► Tell us about you and your podcast
The Marine Corps Movie Minute Podcast reviews movies featuring United States Marines. Each episode covers one minute of the movie. Hosted by Jack Perry and Bryon Lockhart, two non-active duty Marines. Our listeners come from all walks of life. Some listen because of the military / Marine Corps aspect, others come for the movie review aspect.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I have been an avid listener of podcasts, especially from the Movies By Minutes genre (MxM). I drew inspiration to start my own version after the hosts of the Jay and Silent Bob Minute Podcast stated if there isn't a MxM Podcast of a movie you like, then do it yourself. First and foremost we started this podcast as an excuse to "hang out" but also wanted to do something we both love, the USMC and movies. As the podcast progressed our goal was to bring awareness to Marine Corps movies that may not be as well known. We started pre-production in late 2019 and started releasing episodes in January 2020.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We are a self-funded independent podcast. During the course of the movie review we release 3 times a week (M,W,F). We do our best to scheduled recording times around our schedules. We typically have a very quick turnaround between recording, editing and releasing of the episode.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We are still an independent podcast that is self funded. Podcasting has been a great benefit to us personally as we get to spend time together and talk about stuff we enjoy. Doing a movie based on history and the military has given us plenty of opportunities to learn something new. Fortunately for us there is an existing MxM community who has been super helpful with advice, guest spots and friendship.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We typically use discord for recording and interacting with our guests but sometimes we use Skype. For editing purposes we use Audacity. Our guests are from all over but a good number of them are from within the MxM community.
► How do you market your show?
We use word of mouth and social media to promote the show. Our guests also promote their appearance with is always helpful to pull in new listeners.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Preparation is key. Depending on your format I would recommend banking some episodes before you start releasing them so you have enough of a buffer in case life gets in the way of podcasting. I would also recommend finding people who have podcasted before who can offer advice. YouTube is loaded with many helpful videos as we.
