey forest, the Wizard of Wines vineyard was illuminated with gentle lamp light, a moment of true victory was had. Though morals were debated, none could deny the victory held this day become night in the gentle confines of the winery. With weariness setting in and progress having been made, the coalition of slayers drifted to their nightly rest. To the south, past a spewing maelstrom of flame and ash, lies a building. Stone in structure, ancient, and still. A temple carved from the dark mountains of Stensia itself, but stiller than blessed Graf. Usually. For in it’s frigid interior rooms of unlit argent metal there was a shake. For but a seemingly endless moment, something in those blackened chambers stirred once more. After years in development and editing, we at the Drunk and the Ugly finally debuted the playtest draft of our new game Gobblin’: The Goblin RPG at Gen Con 2017. In the world of magic and dragons, knights and treasure, elves and trolls, there lived a race called goblins. Goblins were intelligent enough to cause trouble, but stupid enough to lack any foresight or responsibility for their actions. They were curious and greedy enough to want everything they saw, but too lazy to work for it and too cowardly to take it. Their wasteful lifestyle ruined the environment all around them, breeding like cockroaches until they were forced to expand further. The wisest of races gathered and agreed they were a major nuisance on their world’s economy, environment, and all life around them. The goblins had to be dealt with severely. Rather than waste the manpower and resources in an all-out war, the highest magi and sages created a spell that banished them from their world, hurling every living goblin from their reality. The entirety of the goblin race landed in another time in an alternate dimension, one stripped of almost all sentient life. There were no humans in this world, only the remains of their work. The world had been ravaged by war, with the goblins stranded among the rubble of mankind. Realizing what had happened (several minutes after they arrived and their brains caught up to speed), the goblins all cheered out as one. They believed this was their reward for living their happy lives well enough that some god or wizard or giant in a funny hat had granted them an entire world full of free food and interesting things that exploded when you poked them right. There was no one to lord over them or slay them just for the experience of it all. After centuries of hanging at the bottom of the food chain (just above blue slimes and kobolds), a nuclear holocaust turned out to be the best thing that had ever happened for them. Note: This is a con game and is next to some very rowdy boys so the noise levels are a bit high early on.  This clears off as the recording continues. This is a crosspost from our sister show Ugly Talk!  Go subscribe if you haven’t already. This is a panel from Gen Con 2017. Travis talks about Ludonarrative Dissonance (Fludonarrative discobiscuits if you’re hungry). If you’ve been in the video game blog-o-sphere at some point, you have heard of LND (I’m not typing out the entire word you can’t make me). But is it necessarily the pejorative term as its become in video game circles. Listen to this panel from Gen Con that gives the answer: NO. Most of all if anything LND is a feature most Tabletop GMs and Players are intimately familiar with, but haven’t realized there was a term for. As such, listen in, learn a thing (maybe), and speak up if you have questions. Welcome to Herding Cats: Ludonarrative Dissonance and Players. (Dammit you tricked me into writing the full things again…) Do you want to take part in a playtest of Gobblin’: The Goblin RPG? You can watch a video of our live play at Gen Con 2017 here! At the end of Gen Con 2016, we were contacted by Mage Company Games asking if we would review one of their games.  We said yes and took them up on their offer to receive a free copy of Carrotia in exchange for doing a review.  In June of 2017 we finally received the game, and during Gen Con 2017 Matt, James, Travis, Kevin, and friend of the show Clayton played it during off-time at the convention.  You can listen to our first impressions and our actual live attempts to understand the rules and finally play the game. Our collective takes in summary: We found the game incredibly chaotic and incredibly complicated for what it’s trying to achieve. The need for multiple timers as well as limited turns and access to pieces in order to build the requisite mazes was hectic and unintuitive. The deterministic nature of moving through the pathways towards the exit once the maze was constucted was fairly dull. The random birds placed on the board and their effects led to some level of strategizing, but ultimately the birds didn’t pose much threat as they continually just ran into walls. The rabbit abilities are wildly varied and unbalanced. Neither the main rules nor the errata rules we were sent had any hard or firm victory condition. We were impressed by the level of production value that went into the game and the amount of custom pieces that came with it. We love the art style the game goes for.  We may have picked this game more or less because of the box art. The tiles and player cards are sturdy and well-constructed. Every bird has a custom die that makes it easy to see which one is moving where. 3 hourglasses of differing lengths was intriguing even if ultimately it was pointless. Despite the high production values and lovely art, we would not recommend this game.  It’s rated for ages 8 and up and we as a group of twentysomething adults were confused and frustrated by its rules, and ultimately we didn’t feel like we had any control over what happened. Things may be very wrong in the world, but at least we still have Gen Con.  This year we demoed a few games, attended many panels and hosted a few, and played and ran many, many games.  Join us as we begin our 12am recounting of events and James smashes down some fried rice into a greasy pile.   During this wrap-up we talk briefly about our new game Gobblin’, a game about being goblins in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.  If you’re interested in playtesting this game, please shoot an email to thedrunkandtheugly@gmail.com Side Chatter The post Gen Con 2017 Wrap Up – Walkin the Wok appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.

