The Drunk and The Ugly
By Matt Campen
About this podcast
The Drunk and the Ugly is a role playing game (RPG) podcast with a focus on narrative gaming systems. These systems utilize a wide variety of rules and settings to create fantastic stories for both players and listeners. The cast relies on improvisation, weaving compelling narratives from disparate characters and viewpoints. From science fiction to fantasy, mystery to slice-of-life, the podcast covers all genres. While similar to a radio drama on the surface, the rules and randomization mechanics of the RPG systems affect the flow and decisions of the stories. There are no scripts and no filters. We invite you to join us twice weekly as we celebrate narrative, gaming, and storytelling. Also dogs.

Care of members of the Homo Sapiens Gigantus subgenus must be undertaken with some delicacy. Normally, this robust cousin of mainline humanity does not require much medical care as such – their hardy physiology renders light injuries or minor pre-existing conditions inconsequential. That being said, when major injuries are suffered, the inability of most Ogryn to properly grasp the complexities of anatomy means that several extra precautions must be taken. Triple dosages of most drugs are required, and the daunting task of securing the patient may be necessary if, for example, the patient seeks to “help” you in removing bullets from his chest cavity with his bare fingers. Be commanding – while fierce in battle, the Ogryn is a docile creature when given an authority to obey. -Excerpt from Mending Body and Spirit, Together, a standard-issued Dominate Medicae text. The fallout from the unorthodox handling of Operation Puzzle Box begins moments after the squad leaves their commandeered vehicles. Prisoners must be remanded to the appropriate authorities. Differences between different branches of command need to be sorted out. And a ten-foot pile of muscle and tears must be assured that he is not, in fact, dead. Side Chatter PLAYERS Alex – Cornelius. Operator for the Severan Dominate. Content to spend his life navigating an armored coffin behind enemy lines; nonchalantly melting the Enemies of the Emperor while yelling at his latest comrade for perceived incompetence. James – Vorgen Nowak. A Heavy Gunner for the Severan Dominate. Always tries to be a reliable foundation for the team, either with his calm, collected style or his suite of heavy weaponry. Josh – Aloysius Vance.  A quiet psyker from an aggri-world, saved from the Black Ships of the Empire by the timely revolt. He largely keeps to himself, fully aware that the rank and file are disturbed by his presence. Kevin – Otho Valerius. Untested squad leader for the Severan Dominate. Still has a lot to learn about the ways of the Imperial Guard, but is determined to lead from the front with dignity and honor. Max – Fortunus “Fort” Diggles.  Ogryn soldier for the Severan Dominate. Large among even his inhuman kind, Fort is mountain of a man that more closely resembles the mountain. He is always happy to fight alongside his fellow soldiers and support them in their ambitions. The complexities of war often escape him, but he serves with his own blend of loyalty, commitment, and inhuman strength. Death is not a mystery. Not exactly. The people of Innistrad welcomed its inevitability, the idea of a freedom and reprieve. But yet they feared that fall, that curtain keeping them apart as the rest drew close. And who can blame them dear listener? It is not I who would proclaim to have no fear of what lies in my eternal slumber, be it dream or nightmare. But that realm must be peaceful, lest the geists not try so hard to grasp onto it, and those even whose bodies are raised by ghoul callers don’t even see need to always return. The demons and angels play with the hearts and souls of the people. But we know better. We know how to be kind. We know how to be vicious How to work for a life. How to earn our death. That’s why mortality and morality falls to us. I can only hope we are fit for it. And dear listener, I can only hope you and our adventurers deserve it. What a dull post. A good bit of skullduggery at the start, but we’ve spent the last week ferrying supplies to some spoked-out cogboy that knows he’s got us by the painful bits. As ever, may Throne deliver us from the attentions of our “betters.” -Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Gavin Thrace The Magos’ base is mostly still, save for the constant plodding of supply servitors, and the racing mind of the base’s owner. The squad and their comrades begin to loot the place in earnest, and scout out the surroundings. Unfortunately, peace is a fragile thing anywhere in the forty-first millenium, and things heat up when uninvited guests are slated to arrive. The mission’s goals are within sight, but are threatened from within. PLAYERS Alex – Cornelius. Operator for the Severan Dominate. Excerpt from the Writings of Cathar Dragomir: “This is it. This is the end. Death was… Welcome. It felt wrong to view it as so. But that sleep we are promised, a peace unknown to the living was never so beloved until I had it. And now… The Hold is in ruins. The people gone or fallen. My glorious angel, slain sometime in my negligent rest. No life could I sacrifice to right the wrongs that have happened. So I shall give it my death. The Lord was the first of us. Furious. A rancor unlike that I had ever seen. Seething in silence, a menace that I could not put to words. When I woke with a start I knew where I must go, clawing and scrabbling from my dirt and wooden bed. It was undignified. We were undignified. But we were here. My brothers, ready to serve again. We were filled