Again. They take, and take, and take. The so called cultured and all they hold dear. Her hands quivered as she held her wounds, willing them with what little conviction she maintained to close. They feared the mountain so they forgot it to lull themselves to sleep. Her breathing was quick and stained with tears. And still the chance for vengeance was denied them. She wanted to escape, flee the world a hawk upon the wind. But he was there. Calm as ever. The stony face of the cliffs. And as he lit a flame with the will of the world, she knew she would be fine. To depart for now, but in his affirmation… Maybe they could change something. The forest closed in, never betraying the hunters just out of sight. The Brilliant Resolve has beaten their bitter rivals to the surface of the planet Reign, and after some ordeals with a forcefield and waves upon waves of minions willing to die for that forcefield, have finally entered the planet’s facilities.  Much to their dismay, Faydra Ramirez and her crew had to part with their weapons and be calm and orderly as the owner, Dalbec, led them through the facility.  As the tour dragged on and the crew found themselves deeper inside, Faydra received a communication that their guide may not actually be who he claims. Anathema. All of them. Their homes. Their villages. Their carts. Their wine. Brazen and foolhardy they drink to forget the untamed world around them. Plagued by the dark. But they forget where they are. Built on stone. People of untamed wood and broken bone. The sky tumbles, the trees rustle, and the mountain moans his sorrowful regret. And with eyes of thunder and the world at hand, those fearful walls would shake with conviction. Her house was neat. Impossibly so, especially considering the stagnant state of town and the cavalcade of needy that shuffled through her arched doors. It was midday as her sons, foolish boys that looked more like a memory everyday, were out inflicting their presence out on the town, even as daily the town inflicted it’s way back through fools and the fearful. Her house was neat. A by product of immaculate attention and wealth that the town had mostly forgotten outside the Baroness. The town always felt like it expected to be older money than it was, and she was happy to be one source of whispers. Both in, and out. And today the whispers grew louder. Her house was neat. Because she needed it to stay that way. Follow the rules. Do not stand out despite name and deed seeming so loud before that fool of an inquisitor and her bold strokes that left cloven into her two narrow categories of the world with a fervent bloodlust. It’s a shame that the lady inquisitor made such a mess. Her house was neat; before he came to visit. He knew subtlety when he wished, though a vampire’s subtlety is not the same. He spoke in honeyed words, the same as the first time he spoke to her as such a young girl with no view of the world but sadness. And suddenly Lady Wachter remembers, all those years before when she first knew the beauty and the idyllic danger of her lord… And how their house had been… So messy. It had been years before the signs of blood left the bedroom. But those years were buried under more. Now his confidant voice leaves again, leaving her alone in the midday dark of a briefly empty home, a powerful woman of rumor exhaling to herself. She whispers something to the obscure space of the passing day. And though I apologize, I do not know it’s contents dear listener, because for once on Innistrad, no one heard it. For when they’d come, the house would be neat. It is with caution dear listener that I must remind you of the shadows that fill every waking moment and breath in the Outland Valleys. My contrition for sharing this knowledge is deep, for every moment of these brave and foolish adventurers lives must be riddled with at least one salient thought: Who, or what, is watching them? There is no moment of respite for those who fate takes a shine to. And in Pallas behind ruffled papers and chilly tones, a short scruffy man in an ill fitting suit over his ill fitting skin is the first observer. It’s quiet words he shares with those higher, but those words become like gold as it travels up the chain, and reaching up to the top as unto blood. But the pale haired woman at the end of the valuable words smiles a decadent smile that conveys a surplus of self confidence drowned in opulence, but bearing the features of someone all too familiar. “They certainly never stop being entertaining. I can’t wait to see her.” she says to no one despite the sycophant at her heel. She stands, a cascade of shimmering red fabric and too artful motions. “We’ll see what they can do.” And then she was gone. If you mess with the Prime Factorum, you’ll have to pay the consequences.  In this case, literally. The crew of the Brilliant Resolve has found their accounts frozen. Without any means of paying for her extravagant lifestyle, Faydra Ramirez must now make amends to the Factorum through apology and reminding rebels that they are not allowed to secede from the Imperium.  Once again,  Faydra’s career as a rogue trader remains at stake.  Time to get to work. Josh – Scylla. Thirty-ish Void Master of the Brilliant Resolve. Tall and well-muscled, she hales from a deathworld, where she fully excepted to live a short, brutal and, perhaps, glorious life. Hello internet!  This is a crosspost from our sister show Ugly Talk!  If you like this episode, be sure to check out the site and listen to the rest, or subscribe via your podcatcher of choice. Twin Peaks was a TV series by David Lynch and Mark Frost about the murder of the Homecoming Queen Laura Palmer in the sleepy town of Twin Peaks, Washington.  We share the experiences and explore the town through Dale Cooper, a federal agent called in to investigate the murder. The M.I.C.E. quotient is a writing foundation credited to Orson Scott Card, known most notably for his science fiction series Ender’s Game.  The basic idea as listed in the acronym is that every story seed falls into the categories of milieu, idea, character, or event.  You will have many of these story ideas overlapping and building upon one another in the course of your story, but the important thing is that you resolve them in the reverse of the order you introduce them. The structure of the early episodes and the subsequent failure of Twin Peaks can be heavily traced to MICE (among other things), and in this episode, we will discuss MICE through Twin Peaks, and how you can apply it to your own writing. Media Discussed in this Episode: The MICE Quotient Better Angels Monsters and Other Childish Things A Very Thorough Murder (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3)

The hunters, the farmers, the smiths and the sellers…  Were they proud? The city of Pallas, greyed over from sky and age, lives under the low hanging light of the harvest moon, a forest of a town where the hawthorn trees poke from the roofs. But here they were between everything: The wilds and civilization, riches and desolation, the church and those outside.  And to many those disparate images had little left. Though that band of road hardened travelers, mystics, warriors, fools had roamed into town, they paid it little mind. What was one more party of strangers in a city under thumb of fiend and zealot. Yet still beneath the branches and painted signs, the sounds of the ravens still caw… Side Chatter MUSIC CREDITS: Dark Walk Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ PLAYERS James – Conrad Starkherz – Paladin: An inquisitor of the Avacynian church, dedicated to the destruction of evil by all available means.