with that anger, brought back by loyalty and love. But loathe am I to say it, I am not certain that this anger is righteous. It seems fighting back the war of time is almost as hard as the vampire. We lose more every day. And I too feel my memories and hopes fade, and my weariness emerge. That anger has become something else. Seeping, sinister. I have faith in my lord. I hope he can end the madness of that Fiend Maurer. But selfishly I hope it is soon. For I am so very tired. And as it stands, this stalemate… This is the end of hope.” Side Chatter MUSIC CREDITS: Dark Walk Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ PLAYERS James – Conrad Starkherz – Paladin: An inquisitor of the Avacynian church, dedicated to the destruction of evil by all available means. What a fascinating planet. All rules regarding conventional geology, ignored. And yet neither side could possibly be aware of these anomalies, to say nothing of the embarassing fumbling of greenskin “meks.” Cogitator core five assigned to analysis of Inquisitorial pict-capture. That wiring is familiar… -Magos Klax, Lathe-Lord of the Third Circle and Bearer of the Skull of Hax. Unraveling the mysteries of the crash site become of the utmost importance to all of the factions involved in the war for Hervara. The recent turning of a mole among the Imperial Guard forces could be a breakthrough for the embattled Dominate forces, and the Aetherian Rex auxilliary squad have been hand-picked to test the efficacy of the turncoat and his information. A high-ranking Imperial Magos is their target, and denying him and his vast stores of knowledge to the enemy is their main objective. PLAYERS Alex – Cornelius. Operator for the Severan Dominate. Rest was a luxury. It wasn’t something you idly did, a section of day carved out to doing very little. In the towns the workers drank themselves to nothing to forget the rest of their worries. On the road it was a time of paranoia and focus, a fitful attempt to regain one’s strength. But in Heron’s Light Hold it was a different matter. Rest was omnipresent, but just out of reach. The careful watchers in their ragged armor and gaunt faces stayed resolute, but stoic. Surrounded by decay, languishing in valor. Rest would not be there. And they were so very tired. It’s a Friday night for Anthony Redhorn, Doug Price, and Alpha Torres.  In their circle, that means it’s time to pop up some fresh hot corn and pop an awful film into the DVD player.  Tonight’s movie is something Anthony special ordered from the web a few weeks back: Nightlight Harbor, A low budget kids show from the early eighties involving pirates.  Playing the disc, there appear to be numerous issues with the playback quality, but surely that comes with the territory of bootleg discs. Adapted from one of the later sessions of our Road Trip campaign, this scenario has been changed into a standalone for con games, and was tested at this Gen Con on some genre savvy players. You try making something even approaching tasty with this Emperor-forsaken mold. I don’t care that there’s a planet full of it – nothing kills morale quite like a bowl full of green, flavorless paste at the end of the day. There’s got to be a better way… -“Chef” Aldo Gaston, Dominate Ration Distribution Adept, Camp Kleins. A much-needed night’s rest finally comes for the Aetherian Rex Auxilliary Corps. Or at least as close to one as they’re likely to find in the war-torn village-turned-depot of Kleins. After an early rising, the squad needs to resupply, tinker with their gear, and try to trade away the rest of their ill-gotten “weaponry.” United in purpose under the Dominate – as they surely are – one would expect cordial relations with the local chapter of the Priesthood of Mars. But offended machine spirits – and more importantly, offended tech-priests – are fickle creatures. PLAYERS Alex – Cornelius. Operator for the Severan Dominate. It was tiring waiting that long. Strephan Maurer ponderously set his chin in his hands on another tired day. Progress was stilted. The land remained clutched in his elegant grasp, the fools in the towns wary but feeling their trivial safety. A hiss of dismissal poured from his pursed lips. And yet they stood in his way. His fingers tapped against his pale skin, feeling the beat through his jaw and gleaming teeth. Tatyana was still there. And there was no easy way to collect her with elegance. The town needed to remain, shepherds need their sheep. And that crazed Inquisitor wouldn’t simply relinquish the town. And even more still were that would be group of hunters, stomping through the forest like a frightened boar. Their lack of subtlety was adorable, but could prove troublesome. So perhaps… Yes. Standing to his full height, he held out a hand as parchment and quill traveled loyally to his grip caught in invisible eddies. Across the room Rahadin, clad in black fur with his deep skin eyed his lord carefully, but didn’t speak. The rapid scratching of the feather on paper wasn’t something he’d disturb. Minutes later as the flurry of strokes ended and the wax seal was set to envelope, he finally felt the space to clear his throat subtly from the edge of the candlelit room. Maurer held the envelope out, looking his loyal servant in the eye. “Deliver this to Inghild.” he said in meticulous deep words. His face was placid for but a moment more, his mouth splitting into a sharp humorless grin. “It’s time we followed through on our plans.” Side Chatter MUSIC CREDITS: Dark Walk Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ PLAYERS James – Conrad Starkherz – Paladin: An inquisitor of the Avacynian church, dedicated to the destruction of evil by all available means.
